  • SQL 2000 (MSDE) Hangs When It Receives an Erroneous Query from a Classic ASP Web Application

    I have a SQL interface page in my classic ASP web app that allows admin users to run queries against the app's database (MSDE 2000) - it simply consists of a textarea that the user submits and the app returns the resulting list of records as below Dim oRS Set oRS = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset") oRS.ActiveConnection = sConnectionString // run the query - this is for the admin only so doesnt check for sql safe commands etc. oRS.Open Request.Form("txtSQL") If Not oRS.EOF Then // list the field names from the recordset For i = 0 to oRS.Fields.Count - 1 Response.Write oRS.Fields(i).name & "&nbsp;" Next // show the data for each record in the recordset While Not oRS.EOF For i = 0 to oRS.Fields.Count - 1 Response.Write oRS.Fields(i).value & "&nbsp;" Next Response.Write "<br />" oRS.Movenext() Wend End If The problem with this is that if you send it an invalid query (with a spelling mistake, invalid join etc.) instead of throwing back an error immediately, it hangs IIS (you can see this by trying to browse the app from another computer, it fails) for a number of minutes and THEN returns the error. I have NO idea why! Can anyone help?

    Hi, I created an application which has a menu where it's items are created dynamicly. I use session variables to set my current language. however if I click on the menu to change the session variable: public void LanguageMenu_MenuItemClick(Object sender, MenuEventArgs e) { Session["language"] = e.Item.Text; } The page reloads with the following code: sportsPath = String.Format(@"{0}{1}\Sports\", xmlPath, Session["language"]); //create LeftNavigation string[] sports = Directory.GetFiles(sportsPath); LeftNavigation.Items.Clear(); foreach (string sport in sports) { string text = sport.Replace(sportsPath, "").Replace(".xml", ""); MenuItem item = new MenuItem(); item.Text = text; LeftNavigation.Items.Add(item); } The thing is the content doesn't change, only after I click on something else. If I skip through my code after clicking on the menuItem I can see that it passes the code and it should change, however for some reason the page needs another extra trigger to modify it's content. I also see the page reloading so I don't understand why it's not changing immediatly. I guess I'm not understanding the asp.net logic just quite yet. What am I doing wrong?

    I have an Action Method that I'd either like to return JSON from on one condition or redirect on another condition. I thought that I could do this by returning ActionResult from my method but doing this causes the error "not all code paths return a value" Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?   • Objective C / iPhone comparing 2 CLLocations /GPS coordinates

    have an app that finds your GPS location successfully, but I need to be able to compare that GPS with a list of GPS locations, if both are the same , then you get a bonus. I thought I had it working, but it seems not. I have 'newLocation' as the location where you are, I think the problem is that I need to be able to seperate the long and lat data of newLocation.     Hi, With Shopify I am trying to alter my product template to display a dropdown select list instead of radio buttons for my product variants. I managed to do this but when you try and add a product to the cart from the list it says, "No variant ID was passed."   • Wpf progressbar not updating during method calculation

    Hey guys, In my app, i have an import option, to read info from a .csv or .txt file and write it to a database. To test, i"m just using 200-300 lines of data. At the beginning of the method, i calculate number of objects/lines to be read. Every time an object is written to the database, i want to update my progressbar.     Hi I have problem with using buttons that are placed in the itemtemplate of the listview which is placed in the itemtemplate of the outer listview. I'll try to simplify the code to show only the idea. I have a objects collection which looks like this: Main object contains a list of innerObjects. Every innerObject contains a list of objects that contain some strings. mainObject listItem innerListItem string string innerListItem string string listItem innerListItem string string I set a mainObject as a itemsSource to the ListView. This listView has a ItemTemplate. This ItemTemplate contains some buttons and inner ListView. Inner ListView also has the item template that contains a button (deleteButton). Pressing this deleteButton I want to delete items (innerListItem) for which this button was created. I can use such functionality when I have a sigle listView. private void clearAndList_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { DependencyObject dep = (DependencyObject)e.OriginalSource; while ((dep != null) && !(dep is System.Windows.Controls.ListViewItem)) { dep = VisualTreeHelper.GetParent(dep); } if (dep == null) { return; } ANDconditionsList andList = (ANDconditionsList)ConditionsList.ItemContainerGenerator.ItemFromContainer(dep); orConditionsList.RemoveConditionsSet(andList); } I can't use the same functionality because I can only use the name of the ConditionsList which is the mail listview. The idea is to find the innerlistview and use it instead of ConditionsList, however I don't know if it will work. If anyone have some samples concerning using listview in listview or how to operate the button in a different way please help me

