• Apache internal test servers

  I want to build a test system in the office. On one box I will install XAMPP. I will put a website that I want to test on that box. Now I do not want it connected to the Internet. So my plan is to use a reverse proxy to resolve things like ads and other external links. So I am thinking of using mod_proxy for that. Now my question is, How many boxes do I need? 1 for Xampp, 1 for mod_proxy and 1 for the server where mod proxy redirects them to. Total of three. But maybe I could do it with less. Can I run Mod_proxy on the first box? Is there a better way? Thanks

• Add Properties Back to the Context Menu in Firefox

  Have you noticed that the Properties Command has been removed from the Context Menu in Firefox 3.6? If you have been missing it here is how to get it back. Before With the newest version of Firefox you may have noticed a very useful command missing from the “Context Menu”. Here you can see that when we right clicked on the article link we were unable to “access” the properties for it… Same article and the same problem when trying to “access” the properties for one of the images. After Once you have installed the extension you can once again “access” the properties for those links… And those images… Looking very good… Conclusion If you have been frustrated with the removal of the “Properties Command” from the “Context Menu” in Firefox 3.6, you can now add it back in just a few moments. • Dual Nic, one keeps dropping

  I'm running windows server 2008 r2 on a dell poweredge 2850. I have 2 NICs, one is configured behind a firewall with a dhcp server on the main local LAN and another one has it's own dedicated connection to one of our 13 static IPs. So in a nutshell we have 2 of our static IPs going to this server, one indirectly through a firewall/dhcp server, and the other directly. I am trying to reach IIS on port 80 and port 443. The problem is that the NIC with the direct connection (NIC2) keeps dropping and says either "No internet connection" or "Unauthenticated". However, the NIC behind the firewall (NIC1) has no problems at all. Update: This is the second time this has happened in 3 days and each time the fix has been enabling the dhcp client on the NIC, allowing it to error out to a 169.x.x.x address, then re-enabling the nic with it's static IP assignment.

• localhost/phpmyadmin pulls blank page

• Kickstart installation: Unable to read package metadata

  I'm trying to install a CentOS OS with kickstart using HTTP as the installation source. The kickstart server and the installed server are both running on VMs on the same machine. after the anaconda system installer starts it fails with the following message: I tried installing two different versions of Centos(5.5 and 5.2), and they both pass a CDROM media test the manual installation provides. • Reverse proxy with SSL and IP passthrough?

  Turns out that the IP of a much-needed new website is blocked from inside our organization's network for reasons that will take weeks to fix. In the meantime, could we set up a reverse proxy on an Internet-based server which will forward SSL traffic and perhaps client IPs to the external site? Load will be light. No need to terminate SSL on the proxy. We may be able to poison DNS so original URL can work. How do I learn if I need URL rewriting? Squid/apache/nginx/something else? Setup would be fastest on Win 2000, but other OSes are OK if that would help. Simple and quick are good since it's a temporary solution. Thanks for your thoughts!

• Connecting to a remote server through OpenVPN when local network subnet conflicts with remote network's subnet

  After connecting to a remote location via OpenVPN, I am trying to access a server on a network that exists on a subnet such as 10.0.1.0/24. However, the network I am trying to access this remote server from is on the same subnet: 10.0.1.0/24. I am unable to connect to my remote server via typing in its IP because of this conflict. I am unable to even access the public internet while connected to the VPN. Does anyone know how to mitigate this issue? I have access to the OpenVPN Access Server.

• Cisco 877 as a VPN server?

  I have a Cisco 877 router which connects my network to the Internet using an ADSL line, a single public IP address and NAT; the IOS version is 15. Everything is working ok, but I'd like to configure this router to be a VPN server, to be able to connect to the network from the outside. I've tried looking for documentation, but everything I can find is related to having the 877 act as a VPN client, or to site-to-site VPNs; I can't find anything about letting single remote computers access the internal network, which is something I can do quite easily using Windows' RRAS or ISA Server. Can the Cisco 877 act as a VPN server for remote client computers? (Looks like it should, but just to be sure...) Which type of VPNs does it support? Do they require some special software on the client machines, or can they be used by standard out-of-the-box Windows computers? And, finally: how to set up this?

