  How can I validate (a form element in this case) to ensure that the value is a currency? Have looked at Zend_Validate_Float. Needs to check that value is between 0 and 2dp. Ideally locale-aware (as ZVF is) to allow for locale specific formatting (thousands, decimal as comma/dot) Would also want to extend to allow/disallow negative values And provide optional upper/lower limits. Is the key, as I can do 3. and 4. with a chain. Do I need regex?

• Which is the best PDF library for PHP?

  I'm wondering which is the best PDF creation library for PHP, mainly for creating PDFs from scratch (not as much HTML to PDF)? I have worked with FPDF for quite a while now, but it's getting quite old and hasn't had much for updates. I found TCPDF the other day (thanks you another question on SO). It seems very good and is based on FPDF so I don't think it'd be a big transition. FPDI also supports TCPDF which is nice as I have used it before and found it be useful. I have also seen DOMPDF but it too hasn't had many updates for quite some time and is lacking a lot of functionality for general PDF generation. Zend (Zend_Pdf) as well as many other libraries have their own PDF libraries or extend another one, but you often have to setup the entire library, which for existing projects can be a problem. What other libraries are there and what have your experiences with them been with the above or other libraries?

• Passing unknown classes to String Streams in C++

  I am using a template function and I am passing and I may be sending instances of a variety of classes to a string stream. What can I do to make sure this continues to work? Let me be more specific where do I define the behavior for this? Is there some member that should be on each class being sent to the string stream, should I in some enhance or extend the existing String stream (I was thinking building a class that inherits from sstream and overloads the << operator to handle all the possible classes)? I had trouble even finding documentation on this, so even links to more resources would be helpful.

• How can I make datagridview can only select the cells in the same column at a time?

  I am using winforms to develop my application. And I set my datagridview control's selectionmode to "CellSelect", and this allow the user to select as many cells as he want which spread over several columns; but I want to constraint my user can only select cells in single column at a time, and there isn't any such kind of selectionmode for me. So If I want to implement this, how can I extend the datagridview class ? I also think that I can check in eventhandler whenever the selection cells are changed, through which I might make the user can not select cells spread over multiple columns, but this is not that good, I think. Can any other people help me to find out a better solution ?

  You may argue that this question has a legal flavor to it, and that would be correct. Still, it is also a question from a developer's perspective that may help others. I'm building an image community web site/application. Users can upload images. During upload, users have to select the license (copyrighted, attribution non-commercial or public domain). No matter which license they choose, it is just a piece of data. No matter the license, all users can view all images and also download all images, as you normally do on websites. My question is: what responsibility do I have as a "platform" to comply with these licenses? Do I need to actively prevent certain actions on these images, and into what extend? Is displaying the license enough to be legally safe? What if one of my users uploads images for which he has no license? Is it enough to just implement a "report this" feature?

• Ways to save enums in database

  Hey guys. I am wondering what the best ways to save enums into a database is. I know there are name() and valueOf() methods to make it into a String back. But are there any other (flexible) options to store these values? Is there a smart way to make them into unique numbers (ordinal() is not safe to use)? Any comments and suggestions would be helpful :) Update: Thanks for all awesome and fast answers! It was as I suspected. However a note to 'toolkit'; That is one way. The problem is that I would have to add the same methods with each enum type i create. Thats a lot of duplicated code and, at the moment, Java does not support any solutions to this (You cannot let enum extend other classes). However, thanks for all answers!

• Java, filling arrays, and inheritance

  Hi folks, I think I'm running into an inheritance conceptual wall with my Java arrays. I'm kind of new to Java so please tell me if I have things upside down. In essence, I want to do three things: Create a runnersArray with the attributes of my Runners class. Fill my runnersArray using my GenerateObjects method of my GenerateObjects class. Access the contents of my filled runnersArray in my Evaluating method of my Evaluating class. The problem seems to be that runnersArray is not visible to the methods in steps 2 and 3 above, but their classes (due to design reasons) cannot inherit or extend Runners class. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. • Cleaning up temp folder after long-running subprocess exits

