  I am looking people's opinion and experience on using chart controls within an ASP.NET application (web forms or MVC) primarily but also in any kind of project. I am currently doing my research and I have a pretty big list of controls to evaluate. What I am looking is opinions on using any of the above so I can form my own and help others do the same, based on what I read here. I do not care which one is better. What I care for is why someone likes one of the above and what do these controls offer as a distinct advantage. I am interested in developer's opinion and I would like to find out which things are difficult doing with any of the above controls and which things are easy to achieve. AJAX compatibility (build in to the controls but also manual), ASP.NET compatibility, input capabilities, data binding options, performance, how much code does one need to write in order to create a chart, are some of the things that I would want to read about. I have already done my research on StackOverflow for relevant questions but there is nothing on the level of detail that I would want to read in order to make a responsible decision.

• Codeigniter + TankAuth + Swfupload not able to get the logger user id

  Hello. I am using Codeigniter with the TankAuth library installed and trying to upload to index.php/reuqests/doUpload from swfupload but can't access the page as authenticated. I have read many posts around the net about similar problem and tried to set $config['sess_match_useragent'] = FALSE; but still no difference. I have ended up skipping the login check in my controller for testing purposes. But now I need to access tankAuth library from my controller to get the current logged in user ID. It is requested in my application and cannot skip it, I really need to pass the logged in user id to that doUpload model. I have setup controller like this: function doUploadFileFn() { if (!$this->tank_auth->is_logged_in()) { return; } else { $user_id = $this->tank_auth->get_user_id(); $this->load->model('requests/doUploadFile'); $this->doUploadFile->uploadData($user_id); } } Now, it does not pass the is_logged_in() check, as I learned from other posts, CI deletes the session but I have setup the config not to match the user agent but still not working. Is there any solution to this out there ? Thank you.

• NHibernate query with Projections.Cast to DateTime

  I'm experimenting with using a string for storing different kind of data types in a database. When I do queries I need to cast the strings to the right type in the query itself. I'm using .Net with NHibernate, and was glad to learn that there exists functionality for this. Consider the simple class: public class Foo { public string Text { get; set; } } I successfully use Projections.Cast to cast to numeric values, e.g. the following query correctly returns all Foos with an interger stored as int - between 1-10. var result = Session.CreateCriteria<Foo>() .Add(Restrictions.Between(Projections.Cast(NHibernateUtil.Int32, Projections.Property("Text")), 1, 10)) .List<Foo>(); Now if I try using this for DateTime I'm not able to make it work no matter what I try. Is there any solution for this issue? or other reason to make it happened?

• Why use short-circuit code?

(Logic & Assignment operators) There are questions about the benefits of a language using short-circuit code, but I'm wondering what are the benefits for a programmer? Is it just that it can make code a little more concise? Or are there performance reasons? I'm not asking about situations where two entities need to be evaluated anyway, for example: if($user->auth() AND $model->valid()){ $model->save(); } To me the reasoning there is clear - since both need to be true, you can skip the more costly model validation if the user can't save the data. This also has a (to me) obvious purpose: if(is_string($userid) AND strlen($userid) > 10){ //do something }; Because it wouldn't be wise to call strlen() with a non-string value. What I'm wondering about is the use of short-circuit code when it doesn't effect any other statements. For example, from the Zend Application default index page: defined('APPLICATION_PATH') || define('APPLICATION_PATH', realpath(dirname(__FILE__) . '/../application')); This could have been: if(!defined('APPLICATION_PATH')){ define('APPLICATION_PATH', realpath(dirname(__FILE__) . '/../application')); } Or even as a single statement: if(!defined('APPLICATION_PATH')) define('APPLICATION_PATH', realpath(dirname(__FILE__) . '/../application')); So why use the short-circuit code? Just for the 'coolness' factor of using logic operators in place of control structures? To consolidate nested if statements? Because it's faster?

