I need to know how to refer to these to let customers clearly know which version of Windows we (currently) support.   • How to make my Ubuntu an internet gateway for my Android phone

    I want to use the internet of my school on my Android, the problem is they have a Squid proxy, and many applications on my phone don't use the proxy at all. The obvious solution is to install a transparent proxy on my Android to force all applications to connect through it. The problem is that I need to root the phone to make it work, and I don't want to do it because it's not really my phone and rooting is a little risky- Another solution, which is safer, is to make my computer run as a gateway, so I put my Ubuntu IP in the gateway parameter of the phone. I'm running a small proxy on my ubuntu (cntlm), so I redirect the Android traffic to it. I did it with "iptables" as follows: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -s 10.0.1.118 -p tcp -j REDIRECT --to-ports 8888 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -s 10.0.1.118 -p udp -j REDIRECT --to-ports 8888 10.0.1.118 is the IP of the phone, 8888 is the port of cntlm (proxy on my PC). Now, on the phone: When I enter www.google.com on the navigator I get nothing (web site not found, error message of Firefox). But, when I enter http://74.125.143.101 (IP of Google) I get an error message from the school proxy (so it worked in some way – my PC redirected the traffic of the phone to the Squid proxy). The error message is : The requested URL could not be retrieved while trying to process the request get / http/1.1 host 74.125.143.101 user-Agent ... ... I think the problem is in the "GET" header,it should be GET 74.125.143.101 HTTP/1.1. But I don't understand what's happening, and I'm a certified CCNA.

  • On ubuntu 10.04, what is the recommended RoR stack?

    I can't find clear answers / methods on this. As seen elsewhere, passenger and RoR under apache gobble up ram on my VPS. I've tried a multitude of stacks and implementations, currently resting on a sub optimal apache/cgi/rails configuration, which has swapped my ram usage for CPU time and slow response to requests. Can anyone recommend an efficient and preferably simple to administer method of setting up rails apps in ubuntu 10.04 server?

  • What causes "system call failed" and there are hanging ie processes?

    System: Windows 7 Home Premium IE: 11.0.9600.17107 When I have had many, many apps and windows open, sometimes I'll try to access a folder and get a dialog that says "System Call Failed". I have found the fix for it is to open the task manager and End Process Tree on iexplore.exe and iexplore.exe *32. Often times there will be several of these even when I have closed all my browser windows. Does anyone have any experience with this error?

  • Can't access apache from outsite my local network

    UPDATED: Now, when I type my external ip like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8079, i can access xampp defaults page. But the strange is that when someone else from outside my network, try to access it using the same ip, it doesnt work. I Think it should, because its the external ip. I'm getting crazy. I have tried for hours to access xampp defaults page from outside my local network. My ISP blocks port 80 and 8080. So I changed apache to listen to port 8079 Listen 8079 My local computer ip is 10.1.1.2 I can access the webserver, from any computer on my local network when I type http://10.1.1.2:8079 I also oppended the port 8079 on my modem, as the image shows bellow. (I think i did it right) When apache is running on my computer, if I test the port 8079 at http://canyouseeme.org/ i get the message "Success: I can see your service on xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx on port (8079) Your ISP is not blocking port 8079" If apache is not running I get "Error: I could not see your service on xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx on port (8079) Reason: Connection refused". So, it's clear that the port 8079 is oppened. But when I type xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8079 on google chrome for example, I get Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8079 What can I do to solve this, to allow apache to server the pages? I don't know what else I shoud configure. Please, help me. Thanks.

    Hi, I'm wondering if there's a way to not show hidden applications in the list of running apps when using Command-Tab ? LiteSwitch (http://www.proteron.com/) sort of does what I want, except it grays out hidden applications, but I want them to not appear at all. I use hidden applications as a sort of 'I'll get to later, or don't bother me now' method, so it would be great if Command-Tab could honor that (the same was Expose does). Thanks.

    I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up?   • Project compilation requires a class that is not used anywhere

    When I build with ant my project that uses libgdx, I get a strange error. It says that a class com.google.gwt.dom.client.ImageElement is not found, but it isn't used at all in the code. How can I find what makes this class necessary? Even searching over the whole project doesn't give any results. It says that error is at PixmapTextureAtlas.java:16 (class source), but there is no code that uses that ImageElement class. Adding the library containing com.google.gwt.dom.client.ImageElement class helps, of course, but I'd like to figure out why this class in needed. Every time a bookmark is changed, I need the link_count to be changed as needed. If we take this array output as the starting places: Array ( [0] => 0 [1] => 1 [2] => 2 [3] => 3 [4] => 4 [5] => 5 ) Each index equalling the link_count position, the resulting update would become: Array ( [0] => 1 [1] => 0 [2] => 3 [3] => 4 [4] => 5 [5] => 2 ) I have tried many ways but none are successful.   • How to run Repository Creation Utility (RCU) on 64-bit Linux