  I have a Python script (running inside another application) which generates a bunch of temporary images. I then use subprocess to launch an application to view these. When the image-viewing process exists, I want to remove the temporary images. I can't do this from Python, as the Python process may have exited before the subprocess completes. I.e I cannot do the following: p = subprocess.Popen(["imgviewer", "/example/image1.jpg", "/example/image1.jpg"]) p.communicate() os.unlink("/example/image1.jpg") os.unlink("/example/image2.jpg") ..as this blocks the main thread, nor could I check for the pid exiting in a thread etc The only solution I can think of means I have to use shell=True, which I would rather avoid: cmd = ['imgviewer'] cmd.append("/example/image2.jpg") for x in cleanup: cmd.extend(["&&", "rm", x]) cmdstr = " ".join(cmd) subprocess.Popen(cmdstr, shell = True) This works, but is hardly elegant, and will fail with filenames containing spaces etc.. Basically, I have a background subprocess, and want to remove the temp files when it exits, even if the Python process no longer exists.

• Perform selector on parent NSOperation

  I extend NSOperation (call it A) which contains NSOperationQueue for other NSOperations (which is another extended class different from A, call these operations B). When operation A is running (executing B operations) how do i call a specific function/method on operation A when certain event takes place on B operations? • NSPredicates with custom objects

  Hi, I have the following problem and I cannot figure out how to solve it. I have an NSSet which contains Person objects (NSDictionary with 2 keys: name, age). From time to time I get an NSArray of Person objects and I want to add them to my NSSet but I want to filter out the duplicates. I'm thinking I could use NSPredicates but I am reading the documentation and I can't understand how should I format my NSPredicate to filter out my array content based on what I already have in NSSet. So I have an NSSet with 5 custom objects and I get an NSArray with 6 objects but 3 of them already exist in NSSet and I want to filter them out. I understand what I should do with basic objects like Strings, integers, etc but I don't know how to extend this to work with custom more complex objects. I hope I was clear enough with my problem. Any starting point, example or advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

• How to determine Windows.Diagnostics.Process from ServiceController

  This is my first post, so let me start by saying HELLO! I am writing a windows service to monitor the running state of a number of other windows services on the same server. I'd like to extend the application to also print some of the memory statistics of the services, but I'm having trouble working out how to map from a particular ServiceController object to its associated Diagnostics.Process object, which I think I need to determine the memory state. I found out how to map from a ServiceController to the original image name, but a number of the services I am monitoring are started from the same image, so this won't be enough to determine the Process. Does anyone know how to get a Process object from a given ServiceController? Perhaps by determining the PID of a service? Or else does anyone have another workaround for this problem? • How Can I Add a New Command to a Control's Event

  Hi, thanks for taking a look at this question. I have been building an application (VB/WPF) following Josh Smith's example of an MVVM pattern: Click here to view My Views have Controls which trigger a Command upon an event, such as a button click and these are bound to properties in the ViewModel. My ViewModel exposes properties of type ICommand which invoke the appropriate methods. This has worked well, until now! I now want to use a Thumb Control to allow a user to move an object within a Canvas. I don't believe that the Thumb has a Command capability 'out of the box'. A Thumb raises a 'DragDelta' event when being moved. So my question is as follows: How do I extend a Control's capability to issue a Command upon an event please? I wish to issue a new Command, let's say 'onDragDelta' so that I can bind it to a property in my ViewModel just like my Buttons. Thank you very much

• Spring/Hibernate/Junit example of testing DAO against HSQLDB

  Hi guys, I'm working on trying to implement a JUnit test to check the functionality of a DAO. (The DAO will create/read a basic object/table relationship in HSQLDB). The trouble I'm having is the persistence of the DAO (for the non-test code) is being completed through an in-house solution using Spring/Hibernate, which eliminates the usual *.hbm.xml templates that most examples I have found contain. Beacuse of this, I'm having some trouble understanding how to setup a JUnit test to implement the DAO to create/read (just very basic funtionality) to an in-memory HSQLDB. I have found a few examples, but the usage of the in-house persistence means I can't extend some of the classes the examples show (I can't seem to get the application-context.xml setup properly). Can anyone suggest any projects/examples I could take a look at (or any documentation) to further my understanding of the best way to implement this test functionality? I feel like this should be really simple, but I keep running into problems implementing the examples I have found. Thanks in advance!

