Any recommended books/resources on component-based design?

I come from a background with heavy use of the classical object-oriented paradigm for software development. The company I am a part of switched to Unity not too long ago, and we're all very excited to get started using it However, one aspect that have sparked my interested, and which I think will become a very important part of our future development, is Unity's approach to component-based design with scripting; with less focus on typical hierarchical aspect. Question I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good books on this subject? I have had trouble finding any books or books with reliable reviews, and was wondering if anyone more experienced here had something to say on the issue? Any other kind of resource would be excellent too, I'm just interested in getting to learn everything I can about it. This is not meant as a discussion about best books or resources on the topic, but simply a question regarding any resources that any of you find useful. Thank you all for your time!

Xubuntu and other Debian based distros slow

I have a Compaq Presario SR1950NX desktop computer with the AMD64 3800+ processor and 1GB ram and it seems that Ubunutu, Xubuntu and Lubuntu are all laggy. Things seem to be slow such as clicking on menus and opening programs and the UI renders in peices. When using the browser the system slows down considerably. I ran the TOP command and I do notice that xorg hits 30 to 40 percent cpu when running the browsers. I have tried these distros on a spare P4 machine and it is even worse. As long as I don't have a several things open at one time I can manage to get around although sluggishly. I also notice that I can't get debian based distros to install in 64bit (crtc6 failure) only in 32bit. Can anyone tell me what is it that I might be doing wrong? I have an integrated Nvidia card and have tried several of the recommended drivers which sometimes result in no boot screen upon reboot. Thanks

Advise some swing based (open source) project to join

I am looking for some open source Swing based projects which wanted volunteer Java developers to join and the projects which show their products authors' names. I watched many links but most projects for some reason hide their authors names (showing some nick names or something...) and all developing process relative information... For example this one project it seems fine but still I couldn't find any information concerning some current project task(s), its developers group, some chronicles (tips, milestones, feedbacks etc) :( I googled a lot but found less :S So I wondering maybe you know some? I dearly hope you can give me a piece of advice Any useful comment is much appreciated

Color based collision detection

I am making a game where you fly a ship around some randomly generated planets. Since I am using a for loop to draw over 5000 planets, using the rectangle class or an oval-type class for this is not an option, since creating many objects will severely affect performance. Bitmasking each planet will likely result in performance issues too, so the only candidate is color based collision detection, because I don't need to apply some sort of object to everything I want to check for collisions. Is any way to check the perimeter around the ship for a certain color?

Can't Remove Logical Drive/Array from HP P400

This is my first post here. Thank you in advance for any assistance with this matter. I'm trying to remove a logical drive (logical drive 2) and an array (array "B") from my Smart Array P400. The host is a DL580 G5 running 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.7 (Tikanga). I am unable to remove the array using either hpacucli or cpqacuxe. I believe it is because of "OS Status: LOCKED". The file system that lives on this array has been unmounted. I do not want to reboot the host. Is there some way to "release" this logical drive so I can remove the array? Note that I do not need to preserve the data on logical drive 2. I intend to physically remove the drives from the machine and replace them with larger drives. I'm using the cciss kernel module that ships with Red Hat 5.7. After struggling with various problems and reading up on component-based systems and reading Bob Nystrom's excellent book "Game Programming Patterns" and in particular the chapter on Components I determined that this is a horrible idea: //Class intended to be inherited by all objects. Note: Following is my homework/assignment, feel free not to answer if you will. I want to delete/remove an element from an String array(Set) basic, I'm not allowed to use Collections..etc. Now I have this: void remove(String newValue) { for ( int i = 0; i < setElements.length; i++) { if ( setElements[i] == newValue ) { setElements[i] = ""; } } } I does what I want as it remove the element from an array but it doesn't shorten the length. [Java/Android] Multidimensional array to ListView.. how?

I have a query result set which I like to edit first and then put it to my ListView. How do I return specific keys from the $_POST array?

I would like to check to see if there are any keys in $_POST that contain a string. The string will not be the full key, only part of the key. (ie. search string = "delRowID", $_POST key = "delRowID_16"). I have tried to use array_keys($_POST,"delRowID"), but it has never returned anything. For example, this returns true, and makes sense: var x = [1,2]; 1 in x; // true This returns false, and makes sense: var x = [1,2]; 3 in x; // false However this returns true, and I don't understand why: var x = [1,2]; 0 in x; You can quickly test it by putting this in your browser's address bar: javascript:var x=[1,2]; alert(0 in x); Why does the "in" operator in Javascript return true when testing if "0" exists in array, even when the array doesn't appear to contain "0"?

for loop with count from array, limit output? PHP

How do I get around this? How can I access this nested array within my JSON object?