    I was setting up WebCenter Content (WCC) on a new virtual box running 64-bit Linux and ran into a problem when I tried to run the Repository Creation Utility (RCU). I saw this error when trying to start RCU .../rcuHome/jdk/jre/bin/java: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory I think I remember running into this before and reading something about RCU only being supported on 32-bit Linux. I decided to try and see if I could get it to run on 64-bit Linux. I saw it was using it's own copy of java (.../rcuHome/jdk/jre/bin/java), so I decided to try and get it to use the 64-bit JRockit I had already installed. I edited the rcu script in rcuHome/bin and replaced JRE_DIR=$ORACLE_HOME/jdk/jre with JRE_DIR=/apps/java/jrockit-jdk1.6.0_29-R28.2.2-4.1.0 Sure enough that fixed it. I was able to run RCU and create the WCC schema.

  • Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community

    There we go! I finally managed to push myself forward and pick up an old, actually too old, idea since I ever arrived here in Mauritius more than six years ago. I'm talking about a community for all kind of ICT connected people. In the past (back in Germany), I used to be involved in various community activities. For example, I was part of the Microsoft Community Leader/Influencer Program (CLIP) in Germany due to an FAQ on Visual FoxPro, actually Active FoxPro Pages (AFP) to be more precise. Then in 2003/2004 I addressed the responsible person of the dFPUG user group in Speyer in order to assist him in organising monthly user group meetings. Well, he handed over management completely, and attended our meetings regularly. Why did it take you so long? Well, I don't want to bother you with the details but short version is that I was too busy on either job (building up new companies) or private life (got married and we have two lovely children, eh 'monsters') or even both. But now is the time where I was starting to look for new fields given the fact that I gained some spare time. My businesses are up and running, the kids are in school, and I am finally in a position where I can commit myself again to community activities. And I love to do that! Why a new user group? Good question... And 'easy' to answer. Since back in 2007 I did my usual research, eh Google searches, to see whether there existing user groups in Mauritius and in which field of interest. And yes, there are! If I recall this correctly, then there are communities for PHP, Drupal, Python (just recently), Oracle, and Linux (which used to be even two). But... either they do not exist anymore, they are dormant, or there is only a low heart-beat, frankly speaking. And yes, I went to meetings of the Linux User Group Meta (Mauritius) back in 2010/2011 and just recently. I really like the setup and the way the LUGM is organised. It's just that I have a slightly different point of view on how a user group or community should organise itself and how to approach future members. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing others doing a very good job, I'm only saying that I'd like to do it differently. The last meeting of the LUGM was awesome; read my feedback about it. Ok, so what's up with 'Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community' or short: MSCC? As I've already written in my article on 'Communities - The importance of exchange and discussion' I think it is essential in a world of IT to stay 'connected' with a good number of other people in the same field. There is so much dynamic and every day's news that it is almost impossible to keep on track with all of them. The MSCC is going to provide a common platform to exchange experience and share knowledge between each other. You might be a newbie and want to know what to expect working as a software developer, or as a database administrator, or maybe as an IT systems administrator, or you're an experienced geek that loves to share your ideas or solutions that you implemented to solve a specific problem, or you're the business (or HR) guy that is looking for 'fresh' blood to enforce your existing team. Or... you're just interested and you'd like to communicate with like-minded people. Meetup of 26.06.2013 @ L'arabica: Of course there are laptops around. Free WiFi, power outlet, coffee, code and Linux in one go. The MSCC is technology-agnostic and spans an umbrella over any kind of technology. Simply because you can't ignore other technologies anymore in a connected IT world as we have. A front-end developer for iOS applications should have the chance to connect with a Python back-end coder and eventually with a DBA for MySQL or PostgreSQL and exchange their experience. Furthermore, I'm a huge fan of cross-platform development, and it is very pleasant to have pure Web developers - with all that HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and JS libraries stuff - and passionate C# or Java coders at the same table. This diversity of knowledge can assist and boost your personal situation. And last but not least, there are projects and open positions 'flying' around... People might like to hear others opinion about an employer or get new impulses on how to tackle down an issue at their workspace, etc. This is about community. And that's how I see the MSCC in general - free of any limitations be it by programming language or technology. Having the chance to exchange experience and to discuss certain aspects of technology saves you time and money, and it's a pleasure to enjoy. Compared to dusty books and remote online resources. It's human! Organising meetups (meetings, get-together, gatherings - you name it!) As of writing this article, the MSCC is currently meeting every Wednesday for the weekly 'Code & Coffee' session at various locations (suggestions are welcome!) in Mauritius. This might change in the future eventually but especially at the beginning I think it is very important to create awareness in the Mauritian IT world. Yes, we are here! Come and join us! ;-) The MSCC's main online presence is located at Meetup.com because it allows me to handle the organisation of events and meeting appointments very easily, and any member can have a look who else is involved so that an exchange of contacts is given at any time. In combination with the other entities (G+ Communities, FB Pages or in Groups) I advertise and manage all future activities here: Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community This is a community for those who care and are proud of what they do. For those developers, regardless how experienced they are, who want to improve and master their craft. This is a community for those who believe that being average is just not good enough. I know, there are not many 'craftsmen' yet but it's a start... Let's see how it looks like by the end of the year. There are free smartphone apps for Android and iOS from Meetup.com that allow you to keep track of meetings and to stay informed on latest updates. And last but not least, there is a Trello workspace to collect and share ideas and provide downloads of slides, etc. Trello is also available as free smartphone app. Sharing is caring! As mentioned, the #MSCC is present in various social media networks in order to cover as many people as possible here in Mauritius. Your future looks bright Running and participating in a user group or any kind of community usually provides quite a number of advantages for anyone. On the one side it is very joyful for me to organise appointments and get in touch with people that might be interested to present a little demo of their projects or their recent problems they had to tackle down, and on the other side there are lots of companies that have various support programs or sponsorships especially tailored for user groups. At the moment, I already have a couple of gimmicks that I would like to hand out in small contests or raffles during one of the upcoming meetings, and as said, companies provide all kind of goodies, books free of charge, or sometimes even licenses for communities. Meeting other software developers or IT guys also opens up your point of view on the local market and there might be interesting projects or job offers available, too. A community like the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community is great for freelancers, self-employed, students and of course employees.   • How to Find Office 2003 Commands in Office 2010

