• How do we keep dependent data structures up to date?

  Suppose you have a parse tree, an abstract syntax tree, and a control flow graph, each one logically derived from the one before. In principle it is easy to construct each graph given the parse tree, but how can we manage the complexity of updating the graphs when the parse tree is modified? We know exactly how the tree has been modified, but how can the change be propagated to the other trees in a way that doesn't become difficult to manage? Naturally the dependent graph can be updated by simply reconstructing it from scratch every time the first graph changes, but then there would be no way of knowing the details of the changes in the dependent graph. I currently have four ways to attempt to solve this problem, but each one has difficulties. Nodes of the dependent tree each observe the relevant nodes of the original tree, updating themselves and the observer lists of original tree nodes as necessary. The conceptual complexity of this can become daunting. Each node of the original tree has a list of the dependent tree nodes that specifically depend upon it, and when the node changes it sets a flag on the dependent nodes to mark them as dirty, including the parents of the dependent nodes all the way down to the root. After each change we run an algorithm that is much like the algorithm for constructing the dependent graph from scratch, but it skips over any clean node and reconstructs each dirty node, keeping track of whether the reconstructed node is actually different from the dirty node. This can also get tricky. We can represent the logical connection between the original graph and the dependent graph as a data structure, like a list of constraints, perhaps designed using a declarative language. When the original graph changes we need only scan the list to discover which constraints are violated and how the dependent tree needs to change to correct the violation, all encoded as data. We can reconstruct the dependent graph from scratch as though there were no existing dependent graph, and then compare the existing graph and the new graph to discover how it has changed. I'm sure this is the easiest way because I know there are algorithms available for detecting differences, but they are all quite computationally expensive and in principle it seems unnecessary so I'm deliberately avoiding this option. What is the right way to deal with these sorts of problems? Surely there must be a design pattern that makes this whole thing almost easy. It would be nice to have a good solution for every problem of this general description. Does this class of problem have a name?

• How to fill in the network line in the ubuntu interfaces config file?

  I have to configure an ubuntu hardy server network interface. The service hoster told me that this is the network data for the machine: IP Range: 111.111.200.74 to 111.111.200.78 Netmask: 255.255.255.248 Broadcast: 111.111.200.79 Gateway: 111.111.200.73 Subnet: 111.111.200.72/29 I am only using the first IP address. I will update the /etc/hosts file with 111.111.200.74, but I am still unsure how the /etc/network/interfaces file should be. This is my plan: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 111.111.200.74 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 111.111.200.??? broadcast 111.111.200.79 gateway 111.111.200.73 As you can see I don't know how to build the network line. How would I calculate the data for the network line and what is the result? (I changed the first 2 octets of the subnet, they are not "111.111" in the real setup.)

• Running a defect php file cause error 500

  When I address a PHP file, I always get an error 500. I've looked up the logs of my Apache server, and this displays that some includes etc. in the PHP file address files which don't exist on the server. They don't exist because I'm just testing my PHP file. But could it be achieved that the server runs the php file in every case, even when something is wrong? Every 30 seconds an entry is made in the error_log file which says [Sat Jun 09 17:55:07 2012] [error] [client 10.224.55.160] File does not exist: /var/www/html/index.html ... but there IS an index.html?!

  I have two custom scripts I just wrote to facilitate transferring files between my VPS and my home server. The problem is that, for a very quick second, I see something flash along the lines of "Connection Refused" (before pv overwrites it), and no file is ever transferred. The receiver has no firewall, and outbound traffic on that port is allowed on the sender. I have no idea what to troubleshoot next. Any ideas? I've 2 systems at home: xp system-------connected to internet(dynamic public ip) & allowed other users to connected to the internet on the interface. windows vista system--------enabled dhcp on the interface to access internet from xp. How could I remotely connect from my office to the 'vista system'?. If I've a router/modem at my home it may be possible to allow the ports for the system but I don't. Any tips?