• Extending Django-tagging, adding extra field to each tag?

  heya, We're coding together a Django app to handle reviews of newspaper articles. Each newspaper article model will an arbitrary number of tags associated with it. Also, each tag will have an optional ranking (0 to 10). I was thinking of using django-tagging to do this (http://code.google.com/p/django-tagging/), but I'm not sure of the best way to add the ranking to the system. Should I extend django-tagging somehow? (Not sure if this is possible, without changing django-tagging's actual code?). Or is there a better way of achieving this? Cheers, Victor

On the web I found some implementation e.g. DJ NFS, but the open question is how mature and fast they are. Can anyone purpose a good starting point, has anyone experience with such things? P.S. I know Hadoop DFS and I used it for some projects, but Hadoop is not a good fit for the things I want to do here. --EDIT-- Hadoop is really focused on highly scalable, high throughput computing without the possibilities to overwrite parts of a file and so an.   So, I'd like to implement my own custom authorization system in MVC2. If I'd have to create a global class, where do I instantiate it? Can HttpContext be extended with my own additions and where do I do that? Should I use Authorization filters for rights validation or ActionFilters or do it within an action? Can ActionFilter pass any data to the action itself? Previously (in WebForms) I was using a Session object where I would put a serialized object containing essential user data (account id and a list of roles and rights) and I'd extend my own Page class.

To do this I put a block above and below the div so I could add and in them respectively.   I'm starting out with classes in Javascript and have hit a wall. I've looked all over for a tutorial that goes a little further than simply how to construct a class (usually Animal) then extend the class and have a Method do something (Dog alert('Bark');). I have created a class that I want a user to be able to instantiate (is that the right word)? For example the first stage in my program is for the user to give the class a name, and then start to populate the various variables in the class. When they've done that they may do it again many times. So if: var className = new MyObject(); How do I dynamically create the name of the new object className and then refer to it later in the code?

  I'm curious how to specify options to a jQuery plugin in a way that some are required, some are optionally overridden, and some can't be touched. I started off with the usual: jQuery.fn.plugin = function (options){ var defaults = { username: "", posts:10, api: "http://myapi.com" } var settings = jQuery.extend({}, defaults, options); } Let's say I want username to be required, posts is optional (defaults to 10) and you (you being the user of the plugin) can't change api, even if they try. In some part of my code I need something like this: $product_type = $product->type; $price_field = 'field_'.$product_type.'_price'; $price = $product->$$price_field; In other words I need kind of KVC - means get object field by field name produced at the runtime. I simply need to extend some existing system and keep field naming convention so do not advice me to change field names instead. I know something like this works for arrays, when you could easily do that by: $price = $product[$price_field_key]. So I can produce key for array dynamically. But how to do that for objects? Got requirement to implement localization for simple image button generated by JS: <img src="..." onclick="..." title="Close" /> What's the best technique to localize title of it? P.s. Found a solution by Ayende. This is the right direction. Edit: I got Localization helper class which provides Controller.Resource('foo') extension method. Thinking about to extend it (helper) so it could return all JavaScript resources (from "ClientSideResources" subfolder in App_LocalResources) for specified controller by it's name. Then - call it in BaseController, add it to ViewData and render it in Layout. Would that be a good idea?

• Is it possible to build a JPA entity by extending a POJO?

  Lets say I have the following POJO: public class MyThing { private int myNumber; private String myData; //assume getter/setter methods } Is it now possible to extend this POJO as a JPA entity? @Entity @Table(name = "my_thing") public class MyThingEntity extends MyThing implements Serializable { @Column(name = "my_number") //????????? @Column(name = "my_data") //???????? } I want to keep the POJO separate from the JPA entity. The POJO lives in a different project and is often used without a persistence layer, my project wants to persist it in a database and do so without the overhead of mapping from a POJO to an entity and back. I understand that JPA entities are POJOs, but in order to use it I would have to include a library that implements javax.persistence and the other projects using the same base object have no use for a persistence layer. Is this possible? Is this a good idea?
