• Windows 7 explorer crashing trying to read external hard disk

  I have a 1TB Western Digital hard drive which is almost full and last time I tried to plug it into my laptop, I got a Windows dialog saying "this hard drive needs to be formatted". I did not panic because I have experienced things like this before and I know it's often solved by simply re-inserting the drive. Now however, whenever I plug it in and try to browse it in explorer by going to "computer", the explorer process crashes after a while. I simply close explorer since it takes ages trying to read the disk and nothing happens. After searching on the internet, the best thing to do would be a chkdsk. I tried it via properties in explorer (which also took a good 5 minutes to open up), locks up as well, after waiting a couple of minutes it says there's no access to the disk so a chkdsk is not possible... I want to make clear that I always use safe removal before pulling out the USB cable. Last time however, safe removal just would not work and when trying to shut down Windows, the logoff screen just would not disappear (I've waited at least 10 minutes or so) and I powered off the PC by force. This may be the cause of the problems but the disk was still recognised immediately after that. I really don't want to format this thing because it contains C: clones of 3 computers and a lot of other stuff that I don't want to re-copy. What would be the best course of action? Update I got chkdsk working via the command line. I used the /F and /R options. I already got a bunch of lines saying "file record segment X is unreadable" or whatever it is in English, my OS is Dutch. It looks bad... Will chdsk repair these errors?

• When resizing Windows Explorer on Windows 8 it crashes?

  I have following problem: When I try to change size of any explorer window from maximized to some size getting following screen It blinks 20-30 times, then crashes. • Power outage, Server 2K3 remains on "applying computer settings"

  My reward for clicking the "test" button in the APC UPS software was that it completely cut the power to my SQL server. The server promptly rebooted, the SQL service is running (verified by the app on another server that queries it), but the GUI has remained on "applying computer settings" for 20 minutes and counting, and it forbids RDC connections. Since SQL is up, it is fulfilling its key role, but it's obviously not right. What step to take next? Wait longer? Hardware is a Dell Poweredge 2850, internal RAID10.

• Did Adobe Photoshop just killed my Graphics Card for good?

  I was working with Adobe Photoshop, just some regular work, when I came to edit a PSD file and change the text of some layer, when all of a sudden the PC froze. No mouse, screen is frozen, keyboard strokes aren't getting me anything, no Task Manager, nada. So I rebooted my PC, and then something quite terrifying appeared before my eyes. It was not the Checkdisk utility that was launched, that made me terrified (by the way, that reboot damaged the partition table of an external HDD that was connected at the time to my PC, but that's another story). It was the screen itself. Please have a look. So after Checkdisk finished and Windows loaded, I noticed that the resolution was not right. Instead of 1440x900 which I had set, it was 1280x1024. When I went to change it back, I had no option to change back to my old resolution, and has only 3 other general resolution properties, as if my Video Card (GeForce 8800 GTS btw) was not recognized. And what do you know, in the Device Manager it appeared with an exclamation mark. Inside the hardware, it said this: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) Uninstalling the drivers, downloading the newest drivers from NVIDIA and installing them did not work. It always comes back to this. So, do you have any advice before I go out and buy a new graphics card? I thought this was the only option left, but maybe the experts at Super User can help me out. By the way, the dotted screen appears after every reboot, and I see the dots when the ASUS Motherboard screen shows up at boot. Thanks in advance.

• Computer is dying--what should I be looking for?

  Okay, I'm a bit knowledgeable with pooters and such, but i'm confused. My computer is dying slowly, and I'm not sure what part is causing this. Computer details: Vista, dell machine, intel Q6600, 2.4 Core Duo (quad core), standard memory and drive (unknown manufacturer). Symptoms: I would best describe the symptoms as memory corruption. After a couple days on, I start getting applications crashing or failing to open for a lack of "resources". Sounds are corrupted. Onscreen text gets corrupted; the characters of text are garbled, not the pixels on the screen. Video memory seems untouched as I haven't seen any misplaced pixels. Recently I've lost files on disk. I've also experienced errors reporting a supposed lack of disk space, even though I have fifty gigs free. There was one point where I couldn't get to the POST when booting up. After I cleaned everything (see next) this hasn't happened. Diagnostic steps: First thing I did was clean the case. There was a lot of dust buildup on heatsinks, so I cleaned all that up. No help. Next, I disconnected and reconnected everything, from power cables to memory (did not reseat cpu). No change. Last, I ran the standard vista memory diagnostics and ran checkdisk. Both reported no errors found. I have not run any POST tests, now that I think about it. I'm at a loss at this point. Disk appears fine, memory too. I'd expect motherboard issues to result in the thing not booting up, yet it does every time. What should I be looking at? What more can I do?

• Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) subpixel font rendering crashes Xorg

  Hi everyone... I really don't know how to solve this on my own so I thought giving this site a chance. After upgrading to Lucid I ran into some problems. With some experimenting I came to a conclusion that if I enable subpixel smoothing on fonts the moment I start any other application not native to GTK+ (wine, openoffice, wxWidgets, ...) my X server crashes the same moment. At first this seemed like something went wrong during installation. To cut the long story short, after 3 clean installations and whole bunch of experimenting the same thing happens all over again. Strange thing is... if I configure any other font smoothing besides subpixel, everything works like it should. Any thoughs?

  I'm using WinXP and here is my question: I run an application, such as Chrome, there would be one app in the task bar, and it's fine. Suppose a new window of Chrome opened(so there would be 2 window and 2 in the task bar), and when I close that,the 2nd one, the whole application just shutdown. And so does chrome, firefox, evernote, Becky!(the email client), even TortoiseSVN. So I think there should be a generic problem cause these applications shutdown, such as the platform - WinXP. Please give me some advice or hint, anything comes to your mind would be helpful!