• SCHA API for resource group failover / switchover history

  The Oracle Solaris Cluster framework keeps an internal log of cluster events, including switchover and failover of resource groups. These logs can be useful to Oracle support engineers for diagnosing cluster behavior. However, till now, there was no external interface to access the event history. Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.2 provides a new API option for viewing the recent history of resource group switchovers in a program-parsable format. Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.2 provides a new option tag argument RG_FAILOVER_LOG for the existing API command scha_cluster_get which can be used to list recent failover / switchover events for resource groups. The command usage is as shown below: # scha_cluster_get -O RG_FAILOVER_LOG number_of_days number_of_days : the number of days to be considered for scanning the historical logs. The command returns a list of events in the following format. Each field is separated by a semi-colon [;]: resource_group_name;source_nodes;target_nodes;time_stamp source_nodes: node_names from which resource group is failed over or was switched manually. target_nodes: node_names to which the resource group failed over or was switched manually. There is a corresponding enhancement in the C API function scha_cluster_get() which uses the SCHA_RG_FAILOVER_LOG query tag.   Should I be using WAI-ARIA in my website builds? Will it have any benefit? Is anyone adding 'role' to their code at the moment? The tab, link, checkbox and slider roles, plus many more, aren't available yet for HTML5. From looking at the list of what is available (see below), and what will be coming in the future, it looks like we might be applying roles to a huge amount of tags on our pages. Its not an issue especially if it brings benefit to users using readers etc Also, a side question, will search engines give any benefits to sites using WAI-ARIA? • How does copyrights apply to source code header files?

  It seems I heard that header files are not considered copyrightable since they can only be written one way (like a list of ingredients or facts). So a header file for a specific DLL will always look the same when written in a given programming language. Unfortunately I can't find any resources to back this up. So if a vendor provides an SDK with headers in one programming language, and then those headers are translated into another programming language by a third party. Does the 3rd party need permission from the vendor to provide the header translation? Who owns the copyright on the translation? Isn't it a derivative work still owned by the vendor, or is there no copyright, like a list of ingredients? Does this vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction?

  I want to access my IIS hosted application over LAN. First I installed a DNS server. The DNS configuration steps are: Go to DNS Manager - right click on System Name - click on configure a DNS Server. DNS Server wizard open -, click on next button - Select radio button "forward lookup zone" click on next button. In the second window. click on radio button "The server maintains the zone" and then click next. Give the zone name "example.com" Click on radio button, "Do Not allow dynamic updates". and then click next button. In the next window, click on radio button "No it should not forward query" and then click next button. Complete the configure a DNS server wizard and then click on finish button. After it is managing the DNS records: In DNS server wizard. open tree of forward lookup zone and right click on the new zone name "example.com" - properties and click on "Start of authority" and write values on text boxes serial number=1 primary server=systemname.domainname responsible person=hostmaster.domainname Click on server name, highlight domain name, click on edit button and enter IP address of the server where I host my application. Highlight new zone name and right click on it and click "New Host" option. In this window there are three text boxes: Name(user parent name if blank)=scoring Fully Qualified Domain Name=scoring.example.com IP Address= My IP Address and check on "Create associated pointer(PTR) record" and click on "Add Host" Host button and then click done button. I have host header for my application is "scoring" on port 80 and its working fine on server my application setting are I have change its, Advance setting --> Application Pool Identity --> Local System application can access on server with host name "scoring" but it can not access on machines on LAN. When I change LAN machine host file that is under, C:/windows/system32/driver/etc/host and edit it and enter host name with hosted machine IP like this: scoring 192.168.1.20 By making these changes I can run the application over LAN machines as I mentioned above DNS setting by which I can run App over LAN with out editing the client's host file. What mistake am I doing in this configuration?

• Outlook 2010 exchange setup prompts for [email protected] rather than [email protected]

  We use a hosted exchange service. When users want to set up Outlook 2010 to access their account, they open Outlook and run through the configuration steps. Autodiscover is enabled, and in the user's active directory profile, their email address is in the email field. However, when the configuration process reaches a point where they are prompted for their email account's username and password, their active directory username is filled in by default instead of their email address. Is there a way to fix that? Users get confused and try to enter their email password over and over again and wonder why it doesn't work (and completely miss/ignore the "use another account" button even though they have instructions right in front of them). I'm also using the Office 2010 ADM's in group policy, but I haven't yet seen an option to specify what gets auto-populated in that windows security prompt.