• Why would Firefox not be able to visit Google anymore?

  Lately I've noticed that my Firefox Browser was taking a long time when I would search Google, e.g. 3 seconds before I would see any results. If I search for a three-word phrase, it just hangs trying to connect: I removed all add-ons but it still does this. I thought it might be something with my router, but Chrome, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer all work fine. Bing works fine in Firefox. Here's my Firefox version information: Otherwise I can still use Firefox, e.g. I'm using it to post this question, but I do notice that when I browse with it, images are often "broken" for a split second before they appear, as if it is having a hard time pulling them from a remote server. Other browsers don't do this. What could be causing Firefox to hang when searching Google?

• bradford persistent agent login not coming up.

  Wired connection. Desktop. It downloads and installs fine but at the point where the login is supposed to pop up. Nothing happens. Bradford says I have normal network access and it never shows it scanning. It just installs and does nothing. I have all of the updates and everything Bradford needs.   I am trying to set up a home network. I live in a location without cable internet so I have a Verizon MiFi card. I have a few laptops at the moment and they each connect through the card but I want to set up an Ubuntu 10.10 server and see if I can use it for DHCP. I have a Trendnet TEG-S50G switch and the computer I plan to use for the server has a Linksys WMP-11 Wireless PCI card. Is there any other equipment I need in order to get this to work? Is this even doable? Is there a better way to make this happen?

  I have a Juniper EX3300 switch in a data center. And I have connected one of the uplink ports (ge-0/1/0) to my ISP's router. I want to configure it so that all the devices connected to ports in the same VLAN as ge-0/1/0 can access the Internet. I have done some research, and I haven't gotten anywhere really. I have configured the interface as follows: ge-0/1/0 { ether-options { no-auto-negotiation; link-mode full-duplex; speed { 1g; } } unit 0 { family inet { address xx.xx.xx.xx/32; } } } where xx.xx.xx.xx is the "Customer Router Port IP" assigned by my ISP. • iPhone 3G S sync services problem

  When I try and synchronise my iPhone with iTunes, I get a dialog informing me that "syncing has been disabled on this computer". (I've never disabled syncing myself, and it worked perfectly fine a day ago) Music synchronises fine, as do videos, however, my contacts do not. Google Contacts no longer appears in the list to choose from, and the select box is empty. When I choose to re-enable syncing, iTunes informs me that "iTunes was unable to load provider data from Sync Services". I've followed several steps I've found on the internet, including deleting the C:\Users\Ryan\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Sync Services directory, but to no avail. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Is there a Service (in the Windows-form-of-daemon sense) that I accidentally disabled?

  At work, I use a laptop. It is a Dell Latitude D630 with Windows XP. I work in a lab environment where I need to use the Ethernet Port as a Static IP to interact with a local network (which cannot talk to the outside world). What I would like to do is use the Wireless as the internet connection so i can check email, etc at the same time I am using the ethernet network... It seems like this is not possible. Is there a piece of software or a way to configure it to allow me to do this?

• IIS 7 503 error, application pool stop crash, defdoc.dll could not be loaded due to a configuration

  Hi All, Currently trying to get iis 7 to work, but every time I request a page, the application pool goes into stopped status. In the event log this is what comes back. The Module DLL 'C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\defdoc.dll' could not be loaded due to a configuration problem. The current configuration only supports loading images built for a x86 processor architecture. The data field contains the error number. I've already re installed iis, any other ideas, I read that someone fixed this by downloading the dll again, but this seems like an odd solution. Thanks. EDIT I have now replaced the file with one I downloaded off the internet, and now it says The Module DLL 'C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\protsup.dll' could not be loaded due to a configuration problem. I hope I don't have to get 100's of these.