• How can I prevent Windows Update from crashing my computer?

  I have Automatic Updates enabled and every now and then I'll get that little pop-up window that nags me to reboot to complete the update process. Usually, I ignore it and after 2 days my computer crashes. It crashes by freezing all the programs, including Windows Explorer, to the point that I can't even use CTRL-Alt-Delete (and my mouse lags). I'm pretty sure it's Windows Updates that is causing this. So, for now, I've disabled Windows Updates.

• Window 7 hangs on using Adobe Reader

  Window 7 often hangs when i open some pdf file with Adobe Reader. First of all, Adobe Reader crashes and as soon as it stops, the window hangs and after few seconds, it displays a message quoting "Dumping Physical Memory" in a typical Windows98 manner and then the system reboots. This problem persists each time i use Adobe Reader. However, i have installed Foxit Reader to view Pdf files. But there are some issues with that also. As sometimes i have editable files, which could be done in Adobe Reader's newest version only. Suggestions on how to solve this problem would be appreciated.

• Applications on my laptop crashees every 10-20 minutes [closed]

  In my windows 7 home premium, several of my application crashes after some minutes even wehn I am not touching system. For example I have outlook 2007, that works fine, but suddenly crashes. The same about visual studio 2012. It is also crashes after some minute no matter if I am working on a project or I am not touching it. the same behaviour is there, for other applications (skype, oovoo and ...). I use Microsoft security essential and there is no virus on my system. I also checked my system with Sophos anti root kit and there is no root kit there. What would be the problem?

• Random BSOD ntoskrnl.exe (Windows 7)

  I get BSOD at random times and have been for a while now on my Windows 7 machine. It is really new, and I already tried wiping the graphic card drivers and installing them again (making sure that they are of course up to date). I get a variety of bug check strings on a few different drivers. The single file that is in all of my BSODs is ntoskrnl.exe Bug Check Strings - SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION - KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED - DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA I would rather not resort to getting a completely new PC, as I have already thrown a lot of money on my current one. • How to save your Linux state (suspend to disk) periodically to recover from crashes?

  One in a while my laptop crashes/dies because of a bad/empty battery, crappy wifi driver or whatever other reason. For a while I've wondered if it's possible to force Linux to periodically save the state (like vmware snapshots) to disk so you can restore from that with possibly slightly outdated work but at least with all of your apps open in the same state you've left them. I don't really see the point in having to boot everything from cratch constantly, although KDE saves your state on logout, that doesn't happen periodically (by default) either. It would make it much nicer to recover from your crashes if your ram was written to disk periodically. Anyone know if there's a system call to do this without also shutting down the machine? Even a manual button to save the entire state would be nice.

• How can I debug a Windows service that crashes?

  I have a .NET Windows service that appears to be crashing due to C00000005 (access violation--according to Dr Watson). When I attach the VS debugger to it--whether I build it with or without symbols--the VS debugger just stops when the service crashes, instead of stopping to give me a chance to do any investigation. Is that to be expected, or am I doing something wrong? Will using WinDbg let me do something more in real time (obviously, WinDbg lets me do crash dump analysis)? Thanks!

• iPhone app works hundreds of times, then crashes from memory error on startup, then never works unti

  I have a Cocos2d/openGL iPhone game. It's a universal app and I'm dealing with an occasional but nasty error on the iPad. We are loading a lot of textures up front (3 2048x2048 textures). I'm working on reducing this up front load, but what worries me is I really don't understand the root cause of this crash that permanently breaks the app. This is the deal: 1. App works fine for hundreds of plays on the iPad 2. Eventually (I'm guessing due to other programs using up some memory and not letting go or whatever) the app starts crashing on startup. It just closes again in the middle of loading. 3. The App will now never work again on that iPad, closing immediately every time, until the iPad is restarted. Obviously my app is demanding too much memory up front to work reliably every time, I get that. What I don't get is why when it fails once, it has failed forever until the iPad is restarted. Can anyone explain what is going on here? EDIT: forgot to add organizer crash lags just say low memory, like this every time (I changed my app name to MyAppName below). • Deliberately crashing an external process under Windows

  I would like to synthesise a native code fault. This is so that we can see where in particular some debugging output gets put when that occurrs. Pskill (from Sys-Internals) causes a graceful exit. DotCrash.exe doesn't seem to be available anymore from Microsoft directly. Is there any way to externally cause a crash in a process?

  In MSVC, how can I make any unhandled C++ exception (std::runtime_error, for instance) crash my release-compiled program so that it generates a dump with the full stack from the exception throw location? I have installed NTSD in the AeDebug registry an can generate good dumps for things like memory access violation, so the matter here comes down to crashing the program correctly, I suppose. • How do I get the "bucket id" that winqual uses if I have a minidump file or exception structure? (Windows c++)

  There are a few related questions on SO - but have not found the answer - I would like to generate a "signature"/bucket id to report a minidump/crash back to our issue tracking system. Since MS already does this with "bucket ids" I figured I could just re-use their bucket/signature generation. Can I get that ID from either a top level filter or the _EXCEPTION_POINTERS object I have inside the filter or the _MINIDUMP_EXCEPTION_INFORMATION structure or from the minidump itself? This is a C++ application.

• VC++ 6.0 application crashing inside CString::Format when %d is given.

  A VC++ 6.0 application is crashing when doing a CString::Format operation with %d format specifier. This does not occur always but occurs when the application memory grows upto 100MB or more. ALso sometimes same crash observed when a CString copy is done.
