• Restful authentication between two GAE apps.

- by user259349
Hello everyone, i am trying to write a restful google app engine application (python) that accepts requests only from another GAE that i wrote. I dont like any of the ways that i thought of to get this done, please advice if you know of something better than: Get SSL setup, and simply add the credentials on the request that my consuming app will send. I dont like it cause SSL will slow things down. Security by obsecurity. Add a random number in my request that is in Xmod0, where X is a secret number that both applications know. I just,,,, dont like this. Check the HTTP header to see where is the request coming from. This option is the one that i hate the least, not alot of processing, and spoofing an HTTP request is not really worth it, for my application's data. Is there any other clean solution for this?

• Need Users to Re-authenticate with NTLM

- by Trey Carroll
I'm NTLM (authenication="windows" in the web.config) with an asp.net mvc 2.0 site. Right now once a user logs in it keeps them logged in for weeks at a time. The use of the application is being opened up to users who share computers that use logged in service accounts. I need the site to reprompt each user for their AD credentials each time in order to handle these users. (Activity on the site must be linked to a uniquely identified user.) Thanks for any help that you can provide. Trey Carroll

• Ruby on Rails protect_from_forgery best practice

- by randombits
I'm currently working on building a RESTful web api with ruby on rails. I haven't bothered putting a proper authentication scheme into the API yet as I'm ensuring that tests and the basic behavior of the API is working all locally first. Upon testing non-HTTP GET type requests such as HTTP POST/DELETE/PUT, stuff chokes because protect_from_forgery is on by default. How does this work when I'm working in practice since essentially the idea is in a RESTful API that there is no state. The client does not have a session or a cookie associated with the server. Each request is an atomic, self-executed request. The user will supply some credentials to ensure they are who they say they are, but other than that, does protect_from_forgery make sense at this point? Should it remain enabled?

• log in as a proxy for a certain user

- by Samuel
We have a requirement, wherein the administrative user needs to proxy in as a certain user in an environment where several users (Role: User) are managed by an administrator (Role: Admin). e.g If we have the following users in the database (admin, user1, user2, user3), we would want the admin to proxy as 'user2' and use the system in certain scenarios. Authentication in our web application is based username / password credentials, what mechanisms are available for the admin to proxy as 'user2' when he doesn't have the password for 'user2'. How can the application track such access for audit purposes to mention that 'admin' had proxied for 'user2' and performed certain actions. I am looking for suggestions on supporting this in our j2ee (jboss seam) web application.

• How do you prevent brute force attacks on RESTful data services

- by Adrian Grigore
Hi, I'm about to implement an RESTful API to our website (based on WCF data services, but that probably does not matter). All data offered via this API belongs to certain users of my server, so I need to make sure only those users have access to my resources. For this reason, all requests have to be performed with a login/password combination as part of the request. What's the recommended approach for preventing brute force attacks in this scenario? I was thinking of logging failed requests denied due to wrong credentials and ignoring requests originating from the same IP after a certain threshold of failed requests has been exceeded. Is this the standard approach, or am I a missing something important? Thanks, Adrian

• Do we need to disconnect from sharepoint? If Yes How? ( using Web Services : C#)

- by Pari
Hi, I am using web services to access sharepoint list,sites and documents. Like: List.asmx,Site.asmx e.t.c. My question is that: Do we need to disconnect from sharepoint when using above services? And if yes then How? Example: GetSiteCollection(String login, String password, String url) { Webs ws = new Webs(); try { ws.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(login, password); } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.Message); } ws.Url = url + @"/_vti_bin/webs.asmx"; ws.PreAuthenticate = true; XmlNode websiteNode = ws.GetWebCollection(); XmlNodeList nodes = websiteNode.SelectNodes("*"); // getting list set of sites //Now here after this is there any way to disconnect from server? }

• Backup Google Calendar programmatically: http://www.google.com/reader/subscriptions/export

- by Michael
I'm struggling with writing a python script that automatically grabs the zip fail containing all my google calendars and stores it (as a backup) on my harddisk. I'm using ClientLogin to get an authentication token (and successfully can obtain the token). Unfortunately, i'm unable to retrieve the file at https://www.google.com/calendar/exporticalzip It always asks me for the login credentials again by returning a login page as html (instead of the zip). Here's the critical code: post_data = post_data = urllib.urlencode({ 'auth': token, 'continue': zip_url}) request = urllib2.Request('https://www.google.com/calendar', post_data, header) try: f = urllib2.urlopen(request) result = f.read() except: print "Error" Anyone any ideas or done that before? Or an alternative idea how to backup all my calendars (automatically!)

