  Here we are in 2010, software engineers with 4 or 5 years or experience, still designing tables with 96 fracking columns. I told him it's gonna be a nightmare.   I am considering learning android development. I have some basic knowledge in C++. I downloaded the ADT plugin and eclipse. Now while starting from http://developers.android.com I see the codes were in XML. So I googled for learning XML. The best site I found was http://www.w3schools.org but there I found that for learning XML I have to learn HTML and CSS. So I learned the basics of HTML and CSS. But, Now I find in that learning java is a must. So can someone give idea about the sequental languages that I should study now? Should I learn php,mysql too. • Black screen white cursor and can't boot from live disc that I installed from just yesterday (Ubuntu 12.04)

  So, I've decided to change to Ubuntu from Windows 7 after reformatting. Install goes smoothly, I've set everything up, and it works for a day. It crashed when I had a full screen video, froze, so I rebooted, and now I can't get past the black screen with flashing white underscore cursor. If I wait a while, I get "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press any key" I've tried that, removed any boot options but the DVD drive, even tried my Windows 7 boot CD as well. Nothing boots, so I can't do anything. This is on an Asus A52N laptop, and all I can access now is the BIOS (version K52N 217), as far as I can tell.

• Writing a dynamic achievement system without hardcoding rules into the application

  I really enjoyed the solution provided here for groundwork on writing an achievement framework. The problem I have is I have game designers that would like to be able to insert achievements into a CMS at runtime. In a way, it sounds insane and complex to do this, but is it really? I think the concept of having to do a hard push of the application for every new achievement is cumbersome. I would love to be able to give our designers the capability to put together new achievements by entering them into a database. It shouldn't matter what tool I'm using, but for those interested, my backend is being written in JRuby (Ruby on top of the JVM). What are some possible ways of going about abstracting the logic in the aforementioned link even further so that rules can be interpreted at runtime?

• Proxy authentication box not showing (sometimes)

  I'm behind a proxy that require authentication by means of user/pass. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, I think the proxy is "Squid". Usually everything works fine, that means that the browser shows me the window to insert proxy user/pass and I can navigate. The problem: Sometimes the browser refuse to show the authentication windows and if I wait enough it gives me an error like: Errore 130 (net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED) Even if I restart, disconnect, the situation doesn't change. BUT on Windows the network (and the proxy) works.. So, bottomline what I know is: the network is working (though only on Windows) the Ubuntu configuration is ok (because i can navigate most days) The problems resolves itself in a few hours but I don't understand why. • Creating an install drive - can not open output file autorun.inf

  I am trying to make an install/boot drive for a computer that has no operating system and no optical drive. I used the ISO from Ubuntu.com and the burner from pendrivelinux.com. When the program starts writing to the flash drive, there is an error displayed that says : "0 can not open output file E:\autorun.inf" But continues to write data. After it has finished, I remove the drive and insert to the other computer and turn it on, but it never finds a drive to boot from. What is causing this problem and how can I fix it ?

In particular I'm interested in finding out what sort of industries are most likely to have more algorithm development/mathematical and logical problem solving slant rather than pure application development etc. Obviously, I'm assuming that some subset of the canonical data structures and associated algorithms (trees, lists, hash tables, sets, maps with search, insert, traversals etc.) are mostly going to be present in software development. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

  Due to some issues in my site many pages are visible as duplicate using : www.example.com/page.html?task=view but it's content is exactly same as www.example.com/page.html. One way is to use http 301 redirect from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html when anybody fetches page with arguments. But links like www.example.com/page.html?task=view will remain visible to outside world. Another way is canonicalization which I don't want to use as it is difficult to insert the tag in Joomla CMS. I want to hide www.example.com/page.html?task=view from external world. Is it possible to change the url from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html ? I mean if there is href link of www.example.com/page.html?task=view in my web page, it should be visible to external world as without any arguments. This is different from using 301 to convert externally accessed page : www.example.com/page.html?task=view to without using arguments in .htaccess.