    Are you new to the ribbon interface in Office 2010?  Here’s how you can get up to speed and learn where everything is quickly and easily. Microsoft has made an interactive guide to Office 2010’s new interface to help users learn their way around the new version.  If you’ve already used Office 2007, then Office 2010 will be very easy to transition to, but if you’re still using Office 2003 you may find the learning curve more steep.  With this interactive guide, upgrading your Office skills doesn’t have to be hard. Learn Your Way Around the Office Ribbon Open the Office 2010 interactive guides site (link below) in your browser, and select the Office app you want to explore. The guides are powered by Silverlight, so if you don’t already have it installed you will be prompted to do so. Once the guide has loaded, click Start to begin. Select any menu or toolbar item in the Office 2003 mockup.  A tooltip will appear to show you how to find this option in Word 2010. If you click the item, the interface will switch to an Office 2010 mockup and will interactively show you how to access this feature.  The Thumbnails view isn’t available by default in Word 2010, so it shows us how to add it to the ribbon.  When you’ve figured this command out, click anywhere to go back to the Office 2003 mockup and find another item. Currently the guides are available for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but the site says that guides for the other Office apps will be available soon.  Here’s the PowerPoint guide showing where the Rehearse Timings option is in PowerPoint 2010. Install the Interactive Guides to Your Computer You can also install the guides to your computer so you can easily access them even if you’re not online.  Open the guide you want to install, and click the Install button in the top right corner of the guide. Choose where you want the shortcuts, and click Ok. Here’s the Interactive Word 2010 guide installed on our computer.  The downloaded version seemed to work faster in our tests, likely because all the content was already saved to the computer.  If you decide you don’t need it any more, click Uninstall in the top right corner. Download Office Cheat Sheets If you’d like a cheat-sheet of Office commands that have changed or are new in Office 2010, Microsoft’s got that for you, too.  You can download Office reference workbooks (link below) that show how to access each item that was in Office 2003’s menus.  Here’s the Word guide showing where each of Word 2003’s commands from the help menu are in Word 2010. Learn Your Way Around Office 2007, Too! Microsoft offers similar interactive guides for learning the ribbon in Office 2007, so if you’re still using Office 2007 but can’t find a command, feel free to check it out as well (link below).  Guides are available for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook 2007.  You can also download cheat sheets for Office 2007 at this site as well.  Here’s the tutorial showing us where the font options are in PowerPoint 2007. Conclusion We have found the ribbon interface to be a great addition to Office, but if you’ve got years of Office 2003 experience under your belt you may find it difficult to locate your favorite commands.  These tutorials can help you use your old Office knowledge to learn Office 2010 or 2007 in a quick and easy way!