• Is Transport security a bad practice for the WCF service over the Internet?

- by Sergey
Hello, I have a WCF service accessible over the Internet. It has wsHttpBinding binding and message security mode with username credentials to authenticate clients. The msdn says that we should use message security for the Internet scenarios, because it provides end-to-end security instead of point-to-point security as Transport security has. What if i use transport security for the wcf service over the Internet? Is it a bad practice? Could my data be seen by malicious users? Thanks, Sergey

• Export Plone users to LDAP?

- by Kevin
Hi, I've been tasked with setting up a subversion server next to a Plone instance. The situation is that the Plone instance is already in a "production" state because there are outside users that can access it any moment. I believe setting up a LDAP and binding both, the Plone and subversion instance, to it for authentication is the best solution. So, my question is "how do I export already existing users and respective credentials from a Plone instance to an LDAP install for a seamless transition?" Thanks for any suggestions in advance!

• How to log into a salesforce.com sandbox?

- by wesgarrison
I took over a Rails app and am trying to get the Salesforce.com API credentials set up for my user account. I'm set as a system admin with "Developer Mode" on (though I have no clue what that does, I just saw it set on the previous account.) We have a sandbox. I click the login link on it, enter my sandbox username ([email protected]), enter my password, and get "Login attempt has failed". I know my password is okay since I've logged into the production site several times. Using different domains (test.salesforce.com, etc) doesn't help either.

• How do I use LDAP proxy user authentication from .net?

- by DN
I have a .net web application that uses simple bind to query the LDAP. The application uses integrated windows authentication. Do you have any recommendations on which option to use to authenticate against the LDAP: 1. simple LDAP bind using the logged in user's credentials 2. simple LDAP bind using a service account created for the application's use 3. LDAP proxy user authentication - I dont have enough info about this, so i'd be grateful if someone could explain it's benefit, recommended use and sample .net code to do the query.

• Basecamp API Rails

- by dannymcc
Hi Everyone, I was wondering if someone could do me massive favour.. I really don't understand how to make use of API's - so I was wondering if, using Basecamp as an example, someone could talk me though the basics. So far I have an application with a dashboard controller/view, I have put basecamp.rb into my /lib directory, added the following to my application_controller: def basecamp_connect Basecamp.establish_connection!('XXXXXX.basecamphq.com', 'USER', 'PASS', false) @basecamp = Basecamp.new end Obviously changing the required parts to my credentials. Next up I have added the following to my dashboard_controller: def index Basecamp::TodoList.find(:all) end Next I presume I have to somehow list the Todo's on the dashboard using some sort of loop. Am I doing the right thing, if so - how on earth do I display all the todo items and if not - what am I doing wrong/missing. It doesn't have to be todo's, anything from basecamp or any other popular API service would be a good start. It's just that I happen to have a basecamp account! Thanks, Danny

• Get UPN or email for logged in user in a .NET web application

- by DrStalker
I'm not a .NET developer, and I have a feeling this would be trivial for someone who is: I have a C# web application that makes user of the user credentials of the logged in user. Currently it uses the SID which comes from System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().User.Value I need to get either the users UPN login or email address (as defined in active directory) instead of the SID. GetCurrent() returns an object of type WindowsIdentity; looking in the details for WindowsIdentity Members: MSDN: WindowsIdentity Members I can't see anything that looks like it would give me either the UPN or email in there. How can I pull up that information to use, either by feeding the SID into some other function or calling something different in the first place.

