• Xen Disk Performence Issues

  I'm currently using Xen PV on CentOS 5 with my domU's as flat files running on a hardware RAID controlled (write cache enabled) formatted with XFS. On the dom0 I can get about 500MB/s in a 2GB dd write from /dev/zero however on the domU's I'm lucky if I get 10MB/s (it is usually around half that). I've tried changing the disk scheduling to NOOP on the domU's, changed some mount parameters and tweaked the performance allocations of both the dom0 (prioritize CPU) and domU's (increase RAM and VCPU allocations). None of these steps have produced any noticeable change in performance. My instinct here is that it is not a hardware problem, due to the solid performance of the dom0. Any ideas on what might be causing this problem? I'm considering moving to LVM based domU's.

• chroot for unsecure programs execution

  Hi, I have never set-up a chroot-jailed environment before and I am afraid I need some help to do it well. To explain shortly what this is all about: I have a webserver to which users send python scripts to process various files that are stored on the server (the system is for Research purpose). Everyday a cron job starts the execution of the uploaded scripts via a command of this kind: /usr/bin/python script_file.py All of this is really insecure and I would like to create a jail in which I would copy the necessary files (uploaded scripts, files to process, python binary and dependencies). I already looked at various utilities to create jails but none of them seemed up-to-date or were lacking solid documentation (ie. the links proposed in How can I run an untrusted python script) Could anyone guide me to a viable solution to my problem? like a working example of a script that creates a jail, put some files in it and executes a python script? • Battery won't charge and BSOD: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

  I have a Dell Vostro 1510 running Windows 7. Today when I pulled my machine out of it's bag and plugged it in, the little battery light on the side blinked constantly instead of staying solid, and Windows showed a message that the battery was not charging. The battery is 3.5 years old, but it can still hold the machine in standby overnight, so I don't know why it won't charge anymore. After I have had the machine on for a while (20 minutes the first time, 40 minutes the second time), it shows a blue screen of death with the message DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and reboots. I can deal with the battery being dead, but not with blue screens of death. Does anyone know how to fix it? Edit: Potentially relevant, this started happening after an OS update was automatically installed on Friday and Windows started nagging to reboot. The first BSOD was before the reboot; the update made a lot of registry changes when the machine came up, and the second BSOD was 40 minutes later.

• Recording Interfaces for OS X that are supported/work well?

  For os x, I would like to know what other audio production/music recording interface type products people have found to work well with os x? I do not want to know about stuff that only works. I want to know about solid products that work well and are supported well by the company when issues arise. I for example have a M-Audio Firewire Solo recording interface. I have found M-Audio to be a company with great mac support for their products and they integrate well with os x features and apple software. Clarification: I am wondering about the recording interfaces themselves, as in the hardware, that are compatible with os x and supported/work/integrate well.

• Problem downloading Android SDK?

  So I'm trying to download the Android SDK for Windows from their website but it isn't working. The download seems to proceed without a hitch but something is wrong because the downloaded .zip is only 2-3 MB (size varies), MD5 doesn't match and the file won't open or extract. Obviously the download is corrupt but I have no idea why. A quick google didn't turn up anyone else with this problem to indicate that it might be on the server side. My connection is rock solid and I've never had issues with it so I'm not sure what it could be on my end. I tried downloading the linux version as well and tried using the alternate link, both to no avail. Having recently discovered this amazing community I thought I'd ask here. Any ideas?

  Gzipping a tar file as whole is drop dead easy and even implemented as option inside tar. So far, so good. However, from an archiver's point of view, it would be better to tar the gzipped single files. (The rationale behind it is, that data loss is minified, if there is a single corrupt gzipped file, than if your whole tarball is corrupted due to gzip or copy errors.) Has anyone experience with this? Are there drawbacks? Are there more solid/tested solutions for this than find folder -exec gzip '{}' \; tar cf folder.tar folder

  I've searched high and low for a good resource for learning the Linux command line. I've found a handful of separate resources, but none that really can assist in web server management. I'm currently learning through trial an error with 'man' pages, along with Google. • ESXI with non standard hardware HDD issues

  I have 3 very underutilized servers that I am condensing to one of those shuttle PC's with VMWare ESXi The HDD seems to be the bottle neck right now (the light is almost always pure solid) right now I have a single 1TB Seagate 7200.11 connected by SATA. VMWare ESXi cannot detect it when running in AHCI mode, but does when running in IDE mode. I have read that IDE mode can give a 5% performance hit which might give me enough breathing room. However, I am open to setting up an external eSATA or some sort of raid to give me more than just the 5%. I am just weary of sinking some money into a bit of hardware without knowledge of whether it will work. Does anyone know of resources or procedures of how to get this working.

• Windows 2003 Server Suddenly Drops Connections to everything but PING and port 80 (webserver)

  Hi, I'm running a Windows 2003 Dedicated server, and the box has been rock solid for more than 2 years now. Just recently, I have had an issue where after a certain ammount of time the server will just stop accepting connections on all ports except 80, and still responds to pings. If you surf to a static HTML page on the box, you can display it. If you pull up a PHP file that has an outside database connection, it fails. RDP refuses to connect, and LogMeIn reports that "The connection was reset" The only fix at this time is to have the provider physically reboot my box to correct the issue. The event log doesn't seem to be leaving helpful messages, and I am at a lost to what is causing this error since I have not installed any new software in months on it. Any tips or help would be appreciated to tracking down this issue. I don't mind updating the question as responses come in, I just do not know where to start troubleshooting because it seems random at this time.

