    Hi all, I have worked for various web projects but correct date time localization have not been done and considered throroughly so I want to ask this very typical problem here and I want to hear comments from expert in this problem What is the correct strategy for storing a date/time value from client from server As I understand, because of locale and timezone so we have to do the conversion, I have heard about GMT or UTC time and after do some search it seems that UTC is more accurate ? so we will convert from client time - UTC+0 when saving and when we read the value from server to client, we convert from server time back to client time again ? However, I see in some website, at the bottom have the sentence "All times are in UTC", "All times are in GMT" and also "All times are in your local time". So maybe not all the sites do the convertion back and forth ? And in that case the user has to manually do the date/time conversion ? How to display the date/time convenient to user based on his locale and region How to provide personalization on date/time value ? I had one time depends on vbscript to do the display and the format is read from windows regional and format settings automatically. But without vbscript how can we determine a date/time pattern for a user of a specific locale. Do we have to store a mapping between a locale and pattern somewhere and do the conversion at the server side ? Although date/time conversion is needed in most case, there's situation where only date matter for example if my birthday is 2 Feb 1980, it should be the same for all locale and no conversion should be done. How can we address this issue.

    Hi, The company I am working now has developed a Rule-based Expert System. It is a web-based system and supports Flow Chart, Decision Table, Fuzzy Rules and Forward Chaining Rules. It is something like iLog but less complex and powerful. However, one serious problem we are facing now is that we have NO CUSTOMER so far. We have spent 4 yrs to develop that product. Because my company is a start-up and has no reference, no one is confident in our product. Without feedback, we cannot improve our product. I am wondering if we should change our product into SAAS and make it free for people to try, or it has NO MARKET at all. (I will lose my job then..) Please give me some suggestions. Many Thanks!

    Hi, I currently have to develop a system very similar to MIT's Scratch's UI. In case you don't know it, here a screenshot: http://kidconfidence.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/scratch1.png Basically you have bricks in the library on the left you can drop into the window on the right side. The problem I have is that I'm new to Cocoa and not sure what would be the best way to accomplish that. Because you can nest these bricks sometimes and other times stick them together I wonder if there is something that would help implementing that. I recognize this is not a very common interface that there are probably no implementations of that around, but maybe there are helpers for parts of this. Regards, Armin

  • Best Practice - Validating Input In Simple GUI Application?

    I'm writing a GUI app with wxwidgets in C++ for one of my programming classes. We have to validate input and throw custom exceptions if it doesn't meet certain conditions. My question is, what is best practice when it comes to this? Should I write a seperate function that checks for errors, and have my event handler's call that function? Or should I do my error-checking in my event handlers? Or does it really matter? Thanks!

    Hi Guyz, i want to integrate maps using map kit in iphone, and i am successful at that, but now the problem which i am facing is i have 2 locations coordinates, Location1 and Location2, now i want those two points to be shown on map but i want that they appear on the screen both at 1 time, means if they are very far then the zoom level goes to that point and show those two points on the map, if they are near to each other then zoom level shows from that angel (i mean very near). now i know that using longitude delta and latitude delta i can fix this problem, but i cant find a way to make it dynamic, so that i dont have to hardcode the delta value Any Help appreciated.     I'm learning to apply MVP to a simple WinForms app (only one form) in C# and encountered an issue while creating the main presenter in static void Main(). Is it a good idea to expose a View from the Presenter in order to supply it as a parameter to Application.Run()? Currently, I've implemented an approach which allows me to not expose the View as a property of Presenter: static void Main() { IView view = new View(); Model model = new Model(); Presenter presenter = new Presenter(view, model); presenter.Start(); Application.Run(); } The Start and Stop methods in Presenter: public void Start() { view.Start(); } public void Stop() { view.Stop(); } The Start and Stop methods in View (a Windows Form): public void Start() { this.Show(); } public void Stop() { // only way to close a message loop called // via Application.Run(); without a Form parameter Application.Exit(); } The Application.Exit() call seems like an inelegant way to close the Form (and the application). The other alternative would be to expose the View as a public property of the Presenter in order to call Application.Run() with a Form parameter. static void Main() { IView view = new View(); Model model = new Model(); Presenter presenter = new Presenter(view, model); Application.Run(presenter.View); } The Start and Stop methods in Presenter remain the same. An additional property is added to return the View as a Form: public void Start() { view.Start(); } public void Stop() { view.Stop(); } // New property to return view as a Form for Application.Run(Form form); public System.Windows.Form View { get { return view as Form(); } } The Start and Stop methods in View (a Windows Form) would then be written as below: public void Start() { this.Show(); } public void Stop() { this.Close(); } Could anyone suggest which is the better approach and why?     I have a service that regularly queries a web server for new messages. The service stores the new messages in an arrayList. These messages are implemented using a custom class, storing all kinds of metadata (strings and longs). An activity then connects to this service to retrieve those messages and display them to the user. I have an .aidl file that describes the interface that the service exposes. package com.example.package; interface MyInterface { List<Message> getMessages(); } The Message class extends the Parcelable class which should allow for the IPC transfer. The problem is this: Eclipse gives me an error saying that the type of List<Message> is unknown. Any imports are marked as invalid. Ideas? Thanks

    Hi, I'm working on a online quiz client where we use a dedicated custom-made linux distro which contains only the quiz client software along with text editors and other utility software. When the user has started the quiz, I want to prevent him/her from minimizing the window/closing it/switching to the desktop or other windows. The quizzes can be attempted using only the mouse, so I need the keyboard to be completed disabled for the period of the quiz. How could I do this, using Qt or Mono?   • How can I receive CameraActivities result in a DIFFERENT Activity (i.e. not in the launching one)?

    Hi, I hope the title says it all: I've got Activity A which fires up the Camera intent via: Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE); startActivityForResult(intent, REQUEST_CAMERA); After the picture is taken I can easily grab the picture in: @Override protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) But I'd like to receive the result in Activity B in which the image can be edited. Right now I'm receiving the result in Activity A and pass it over to Activity B which results in showing the GUI of Activity A for a short while: Intent i = new Intent().setAction("DisplayJPEG"); i.setClass(this, EditImageActivity.class); i.putExtra("IMAGE_URI", uri); startActivityForResult(i, REQUEST_EDIT_IMAGE); Of course, I will need the result from Activity B in Activity A after the image has been edited. But that should work with: setResult(resultCode, data); So there has to be a way to do what I need. Please point me into the right direction. Thanks in advance, steff

    I have this code that has one button that let's me choose an entry from contacts, and passes that choesn contact to onActivityResult function. My question is how do I select data of that single contact when all that is passed is an Intent in data variable. That data variable, if converted to string shows something like "dat: content://contacts/people/4" so I see that selected contact is somehow passed, but what now? How to get that data? And also all I found by googling was examples with deprecated class People, so I don't know how too use new classes. Please help.     Hi, I have a MapView with an ItemizedOverlay and a bunch of OverlayItem:s. When an OverlayItem is tapped on custom layout balloon is displayed on MapView. I can add a close button that hides the balloon layout. But how can I close the balloon if the user tap:s on the map outside the balloon? I have an OnTouchListener on the MapView, but how can I from this localize the open balloon layout and hide it? /P