• PHP Retrieve Cookie which was not set with setcookie

- by Martin
I have the following problem - a third party software is setting a cookie with the login credentials and then forward the user to my app. I now need to retrieve the cookie values: The problem is - I can do this easily in the Frontend/AS3 with var ticket : String = CookieUtil.getCookie( 'ticket' ).toString(); but in PHP, the cookie is not within the $_COOKIES array. The cookie values are: Name: ticket Domain: .www.myserver.com Path : / Send for: encrypted connections only Expires: at end of session The one I see, and set before in PHP is: Name: myCookie Host: www.myserver.com Path : / Send for: any type of connection Expires: at end of session Actually, since host/domain are both the same, it should be visible in the PHP script, since it is running on this domain. Any thoughts? Thankx Martin

• System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement not working on the server

- by mlsteeves
I am using System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement to find the logged-in user's AD entry. It is working great in the VS2008 WebDev server on developers machines. But when we installed the code on the development server (windows server 2008), we get an access error. Both the developer's machine and the development server are members of the same domain. We have Impersonation turned on, so we are connecting to AD with the same user credentials. What are we missing here? Why is it working on the developer's machine, but not the development server? The actual exception that we were receiving was "An operations error occurred".

• How do I get the displayname of the logged in user in EWS?

- by tig
Exchange Autodiscovery will give me the user's Display Name via the UserSettingName.UserDisplayName property. However, in cases where autodiscovery fails and connection needs to be done manually I can't figure out how to get the DisplayName. I tried this, but I just get the users' email address: _service = new ExchangeService(); _service.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(exchangeSettings.EmailAddress, exchangeSettings.Password); _service.Url = new Uri(exchangeSettings.ExternalEwsUrl); NameResolutionCollection resolvedNames = _service.ResolveName(exchangeSettings.EmailAddress); exchangeSettings.UserDisplayName = resolvedNames.First().Mailbox.Name; Thanks

• Amazon AWS s3fs mount problem on Fedora 14

- by Alex
I successfully compiled and installed s3fs (http://code.google.com/p/s3fs/) on my Fedora 14 machine. I included the password credentials in /etc/ as specified in the guide. When I run: sudo /usr/bin/s3fs bucket_name /mnt/bucket_name/ it runs successfully. (note: the bucket name is the same as the folder name in /mnt/). When I run ls in /mnt/ I get the error "ls: cannot access bucket_name: Permission denied". When I run sudo chmod 640 /mnt/bucket_name I get "chmod: changing permissions of `bucket_name': Input/output error". When I reboot the machine I can access the folder /mnt/bucket_name normally but it is not mapped to the s3 bucket. So, basically I have two questions. 1) How do I access the folder (/mnt/bucket_name) as usual after I mount it to the s3 bucket and 2) How can I keep it mounted even after machine restart. Regards

• Measuring code coverage for selenium tests that reside in separate project

- by ilu
I have two separate java maven projects: one is my web app itself and other one is tellurium+selenium automation tests for my web(I moved these tests to separate projects as their code doesnt really belong to the web app project code and doesnt use java classes of my web app, also I want to reuse some parts of those tests for testing my other web apps). Therefore, project where my tests reside doesnt know anything about my web app, except tellurium/selenium conf files(host name, credentials, browser). So the question: is there any way to measure code coverage of my webb app backend that is invoked by my tellurium/sellenium tests that reside in separate project? Thanks in advance. Any help is highly appreciated.