    Hi, I wrote an IHttpModule that compress my respone using gzip (I return a lot of data) in order to reduce response size. It is working great as long as the web service doesn't throws an exception. In case exception is thrown, the exception gzipped but the Content-encoding header is disappear and the client doesn't know to read the exception. How can I solve this? Why the header is missing? I need to get the exception in the client.   • Maven: compile aspectj project containing Java 1.6 source

    What I want to do is fairly easy. Or so you would think. However, nothing is working properly. Requirement: Using maven, compile Java 1.6 project using AspectJ compiler. Note: Our code cannot compile with javac. That is, it fails compilation if aspects are not woven in (because we have aspects that soften exceptions). Questions (based on failed attempts below): Either 1) How do you get maven to run the aspectj:compile goal directly, without ever running compile:compile? 2) How do you specify a custom compilerId that points to your own ajc compiler? Thanks for any and all suggestions. These are the things I've tried that have let to my problem/questions: Attempt 1 (fail): Specify aspectJ as the compiler for the maven-compiler-plugin: org.apache.maven.plugins maven-compiler-plugin 2.2 1.6 1.6 aspectj org.codehaus.plexus plexus-compiler-aspectj 1.8 This fails with the error: org.codehaus.plexus.compiler.CompilerException: The source version was not recognized: 1.6 No matter what version of the plexus compiler I use (1.8, 1.6, 1.3, etc), this doesn't work. I actually read through the source code and found that this compiler does not like source code above Java 1.5. Attempt 2 (fail): Use the aspectJ-maven-plugin attached to the compile and test-compile goals: org.codehaus.mojo aspectj-maven-plugin 1.3 1.6 1.6 compile test-compile This fails when running either: mvn clean test-compile mvn clean compile because it attempts to execute compile:compile before running aspectj:compile. As noted above, our code doesn't compile with javac--the aspects are required. So mvn would need to skip the compile:compile goal altogether and run only aspectj:compile. Attempt 3 (works but unnacceptable): Use the same configuration above but instead run: mvn clean aspectj:compile This works, in that it builds successfully but it's unacceptable in that we need to be able to run the compile goal and the test-compile goal directly (m2eclipse auto-build depends on those goals). Moreover, running it this way would require that we spell out every goal we want along the way (for instance, we need resources distributed and tests to be run and test resources deployed, etc)

  • Is there an extension or a way to write an extension for firefox that allows a developer to refresh

    I'm a developer, and I spend much of my day refreshing the webapps I work on. Occasionally, I'll encounter pages where POST data was submitted, and firefox will prompt me to Resend POST data or to Cancel. Now, I know that I can just redirect a page to itself to get rid of this warning, but I still want to keep this warning for our users; I just want to be able to skip it while developing. It's also not just on one page, but at many different points throughout the app, so it's not like I can just do if $debug==true then redirect or something like that. Basically just a minor convenience issue, but when I encounter the message 50-100 times a day, it can get aggravating. What I want to do is essentially have 3 options when refreshing: Resend POST data, cancel, or refresh without resending POST data The third option would be equivalent to clicking "enter" in the address bar (which is what I end up having to do). The problem with clicking enter is that I often have to "hard refresh" using ctrl+shift+r, but if I do this with POST data I have to click cancel, then click enter on the address bar, then do a hard refresh after that. I would instead like to press ctrl+shift+r, then continue hard refreshing the page without the POST data. Does anyone know how to do this? Through an extension or otherwise? It's totally a minor issue, but it's something that constantly bothers me and I actually think it would be quite a useful option. Thanks

  • To Ajax or Not to Ajax a listing page

    Here i am talking about product listing pages where there are multiple filters that filter the list of products appearing on the page like product types, categories price range etc. I have done such pages using both ajax and no ajax way in the past. What I like about using ajax in such page is that, when filters are selected I only update the section that contains the product list. There is no need to refresh the whole page which could end up re-loading the images on top bar, banners etc and slow down the user performance. Ajax way in my opinion becomes more compact and responsive from user experience. Down side for ajax route for me is; since filter states are not maintained in the URL I end up maintaining them on the server. This becomes complicated if I want to handle multi window scenarios and it is also costly to maintain such state on server memory for each session. Not using ajax and simply keeping all filter values on url and refreshing the page is quite simple but the luxury of refreshing only the pane that really needs to be refreshed is lost. Lately I am seeing a lot of large scale e-commerce sites that are using non-ajax approach on their listing pages and this is making me question one more time if it might be more efficient to build non-ajax listing make due to the long term maintenance ease and sacrifice a little bit from user experience. I am about to start implementing a new listing page for a product which I have the flexibility to go either way and I would appreciate your inputs.

