• Watch TV/recorded shows from my Comcast cable box on my Mac?

  Hi, all. I've got a MacBook that's about three years old (it's the first generation that had a dual core CPU), running Leopard. I've got a Comcast DVR/HD Cable box. Is there something that I can install in between these devices that will let me watch TV from the Cable box on the Mac's display? The Cable box is in one room, but my tush and the Mac are in the other (fixing code on another machine that can't be part of the equation). Any ideas? Thanks! IVR Avenger

• unknown monitor in lenova laptop

  I have set of two lenova laptops in which Fedora core 13 is installed. In one machine, the monitor is detected properly such that It is possible to connect another monitor. But In another laptop, monitor is shown as unknown monitor. I tried to fix it by reinstalling xorg-x11-drv-intel.i686. But the problem remains same(unknown monitor). it is not possible to connect another monitor with this setting. Laptop model: G460. Graphics card: Intel Graphics Media accelerator HD. Thanks!

  I'm considering setting up a PC as a Media Center. Mainly to watch movies (ideally HD quality) and listening to music, but also to perform tasks like e-mail, web browsing, ... I quite like the looks and the price of this barebone: http://www.asus.de/Barebone_PC/S_Series_7L/S2P8H61E However it comes with integrated graphics and audio and only has one free PCI-Express slot. Which would mean in the worst case, where both integrated graphics and audio turn out to be insufficient, I could only upgrade one.   Possible Duplicate: What is the easiest video editing program to use on Windows hi, i want to edit videos, i'm looking for a good, premiere like software. but it seems premiere it self is too much for me... frankly i can see how those settings can be helpful for any one.. but it doesn't matter. i've just imported an HD video from my new camera (CS4), first, it cut most of the video, and second, it actually made the quality worse... i've tried a few free, programs, but as soon as i've seen the GUI of those, i closed them... i really like premier, but i honestly don't understand who needs all this PAL/DV stuff... is there any similar application that intend to more intermediate users? tahnks.

• Nvidia Optimus shows Nvidia card is always active in Windows 8

  I have loaded the new Asus Nvidia driver for my Asus Ux32VD that I have installed Windows 8 on. It has an Nvidia 620m and Intel hd 4000 integrated graphics. The problem is that the Optimus activity icon in my system tray shows that the Nvidia card is always active, though it shows that it is not doing anything. I can force the system to prefer the Intel graphics, and after rebooting, the Nvidia card will shut off, but then all the programs will be overridden and use the Intel graphics. Is anyone else having problems with Optimus in Windows 8? My battery life is really suffering because I'm always idling my Nvidia card while also presumably running the Intel card. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Dell Studio XPS 16 Runs Hot

  Specs: 1920x1080 i7 1.6 GHz quad core 6GB RAM 1GB ATI Radeon HD 6570M/5700 Series 500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive Love this laptop for many reasons, but it constantly runs hot (CPU is low 70s with basic tasks and often 80+ is not uncommon) and I'm finding it too much to deal with. The laptop feels very hot (almost too hot for a lap) and often gets so hot that the OS slows down or freezes altogether. I've tried cleaning it out and even replacing the thermal paste. I often use an external cooler, but it only helps 3-5 degrees and it's a pain to have to use. I've come to the conclusion that it just runs hot. I have two questions: What is to blame? The i7 processor, the gfx card, or is it just that this laptop has poor cooling? Does the Dell XPS 15 run cooler? I'm looking at replacing my current laptop, but I don't want to run into the same problem.

• Same SCSI drive appears multiple times on the controller list

  Hi, I have an Adaptec AHA-2940UW SCSI adapter, to which I connected a single Atlas 10K III drive (and nothing more). When my computer loads up, the pre-OS Adaptec screen shows (I believe this is called the POST screen), where I can see the Atlas drive listed many times (i.e. with ID0, ID1, ... ID5, ID7, ID8,...,ID15 [ID6 is the adapter itself]) Using the same HD on an Adaptec AHA-2940UB the disk only shows once Since my OS hasn't been installed yet, I'm not sure if this is a problem (I would guess it is), and if so - how to solve it. Termination and multiple LUNs come mind, but the cable provides termination and I don't see why a hard drive would request multiple LUNs, especially considering it is not jumpered at all, and multuple LUN support is disabled in the Adaptec controller BIOS (via the SCSISelect utility) Thank you

• No sound through DisplayPort

  I'm trying to connect my Elitebook 8440p laptop to my Samsung HDTV. The laptop does not have a HDMI connection, but it does have DisplayPort. I bought a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002CSRFD8/ref=oss_product, and connected it with a 3' HDMI cable. The video shows up fine, but there is no audio. DisplayPort, HDMI, and the adapter all support audio. I contacted HP tech support, who told me to update my sound drivers. I installed the driver and rebooted. Supposedly, I should see a "HD Audio" tab. No luck, even after installing the driver again and rebooting. HP closed the case. I'm using XP Pro.

