• Why does the login screen fail to appear?

  My system: Dell Precision T3500 nVidia Quadro NVS 295 Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 (3.2.0-32) Essential problem: On boot my system won't get past the splash screen. I can switch to another virtual terminal and log in, I can also ssh from another system -- so it appears that the problem might be with the display manager. How can I diagnose and fix this problem? More info: From a VT I can issue sudo lightdm restart, and this will bring up the login screen and and I can continue from there. So I do have access to my system. • Macbook Air freezes while running Ubuntu 13.10

  Ok folks I'm trying to setup my Macbook Air to run Ubuntu 13.10 (note: I normally using Kubuntu but currently running Ubuntu). I have run all of the updates for the system as of this posting. This happens regardless of the application I have open (Firefox, Terminal, Software Updater). The system will freeze, become unresponsive and then kick me back to the login screen. I don't see a crash notification or anything to send as troubleshooting so I don't know where to start

• Deactivate volume amplification?

  Hi everyone, I would like to deactivate the amplification feature on my sound volume slider. Using any amplification makes the sound really bad with clipping sounds taking over. It's really annoying to have to worry about where the amplification starts/stops when adjusting the slider from my keyboard or through the Gnome panel (sound thingy). I have to open the "Sound preferences" after each time adjusting the volume and ensure that the level is set to 100% unamplified. So can I do this someway easy in Ubuntu 10.10?

• Transmission stopped working, says it's not installed even though it is

  So transmission decided to randomly stop working. When I click on torrents transmission comes up as an option, but when I click ok nothing happens. When I go to the terminal and try to open transmission it tells me it's not installed. it recommends I install it with sudo apt-get install transmission-gtk. When I do this it says something like "transmission already newest version." So it's installed, clearly. Somebodddy help!

I got frustrated when I have to type again paths with commands, I'm developing for android and I use adb so you can know it can be quite a lot of commands to issue.   I ran : sudo apt-get install curl libcurl3 libcurl3-dev php5-curl Put: extension=php_curl.so in both /etc/php5/cli/php.ini and /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini But running php from the command line gives me the following error: PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/php_curl.so' - /usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/php_curl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 Running the install commands again tells me that everything is already the newest version.   It's common in games to implement some sort of numerical ranking system -- the ELO system is usually used in chess. I could implement this system naively using Wikipedia's descriptions, but I suspect that this would open up a whole box of problems that have already been solved: rating inflation, etc -- for instance, the ELO system has a K constant that's 'fudged' according to rating, duration, pairings, statistics, ... What are some libraries (I'm looking at Python, but anything is okay) that implements rating systems? It also doesn't have to be ELO.

  I am using my application with hebrew (right-to-left) layout. I have a feature where I open an activity with EditText in it - where I put some text (previously entered by the user) to be edited by him. However, when I do setText I find out that the text is aligned to the left of the edittext instead of of the right. (If I start with empty edittext then it is automatically right aligned when user starts inputting hebrew, but cursor is positioned to the left) (android:gravity="right" does not work)