    I need to implement time calculation for repository methods in my asp .net mvc project classes. The problem is that i need to send time calculation data to WCF Service which is time consuming. I think about threads which can help to cal WCF service asynchronously. But I have very little experience with it. Do I need to create new thread each time or I can create a global thread, if so then how? So MSDN is telling me not to use that enumeration (LabelChildOption), which is afaik the only way to create a label and add it to a file. Is there a better way? Is this sort of a "grey" area in the TFS API?

  • Allowed unicode characters in IDN host labels

    Hi all, Im currently working on a "proper" URI validator and currently it all comes down to hostname validation, the rest isnt that tricky. Im stuck at IDN hostname labels (e.g. containing unicode; possible punycode encoded strings have been decoded at this point). My first idea was basicly a regex for TLD's not supporting IDN and one for those who do (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/tld-idn-policy-list.html (?)). Respectively; ^[a-zA-Z0-9-]+$ and ^[a-zA-Z0-9-\p{L}]+$ However this is not an ideal situation, since every IDN registrar can decide which characters to allow and which not. What im looking for is a proper, consistent, up2date data table of unicode characters allowed in various TLD's; im getting this idea i have to find all the data myself at russian and chinese registry sites (which is quite difficult). So before spitting down the web.. i wondered is there such a list? Or are there better approaches, best/common practices etc? (I want the validation to be as strict as possible.) I have a table in MS Sql Server with structure shown below: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[someTable]( [id] [int] NOT NULL, [pname] [nvarchar](20) NULL, [FullName] [nvarchar](50) NULL, [age] [int] NULL) and I there are 2 Ms Sql tables (I've created), sysTables and sysColumns. sysTables: ID sysTableName TableName TableDescription 1 | someTable |Persons |All Data about Persons in system sysColumns: ID TableName sysColumnName ColumnName ColumnDesc ColumnType MUnit 1 |someTable | sometable_pname| Name | Persona Name(ex. John)| nvarchar(20) | null 2 |someTable | sometable_Fullname| Full Name | Persona Name(ex. John Black)| nvarchar(50) | null 3 |someTable | sometable_age| age | Person age| int | null I want that, in Details/Edit/Insert/List/ListDetails pages use as MetaData sysColumns and sysTableData.     Hi I'm using a xslt based dataview webpart the steps i have taken to create a data view webpart is that 1. added a list view webpart on the page 2. Modified the toolbar property to show fulll toolbar 3. open the web page containing above list view webpart in sharepoint desginer and converted it to xslt based webpart (to make further changes in UI) 4. saved the page and previewed in browser in browser web part was throwing the error while i was able to see it properly in desginer witout any error the error maesseged shown in webpart was: ** Unable to display this Web Part.   • Embedding a File Explorer instance in a WinForms app form

    My (C#, .NET 3.5) app generates files and, in addition to raising events that can be caught and reacted to, I want to display the target folder to the user in a form. The file-list is being shown within the same form as other information. I'm using an instance of the WebBrowser control (System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser), then navigating to the folder. This shows some default view of the explorer window, with the file summary panel on the left and the files in the 'Tiles' (large icon and text) view. e.g. wb.Navigate(@"c:\path\to\folder\"); I'd like to suppress the panel and to view the file list in the Details view. The user can get to this via a right-click, context menu, but I'd like it to come up automatically. I'd rather not have to build my own TreeView, DataGridView or whatever; the WebBrowser control does all the updating and re-sorting and whatnot 'for free'. Does anybody have a better suggestion? A different control to use or some additional arguments to pass to the control? And if I could trap events (e.g. files being selected/renamed/double-clicked, etc.) then all the better!

    After spending a miserable month with MySQL/.NET/EntityFramework, my findings: Support for Entity Framework is VERY primitive, please use it for student-subjects type of database. Kindly do not consider it using for serious development as they ARE STILL unable to sort out VERY BASIC things like: it DOES NOT support unsigned stuff it DOES NOT support unsigned columns as FK; if you try, it gives you a beautiful exception; "The specified value is not an instance of a valid constant type\r\nParameter name: value" [http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=44801] blob cannot store more then few KB; cannot compare null object with a column with a LEGAL null value [http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=49936] they are unable to write VERY PRIMITIVE check to return date as null if value in column is 0000-00-00 00:00:00 if you use Visual Studio; sorry; mysql/sun guys hate Microsoft, they will NOT LET you import more then two or three tables (for Micky Mouse type of tables, they allow five; but thats it) - if you try, it will throw TIME OUT error on your face ... unless you are smart enough to change the connection time in connection string Anyone who would like to add in above list? WISH I would have seen a list like this before I selected MySQL :(

  • What makes static initialization functions good, bad, or otherwise?

