• Windows Server Backup - Can I restore to a particular revision?

  I'm using Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008 to do a scheduled daily backup to a dedicated hard-drive on the server. I noticed that under "All backups" it says I have 45 copies. Does this mean that I can restore to any revision of my data upon system failure? If the answer is yes, then I don't have to worry about taking monthly or weekly snapshots of my data. I'm concerned about a data corruption event occurring that working its way into my backups... then not having a clean snapshot to go back to. Thanks!

• SBS 2008 DNS issues in BPA

  I'm gettng constant Critical Issue events in the Small Business Server Best Practices Analyser & resulting SBS Console reports that begin "The DNS client is not configured to point only to the internal IP address of the server.". When I check the DNS Manager, there are two separate IPs listed, one ***.***.***.2 and the other ***.***.***.28. I have checked online after an ipconfig /all and have found the reason for this to be that the second IP is created by DHCP for RAS & VPN purposes. It seems to cause no conflicts of any detrimental result apart from constantly sending me error messages and alerted reports. Does anyone know of a way that I can change settings somewhere so that Windows accepts this second IP, or at least stops alerting me of its prescence? Perhaps a registry hack of some kind...?   I tried setting up triggers in Task Scheduler Windows Server 2008, but Microsoft needs to fix a bug that I documented on Stack Overflow. So I can't use triggers until they fix this bug. Here's where the XPath is stored for the Task Trigger XML tab (that I can't rely on): C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\ I cannot find where the events (or log files containing the event ids) of each task are stored. Does anyone know where to find these log files? The log name is "Microsoft-Windows-TaskScheduler/Operational".

• Restoring permissions on Windows 2008

  I have played with folder permissions due to SVN not being able to write to a folder and now I got into a state where I go to any folder of C: drive in Windows Explorer and when I right-click it takes 30 seconds to show the context menu and it just hangs the window after that. It definitely has something to do with permissions as it was all working fine until I started tweaking permissions about an hour ago. My login belongs to two groups Users and Administrators. I changed ownership of C drive to Administrators group and I think it screwed everything, but I can't change it back because I don't even remember what it was :) Oh, and only Administrators group has access to drive C now. Any way to reset permissions to some previous state or some workable state?

• SQL Server 2008 R2 Replication log reader could not execute sp_replcmds

  This log reader agent worked perfectly for several months until the user referenced in the error was removed from the domain. After that time the error 'The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'SERVER'' was received with more detail 'Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user' that referenced said user. This user was referenced nowhere in the the log reader agent other than the Publication Access List from which it was subsequenctly removed. The agent would still not successfully start up. The simple problem here, I believe, is that the log reader agent was created under that user and that no longer exists in the domain. Is there an 'owner' somewhere that needs to be changed? Every other function on the database continues to execute successfully. Any other help or thought would be appreciated.

• Windows Server 2008 r2 FTP blocking outside connections

  I have a windows server 2008r2 running IIS 7.5. I am trying to setup a FTP-server in IIS but I'm running into some annoying problems. Setting up the server works fine but when I try to connect from a remote client the connection times out. I have tried to connect to the FTP-server from the localhost and it works flawlessly. I figured that it should be some trouble with the firewall so I went into firewall settings and disabled the Public Profile and my remote connections worked! In my inbound rules there are rules for FTP-connections to allow all profiles etc. I guess they are made automatically when setting up the FTP-server. Anyone got any idea how to allow remote connections without turning off the public firewall?

I thought about just renaming the current install to something like c:\apache2_old and if something fails, I can delete the new install and rename c:\apace2_old back to c:\apache. What do you all think?

  In line with this post: http://www.hugheserblog.com/2012/05/22/error-creating-iis-smtp-virtual-servers/ I am receiving the same issues: When we tried to add more than 4 IIS SMTP virtual servers, we got the error within IIS, “The system cannot find the path specified.” This post is almost 2 years old and my server is up to date with Windows updates so I assumed it would be fixed already. Does anyone know if I need to do something special (ie. contact Microsoft) to get a special fix for this? The information in the post suggests it should have been included in an update.

• Disk Cleanup on Server 2008 R2 is ineffective

  I have a user profile with ~2.9GB of Error Reports backed up in the ReportQueue folder (C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue). Running DiskCleanup as the administrator does not detect these files and therefore does not clean them up. However, running the utility as the user shows an even larger amount (12.4GB!) of error reporting files. As seen below: The problem is that after running the cleanup utility the disk spaced used does not decrease by anywhere near 12.4GB and running the utility again detects the same 12.4GB of files. What is the problem here? Alternatively, can I manually delete the files in the ReportQueue folder?

