  • Booting Windows off new SSD from grub boots old Windows instead

    After a new SSD install, I have: Original Windows 7 on sdc1 (to be retired) Copy of Windows 7 on sdb2 A Windows system partition on sdb1 Ubuntu 12.04 on sda, /boot and ergo grub is on sda1 Grub is MBR on sda and set to boot from BIOS. I prefer to not change this; grub is great! I've run update-grub (the Ubuntu grub scripts are, at present, unaltered) and grub seems to be correctly configured as all options are available: I can boot any of the 3 Windows partitions and Ubuntu. I also ran the repair tool to get Windows to add both installations to BCD. The problem: choosing particular options seem to have no effect; the old version of Windows on sdc1 always boots. I'm stumped! My thought was to only boot Windows off sdb1, and then let BCD do the rest (present a menu to boot between sdb2 and sdc1, but I can't seem to get BCD to boot sdb2), but this has been unsuccessful.   • How to partition my hard drive, quicker?

    When I install Windows 7 on my hard drive, it makes three partitions. One with the OS itself, one with bootmgr inside (that is 100 MiB), and one with the factory image (all the crapware from HP). My final goal is to have the OS on a partition of 100 GiB and keep the rest (900 GiB) for storage. I thought it would be easy using gparted, but it is taking so long. It will take hours. There must a way to partition the drive before installing Windows. Yeah, because what I think makes the shrinking/moving of the partitions take so long is because they are not empty (am I wrong?).

  • Microsoft JScript runtime error: ASPx is undefined

    I'm getting this error all over the place in my web application and trying to figure out why. The error is always for some control, ASPxClientTextBox for example. So far the only thing I've found as a potential fix is to check the httphandlers section of the .net web.config (the one in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\web.config) and make sure an entry for "WebResource.axd" exists, which it does. Any idea's what's going on or where I should look?

    We run Pfsense as our primary firewall. We also have OpenVPN server running on that box to allow us to remotely connect to our network. My question is: if we have a customer's mostly unattended server that we want to access remotely, what security vulnerabilities are there to installing openvpn on the customer's server as a client connecting to our network. Presumably, we would want to limit/restrict that server's access to the rest of our network. How do we lock openvpn down and are there ways to detect abnormal activity coming from an openvpn client?

  • New to Apache: what exacty should my conf file contain for a basic forward proxy?

    Hi, I was hoping to get some help setting up Apache as a forward proxy, primarily just to know how it's done and for learning. I've found countless examples that look a lot like this: <IfModule mod_proxy> ProxyRequests On ProxyVia On <Proxy *> Allow from all </Proxy> But I'm not sure what to do with that information. What happens in the rest of the conf file? Do I just append it to the bottom and activate all the proxy modules? And if so, why isn't working when I try it with Firefox? Thanks

  • Recovering database files from a corrupted VHD

    We have a SQL server hosted on a virtual machine. Our hosting company updated/restarted the server and for some reason the virtual machines became unbootable. We've spoken to Microsoft and used a few higher level tools to attempt to recover the virtual machines but were unsuccessful. In browsing the file system the database folder doesn't even appear. I'm wondering if there are any lower level tools that might be able to find and copy the database files. As far as I know the physical hard drive is ok, so I'm hoping there may be some way to recover the files themselves even if the rest of the virtual machine file-system is a loss. Obviously we're in a bit of a bind, and any help/ suggestions are very much appreciated.

I thought of creating a login bean that creates a jsession for authenticated users and then using AOP to check for the jsession before each controller method inovcation.     Hi there, I have a database with products organized by categories and subcategories. The thing is that I generate a menu by querying the categories table. Because categories are almost the same(they can change/add once a month or something), I don't think I have to query the database for each access of the web-page. Do you have a better idea for me?   • AppFabric named cache, what happens if you lose a cache host?

    I'm getting my head around how app fabric clustering works and there's something I'm not sure about. Given a structure where we have one named cache, with two lead hosts and (say) three cache hosts and high availability turned off and the lead host(s) performing the management role. When one cache host goes down do you loose the data that was on that cache host? In this MSDN article it states: Data on the non-lead hosts would be lost (assuming high availability was not enabled), but the rest of the cluster could continue serving and storing data But I was unsure if redundancy is built into the system. Would you loose x amount of data or would one of the other cache hosts store this data also and pick up the slack?

  • Best solution for a windows service with constant running threads in C# 4.0

    Hi, I want to create a windows service that will create x number of threads that wake up every x number of minutes and do some work. I think the task scheduling or parallel framework is a bad fit for this type of work as it is best suited for work that starts, completes and finishes rather than is constant. Should I look at utilising a thread pool for this approach or does anyone have any advice for a good solution? Thanks Paul

  • How do you pick what server setup you need?

    I recently started receiving pubsub data feed from etsy. It averages around 250 notifications per minute. But obviously, when the USA wakes up that spikes quite heavily. I want to be able to deal with those spikes (about 3 per day) but the rest of day is fine. What's the best method of getting the right server configuration. My current approach is to keep upgrading until the server stops dying... next leap is: Processor: AMD Phenom II X6-1055T HEXA Core RAM: 4GB DDR2 SDRAM HD1: SATA Drive (7,200 rpm) (+500 GB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive) HD2: SATA Backup Drive (+500 GB SATA (7,200 rpm)) OS: Linux OS (+CentOS 5 64-bit) Bandwidth: 6000GB Monthly Transfer (3000 in + 3000 out) (+100M uplink port) What's the best approach to working out what sort of server setup you need?

  • Visual Studio 2010 : Cant change target. Gives TargetFrameworkMoniker Error.

    I have a console application which has target .NET 2.0 It is very short but full of unsafe code. I converted it to VS 2010. I run it OK. When I try to change "target framework" in properties to 3.5 or 4.0 it shows message box: TargetFrameworkMoniker: Error parsing application configuration file at line 0. XML document must have a top level element. the target then stays 2.0 anyway... Any thoughts?