• How to add Category in DotClear blog with HttpWebRequest or MetaWeblog API

- by Pitming
I'm trying to create/modify dotclear blogs. For most of the options, i use XmlRpc API (DotClear.MetaWeblog). But didn't find any way to handle categories. So I start to look at the Http packet and try to do "the same as the browser". Here si the method I use to "Http POST" protected HttpStatusCode HttpPost(Uri url_, string data_, bool allowAutoRedirect_) { HttpWebRequest Request; HttpWebResponse Response = null; Stream ResponseStream = null; Request = (System.Net.HttpWebRequest)HttpWebRequest.Create(url_); Request.UserAgent = "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; fr; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)"; Request.Accept = "text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8"; Request.AllowAutoRedirect = allowAutoRedirect_; // Add the network credentials to the request. Request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(Username, Password); string authInfo = Username + ":" + Password; authInfo = Convert.ToBase64String(Encoding.Default.GetBytes(authInfo)); Request.Headers["Authorization"] = "Basic " + authInfo; Request.Method = "POST"; Request.CookieContainer = Cookies; if(ConnectionCookie!=null) Request.CookieContainer.Add(url_, ConnectionCookie); if (dcAdminCookie != null) Request.CookieContainer.Add(url_, dcAdminCookie); Request.PreAuthenticate = true; ASCIIEncoding encoding = new ASCIIEncoding(); string postData = data_; byte[] data = encoding.GetBytes(postData); //Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(data_); //encoding.GetBytes(postData); Request.ContentLength = data.Length; Request.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"; Stream newStream = Request.GetRequestStream(); // Send the data. newStream.Write(data, 0, data.Length); newStream.Close(); try { // get the response from the server. Response = (HttpWebResponse)Request.GetResponse(); if (!allowAutoRedirect_) { foreach (Cookie c in Response.Cookies) { if (c.Name == "dcxd") ConnectionCookie = c; if (c.Name == "dc_admin") dcAdminCookie = c; } Cookies.Add(Response.Cookies); } // Get the response stream. ResponseStream = Response.GetResponseStream(); // Pipes the stream to a higher level stream reader with the required encoding format. StreamReader readStream = new StreamReader(ResponseStream, Encoding.UTF8); string result = readStream.ReadToEnd(); if (Request.RequestUri == Response.ResponseUri) { _log.InfoFormat("{0} ==> {1}({2})", Request.RequestUri, Response.StatusCode, Response.StatusDescription); } else { _log.WarnFormat("RequestUri:{0}\r\nResponseUri:{1}\r\nstatus code:{2} Status descr:{3}", Request.RequestUri, Response.ResponseUri, Response.StatusCode, Response.StatusDescription); } } catch (WebException wex) { Response = wex.Response as HttpWebResponse; if (Response != null) { _log.ErrorFormat("{0} ==> {1}({2})", Request.RequestUri, Response.StatusCode, Response.StatusDescription); } Request.Abort(); } finally { if (Response != null) { // Releases the resources of the response. Response.Close(); } } if(Response !=null) return Response.StatusCode; return HttpStatusCode.Ambiguous; } So the first thing to do is to Authenticate as admin. Here is the code: protected bool HttpAuthenticate() { Uri u = new Uri(this.Url); Uri url = new Uri(string.Format("{0}/admin/auth.php", u.GetLeftPart(UriPartial.Authority))); string data = string.Format("user_id={0}&user_pwd={1}&user_remember=1", Username, Password); var ret = HttpPost(url,data,false); return (ret == HttpStatusCode.OK || ret==HttpStatusCode.Found); } 3.Now that I'm authenticate, i need to get a xd_chek info (that i can find on the page so basically it's a GET on /admin/category.php + Regex("dotclear[.]nonce = '(.*)'")) 4.so I'm authenticate and have the xd_check info. The last thing to do seems to post the next category. But of course it does not work at all... here is the code: string postData = string.Format("cat_title={0}&new_cat_parent={1}&xd_check={2}", category_, 0, xdCheck); HttpPost(url, postData, true); If anyone can help me and explain were is it wrong ? thanks in advance.

• SAML Authentication Portal

- by Alvin Jones
I'd like to develop a portal similar to what a company like OneLogin (http://www.onelogin.com/) has: The user would login with their login credentials then have links to the web resources that their account is associated with. When they see their resources all they need to do is click on them and they'll be automatically login in (SAML authentication). Are there any open source projects out there that have started on this effort? It would be great if there was something that we could use as a base to build on top of with a friendly license (e.g. MIT). Thanks
