• Can't access USB drive anymore

• Running dnsmasq as an authoritative DNS server

  I am trying to implement a dynamic dns service for my computers. I have pointed h.lohray.com to my EC2 instance in the NS record of lohray.com and have installed dnsmasq on that system and have made sure to unblock the firewall port. For now, I have statistically added an entry on my /etc/hosts file. 129.118.19.163 i7.h.lohray.com however, i7.h.lohray.com does not resolve correctly with nslookup or dig :-( This is the only time I could have this resolved (online nslookup) - 50.19.103.190 is the IP address of the EC2 instance where dnsmasq is running. Where could I have gone wrong?

• SQL Server iSCSI session issue with a NetApp SAN

  We had an issue early this morning when iSCSI issues broke connectivity with a few of our databases (resulting in a SQL Server Error 21). Attempts to DBCC CheckDB did not work, and the only solution was to restart the SQL Service. Is there a known reason why an iSCSI initiator session would reset itself out of the blue? Example below from the NetApp syslog. This set of errors was replicated 4 times (once for each SQL server in production). Only one SQL server was noticeably impacted, however. • Extremely slow internet-connection?

  Hello Few days ago I opened my computer as I always do after school, and got pretty amazed about my 1.27kb/s download-speed. It has continued for few days already. We have a wireless network, which is used by 3 computers. Normally I've gotten 200kb/s (I think we have a 2mb-connection) but now it just suddenly slowed down. My friends have the same service-provider, but no problem. So, is there any kind of program, which would show me all the programs using connection and how much. It must be a program open which just takes all speed off. Any help is appreciated, Martti Laine

• Can't create a registry key under Eventlog and I am in administrators group

  I am troubleshooting an installer problem where it's giving an error writing to a registry key. So when I use the Registry Editor (regedit) to create the same key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog, I get a "Cannot create key: Error writing to the registry". Looking at the permissions, administrators have full access and I am a member of that group. I can create entries in other areas in the registry. When I try to take ownership, I see my name already listed. But then I get an error "Unable to set new owner on Eventlog. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service". I tried after a new reboot. I turned off my firewall (Comodo). Why can't I create a new key when I am an admin and permissions indicate I have full control?

• hardware leasing vs purchase

  I'm wanting to get a new laptop and desktop. I'm self-employed and so both bits of kit are primarily for business use. I've been looking into leasing both computers as an alternative to purchasing outright. Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm UK based and have found a company called hardsoft which seem to offer a good service. I'm particularly attracted by the upgrade after 18 months option and the fact that the machines are under warranty for the lift of the lease. I'd be really grateful for general thoughts, especially if there are any UK users or hardsoft clients.

• Good Freelance models for web developers

  I am a web developer with four years of experience in PHP, MYSQL and experience in Javascript etc. One day I hope to develop a freelance career in web development. Areas of freelance that I am thinking of going towards includes Wordpress, Magento development along with bespoke applications. I am also thinking of doing some consultancy work for clients and businesses when I build up some more experience and technical knowledge. I want to offer a web development service to potential clients that plays on my strengths in what I know but most importantly has a market. Web development can cover so many subjects that its difficult to pick out the areas that have demand. I am also curious to find out if web developers offer services that bring in a monthly income e.g application maintenance or database maintenance? Is there a market for certain areas like WordPress plugins or bespoke applications? Are there certain things to avoid because of work duration, unrealistic client expectations or the fact that its impossible to find a market for it? As professional and experienced freelance web developers have you learned some important do's and don'ts? Is there certain services that the majority of web developers offer because its in high demand? This is the one area of web development freelancing that I cant get my head around. I know there is never a definitive answer but there must be some good practises and general consensus on this subject. Web designers design websites they offer a lump sum and get paid monthly sometimes to add new content, PPC and SEO consultants market sites to the top this will involve monthly payments, web development doesn’t seem so clear cut.