  Is C# a good choice for ubuntu programming? E.g unity, or applications that will run on ubuntu? Am I doing good wanting to learn C# when I'm determined to stick with ubuntu and develop on it or for it? If not, can you give me reasons why?   I've built a new system, and I want to take full advantage of UEFI and Ubuntu. So I install Ubuntu, and try to boot from it, and my BIOS (Asus EZ Mode / Advanced Mode) simply says "No bootable medium found. Insert Bootable Medium and press any key to try again." So I've reinstalled several times, without any failures, Ubuntu IS installed, and I've tried Ubuntu Boot Repair (link below) and nothing I do seems to work.   i install ubuntu server 10.04, have 64 Gb VHD. And want to separate partitions in this mode: /dev/xvda0 p on swap (2 Gb) /dev/xvda1a0 e on /boot (128 Mb) /dev/xvda1a1 e on / type ffs (local) /dev/xvda1a2 e on /usr type ffs (local, nodev) /dev/xvda1a3 e on /tmp type ffs (local, nodev) /dev/xvda1a4 e on /var/log type ffs (local, nodev) /dev/xvda1a5 e on /var type ffs (local, nodev, nosuid) /dev/xvda1a6 e on /home type ffs (local, nodev, nosuid, with quotas) /dev/xvda2 p on /new (local, nodev, nosuid, noexec) with rest of space ~50Gb. But i'ma stuck, and don't know what size to give to each folder. Also i want to encrypt partitions. Thank you for any tips. EDIT: System need minimum size, here will be installed about 10 apps like ufw, apache,mysql, chkrootkit and so on.

• ClearTrace Supports SQL Server 2008 R2

  It was a long time coming and I hope worth the wait.  If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the same box as ClearTrace and you download the latest ClearTrace build (36) you’ll be able to read SQL Server 2008 R2 traces.  I also fixed a bug handling very, very large SQL statements.  I encountered an INSERT statement that was 12MB in size.  It was storing XML in a database.  ClearTrace uses regular expressions to clean up the SQL it finds.  Running two dozen regular expressions over this 12MB string caused the application to crash.  In this build I’m just skipping any statement over 1MB.  I’ll do something a little nicer in the next build. • Using apt-get from Canada

  I am using Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS, and until yesterday, everything was quite peachy. I have installed several packages (MySQL, apache2) and to my knowledge have those configured correctly. Upon configuration of phpMyAdmin, I found that I was missing the directory path /etc/phpmyadmin, which got me thinking about the install. I am new to Ubuntu, so I guess I missed the message telling me that I did not download phpMyAdmin successfully. Anyway, trying to use apt-get yesterday/today results in "Failed to fetch..." messages, even if just to run sudo apt-get update. Some notable details: ···no GUI, command line only (sudo apt-get gksu fails, go figure) ···can ping 4.2.2.2, so I know the internet is out there (somewhere) ···this is a dedicated computer, using Samba to share files with Windows, which does work ···attempted to edit my /sources.list file, for various American/Canadian mirror, to no effect ···ensured I have correct DNS settings in /etc/networks/interfaces I'm not sure where along the way it happened, but I seem to have lost connections to repositories... :) Any advice (including GO BACK TO WINDOWS) is appreciated.

I started self-teaching myself PHP although it has become a problem as the tutorials online are either outdated or just crap. I also managed to start learning with very little HTML knowledge so I am looking to brush up on my HTML knowledge and get more into PHP. I also am unsure weather I should be looking into XHTML or HTML5, or both so an answer to that would be splendid. I just want to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on other for my programming needs. I've searched Google for books but I'm just not sure which one is the "best" for me and makes for good practice and habits which brings me here.

• Alternatives to sql like databases

  Well i was wondering these days computers usually have 2GB or 4GB memory I like to use some secure client server model, and well an sql database is likely candidate. On the other hand i only have about 8000 records, who will not frequently be read or written in total they would consume less then 16 Megabyte. And it made me wonder what would be good secure options in a windows environment to store the data work with it multi-client single server model, without using SQL or mysql Would for well such a small amount of data maybe other ideas better ? Because i like to keep maintenance as simple as possible (no administrators would need to know sql maintenance, as they dont know databases in my target environment) Maybe storing in xml files or.. something else. Just wonder how others would go if ease of administration is the main goal. Oh and it should be secure to, the client server data must be a bit secure (maybe NTLM files shares https or...etc)

• Why Can't Computers Off My Network See the Site? [migrated]

  Have just set up Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. on my Ubuntu OS, and I was wondering why computers that are not on my network can not see the basic index.html that Apache uses as the default. I set up the static ip address for my computer, and I use 192.168.1.100 for computers to view the simple site. Is there something I am missing that will allow others to access my site? (It is REALLY simple; no graphics, CSS, etc.)
