• CheckPoint VPN-1 SecureClient inability to navigate behind a Linksys WAG300N

  I have a Linksys WAG300N, I'm accessing my LAN with Wifi and everything works fine on my Windows 7 Enterprise laptop. When I try to connect to my company's VPN the connection succeeds, but I cannot access any internet site either within my work network or public site like Yahoo or Google. In my Linksys control panel I already verified all types of VPNs are enable to passthrough. Normal IPSec and Windows VPN worked in the past without any problems. CheckPoint seems to have a solution, but I do not have the ability to change the IP in my client and of course using another NAT device in between is not a solution for me. • Isolating VMware virtual machines from the network

  I have: VMware Workstation 7 running on a Windows 7 box (with a single NIC), with multiple virtual machines running a range of OSs. The host box is connected to a WRT54G router running Tomato firmware. The router is acting as a wireless bridge to another WRT54G that's wired to my broadband modem. I can access the VMs externally via VNC using VMware's Remote Display. Over time I've had these running: a. Using NAT networking (single IP) with port forwarding on the router and a custom port in VMware for each VM. b. Using bridged networking with static IPs assigned to each VM via MAC address, and port forwarding on the router to each IP running with standard ports. Either way, the host box, and other physical machines on the network are accessible from the VMs. Is there a way to isolate the VMs from the rest of the network, but still maintain internet access and remote VNC to the VMs?

  Im setting up a combined website and extranet currently, they both read from the same database on the same server as the site is hosted on. The reason being that the website is fed from the data that the staff plug into the extranet interface. it also links in to AD for authorising access to the extranet. I have the extranet in a folder within the website folder. What I want to do is only allow the extranet to be accessed from computers within our LAN, but allow the main website to be freely accessible to internet users. I have it set up as a generic web server currently, so anyone can view anything (well up to the point where the user is asked to log into the extranet of course! I have read a lot on this but nothing I read applies to, or works in IIS7.5

  Occasionally I am surprised to open up my toolbox and find a great tool that I've had for years and never noticed.  The other day I had just such an experience with Windows Server 2008.  A co-worker of mine was squinting to read to screenshots that he had taken using the "Print Screen, paste" method in WordPad and asked me if there was a better tool available at a reasonable cost.  My first instinct was to take a look at CamStudio for him, but I also knew that he had an immediate need to take some more screenshots, so I decided to check and see if the Snipping Tool found in Windows 7 is also available in Windows Server 2008.  I clicked the Start button and typed “snip” into the search bar and while the Snipping Tool did not come up, a Control Panel item labeled “Record steps to reproduce a problem” did. The application behind the Control Panel entry was “Problem Steps Recorder” (PSR.exe) and I have confirmed that it is available in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 but have not checked other platforms.  It presents a pretty minimal and intuitive interface in providing a “Start Record”, “Stop Record”, and “Add Comment” button.  The “Start Record” button shockingly starts recording and, sure enough, the “Stop Record” button stops recording.  The “Add Comment” button prompts for a comment and for you to highlight the area of the screen to which your comment is related.  Once you’re done recording, the tool outputs an MHT file packaged in a ZIP archive.  This file contains a series of screen shots depicting the user’s interactions and giving timestamps and descriptive text (such as “User left click on “Test” in “My Page – Windows Internet Explorer”) as well as the comments they made along the way and some diagnostics about the applications captured. The Problem Steps Recorder looks like a simple solution to the most common of my needs for documentation that can turn “I can’t understand how to make it do what you’re reporting” to “Oh, I see what you’re talking about and will fix it right away”.  I you’re like me and haven’t yet discovered this tool give it a whirl and see for yourself.

• Wireless Bridge with NetGear and TP-Link

  I have a wireless NetGear WGR614 v7 (little old) router connected to the internet, but I can't get a good signal in the other end of my house. I have another new one, model TP-Link TL-WR941ND wireless router. I was able to do the stuff works using a wired cable, but now, I would like to do the same using wireless connections (bridge mode, some like WDS?) Now, the computer connected to TP LINK was able to ping my computer connected to NETGEAR, but we cannot go IP ADDRESS outside my network, only internals ones. What can I do to configure this? Is needed that BOTH wireless routers support BRIDGE mode or only one its good enough? Thanks a lot!!

  I know this has been asked a few (thousand) times around the internet but I was hoping someone whose in the know might be able to comment on my particular setup. I have a web server hosting one site (php/codeigniter) with a wordpress blog in a sub directory. The server has 2GB RAM, 3GHz CPU and I have offloaded the static assets to CloudFlare which is has reduced bandwidth for the actual server by almost 75%. The problem I have is when an email campaign is sent out that links to the site or blog, it slows down. Below is my settings in apache2.conf. Average apache process size is 80M and there is 1.5GB available for apache. <IfModule mpm_prefork_module> StartServers 8 MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 20 MaxClients 20 MaxRequestsPerChild 2000 </IfModule> I have already setup and installed apc and built some caching into the site and used w3totalcache on the blog. • Is copy paste programming bad ?

  With plain google as well as google code search tools it is easy to find how to program using some resource or solve certain problems ( such as a Java class, or a ftp block in perl etc) and so developers are so tempted to just purely copy paste the code (in a way re-use) - is this an incompetency? I have done this myself though I think I am a better programmer than many others I have seen. Who has the time to RTFM? In this age of information abundance, I do not think that copy paste programming is bad. Isn't that what sites like stackoverflow do anyway? People ask - ok here is my problem - how to solve it? now someone will post complete code and the person who asked the question would simply copy paste the most voted answer. No matter how small the problem is. I am working with a bunch of young coders who heavily rely on internet to get their job done. I see convenience (for example, you may be quite good with algorithms and such but you may not know how to use a BufferedReader in Java - would you read complete Javadoc for BufferedReader or look up some example of using it somewhere??) in copy pasting and modifying code to get the job done. What are the real dangers of copy paste coding that can impact their competency?