  The Postfix MTA consists of several components/services that work together to perform the different stages of delivery and receipt of mail; these include the smtp daemon, the pickup and cleanup processes, the queue manager, the smtp service, pipe/spawn/virtual/rewrite ... and others (including the possibility of custom components). Postfix also provides several types of hooks that allow it to integrate with external software, such as policy servers, filters, bounce handlers, loggers, and authentication mechanisms; these hooks can be connected to different components/stages of the delivery process, and can communicate via (at least) IPC, network, database, several types of flat files, or a predefined protocol (e.g. milter). An old and very limited example of this is shown at this page. My question: Does anyone have access to a resource that describes these hooks, the components/delivery stages that the hook can interact with, and the supported communication methods? Or, more likely, documentation of the various Postfix components and the hooks/methods that they support? For example: Given the requirement "if the recipient primary MX server matches 'shadysmtpd', check the recipient address against a list; if there is a match, terminate the SMTP connection without notice". My software would need to 1) integrate into the proper part of the SMTP process, 2) use some method to perform the address check (TCP map server? regular expressions? mysql?), and 3) implement the required action (connection termination). Additionally, there will probably be several methods to accomplish this, and another requirement would be to find that which best fits (ex: a network server might be faster than a flat-file lookup; or, if a large volume of mail might be affected by this check, it should be performed as early in the mail process as possible). Real-world example: The apolicy policy server (performs checks on addresses according to user-defined rules) is designed as a standalone TCP server that hooks into Postfix inside the smtpd component via the directive 'check_policy_service inet:127.0.0.1:10001' in the 'smtpd_client_restrictions' configuration option. This means that, when Postfix first receives an item of mail to be delivered, it will create a TCP connection to the policy server address:port for the purpose of determining if the client is allowed to send mail from this server (in addition to whatever other restrictions / restriction lookup methods are defined in that option); the proper action will be taken based on the server's response.   I am developing an application which uses embedded tomcat server 7, and deploys a web application on embedded server. My application accesses the embedded webapp through Rest APIs, but my clients are getting Connection Timed Out exceptions and port is also not blocked. I never gets this exception when I install this application on my local machine. Some points: IP address is used in the host name part (They are able to access this IP address on other port) Port is not blocked We are using Apache HttpClient library to access the URL Timeout interval seems not to be an issue. What are the possible reasons for this exception Connection Timed Out? or How can I simulate this problem on my local machine? Any pointers would be helpful.

  I'm in the process of setting up a VM environment for a MS certification exam (70-462). Following the training kit's instructions, I've set up a domain controller (DC) and two members (SQL-A, SQL-B) thus far. I can't figure out why I can't join the domain. DC IPv4 Address . . . : 10.10.10.10(Preferred) Subnet Mask. . . . : 255.0.0.0 DNS Servers. . . . : ::1 127.0.0.1 SQL-A IPv4 Address . . . : 10.10.10.20(Preferred) Subnet Mask. . . . : 255.0.0.0 DNS Servers. . . . : 10.10.10.10 SQL-B IPv4 Address . . . : 10.10.10.30(Preferred) Subnet Mask. . . . : 255.0.0.0 DNS Servers. . . . : 10.10.10.10 I've read how to do networking between virtual machines in virtualbox and the documentation. After trying various network adapter configurations, I can't get them to communicate in order to have the two members join the domain. If both Ip addresses point to the same server, it does not help? I mean each server has own Ip address. If one server down, then visitors can access website (files) on another server? Is this the reason why need more than one Ip? Tried to point website to 2 ip addresses and after some time get warning from uptimerobot Connection Timeout

• VPN Connected, How to browse files? Windows Vista

  I am trying to establish a VPN connection to a server in my office from my laptop at home. I tried some of the steps as mentioned here: Connect to a network Connect to a workplace Use my Internet Connection (VPN) Then type server IP address and then my username & password. After creating a VPN connection, I can see I am connected to it. Now I want to browse files on the server. But I have no clue where I should look for them. I was thinking more of a simple step, like, Windows Run > Type ip address > \\124.345.678.900, then a prompt asking username and password, and finally a window opens to view the files. I tried to google it, but still unable to view files. Please help. Update: I didn't mention that when I try to connect to server via \\124.345.678.900 I get 0x80070043 error message.

• MBP Bluetooth PAN connection with iPhone 4

  I am trying to share MBP(OSX 10.8.3) internet connection with iPhone 4 (iOS 6) using Bluetooth PAN(Personal Area Network). Problem is Bluetooth PAN is not getting an ip address. I have tried to renew DHCP lease but nothing works. When I give a Manual IP address, the Bluetooth PAN goes green but doesn't shows the connection in iPhone. Is it possible to share the internet connection via Bluetooth. Note: I don't want to create an Ad-hoc connection over wifi.