• Dell Inspiron 530 - SSD Worth it?

  I'm going to be upgrading my Dell Inspiron 530 (2.0 Ghz Intel Dual Core CPU, 3 GB RAM) to windows 7 soon, and rather than backup and reformat my existing drive, I'm planning on getting a 2nd drive to replace my current primary, and moving it to a secondary. Thus, this seems like an excellent time to get a solid-state drive, if its going to be worth it. As far as I can tell this machine has a SATA-I controller, and I'm unsure if I'll see a noticeable performance increase with an SSD without going to SATA-II. So I have a three part question here given all that: Will spending the money on a SSD be worth it if hook it into a SATA-I controller? Is it reasonable to upgrade the controller on this machine to a SATA-II controller? Given that this PC is kind of old to begin with, am I better off performance wise to just stick with a faster HDD?

• Can I rent exclusive time on a powerful server running linux? [closed]

  My company is involved in a proposal that requires speed estimates of our software on a server with the latest & greatest processors. This is not the first time we've been in this situation. The servers themselves are too expensive to buy a new one every time, so we end up extrapolating from what we have. There are so many variables: processor generation & speed, memory speed, memory channels, cache configurations; it makes extrapolation difficult and error-prone. Is there a business that rents time on the newest servers? At least part of the time we'd need exclusive access to an otherwise quiescent system either via ssh shell access or unattended batch jobs. I am not looking for general cloud computing services. I don't need much time on the server, but it needs to be exclusive. And the server needs to be pretty cutting edge for a solid basis of estimate.

• Would SSD drives benefit from a non-default allocation unit size?

  The default allocation unit size recommended when formatting a drive in our current set-up is 4096 bytes. I understand the basics of the pros and cons of larger and smaller sizes (performance boost vs. space preservation) but it seems the benefits of a solid state drive (seek times massively lower than hard disks) may create a situation where a much smaller allocation size is not detrimental. Were this the case it would at least partially help to overcome the disadvantage of SSD (massively higher prices per GB). Is there a way to determine the 'cost' of smaller allocation sizes specifically related to seek times? Or are there any studies or articles recommending a change from the default based on this newer tech? (Assume the most average scattering of sizes program files, OS files, data, mp3s, text files, etc.)

  As Hosting.com are no longer offerring Windows VPS accounts, we are looking for a new US based provider. Looking for something that offers standard Windows IIS hosting for a Dotnetnuke portal site with SQL Server Express or Web. Basic managed services for OS updates as well as regular backups required. Good level of support and solid uptime is critical. Budget in the $150-$200 month range but flexible depeding on quality and services offerred. Anyone have any suggestions and good feedback they can share? Currently looking at Jodohost as an option but would like some other possibilities as their support can be suspect at times we have found. A cloud solution in same range would also be an option.

• OS Isolation: Virtualization or Dual-Boot Duplication, a General How To?

  I want to isolate my windows 7 operating system and I have looked into virtualization. This should work with Linux, however, I do want to still have a way to run windows 7 securely, but without significant performance loss, thus eliminating virtualization for that. I know that you can dual boot because I currently do so with my XP/Linux system. Is there a way that I can duplicate my windows 7 system so I can select one at bootup? This way I can ensure that each OS is isolated and not worry about performance loss. However, I am having a lot of trouble finding a solid method for OS duplication?! Is this even possible or must I buy two versions of win7 and somehow install them separately? Any information regarding this would be helpful, thanks! Essentially I want, Two instances of win7 (not necessarily simultaneously running) Each are isolated from one another so that a security breach in one doesn't affect the other. Here's the sequence of steps that leads to the problem: Install Windows (e.g., XP), naming the system XXX Install DB2 and create some databases Rename the system from XXX to YYY (via the System control panel's Computer Name tab Reboot and find DB2 unable to start How can I get DB2 up and running again without having to reinstall it and without having to rename the system back to XXX? I did find a blog post that hints at some registry values to tweak, but I'm hoping the SF community can come up with a solution in which I can have more confidence.

• How to exchange the HDD of a MacBook Pro?

  I've bought an Solid State Drive (SSD) for my MacBook Pro, and now I need to exchange it somehow. Would this strategy work? 1) Create an backup with Time Machine (Snow Leopard) 2) Then replace the old HDD 3) Insert the new HDD 4) Install Snow Leopard (same version as previously used) 5) Open up Time Machine, and recover from the last backup I'm not sure about how to do the last part.   Hi I need to style a regular html list like the following picture: as you see each each list item has a padding on the sides and a top&bottom border. When hovered the border has a width of 100% of the <ul> item. • Cross Browser Issue

  My background is in WinForms programming and I'm trying to branch out a bit. I'm finding cross-browser issues a frustrating barrier in general, but have a specific one that I just can't seem to work through. I want to display an image and place a semi-transparent bar across the top and bottom. This isn't my ultimate goal, of course, but it demonstrates the problem I'm having ina a relatively short code fragment so let's go with it. The sample code below displays as intended in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. In IE8, the bar at the bottom doesn't appear at all. I've researched it for hours but just can't seem to come up with the solution. I'm sure this is some dumb rookie mistake, but gotta start somewhere.