  Hello, I recently started using the new Hibernate (EntityManager) 3.5.1 with JPA 2.0, and I was wondering if it was possible to both retrieve a (sub-set) of entities and their count from a single CriteriaQuery instance. • Status of VB6/ Best Desktop Application Language with Native Compliation

  Hi, I was looking for a Desktop Application Programming Language with one of the biggest constraint: - “ I need to output as native executable”. I explored multiple options: a) Java is not a very good option for desktop programming, but still you can use it. But Java to Exe is a problem. [Only GCJ and Excelsior-Jet provides this][1]. b) .Net platform does not support native compilation. Only very few expensive tools are available which can do the job. c) Python is not an option for native compilation. Right? d) VB6 is the option I am left with. From the above list, if I am correct, VB6 is the only and probably the best option I have. But VB6 itself has issues like: a) It is no more under development since 2003. b) There are questions on support of VB6 IDE with Vista. Thus my questions are: a) From the list of programming language options, do you want to add any more? b) If VB6 is good/best option, looking at its development status, would you suggest using VB6 in this era? • Cannot add SourceSafe Database as Visual Studio 2010 source control.

  My issue is that I cannot add SourceSafe Database for source control within Visual Studio 2010. Our team was initially using VSS for source control in Visual Studio 2010. During an evaluation of TFS, I switched my source control to TFS. It will be a few weeks before a decision is made on TFS, so I needed to switch my source control back to VSS. However I'm now unable to add a SourceSafe Database in Visual Studio. Steps to Reproduce in Visual Studio 2010: 1) Access the 'Open SourceSafe Database' form via Tools-Options-Source Control-Plug-in Settings--Advanced or via File-Source Control 2) The list of available database is blank so I choose 'Browse'. 3) I browse to the srcsafe.ini file for my VSS database and select it. 4) I'm promted to confirm the Database Name - Click OK. 5) The database does not appear in the 'Open SourceSafe' Database form. The list of available databases is still blank. Note that I can add the database fine outside of Visual Studio using VSS directly. However the databases I add via VSS do not appear in the Visual Studio forms. I'm suspicious that this is related to "down-grading" from TFS to VSS which may not have been heavily tested at MS. Any assistance is appreciated.

• Flex, Ant, mxmlc and conditional compilation

  My ActionScript project builds with several compile-time specified constants. They are all Booleans, and only one of them is true at any given time. The rest must be false. When I represented my build process in a bash script, I could loop through the names of all these constants, set one of them to be true and the rest to be false, then concatenate them onto a string to be inserted as a set of arguments passed to mxmlc. In Ant, looping is more complicated. I've tried the ant-contrib for tag: <mxmlc file='blah' output='blah'> <!- ... -> <for list='${commaSeparatedListOfConstNames}' param='constName'> <sequential> <define> <name>${constName}</name> <value>${constName} == ${theTrueConst}</value> <!-- (mxmlc's define arguments can be strings that are evaluated at compile time) --> </define> </sequential> </for> </mxmlc> Long story short, ant-contrib tags like the for tag can't go in the mxmlc task. So now I'm using Ant's propertyregex to take my list of arguments and format them into a set of define args, like my old bash script: <propertyregex property='defLine.first' override='false' input='${commaSeparatedListOfConstNames}' regexp='([^\|]+)\,' replace='\1,false ' /> <propertyregex property='defLine.final' input='${defLine.first}' regexp='(@{theTrueConst}\,)false' replace='\1true' /> <!-- result: -define+=CONST_ONE,false -define+=CONST_TWO,false -define+=TRUE_CONST,true --> Now my problem is, what can I do with this mxmlc argument and the mxmlc task? Apparently arg tags can go inside the mxmlc task without it throwing an error, but they don't seem to have any effect. What am I supposed to do? How do I make this work with the mxmlc task?

• JSF ui:repeat and f:ajax giving wrong value for h:inputText after rerender.