Prior to decomissioning the serve, the databases have to be migrated to another clustered SQL server with two nodes(SQLServer1 and SQLserver2). I am not a DB admin no experience in SQL, and I have been given the task of migrating the Databases on the old server to the new custered environmnet. • Server 2008 R2 file access permissions

  I'm finding it awkward to sort out permissions for file sharing and access on my LAN. I've created an account on the server node (as a normal user) and shared a drive that has 2 folders at the root, one is for personal file storage and the other shared files, if I connect to the shared area from a workstation running windows 7 and log-in using the account I created on the server, I can look through directories but can't look in some (which I wanted as I changed the permissions for that to happen), but my problem is although the permissions are set for this user account to have full control of the specific folder I can't create a folder in that area or upload files to that folder. Could someone explain why this is? Thanks in advanced

  Is there a way to disable or bypass the "Welcome" screen I see when I'm using RDC to log in to a machine using saved credentials? I have startup task which launches an RDP session automatically to localhost when the machine boots. This works, except that the remote desktop window stops and waits for an "OK" on the Welcome screen: MACHINENAME-A.B.C.D(Server ID:Console 0) Welcome [OK] This screen is preventing me from automating this login. • DNSCache excesive memory usage Windows Server 2008 R2

  We are having an issue with the dnscache service where its memory usage is becoming excessive (~6GB) after a week or two. Restarting the service frees this memory but performing ipconfig /flushdns does not, an ipconfig /displaydns shows aprox 15-20 entries in the cache. We have checked and there appears to be aprox 150 DNS queries per second taking place but I would not expect this to have the effect of causing this memory issue. I have tried to search MSDN for hotfixes or bug reports but I could only find a reference to a memory leak in windows 2003. can anyone suggest how to proceed.

  I have an Amazon EC2 machine (Windows Server 2003 R2) where I want to run a script (.bat file) when the Windows Server 2003 R2 machine boots up. This need to run BEFORE any user logs in. Ideally I'd like to extend the same work-around on my Windows Server 2008 R2 instances too - but Windows Server 2003 R2 is critical for me as of now. Purely as FYI, the .bat file updates the DDNS records so the EC2 machine doesn't need to consume static IPs.

  I have a web project(.Net4) that needs to access Excel file, but it ends up with the following error message: Error occured during file generation.Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'D:\xx\xx\abc.xls'. There are several possible reasons: • The file name or path does not exist. (Actually it's there) • The file is being used by another program.(It cant happen) • The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook. In IIS7, I use DefaultAppPool with the Identity "myservice" who's under the Group of Administrators. In the Authentication Page of my website under IIS, Anonymous Authentication was enabled and set to "Application pool identity" and ASP.NET Impersonation was disabled. After searching the solution for hours, I found the following but NONE of them work Create folder in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\Desktop. Plz refer:this Grant rights of "myservice" in Component Services. Plz refer:this One thing strange, there is nothing in the Group of IIS_IUSRS. Is that normal? Cause I remember at least two users (DefaultAppPool & Classic .Net AppPool). Plz tell me how to fix the access problem. I assume that's permission problem of IIS but I cant solve it. Thank you.

  i know this is way too general question but anyway. I need few tools, will write down my tasks as sysadmin and if you have any to automate my job i would be glad to hear. I don't mind paying for software needed unless it is way too expensive. First of i backup all files on server at local/office storage. I 7zip all SQL backup files and then move them over network to centralized location and then FTP them from office PC which has no FTP server installed and cannot have one. Backups happen at 4AM at the morning thus i need to set time for compressing and afterward FTPing. Then i FTP all IIS web application as differentiation backup, same goes for VOD movies. Second tool i need is system monitor which will monitor all servers from themselves and from external location for CPU/Memory/Hard disk and other basic failures. This tool should able to execute Website address with parameters which will send me an email with all report on failure. Third tool i need is a way to get all Event Logs from 10 Windows based servers without accessing each any of them manually. If you know any solution, thanks in advance.

  I am trying to add a domain user. I am doing the following. Expand Security Right click on Logins Select New Login... Login name select search Click on location and select entire directory Type username Click checkname The name goes underlined and add some more info Click OK Click OK I then get the following error: I have found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324321. The Login does exist There is no Duplicate security identifiers Authentication failure I don't think is happening as I can browse AD Case sensitivity should not be the problem as I am doing the checkname and it is correcting it. Not a Local account Name resolution again I can see the AD I have rebooted the server (VM) and the issue is still happening. Any ideas? • Windows 2003 DC to Windows 2008 R2 DC with same name and same IP

  Environment = Windows 2003 native domain with 8 DCs I've got an old domain controller that is running 2003, CA Enterprise role, DHCP, DNS, a few GPO scripts that point to shares on it, and some other minor functions. All our servers point to it as their primary DNS, and there's lots of references to its IP or name throughout the domain at this point (8+ years later). I really don't feel like manually changing all of this, it would be a pretty massive undertaking. I want to follow this guide: http://msmvps.com/blogs/acefekay/archive/2010/10/09/remove-an-old-dc-and-introduce-a-new-dc-with-the-same-name-and-ip-address.aspx to hopefully end up with basically an "in-place upgrade" so to say. I considered just doing a P2V of the box, but we don't really want to keep it around running 2003 to be honest. I also considered using a CNAME and adding a 2nd IP (the old one) but again, it seemed like it would be cleaner using the attached link. My actual question: Any gotchas or big caution signs when doing what the link suggests? Anyone gone down this road and have advice on how to proceed?