• Norton Backup "Failed to Restore"

  I recently had one of my computers (XP) die on me. I had it's files set to automatically backup to another PC's HD using Norton. I've tried using Norton restore on the second computer to try and restore some files (word documents, pictures), but when I try to do this, I get a dialog box saying that it "Failed to Restore". When I click to continue, it shows a list of the files I tried to restore, along with a status indicator for each file (which says "invalid file"). Any ideas?

• FFmpeg creates emtpy (black) frames

  I have a set of images from a timelapse shot (172 JPG files) that I want to convert into a movie. I tried several parameters with FFmpeg, but all I get is a video with black frames (though it has the expected length). ffmpeg -f image2 -vcodec mjpeg -y -i img_%03d.jpg timelapse2.mpg The command above creates this video: http://sdm-net.org/data/timelapse2.mpg What I'm expecting is something like this (created with Time Lapse Assembler.app): https://vimeo.com/39038362 - This is my fallback option, but I'd really like to create timelapse movies from a script. I'm on OSX Lion (10.7.3) with FFmpeg version (0.10) installed via Homebrew. I also tried to find a proper version of mencoder for OSX, but this doesn't seem to be an easy task. Also, ImageMagick's convert doesn't seem to work nicely, it creates really bad output and it seems there's not much I can do about it...   Hii All, I would like to insatll windows 2003 server on my desktop machine which already has Windows XP service Pack 2 installed . I dont want to overwrite XP but i want to have a option to select XP or Windows 2003 server while booting . I am not sure how to go about this , am afraid if i insert Win 2003 cd and start installing directly it may overwrite XP :( . My HD is 350 GB n RAM is 2 GB with 8 partitions . • A home router for torrents, gaming, webbing and detailed QoS [closed]

  I want to plug in an external HD on it to torrent up never ending (mostly for seeding), with lowest priority. It should even automatically completely stop if it disturbs my net usage, and go back in later. And I want to be able to give gaming (or my computer) the highest priority, because of its ping requirements. It should be above even of Skype and any voip, which also have high priority. Web surfing and "youtubing" comes in the middle - it won't matter much if it delays a second or two. Finally, interface as simple as possible. It's fine if it's command line setup, but it needs to have a GUI. What are my options for routers / firmwares as described? Maybe Gargoyle? Or even Time Capsule? It seems to me good old DD-WRT isn't the best option out there anymore. I wonder what else could cover these grounds.

  I have a dell studio 1555 laptop with a GPU inside. The details are below; Hardware details Software details I can play games in widescreen in Vista, but not in 7. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I have the latest Catalyst Control Center. Instead of widescreen, the games are running in a classic style, say 1024x768 ratio. When I play need for speed underground, the maximum possible resolution is 1024x768 (all other games are like this). I have no problem with HD videos and anything else. How can I fix this? • Significant OS X Finder lag when listing directories/files

  I'm experiencing some significant OS X finder lag, that seems to be purely an issue with Finder itself, and not the HD or any other part of OS X (I'll explain below). The lag only appears to be when listing directories/files, where I'm seeing up to twelve or so seconds of lag (the folder opens with a blank list and the spinner going in the bottom right). This happens with both the local SSD and network drives (connected via ethernet or wifi) Browsing both local and network drives in terminal and listing directories is instant I can actually browse files on my NAS from my phone over a 3G connection from the other side of the country faster than Finder can when connected to the local network (madness!)   On my dual-boot iMac, after fixing the well-known "EFI Boot" issue, will booting Windows cause the same issue again? I'm hesitant to try booting Windows until I hear from others. Details: It all started when I had been working in Windows and then re-booted into Mac OSX Snow Leopard. Any attempt to boot into OSX would result in two giveaway symptoms: 1) The MAC HD was re-named "EFI Boot", and 2) a gray progress bar stopped at 10% and the spinning wheel kept spinning - no joy. Many articles on Mac Forums describe the same thing, including the fix, which is to erasing the damaged partition and either: a) re-install the OS from DVD, or b) perform a Time Machine RESTORE (which I did). Is there anything I can do to keep enjoying the benefits of a dual-boot iMac without fear of a repeat problem and associated 2-hour restore from Time Machine?

