• Cannot install build essential from the CD?

  After a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 I tried to install build-essential from the Ubuntu installation CD. I put the cd in the cdrom and in the software repositories i checked the box install from cd(Ubuntu 10.10 release Maverick Meerkat). Then I reloaded the software repositories. The synaptic manager then tried to download some repository related files but failed to do so as i didn't have internet connection. Then I open a terminal and wrote sudo apt-get install build-essential. It prompted me if I want to install build essential y/N. I typed y but the terminal showed some errors and was not installed. I also tried to add the CD in the software repositories. I clicked add and it prompted me to insert a CD while the CD was still inside the cdrom. I clicked "ok" then and it showed it could not find any cd. What is wrong?

• Need suggestions on how to create a website with an encrypted database.

  Hi guys, I want to create a website where a user enters content (say a couple of sentences) which eventually gets stored in a backend database (maybe MySQL). But before the content leaves the client side, I want it to get encrypted using something on client like maybe javascript. The data will travel over the web encrypted, but more importantly, will also be permanently stored in the backend database encrypted. Is JavaScript appropriate to use for this? Would 256 bit encryption take too long? Also, how do you query an encrypted database later on if you want to pull down the content that a user may have submitted over the past 2 months? I'm looking for tips, suggestions and any pointers you guys may have in how to go about learning about and accomplishing this. Thanks!

• Apache2 and FTP

  I just set up an Apache web server on my Raspberry Pi, along with MySQL and PHP5, and to upload files i set up vsftpd. The thing is that the ftp connection sent me to my pi user home directory, instead of /var/www . So i changed Pi home directory to /var/www and changed it again to it's previous home. FTP now sends me to /var/www but whenever I upload files other rights are null. (Apache sends a 403 Forbidden every time unless I manually chmod the files inside /var/www uploaded via ftp) Does anyuone know how to fix this? Thanks!

• Having tried differen ways but none worked - How do I disable a service from auto-start at boot in Ubuntu?

  This really doesn't make sense. I've been using many other distros and never had such difficulty managing autostart services. I found three ways of disabling autostart services, and none of them works for me: update-rc.d -f service_name remove chkconfig --level 12345 service_name off sysv-rc-conf I tried all the three ways to disable mysql daemon, mongo daemon, redis server, cups daemon, yet all of the utilities confirmed that the daemons are disabled, yet they still automatically start on boot. Please suggest the most correct way to disable services from auto-start at boot. Thank you! btw, it's running 12.04

• Lenovo IdeadPad S10-3c problems

  please help me fix these problems because i really like ubuntu 12.04 and i have replaced my windows 7 ultimate for this everytime i turn on my ideapad it hangs, but when i insert my usb device that i used for the installation and restart my ideapad, it works. How can i open my lenovo without my usb device? my keboard doesn't work. i pressed each key and none of it work. those are the first two problems, i haven't tried the microphone, speaker and webcam yet because I really hate that i can't even type a single letter. please do fix this problem.

• Programatically loading user controls

  Today's little problem is that I am trying to load user controls from my codebehind like so: Dim myControl As UserControl = Page.LoadControl("~\Modules\Content.ascx")              Controls.Add(myControl)  On running the page myControl is no where to be seen. I wonder why that is? Well after a bit of thought the following come to mind... Am I using the correct code to insert the usercontrol? Is there an alternative available? Does the fact that the usercontrol has a page_load method make a difference? Does the fact that the usercontrol is being called from the page_init method make a difference? Do I need to register the control in my aspx page at design time? I'll be looking to answer these questions as the day goes on!

• What can I use to set up a 100% cloud based python IDE + Hosting environment?

  I'm working a side project and I can't always be on "my" machine to code/deploy the web application. I am aware of various cloud IDEs (e.g., Cloud 9 IDE) and independent Django/Flask etc., hosting services (e.g., Heroku). What is the best way to completely shift my development/deployment environment to the cloud so that I can code/deploy from anywhere? I don't mind using paid services but I'm not sure which cloud IDEs play nice with which hosting services. Has anyone tried this setup before? What has or hasn't worked? I want to minimize the manual intervention in 'connecting the two services' as much as possible. I'm going to be using Django, MySQL and Redis for the web-app

• Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • Dealing with technical debt

  This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far, and I've noticed a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than take something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refacoring or extending the app. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale and in their attitude towards others. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving and the company becomes a revolving door with developers coming and and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

• Weird keywords in google webmaster tools

  I just happened to check the keywords list on Google Webmaster Tools for my site, which is an educational content site about finance. To my big surprise, after the first keyword, which is 'finance', I found amongst the 20 highest ranked (!) entries words like: mysql, server, adobe, flash, player, homez. What (i'm tempted to add "the heck") does that mean ? Is that something I should worry about? If so, how did these get there and how can I eliminate these / avoid they get into that list ? • Can't install Ubuntu in a HP DV6 Laptop