• Web-based interface is mangled

  Linksys WRT54 - over the last couple days i've been in and out of network configuration screens of my DSL modem and the router (and the commandline for that matter) as I've installed the DynDNS service. (thankx to subsonic and DynDNS.com i'm now able to stream my workstations MP3 catalog over my wife's Droid - making me her tech hero all over again) Somewhere after getting all the net ducks lined up - ports forwarded and firewalls configured - the web-interface for the router ceased rendering the full page - it's only rendering parts, i can F5/refresh and it re-renders and displays some of the cells (table-based webpage) but omits others that _had rendered before the refresh. Happens for both IE and FF. And continues after a reboot. Probably need to re-cycle the router itself but is this known behavior or should i look deeper for a cause? thx

• How can I mitigate DNS Server outages?

  Let's say I have a root domain of "mysite.com". That domain and its sub-domains have DNS served by an external service - let's call them Setwork Nolutions. If this external company is hit with a DDoS attack, my interally-hosted websites under this domain are no longer accessible at "mysite.com" or "*.mysite.com", even though the website(s) is/are fully up and operational. How can I mitigate such a problem so as to keep end users happy? The only solution others at my company have come up with is to create a second domain - i.e. "mysite2.com", and host its DNS at another company, and then communicate to all end users that this is the website they should use. I think this is ridiculous, and just leads to a bunch of other problems. I'd like to find a solution where we can point to the same website with the same URL without the original DNS host being operational. Any thoughts?

• Logrotate Successful, original file goes back to original size

  Has anyone had any issues with logrotate before that causes a log file to get rotated and then go back to the same size it originally was?   Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? Please Note: This is not a subjective question and I am not looking for opinions. This is very much an objective question with legitimate use and purpose to identify hosts that offer the following: Multi Domain SSL Certificate Linux Server PHP5+ cPanel Unlimited Storage, Bandwidth, MySql DBs and Addon Domains SSL is mentioned first because this is most important. This is not a single domain or wildcard SSL cert. It's relatively new and unique. It's for the purpose of securing multiple domains on one account without having to have an entirely separate hosting account and SSL cert for every domain. I'm currently using BlueHost/HostMonster which meets all my criteria except for this special kind of SSL cert. Currently, HostGator is the only host that offers everything I've listed that I've been able to find. Again, I'm not requesting recommendations, advice or opinions of the best or most reputable service based on your experiences. I am asking for an objective list of known hosts that offer the aforementioned listed items only. Thereafter, I (and others who this will benefit) can make our comparisons and selection privately.

  I'm looking for a new WiFi router, and one key feature for me is WOL. Seems like many routers won't do this w/ factory firmware. Given my last router (Asus WL-520g) turned into a disco-brick couple hours after flashed to dd-wrt I'd prefer if the new one supported WOL out-of-the-box. other required features would be: dyndns service support port forwarding sometimes it is called "virtual server" I guess NAT loopback so I can access services running in my own network using dyndns hostname or public IP w/o getting too old (for example DIR-615 with factory firmware lets you wait literally minutes) did I mention WiFi? preferably w/ some range extending technology, if such stuff works at all

• Windows Azure Virtual Machines - Make Sure You Follow the Documentation

  To create a Windows Azure Infrastructure-as-a-Service Virtual Machine you have several options. You can simply select an image from a “Gallery” which includes Windows or Linux operating systems, or even a Windows Server with pre-installed software like SQL Server. One of the advantages to Windows Azure Virtual Machines is that it is stored in a standard Hyper-V format – with the base hard-disk as a VHD. That means you can move a Virtual Machine from on-premises to Windows Azure, and then move it back again. You can even use a simple series of PowerShell scripts to do the move, or automate it with other methods. And this then leads to another very interesting option for deploying systems: you can create a server VHD, configure it with the software you want, and then run the “SYSPREP” process on it. SYSPREP is a Windows utility that essentially strips the identity from a system, and when you re-start that system it asks a few details on what you want to call it and so on. By doing this, you can essentially create your own gallery of systems, either for testing, development servers, demo systems and more. Whenever you deploy a system to Windows Azure Virtual Machines, you must meet certain password complexity requirements. However, when you build the machine locally and SYSPREP it, you might not choose a strong password for the account you use to Remote Desktop to the machine. In that case, you might not be able to reach the system after you deploy it. Once again, the key here is reading through the instructions before you start. • Two different domains as one user session