  Hi Guys, AMD PC Motherboard - ASUS M3A78-EM (installed VGA drivers from ASUS website - AMD_VGA_V863200_XPVistaWin7.zip) It has VGA and HDMI inbuilt ports (ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics 256MB) VGA is connected to my ViewSonic Monitor. HDMI is connected to LG LCD TV OS - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Sometimes, when I reboot/start my PC, my ViewSonic display resolution changes and does not show the recommended value(1440x900) in Resolution Settings. The HDMI display works well always. But after multiple reboots/starts, the problem gets fixed automatically and I get back my recommended resolution on ViewSonic display. I am not making any changes to the existing drivers. It sometimes work well, and sometimes doesn't work. Can someone assist me resolving this permanently.

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series video card, using the ATI Catalyst Control Center to span my Windows XP display over the laptop display and a Dell flatpanel LCD. This works fine, but I'm used to NVIDIA multi-desktop that let me control the "Start bar" to either exist on only 1 screen... be duplicated on both, or (what I want), stretched across both. Is this possible with the ATI card/Catalyst Software? If not, are there any utilities out there that will handle this for me? • Lagging digital tv over ethernet

  I have a HD Home Run TV over ethernet device, which connects the aerial to my router, and from there the router connects to my PC over about 15m of 100Mbps ethernet cable. The TV output lags every second. It does not do so for a computer much closer to the router. It is odd to me that the network rate is around 7Mbps on a 100Mbps cable. I am not downloading or streaming anything else on the affected computer. Is this lag caused by the speed of the cable, the length of the cable, or interference on the cable? I am considering swapping the ethernet cable with shielded ethernet cable.

• Ways to increase my Ubuntu partition space

  I am currently running Ubuntu and Windows 7 as dual-boot on a single HD. The problem is that when I installed Ubuntu, I didn't allocate as much space as I thought I would need and now I need 'reinstall' Ubuntu so that I can increase the amount of storage space. Now there are two ways to go about this. Either I use use gparted to increase my partition space (but I read that it's not really that safe as regards data loss) or create the new partition with more space and reinstall Ubuntu there. But if want to reinstall Ubuntu, is there a way I can somehow "save" my current Ubuntu and install that one? What I mean is that I don't want to lose my current installed packages and files that I have on this partition. Is there a way to kind of maybe 'streamline' my current Ubuntu so that I install this one on the new partition? If not, what are your opinions as regards gparted?

  On paper, the HDMI version of the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e120 is 1.3, which supports WQHD. Does it actually work? I want to connect the e120 to a WQHD display, such as the Dell U2711 or an Apple Cinema Display. I run Windows 7 Ultimate and latest drivers. The e120 I think has the Intel HD Graphics 3000 onboard chipset. I don't have the chance to test out the e120 with neither of these displays, so I'm seeking for an opinion from those who have tried. • Advise on a 240,000 sqft outdoor wireless network

  I would be very appreciative of some advice in the purchase of equipment to provide a wireless network that covers the entire area of an outdoor arena. The area is rectangular-ish in shape. 400ft wide and 600ft long. It has 6 light towers, 1 on each of the 400 foot ends and 2 on each of the 600 foot ends. I can mount on anything and spend as much money as needed. The needs of the network would be to provide access for, up to 15 wireless HD cameras with audio, and a public-wifi network. Can someone point me in the right direction as far as equipment and antennas ? I can provide any additional information that you may need.

• What happens to a Windows Dynamic Drive

  In my windows (Windows 7) I have two primary logical volumns, One is on a SSD harddrive for my operating system and installed software, and my other is a Dynamic volume for my stored media. (I do alot of work with HD footage) I have all my media on the original DV tapes for backup purposes, just having them all available on my harddrive at all times is a major convience for me, well worth the few hundred dollar investment those 2TB drives were. Anyway, Long story short is my windows install has become problematic and I want to reformat windows. Does this, or will this effect my dynamic drive in any way? I've got almost 3 TB of video on there and i really dont want to re-import all my DV tapes.

  Hi I purchased a OWC data doubler http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDAMBS0GB/ ... Long story short it lets you add a second HD to your macbook pro in place of the cd/dvd drive (which is useless anyway, impossible to get stuff out when stuck). My current setup is 600gb intel SSD bootdrive 100gb partition for OSX / 500gb for Windows 7 Prof from Bootcamp (use 99 % of time). My desire is to have a second 300gb SSD to run disk intensive VM's off of. So I added a second 300gb intel SSD (again, NO desire to boot off of) on the sata optical port. I can see the drive no problem if I boot in to OSX, however, can't see it in disk management on Win7 ??? Any ideas similar experience ... Funny thing is I can see it in "Device Manager Disk Drivers" but not Disk Management ??? Also no I don't want to use Fusion/Parallels this is a waste of resources for me.