  I have a list of questions and I can display them ok using a ui:repeat, but after clicking the Edit button the rerendered inputText is given the wrong question.id. • Getting past dates in HP-UX with ksh

  Ok, so I need to translate a script from a nice linux & bash configuration to ksh in hp-ux. Each and every command expects a different syntax and i want to kill myself. But let's skip the rant. This is part of my script anterior=`date +"%Y%0m" -d '1 month ago'` I basically need to get a past date in format 201002. Never mind the thing that, in the new environment, %0m means "no zeroes", while actually in the other one it means "yes, please put that zero on my string". It doesn't even accept the "1 month ago". I've read the man date for HP-UX and it seems you just can't do date arithmetic with it. I've been looking around for a while but all i find are lengthy solutions. I can't quite understand that such a typical administrative task like adding dates needs so much fuss. Isn't there a way to convert my one-liner to, well, i don't know, another one? Come on, i've seen proposed solutions that used bc, had thirty plus lines and magic number all over the script. The simplest solutions seem to use perl... but i don't know how to modify them, as they're quite arcane. Thanks!

• GNU Make: How to call $(wildcard) within $(eval)

  I'm trying to create a generic build template for my Makefiles, kind of like they discuss in the eval documentation. I can't seem to get the wildcard function to work within an eval. The basic code I'm having issues with looks like this. SRC_DIR = ./src/ PROG_NAME = test define PROGRAM_template $(1)_SRC_DIR = $(join $(SRC_DIR), $(1)/) $(1)_SRC_FILES = $(wildcard $$($(1)_SRC_DIR)*.c) endef $(eval $(call PROGRAM_template, $(PROG_NAME))) all: @echo $(test_SRC_DIR) @echo $(test_SRC_FILES) @echo $(wildcard $(wildcard $(test_SRC_DIR)*.c) When I run make with this, the output is ./src/test [correct list of all .c files in ./src/test/] Basically, the wildcard call within PROGRAM_template is not being eval'd as I expect it. The call results in an empty list. The join call is being eval'd correctly though. So, what am I doing wrong? My guess is that $$($(1)_SRC_DIR) is not correct, but I can't figure out the right way to do it. EDIT Once this was solved, it didn't take long for me to hit another issue with eval.   The steps are as simple as that so I imagine there's something else going on here, the problem is I just get back 4004, no exception anywhere etc, making it annoying to debug, I get this from the ie error window Microsoft JScript runtime error: Unhandled Error in Silverlight Application Code: 4004 Category: ManagedRuntimeError Message: System.Windows.Ria.DomainOperationException: Submit operation failed. An error occurred while updating the entries.   I'm trying to make Cakephp paginate take advantage of the SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS feature in mysql to return a count of total rows while using LIMIT. Hopefully, this can eliminate the double query of paginateCount(), then paginate(). http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/information-functions.html#function_found-rows I've put this in my app_model.php, and it basically works, but it could be done better.   Hello! Im usign a Ribbon Window and in the "content area beneath" I have a grid in which I will be displaying UserControls. To demonstrate my problem lets take a look at this simple UserControl: <ListView x:Name="lvPersonList"> <ListView.View> <GridView> <GridViewColumn Width="120" Header="Name" DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Name}"/> <GridViewColumn Width="120" Header="Height" DisplayMemberBinding="{Binding Height}"/> </GridView> </ListView.View> </ListView> And the code: public partial class MyUserControl: UserControl { private List<Person> personList; public TestSnpList() { InitializeComponent(); this.personList = new List<Person>(); this.personList.Add(new Person { Name = "Chuck Norris", Height = 210 }); this.personList.Add(new Person { Name = "John Rambo", Height = 200 }); this.lvPersonList.ItemsSource = personList; } } public class Person { public string Name { get; set; } public int Height { get; set; } } The parent Window: <Grid x:Name="grdContent" DockPanel.Dock="Top"> <controls:MyUserControl x:Name="myUserControl" Visibility="Visible"/> </Grid> I don't understant why this binding doesn't work. I have checked using alert(document.getElementById('datepicker_start').value) that the values in the date inputs are passed correctly when the reload event is triggered. Any ideas why the data doesn't update? A caching or browser issue perhaps?