  Eighteen months into my time as a PASS Director I’m especially proud of what the Virtual Chapters have accomplished and want to share that progress with you. I'm also pleased that the organization has invested more resources to support the VCs. In this quarter I got to attend two conferences and meet more members of the SQL community. Virtual Chapters In the first six months of 2013 VCs have hosted more than 50 webinars, offering free technical education to over 6200 attendees. This is a great benefit to PASS members; thanks to the VC leaders, volunteers and speakers who contribute their time to produce these events. The Performance VC held their “Summer Performance Palooza”, an event featuring eight back-to-back sessions. Links to the session recordings can be found on the VCs web site. The new webinar platform, GoToWebinar, has been rolled out to all the VCs. This is a more stable, scalable platform and represents an important investment into the future of the VCs. A few new VCs are in the planning stages, including one focused on Security and one for Russian speakers. Visit the Virtual Chapter home page to sign up for the chapters that interest you. After Chicago the Board had several serious discussions about the lessons learned from this seven and what we should do next. I’m very pleased the next event will be in San Jose, CA, the heart of Silicon Valley, a place where a great deal of investment and innovation in data analytics is taking place. Global SQL Community Over the last couple of years PASS has been taking steps to become more relevant to SQL communities in different parts of the world. In May I had the opportunity to attend SQL Bits XI in Nottingham, England. It was enlightening to meet and talk with SQL professionals from around the U.K. as well as many other European countries. The many SQL Bits volunteers put on a great event and were gracious hosts. Budgets The Board passed the FY14 budget at the end of June. The  budget process can be challenging and requires the Board to make some difficult choices about where to allocate resources. Overall I’m satisfied with the decisions we made and think we are investing in the right activities and programs. Next Up The Board is meeting July 18-19 in Kansas City. We will be holding the Executive Committee election for the Exec Co that will take office in 2014. We will also be discussing plans for the next BA conference as well as the next steps for our Global Growth initiative. Applications for the upcoming Board of Directors election open on July 24. • What is your most preferred method of site pagination?

  There seem to be quite a few implementations of this feature. Some sites like like Stackexchange have it laid out like this: [1][2][3][4][5] ... [954][Next] Other sites like game forums may have something like this: [1][2][3] ... [10] ... [50] ... [500] ... [954][Next] Some sites like webcomics (XKCD comes to mind) have it laid out like this: [Last][Prev][Random][Next][First] Reddit has a very simple pagination with only: [Prev][Next] Sites like Stackexchange and Google also allow you to change how many results you want per page. Personally, I have never used this feature. Is it even worth including or does it just further confuse the design with needless features? Personally, I have only ever seen the need for the webcomic style (without the random). If I need to go to a specific page (which is very, very rare) then I can just edit the address bar. Is it good design to make something more complex for rare occasions where it might make save the user some time? Is having to edit the address bar to navigate the site effectively in some circumstances bad design?

• I'm on Charter's email blacklist, how do I get removed?

  I am a programmer in a local government agency. I found out today when I got to work that Charter Internet has blacklisted us for our mailing list that we run. This list is used for communicating news and alerts for our residents. Does anyone have a phone # I can use to contact Charter about this? Normally the email approach is fine, but we have yet another snow storm coming and 75 of our customers won't be alerted to a snow emergency if we have one and may possibly be towed as a result.

• Run database checks but omit large tables or filegroups - New option in Ola Hallengren's Scripts

  One of the things I've always wanted in DBCC CHECKDB is the option to omit particular tables from the check. The situation that I often see is that companies with large databases often have only one or two very large tables. They want to run a DBCC CHECKDB on the database to check everything except those couple of tables due to time constraints. I posted a request on the Connect site about time some time ago: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/611164/dbcc-checkdb-omit-tables-option The workaround from the product team was that you could script out the checks that you did want to carry out, rather than omitting the ones that you didn't. I didn't overly like this as a workaround as clients often had a very large number of objects that they did want to check and only one or two that they didn't. I've always been impressed with the work that our buddy Ola Hallengren has done on his maintenance scripts. He pinged me recently about my old Connect item and said he was going to implement something similar. The good news is that it's available now.
