    Hello, This might seem an easy question for some, but I am struggling with it. I am trying to use SQLDataReader.GetFieldType to check if a certain field is an Image field. Lets assume the first field of the result set is an Image field, if I do: reader.GetFieldType(0).ToString; I get System.Byte[] But is this the correct way to check for it? I really don't like: if (reader.GetFieldType(0).ToString="System.Byte[]") Is there a better way? Thanks, AJ

  • Multiple rows with a single INSERT in SQLServer 2008

    I am testing the speed of inserting multiple rows with a single INSERT statement. For example: INSERT INTO [MyTable] VALUES (5, 'dog'), (6, 'cat'), (3, 'fish) This is very fast until I pass 50 rows on a single statement, then the speed drops significantly. Inserting 10000 rows with batches of 50 take 0.9 seconds. Inserting 10000 rows with batches of 51 take 5.7 seconds. My question has two parts: Why is there such a hard performance drop at 50? Can I rely on this behavior and code my application to never send batches larger than 50? My tests were done in c++ and ADO.

  • Database warehoue design: fact tables and dimension tables

    I am building a poor man's data warehouse using a RDBMS. I have identified the key 'attributes' to be recorded as: sex (true/false) demographic classification (A, B, C etc) place of birth date of birth weight (recorded daily): The fact that is being recorded My requirements are to be able to run 'OLAP' queries that allow me to: 'slice and dice' 'drill up/down' the data and generally, be able to view the data from different perspectives After reading up on this topic area, the general consensus seems to be that this is best implemented using dimension tables rather than normalized tables. Assuming that this assertion is true (i.e. the solution is best implemented using fact and dimension tables), I would like to see some help in the design of these tables. 'Natural' (or obvious) dimensions are: Date dimension Geographical location Which have hierarchical attributes. However, I am struggling with how to model the following fields: sex (true/false) demographic classification (A, B, C etc) The reason I am struggling with these fields is that: They have no obvious hierarchical attributes which will aid aggregation (AFAIA) - which suggest they should be in a fact table They are mostly static or very rarely change - which suggests they should be in a dimension table. Maybe the heuristic I am using above is too crude? I will give some examples on the type of analysis I would like to carryout on the data warehouse - hopefully that will clarify things further. I would like to aggregate and analyze the data by sex and demographic classification - e.g. answer questions like: How does male and female weights compare across different demographic classifications? Which demographic classification (male AND female), show the most increase in weight this quarter. etc. Can anyone clarify whether sex and demographic classification are part of the fact table, or whether they are (as I suspect) dimension tables.? Also assuming they are dimension tables, could someone elaborate on the table structures (i.e. the fields)? The 'obvious' schema: CREATE TABLE sex_type (is_male int); CREATE TABLE demographic_category (id int, name varchar(4)); may not be the correct one.

    I'm using the Details View control of VWD asp.net 2008 I have a users database table and one of the columns contain the "unique" user's profile ID, created by VWD from the automatic profiles table. From my table, I would like to select only the data pertaining to the logged in user. How do I get the current unique user profileID and then have that used for the query? What I have so far: In the configure data source option of the control I select the columns I would like to display, select the check box for "Return Only Unique IDs" and the WHERE option. In this new window I select the Column to the profile userID ... "=" and then assumed I should select Source: "Profile". Now what should the parameter properties or value be to select only the logged userID specific data of the table? Any help is appreciated. Thank You!

    How to create reasonable expression to store password in database using Doctrine and Zend_Auth::setCredentialTreatment()? I don't want to use md5() and the code must be portable, and with salt. I would call this not easy one to guess: setCredentialTreatment("SHA1(CONCAT(username, SHA1(CONCAT(username, ?)))"); but it is not portable to all databases. Seems that Doctrine_Expression has only md5 expression portability.

    I have an entity context that includes three tables (see diagram here). The first is a table that contain products, the second contains recipes. The joining table has fields for IDs in both the products and recipes table as well as a 'bit' field called 'featured'. My question is, how do I connect the field set_of_bads to set_it_belongs_to in the bads table. This way if I want to get the entire set of data that is set1 by calling on the reports table I can do it. Example: hey reports table.. bring up the row that has the report_id 123. Okay thank you.. Now get all the rows from bads that has the set_of_bads value from the row with the report_id 123. Thanks.

    Hey all I am going through the pain stacking process of sorting out someone else code. So I am decided to recreate a new database to sit alongside the old one then to use triggers to transfer data between both tables. Now I have an issue with a it looping IE A trigger on each table to update the other. Once one updates it should update the other but as both tables have triggers it just will loop which will cause an issue. Is their a way to stop this from happening ? Hope this makes sense and hope you can advise.

  • Validate Linq2Sql before SubmitChanges()

    Can anyone tell me if/how you can validate the changes in a data context in Linq2Sql before calling SubmitChanges(). The situation I have is that I create a context, perform multiple operations and add many inserts alongside other processing tasks and then rollback if the submit fails. What I'd prefer to do is make some kind of "Validate()" call after certain tasks are done so that I can handle it before submitting the entire job.

Despite much SO'ing and Googling I'm unclear how I should be storing them in the database (SQL2005) - the code below shows the basics of how I'm creating the hash as a string and I'm currently inserting it into the database into a Char(88) column as that seems to be the length created consistently Is holding it as a String the best way to do it, if so will it always be 88 chars on a SHA512 (as I have seen some bizarre stuff on Google)?     I have the following criteria Database should be protected with a username and password. It should not be possible to copy the database file and use it else were like MS Access. There will be no central database server. Each machine will run their own database server locally and user will initiate synchronization. Concept is inspired from distributed version control system like Git. So it should have good replication support. Strong consistency is not needed. Users will synchronize each other database when they need. In case of conflicts it should be possible to find the conflict and present it (from application) to the user for fixing it. Revisions of data if available it will be good. e.g. Entire history of change to a invoice. I explored document oriented database and inclined towards the same. But I dont know what to choose. Database is small it will not reach even 1GB in the next few years (say 3 years). Please feel free to suggest any database which you think might be suitable. Any pointers is highly appreciated.   • [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified - works

    Hello, I am developing a java app (with odbc bridge - forgive me - the only paradox driver I have been able to obtain is the microsoft odbc driver) - which works fine while in eclipse, (and netbeans) - connecting and obtaining data from an ancient paradox 5.x database. So long as it is run from inside my IDE - it compiles and runs flawlessly. When I export it to a runable jar, suddenly [code][Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified[/code] occurs. The jar is being run on the same box as my developing IDE - so I am confused about the cause. It is being run via console from a user account, as per the IDE. My connection string is "jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Paradox Driver (*.db )};DriverID=538; Fil=Paradox 5.X; DefaultDir=C:\paradox\database\location\" - obtained from connectionstrings.com - and as mentioned before, working fine while run from the IDE. The above seems to 'magically' create its own connection, avoiding the setup of a dsn - I am unsure quite how it does - but it works. The only other thing I can think that might be pertinent is that my PC is a 64bit o/s (windows server 2008). Please help, any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matt