• How to arrange models, views, controllers in a new Kohana 3 project

  I'm looking at how to set up a mid-sized web application with Kohana 3. I have implemented MVC patterns in the past but never worked against a "formalized" MVC framework so I'm still getting my head around the terminology - toying around with basic examples, building views and templates, and so on. I'm progressing fairly well but I want to set up a real-world web project (one of my own that I've been planning for quite some time now) as a learning object. Example-based documentation is a bit sparse for Kohana 3 right now - they say so themselves on the site. While I'm not worried about learning the framework soon enough, I'm a bit at a loss on how to arrange a healthy code base from the start - i.e. how to split up controllers, how to name them, and how to separate the functionality into the appropriate models. My application could, in its core, be described as a business directory with a main businesses table. Businesses can be listed by category and by street name. Each business has a detail page. Business owners can log in and edit their business's entry. Businesses can post offers into an offers table. I know this is pretty vague, I'll be more than happy to go into more detail on request. Supposing I have all the basic functionality worked out and in place already - list all businesses, edit business, list businesses by street name, create offer, and so on, and I'm just looking for how to fit the functionality into a Kohana application structure that can be easily extended: Do you know real-life, publicly accessible examples of applications built on Kohana 3 where I could take a peek how they do it? Are there conventions or best practices on how to structure an extendable login area for end users in a Kohana project that is not only able to handle a business directory page, but further products on separate pages as well? Do you know application structuring HOWTOs or best practices for Kohana 3 not mentioned in the user guide and the inofficial Wiki? Have you built something similar and could give me some recommendations?

• Pass WPF UserControl reference to another UserControl

  I've created two UserControls, a ValidationManager and a ValidationOutput. On a given form there is one ValidationManager and several ValidationOutput controls, one for each control that is validated. The ValidationManager is given a list of validation errors when the form is submitted, I want each ValidationOutput control to look at this list and see if there are any errors relevant to them. The code looks a bit like this: <r:ValidationManager x:Name="myValidationManager" /> ... <TextBox Name="SomeField" /> <r:ValidationOutput FieldName="SomeField" /> I need to pass a reference to the ValidationManager to each of the ValidationOutput controls. I've added a ValidationManager property to the ValidationOutput UserControl but don't know how to pass the reference to the control. I've tried the following but am just clutching at straws: <r:ValidationOutput ValidationManager="myValidationManager" /> ...and... <r:ValidationOutput ValidationManager="{Binding myValidationManager}" /> The first results in an error "Property 'ValidationManager' was not found or is not serializable for type 'ValidationOutput'" and the second "A 'Binding' cannot be set on the 'ValidationManager' property of type 'ValidationControl'. A 'Binding' can only be set on a DependencyProperty of a DependencyObject."

  I have 4 divs with content like below: <div class="prodNav-Info-Panel">content</div> <div class="prodNav-Usage-Panel">content</div> <div class="prodNav-Guarantee-Panel">content</div> <div class="prodNav-FAQ-Panel">content</div> And a navigation list like this: <div id="nav"> <ul id="navigation"> <li><a class="prodNav-Info" ></a></li> <li><a class="prodNav-Usage" ></a></li> <li><a class="prodNav-Guarantee"></a></li> <li><a class="prodNav-FAQ" ></a></li> </ul> </div> When the page is first displayed I show all the content by executing this: $('div.prodNav-Usage-Panel').fadeIn('slow'); $('div.prodNav-Guarantee-Panel').fadeIn('slow'); $('div.prodNav-FAQ-Panel').fadeIn('slow'); $('div.prodNav-Info-Panel').fadeIn('slow'); Now, when you click the navigation list item it reveals the clicked content and hides the others, like this: $('.prodNav-Info').click( function() { $('div.prodNav-Info-Panel').fadeIn('slow'); $('div.prodNav-Usage-Panel').fadeOut('slow'); $('div.prodNav-Guarantee-Panel').fadeOut('slow'); $('div.prodNav-FAQ-Panel').fadeOut('slow'); }); So what I have is 4 separate functions because I do not know which content is currently displayed. I know this is inefficient and can be done with a couple of lines of code. It seems like there is a way of saying: when this is clicked, hide the rest.