    Suppose you had code like this: _READERS = None _WRITERS = None def Init(num_readers, reader_params, num_writers, writer_params, ...args...): ...logic... _READERS = new ReaderPool(num_readers, reader_params) _WRITERS = new WriterPool(num_writers, writer_params) ...more logic... class Doer: def __init__(...args...): ... def Read(self, ...args...): c = _READERS.get() try: ...work with conn finally: _READERS.put(c) def Writer(...): ...similar to Read()... To me, this is a bad pattern to follow, some cons: Doers can be created without its preconditions being satisfied The code isn't easily testable because ConnPool can't be directly mocked out. Init has to be called right the first time. If its changed so it can be called multiple times, extra logic has to be added to check if variables are already defined, and lots of NULL values have to be passed around to skip re-initializing. In the event of threads, the above becomes more complicated by adding locking Globals aren't being used to communicate state (which isn't strictly bad, but a code smell) On the other hand, some pros: its very convenient to call Init(5, "user/pass", 2, "user/pass") It simple and "clean" Personally, I think the cons outweigh the pros, that is, testability and assured preconditions outweigh simplicity and convenience.

  • ASP.NET MVC: what mechanic returns ViewModel objects?

    As I understand it, Domain Models are classes that only describe the data (aggregate roots). They are POCOs and do not reference outside libraries (nothing special). View models on the other hand are classes that contain domain model objects as well as all the interface specific objects like SelectList. A ViewModel includes using System.Web.Mvc;. A repository pulls data out of a database and feeds them to us through domain model objects. What mechanic or device creates the view model objects, populating them from a database? Would it be a factory that has database access? Would you bleed the view specific classes like System.Web.Mvc in to the Repository? Something else? For example, if you have a drop down list of cities, you would reference a SelectList object in the root of your View Model object, right next to your DomainModel reference: public class CustomerForm { public CustomerAddress address {get;set;} public SelectList cities {get;set;} } The cities should come from a database and be in the form of a select list object. The hope is that you don't create a special Repository method to extract out just the distinct cities, then create a redundant second SelectList object only so you have the right data types.

  • Suggest a good method with least lookup time complexity

    I have a structure which has 3 identifier fields and one value field. I have a list of these objects. To give an analogy, the identifier fields are like the primary keys to the object. These 3 fields uniquely identify an object. Class { int a1; int a2; int a3; int value; }; I would be having a list of say 1000 object of this datatype. I need to check for specific values of these identity key values by passing values of a1, a2 and a3 to a lookup function which would check if any object with those specific values of a1, a2 and a3 is present and returns that value. What is the most effective way to implement this to achieve a best lookup time? One solution I could think of is to have a 3 dimensional matrix of length say 1000 and populate the value in it. This has a lookup time of O(1). But the disadvantages are. 1. I need to know the length of array. 2. For higher identity fields (say 20), then I will need a 20 dimension matrix which would be an overkill on the memory. For my actual implementation, I have 23 identity fields. Can you suggest a good way to store this data which would give me the best look up time?

  • How to implement DisplayMemberPath for my Wpf UserControl?

    I'm writing a WPF User Control for my application, wrapping a ListBox and a few other items. The ListBox has a new ItemTemplate that presents four pieces of information for each item in my list. I can hard code each of the four bindings to specific properties on my list items and they display fine. However, I want my UserControl to be a bit more flexible. On ListBox and ComboBox there is a property DisplayMemberPath (inherited from ItemsControl) that seems to "inject" the appropriate property binding into the standard ItemTemplate. How do I achieve the same result with my user control? I'd like to set up four new properties to allow configuration of the information displayed: public string LabelDisplayPath { get; set; } public string MetricDisplayPath { get; set; } public string TitleDisplayPath { get; set; } public string SubtitleDisplayPath { get; set; } Reviewing ItemsControl.DisplayMemberPath with Reflector seems to go down the rabbit hole, I haven't been able to fathom how it works. Also, if I'm completely off course - and there's another, more "WPF" technique that I should be using instead, please point me in that direction.
