  • Does low latency code sometimes have to be "ugly"?

    - by user997112
(This is mainly aimed at those who have specific knowledge of low latency systems, to avoid people just answering with unsubstantiated opinions). Do you feel there is a trade-off between writing "nice" object orientated code and writing very fast low latency code? For instance, avoiding virtual functions in C++/the overhead of polymorphism etc- re-writing code which looks nasty, but is very fast etc? It stands to reason- who cares if it looks ugly (so long as its maintainable)- if you need speed, you need speed? I would be interested to hear from people who have worked in such areas.

  • Relationship between databases [closed]

    - by user1525474
Hi I am getting ready to create my first web aplication.I have some knowledge of databases but I have never used databases with relationship created beetween them and also I am not sure how to acces the data in the relationship. My experience is limited to basic CRUD applications and working on simple tables with no realtionship using PHP and MySql. For example I will be creating a login system and for each user I would like to create a profile page that store different data(name , address , profile image etc.).Some of the info will be the same in both tables so there is no point in creating the same table twice. What I would like is if anyone can tell of some tutorials so I can better understand the concept?

  • Objective-C library recommendation for AES-256 in CTR mode

    - by lpfavreau
Hello, I'm looking for recommendations on an Objective-C library for AES-256 encryption in CTR mode. I have a database full of data encrypted with another library using CTR and seems the included CCCrypt only supports ECB or CBC with PKCS#7. Any idea on the best portable library I should use? I'm not looking to port the original implementation as I don't have the required knowledge in cryptography and hence, that's-a-bad-idea (tm). Thanks!

  • Becoming a better Android programmer

    - by Drew Dara-Abrams
Any suggestions on how to become a better Android programmer? I'm past intro tutorials, which mainly focus on how to use pieces of the SDK, but I still struggle to structure big Android apps. Obviously the best use of my time is continuing with my coding projects, but I'm wondering if I should be learning more about Android particulars, solidifying my somewhat shaky Java knowledge, going back to object-oriented fundamentals or patterns...? Pointers to resources (books, example apps, sites) you've found helpful would be great.

  • OCR for Devanagari (Hindi / Marathi / Sanskrit)

    - by Egon
Does anybody have any idea about any recent work being done on optical character recognition for Indian scripts using modern Machine Learning techniques ? I know of some research being done at ISI, calcutta, but nothing new has come up in the last 3-4 years to the best of my knowledge, and OCR for Devanagari is sadly lacking!

  • Scala for Junior Programmers?

    - by Traldin
Hi, we are considering Scala for a new Project within our company. We have some Junior Programmers with only PHP knowledge, and we are in doubt that they can handle Scala. What are your opinions? Some say: "Scala is a complicated beast!", some say: "It's easy once you got it." Maybe someone has real-world experience?

  • XSS filtering function in PHP

    - by codecowboy
Hi, Does anyone know of a good function out there for filtering generic input from forms? Zend_Filter_input seems to require prior knowledge of the contents of the input and I'm concerned that using something like HTML Purifier will have a big performance impact. What about something like : http://snipplr.com/view/1848/php--sacar-xss/ Many thanks for any input.

  • Software tools to automatically decrypt a file, whose encryption algorithm (and/or encryption keys)

    - by Andrew
I have an idea for encryption that I could program fairly easily to encrypt some local text file. Given that my approach is novel, and does not use any of the industry standard encryption techniques, would I be able to test the strength of my encryption using 'cracker' apps or suchlike? Or do all those tools rely on advanced knowledge of the encryption process (or intercepted 'keys'), meaning I'd have to build my own cracker for testing?

  • A good web data extraction/screen scraper program?

    - by Taylor
I need to capture product data from a site on a regular basis and wondered if any one knows of a good software program? I've trialed Mozenda but its a monthly subscription and pricey in the long term. Obviously something thats free would be best but I don't mind paying either. Just need a decent program thats reliable and doesn't require much programming knowledge.

  • Creating cross platform applications

    - by Anant
I have a fair bit of knowledge of Java and C#.NET (prefer C#). What should I use to create small applications that will work well in Windows, Mac and Linux? Speed will probably not be the main concern (small applications; using Sockets etc).

  • Is Silverlight hard to learn?

    - by Sahat
Hi I understand I will be getting pretty subjective opinions but give it to me anyway. How hard is Silverlight for someone who has beginner-level knowledge of Java? On the scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate Silverlight learning difficulty?

  • Saving new indicies, triangles and normals after WPF 3D transform

    - by sklitzz
Hi, I have a 3D model which is lying flat currently, I wish for it to be rotated 90 degrees around the X axis. I have no problem doing this with the transforms. But to my knowledge all the transforms are a bunch of matrices multiplied. I would like to have the transform really alter all the coordinates of the indicies of the model. Is there a way to "save changes" after I apply a transform?

  • Is CSS turing complete?

    - by Adam Davis
CSS isn't, insofar as I know, Turing complete. But my knowledge of CSS is very limited. Is CSS Turing complete? Are any of the existing draft or committees considering language features that might enable Turing completeness if it isn't right now?

  • In Objective C, what's the best way to extract multiple substrings of text around multiple patterns?

    - by Matt
For one NSString, I have N pattern strings. I'd like to extract substrings "around" the pattern matches. So, if i have "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" and my patterns are "brown" and "lazy" i would like to get "quick brown fox" and "the lazy dog." However, the substrings don't necessarily need to be delimited by whitespace. I have a hunch that there's a very easy solution to this, but I admit a disturbing lack of knowledge of Objective C string functions.

  • Implementing Projectile Motion

    - by DMan
I've scored the internet for sources and have found a lot of useful information, but they are math sites trying to tell me how to solve what angle an object has to be at to reach y location. However, I'm trying to run a simulation, and haven't found any solid equations that can be implemented to code to simulate a parabolic curve. Can those with some knowledge of physics help me on this?