• How to set Virtualbox appliance as webdev portable sollution?

  I just want to set a a Virtualbox virtual appliance to make it portable. Meaning that I'll enable a network config which will not need to be changed when I am using my laptop in a different network. I want the virtual machine to have internet access to keep it updated and be able to always have direct access from host using, for example, the IP 10.0.2.100 even when I am in a 192.168.0.1 network. So the first virtual network adapter will have a static ip (10.0.2.100) and the second will receive it from the DHCP. I don't know if 2 virtual adapters are needed or just one to accomplish that.

• How can I expire non-active sessions on my Netscreen SSG140?

  I have a Juniper Netscreen SSG-140. While experimenting with a VoIP service, I defined a custom policy that was to be used to permit the possible ports in use to be sent back to the VoIP server from systems connecting across the internet. Because I'd had problems in the past with VoIP systems getting broken when their UDP sessions were expired out faster than their keep-alives were generated, I set the timeout on this custom service to be 'never'. After much experimentation, I happened to notice that my session count on the firewall has grown from a couple thousand to over 36000. After discussion with the VoIP "expert", I set the timeout to be 30 minutes; however, all the sessions set up during the experimentation process are still there, more than 3 days later. Is there a way I can force these old sessions to get expired and removed from the session table, or am I looking at resetting my firewall? (Both firewalls, actually -- they are in a cluster.)

• New router, old network, but devices won't talk to each other

  I plugged the new router in and get internet on both the computer and the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 only recognizes the computer when I turn the Smart Wall off in my Norton antivirus, and only when the computer is hardwired. How do I make it so that Norton will allow the computer and Xbox to talk? Reset the MAC address? I have no idea how to do this, and I'm starting to think it's the answer to my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• DNS/Apache config to change ServerName on Mac OS X and LAN

  Hi, I want to run an apache web server on a machine running OS X, with the server running on a small intranet LAN with no internet connection. I've set up web sharing and the web server is now accessible from other machines on the LAN using the custom name a.local - but what I would like to do is remove the .local part if possible. Does anyone know how i would go about configuring this in OS X? I wasn't sure if it would be the apache httpd.conf file or some DNS config that would be required.

• Add a Search Box to the Drop-Down Tab List in Firefox

  Do you have a lot of tabs open no matter what time of day it is and find sorting through the tabs list frustrating? Then get control back with the List All Tabs Menu extension for Firefox. Before If you have a large number of tabs open using the “Tab List Menu” can start to become a little awkward. You can use your mouse’s middle button to scroll through the list or the tiny arrow button at the bottom but there needs to be a better way to deal with this. After Once you have installed the extension you will notice two differences in the “Tab List Menu”. There will be a search box available and a nice scrollbar for those really long lists. A closer look at the search box and scrollbar setup… Depending on your style you can use the scrollbar to look for a particular page or enter a search term and watch that list become extremely manageable. A closer look at our much shorter list after conducting a search. Definitely not hard to find what we were looking for at all. Conclusion If you are someone who has lots of tabs open at once throughout the day then the List All Tabs Menu extension might be the perfect tool to help you sort and manage those tabs. • ANTS Memory Profiler 8 released!

  I’m excited to say that we’ve just released ANTS Memory Profiler 8! The big news is support for profiling .NET’s usage of unmanaged memory. There are two main parts to this. Firstly you can see a breakdown of unmanaged memory usage by module. This lets you see at a high level where unmanaged memory is being used – for example in the image below, it’s being used by a PDF generation library. Separately, when looking at a list of .NET classes, you can see how much unmanaged memory those classes are responsible for holding on to. You can also see that information for individual instances of those classes. Some clues you might need this: You’re using system objects or 3rd party components which deal with unmanaged memory under the hood (this includes things like the GDI+ functions used for working with bitmaps) Your application still relies on some legacy Delphi / C++ / etc code from left over from the days before your company moved over to using .NET You’ve used a previous version of ANTS Memory Profiler, and have ever seen a pie chart that looks something like this: You’ll also notice that the startup process has been entirely redesigned, bringing it in line with ANTS Performance Profiler 8, which was released earlier in the year. This makes it faster to start profiling and to run repeat profiling sessions, lets you profile using any browser instead of Internet Explorer, and also provides a host of stability improvements, particularly when launching websites in IIS. • How would I setup reverse DNS for 2 email servers?

  I have an interesting DNS question (well interesting to me atleast). I just installed an hmail server in our remote office to act as an MX backup in the event our exchange server goes down. The 2 host names are mail.campbellsurvey.com mail2.campbellsurvey.com mail points to the address 98.XXX.91.XXX mail2 points to the address 70.XXX.190.XXX How would I setup a PTR record on the ISP end to reflect both hostnames? Does the PTR have to point to EXACTLY mail.campbellsurvey.com or can it point to just campbellsurvey.com? because right now anything passing through the primary static address in our pool (the one used for standard internet) is identified as mail.campbellsurvey.com. My only idea to fix this was to move the mail server to the next available address and give it only it the name mail.campbellsurvey.com but I wanted to see if there was another way. Thanks in advance.