I'm using PHP to return a json_encode()'d array for use in my Javascript code. It's being returned as: {"parent1[]":["child1","child2","child2"],"parent2[]":["child1"]} By using the following code, I am able to access parent2 > child1 $.getJSON('myfile.php', function(data) { for (var key in data) { alert(data[key]); } } However, this doesn't give me access to child1, child2, child, of parent1. Alerting the key by itself shows 'parent1' but when I try to alert it's contents, I get undefined. I figured it would give me an object/array? How do I access the children of parent1? data[key][0] ?

Best way to pass a 2d array into javascript from php?

Ok, what i'm trying to do here is to pass a 2d array from php to javascript in the easiest way possible. The main reason for this is because i have the array which is previously filled with data via the phpscript and doing it one by one and just "calling it as it's needed" will not work out too well since well there's more than just one row required when it's called and i'd rather not do something like for all of the elements in it as it's number is unknown until it gets said data from the database. I was going to do a while loop to write in some of the data into elements sot hat it coudl be later pulled up more easily but i cannot seem to find an easy way to do this currently. If anyone has an easy way to transfer this to javascript without having to do what i previously said.

Also, I want to set attribute one by one. I can't think of if my array change to 10*10. How long it could be. So, I hope you guys can give me some suggestions on shorten the code, and more readable. thz

C++ How do you set an array of pointers to null in an initialiser list like way?

I am aware you cannot use an initialiser list for an array. However I have heard of ways that you can set an array of pointers to NULL in a way that is similar to an initialiser list. I am not certain how this is done. I have heard that a pointer is set to NULL by default, though I do not know if this is guaranteed/ in the C++ standard. I am also not sure if initialising through the new operator compared to normal allocation can make a difference too.

Flipping an image using a one dimensional array of characters.

I have the data of an image loaded into memory as a one dimensional array. Since I'm trying to use OpenGL to draw it, and since it reads from the bottom up, I want to try and flip the elements of the array before they're sent to OpenGL. Maybe there's a way to tell OpenGL to read from the top to the bottom? Anyways, I tried using a few methods of sorting arrays and they also flip the image horizontally, which is very much like the original problem. So can I flip the data only one way?

I have an array of data that looks like this: 2008, Honda, Accord, Used, Car And I'm trying to figure a way to make a number of sub strings from each item in the array. For example, I would like to loop each item and create the following substrings: 2008 2008 Honda 2008 Accord 2008 Used 2008 Car 2008 Honda Accord 2008 Honda Used 2008 Honda Car 2008 Accord Honda 2008 Accord Used 2008 Accord Car 2008 Used Honda 2008 Used Accord 2008 Used Car 2008 Car Honda 2008 Car Accord 2008 Car Used Honda Honda 2008 Honda Accord Honda Used Honda Car Honda 2008 Accord Honda 2008 Used etc ... I need to make sure that there are no duplicates created and I need to prevent it from adding the same word twice (ex: Honda Honda OR 2008 Honda 2008 - i dont want that). Has anyone wrote anything like this or know where I can find a script that works the same way?

What is the cheapest way to initialize a std::vector from a C-style array? Example: In the following class, I have a vector, but due to outside restrictions, the data will be passed in as C-style array: class Foo { std::vector<double> w_; public: void set_data(double* w, int len){ // how to cheaply initialize the std::vector? } Obviously, I can call w_.resize() and then loop over the elements, or call std::copy(). Are there any better methods?

What is the easiest way to set the value of an entire array?

My current project requires me to fill an array based upon some other values. I know there's the shortcut: int arr[4][4] = { {0,0,0,0} , {0,0,0,0} , {0,0,0,0} , {0,0,0,0} }; But in this case, I need to fill the array after its declaration. I currently have my code formatted like this: int arr[4][4]; if(someothervariable == 1){ arr = { {1,1,1,1}, {1,2,3,4}, {2,,3,4,5}, {3,4,5,6} }; } But it won't compile. Is there a way to make use of the mentioned shortcut in my case? If not, whats the best fix available? I'd appreciate a way to set it without explicitly assigning each element? ie: arr[0][0] = ...