  I have two websites that are run as the same service. Each domain offers articles from a different market. At the top of each page the two domains are shown as menu options. If a user clicks one they can switch to the other domain. See here: http://www.cgtag.com Each domain has a different Google Analytics account, and when a user switches domains Google is counting this as a new session. It's listing the other domain as the "referral" for that new session. When the user switches back to the first domain Google is counting this as a returning visitor. This is messing up my reports. Showing returning visitors values that are higher than reality. It's also increasing hits on landing pages when the user switches, and listing the other domain as a referral site. I've found tips on how to list two domains as one website, but that results in merging the data. I want to keep the two domains separate so that I can track each ones performance, but I don't want to count domain changes as new sessions. Maybe something like treating the two domains as subdomains.

• WCF Communication Problem

  Two separate servers, one is an IIS7 web application trying to connect to a WCF service on the other server. The initial connect always fails, sometimes the second, after that, everything works normal. What could be the cause of this problem? The exception that gets thrown is EndpointNotFoundException Could not connect to net.tcp://192.168.0.83/MgrService/Manager.svc. The connection attempt lasted for a time span of 00:00:21.0289348. TCP error code 10060: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 192.168.0.83:808.

• Help in (re)designing my Swing application

  I have developed a Swing application that controls execution of several script like jobs. I need to display the interim output of the jobs concurrently. I have followed MVC while writing the application. The application is working as expected. But off late I have the following requirements in hand: A few of the script jobs need special user privileges to execute so as to access specialized resources. There seems to be now way in Java to impersonate as a different user while running an application.[examined in this question]. Also trying to run the Swing application as a scheduled task in windows is not helping. Once started the jobs should be running even if the user logs off after starting the jobs. I am thinking of separating the execution logic from the UI and run that as a service; and introduce JMS in between the two layers so as to store/retrieve the interim the output. Note: I need to run this application on windows Any ideas on meeting my requirements will be highly appreciated.

• "Automatically Connect" option for Mobile Broadband crashes GNOME Shell, how to remove network configurations?

  I'm using Fedora 15, in GNOME Shell, my mobile broadband connection was working absolutely fine, until I set the connection type to Connect Automatically using nm-connection-manager. Now, when I start the Fedora, the Top panel network icon shows red exclamation symbol and when I click it, instead of showing me available networks' list, it shows only "Network Settings", and when I open it, it shows GNOME 3's new Network Manager app, and it pops out the dialog saying that, "Current network settings service is incompatible with this version". And after a few seconds of log in, the shell freezes and all I can do is log out using Ctrl+Alt+BackSpace. I'm facing this problem since I opened old network manager app using nm-connection-manager in the run dialog, and editing my connection to connect automatically. After logging in to the shell I somehow managed to delete that connection from the same app and created a new one, but the problem still exists. How can I delete all network preferences (by deleting its configuration files from my home directory or something like that) and reset the GNOME 3's network manager to its default state?

  I wanted to officially thank the organizers, speakers, volunteers and the attendees of SharePoint Saturday South Florida. Being the first event in South Florida the reception was phenomenon and the group of speakers from keynote by Joel Oleson to session’s speakers from well renowned speakers like John Holliday, Randy Disgrill, Richard Harbridge, Ameet Phadnis, Fabian Williams, Chris McNulty, Jaime Velez to organizers like Michael Hinckley amongst others. With my Business Intelligence (BI) presentation being on the last track of the day, I spent very quality time networking with these great guys and getting the insider scope on International SharePoint Community from Joel and his son which was mesmerizing.