• Effects of HTTP/TCP connection handshakes and server performance

  When running apache bench on the same server as the website like: ab -n 1000 -c 10 localhost:8080/ I am most probably not getting accurate results when compared to users hitting the server from various locations. I'm trying to understand how or rather why this will effect real world performance since a user in china will have different latency issues when compared to someone in the same state/country. Say my web server has a maximum thread limit of 100. Can someone explain in detail how end user latency can/will effect server performance. I'm assuming here that each request will be computed equally at say 10ms. What I'm not understand is how external factors can effect overal server performance, specifically internet connections (location, or even device like mobile) and http/tcp handshakes etc.

• What Would Google Do?

  Last year I read Jeff Jarvis' book What Would Google Do? and found it very interesting. Jeff is a long-time journalist that's been studying technology, and more specifically the internet. He used his skills to reverse-engineer Google into a list of "Google rules," then goes on to describe a futuristic world driven by these rules. Its an interesting look at crowd-sourcing, openness, and collaboration across many industries, including retail (Google Shops). This year Jeff Jarvis will be a keynote speaker at CrossTalk, Oracle's user conference dedicated to the retail industry. This year's theme is... Retail Redefined: Redesign. Reinvigorate. Reimagine. I think that's pretty appropriate given the massive changes the industry has undergone during the last three years. The thing I really like about this conference is that we try to let the retailers do most of the talking. I'm very interested in hearing about the innovative projects they've got brewing, and where they think our industry is heading. I'll be speaking, but I'm not sure about what so let me know of any interesting topics.

• Use a Free Tool to Edit, Delete, or Restore the Default Hosts File in Windows

  The hosts file in Windows contains mappings of IP addresses to host names, like an address book for your computer. Your PC uses IP addresses to find websites, so it needs to translate the host names into IP addresses to access websites. When you enter a host name in a browser to visit a website, that host name is looked up in DNS servers to find the IP address. If you enter IP addresses and host names for websites you visit often, these websites will load faster, because the hosts file is loaded into memory when Windows start and overrides DNS server queries, creating a shortcut to the sites. Because the hosts file is checked first, you can also use it to block websites from tracking your activities on the internet, as well as block ads, banners, third-party cookies, and other intrusive elements on webpages. Your computer has its own host address, known as its “localhost” address. The IP address for localhost is 127.0.0.1. To block sites and website elements, you can enter the host name for the unwanted site in the hosts file and associate it with the localhost address. Blocking ads and other undesirable webpage elements, can also speed up the loading of websites. You don’t have to wait for all those items to load. The default hosts file that comes with Windows does not contain any host name/IP address mappings. You can add mappings manually, such as the IP address 74.125.224.72 for www.google.com. As an example of blocking an ad server website, you can enter the following line in your hosts file to block doubleclick.net from serving you ads.   Hi every one, this is just a small hacking attemp to our router. I'm trying to setup a small DNS and forward webpages through proxy behind the scene. I've successfully implement the DNS server that will do the resolving or anything involved in address resolve. But is there anyway I can forward the user using DNS to a proxy instead of request directly to the server? Are there any software/opensource that I can use? I notice on paid wireless, they can provide a login page if user is not login yet, i think this is a way of implementing proxy. Also the hardware is very basic with linksys and netgear router which connect directly to the internet. It's a basic LAN

• Ubuntu can't find the correct max resolution with Samsung SyncMaster SA300

  i decided to install ubuntu also on my desktop PC (Windows has been exorcised from my life) but i am having some problems i didn't have with previous hardware configurations. My display is a Samsung SyncMaster SA300, on windows vista the maximum resolution (1920x1080) worked well, but now, ubuntu (after installing fglrx drivers) tells me that the maximum resolution is 1600x1200 I googled a lot last night, and i found a lot of people solving this (on different displays though) with xrandr. I was not able to do it, because xrandr keep complaining "you goddamn maximum resolution is 1600x1600". But last night, when i tried to select it, my screen went black, and i had to power off the pc. Any clues? am i on the wrong path?