  I just bought an HP DV6 6011tx (link) Laptop... I formated the disk through Windows and prepared for installing Ubuntu... When I insert the live CD, it shows the ubuntu start screen and then everything goes black (no cursor... Just like the screen is switched off (but the system is working)) When i try to install from the USB, it says Live media is not found! Some times it also give a black screen like the CD... Have any idea how to fix this? Thanks

It looks like it offers what I'm looking for (easy to use quick form generator based on PHP and MySQL that's self-hosted with no other fees), but the site smacks of "scam." It's being pitched as a way to generate surveys to increase your business, make lots more money, etc. Is this thing worth the $97 or is there an open source alternative that might be... safer?

• How to use PostgreSQL on AWS - Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm extremely new to cloud-computing, Linux, and PostgreSQL, so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I've managed to create an m1.large instance running Ubuntu 11.10, connect via Putty SSH, and install PostgreSQL (sudo apt-get install postgresql), but that is as far as I've gotten. My goal is to run several python web-scraping scripts that I've written on this instance (so as not to eat up all of our bandwidth (smaller company at the moment)) and insert the scraped data into a PostgreSQL table on the instance and later retrieve that data to store on our local server (as I've heard AWS EBS is unreliable and I don't want to take chances). How can I configure PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? How can I access the data from my machine? I currently use PgAdmin3 to manage PosgreSQL on our local server. Can I use this same interface to manage PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? Any suggestions, solutions, links, etc is greatly appreciated. And again, if this is a dumb question, I apologize.

• Delete U3 System from SanDisk Cruzer USB Drive [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I get rid of “U3 System” on my USB drive? SanDisk Cruzer come with a "U3" malware built into them. Its intended for windows, but on Ubuntu it shows up as a "U3 System" CD on the desktop and as /dev/scd1 -> sr1 My question - How do I permanently delete this from the device without windows? I'm aware of the windows program, but I don't have access to any, and in any event, I wouldn't want to insert the stick into a windows box because it automatically installs its malware to any windows box comes into contact with! A friend of mine realized you could delete the cdrom via sudo echo "1" > /sys/class/block/srXXX/device/delete But it will come back if you reboot.

  To end the year on a good note this release adds support for SQL Server 2011 (Denali) CTP1 and fixes a few bugs. Because of the new SSMS shell in SQL 2011 CTP1 the SSMS Tools Pack 1.9.4 doesn't have regions and debug sections functionality for now. The fixed bugs are: A bug that prevented to create insert statements for a database A bug that didn't script commas as decimal points correctly for non US settings. A bug with searching through grid results. A threading bug that sometimes happened when saving Window Content History. A bug with Window Connection Coloring throwing an error on startup if a server colors was undefined. A bug with changing shortcuts in SSMS for various features. However, is there a way to use juju with lxc in a non-local environment? I am looking at a scenario where lxc containers are deployed on multiple nodes. I.e., lets say I have virtual machines m1 and m2 with wordpress deployed on a container in m1 and mysql deployed on a container in m2. Is there a way to orchestrate these deployments with juju?

• ETL Software Research Question

  Where I work, we use an in-house ETL solution that's homegrown and has been around for 5-10 years. I'm still new to my data analysis job, but I was wondering about the ETL tools that are out there. This is a new area for me. My situation, and job, is basically digging in a set of databases (DB2, SQL2005, Citrix, Ancient Cobol Database with a SQL Wrapper on top, MySQL, etc). Gather the desired information. combine the different datasets into one set. output into a file of choice (CSV, Tab Separated, Pipe Separated, XLS, etc). FTP to customer. I guess what my real question is, given my job, what are some good ETL suites that I can look at and compare to my in-house tools? This is more to research some other options. Ultimately, I'd either suggest a new solution or get options/ideas to improve our current app.

• Am I getting paid a reasonable wage for web engineering?

  I've been doing some research and it looks like most people in my line of work - WEB ENGINEERING/WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - that get paid hourly, make anywhere from $30-80 an hour for their work. With that said, I have SEVEN years of experience with web development including OOP-PHP, MySQL, jQuery, OOP-JS, interface design, ajax, database architecture, etc. I am also very strong with visual design and workflow - thus, I've made some really high quality interactive interfaces. I also have a lot of experience with Zend Framework, Symfony, Wordpress, Drupal, etc and a really strong portfolio to show for it. Here's the catch: I'm 20 years old, haven't graduated from college yet (I'm doing part time school and ~30 hours a week of web development.) But I've literally been doing web apps since I was 13 years old. So my question is: is $14 an hour a reasonable starting wage for working at a company part time?
