• The Fantastic New WebLogic on Oracle Database Appliance 2.9 Release is Here!

  Last week was a big day in virtualised ODA-land as it saw the launch of WebLogic on ODA 2.9. Admittedly it doesn't sound like a very exciting release but it is one that we at O-box have been looking forward to for quite some time. Let me explain why, then we'll look into the details... The ODA X4-2 has 48 Intel Xeon cores. That is a lot of compute power. Whilst the largest O-box SOA Appliance single environment configuration can in theory use all those cores (currently with 40 vCPU of SOA!) the vast majority of O-box users will want smaller configurations. Prior to 2.9 the Oracle WebLogic implementation only supported one domain per ODA, so the conundrum O-box development faced last year was either: offer customers only one SOA environment on their O-box for now (but have the benefit of a standard, easily supportable WebLogic installation), or build our own WebLogic/OTD OVM templates from scratch. One of our driving goals with O-box is to give the best possible experience and make the appliance as supportable as possible. Therefore we took the gamble that we would stick with the Oracle's one-domain WebLogic configuration initially, and just hope that it would deliver multi-domain support for us in a timely manner (note: this is probably not a strategy that business textbooks would recommend!). Anyway, we've been working closely with Oracle Product Management for a few months now and I'm delighted to see 2.9 as the fruits of their labour. This also neatly ties in with several recent requests for O-box to include OSB as well as SOA/BPEL (which we have always wanted to have in separate domains). • Why does everybody hate SharePoint?

  Reading this topic about the most over hyped technologies I noticed that SharePoint is almost universally reviled. My experience with SharePoint (especially the most recent versions) is that it accomplishes it's core competencies smartly. Namely: Centralized document repository - get all those office documents out of email (with versioning) User-editible content creation for internal information disemination - look, an HR site with current phone numbers and the vacation policy Project collaboration - a couple clicks creates a site with a project's documents, task list, simple schedule, threaded discussion, and possibly a list of all project related emails. Very basic business automation - when you fill out the vacation form, an email is sent to HR. My experience is that SharePoint only gets really ugly when an organization tries to push it in a direction it isn't designed for. SharePoint is not a CRM, ERP, bug database or external website. SharePoint is flexible enough to serve in a pinch, but it is no replacement for a dedicated tool. (Microsoft is just as guilty of pushing SharePoint into domains it doesn't belong.) If you use SharePoint for what it's designed for, it really does work. Thoughts?

• Should I Use PHP as FastCGI?

  Hi, I am running an Apache webserver on my Windows machine. It is not generally a public server (most of the little bit of traffic comes from the machine itself, and most of the public traffic comes from crawlers). Basically, it is mostly just for use as a test-bed, development system. I have read about how running PHP as FastCGI is better (ie faster and more stable) than as an Apache module. However, I really don’t like the idea of multiple PHP.exe processes (I don’t like that Apache has two processes and I’m not even too thrilled with Chromium’s multi-process model). So I’m wondering if it would be worthwhile to change PHP to FastCGI for this scenario. If it is, how would I configure it? Pretty much all of the information I have seen has been either for non-Windows or for IIS. As I said, I’m running Windows+Apache. Thanks a lot.

  How many of us have been forced to select one technology over another when designing a new system? What factors do we and should we consider? How can we ensure the correct business decision is made? • "Sent on behalf" not appearing when delegates sending mails

  Ringo is a delegate of Paul's mailbox in Exchange, but when Ringo sends mail from Paul's mailbox, the recipient sees "Paul" in the sender field, rather than "Paul Sent On Behalf Of Ringo" Paul has set "Editor" permissions for Ringo to his mailbox, and Ringo has been granted "Send on behalf of" permissions in Exchange. Ringo did at one time have "Send As" permissions for Paul's mailbox in Exchange, but this has since been removed. This is also the case for all other delegates to Paul's mailbox. How do I make it so that emails sent by Paul's delegates show the "Sent On Behalf Of" information in the Sender field? Using Exchange Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2007

• What are the effects of the L root server now publishing DURZ?

  I'm curious what the actual effects of the L root server publishing DURZ today will be. On the nanog mailing list, someone said it's important to evaluate the systemic effects of root name servers publishing signed zones, even when not using DNSSEC. Meanwhile, RIPE's own published information on their changes to the K root server say there's no issue if your resolvers don't use DNSSEC. Can someone please clear this up? DNSSEC seems to be a messy, tangled web. If not enabling DNSSEC on my resolvers, do I have anything to worry about with the upcoming changes to the root servers?

• Num Lock of laptop working strangely [Dell Vostro 1710]

  My laptop model is Dell Vostro 17" and it has numeric keypad. The problem is that its Num Lock key works very strange. Sometimes when I press it the information led of Num Lock activates, but sometimes when I try to activate numeric keypad it refuses and this led doesn't activate and therefore numeric keypad doesn't work at all. Does it mean that I need to change my keyboard at all? In addition Esc key doesn't work for a long time. I think the main reason for that is my son (2year old) who started playing with my laptop from his 1st year. If I need to change the keyboard where can I buy it for a good price, because in Dell I think when I called them 2-3 months ago they offered me keyboard for about more then 50Euros. Currently I live in Spain. Thanks.

• Weird behaviour with OpenVPN: can not connect to a few websites

  My OpenVPN server is Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS and openvpn version is 2.x My client is on Win 7. He can access most sites but not Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, groups.google.com, etc My server.conf is: local x.x.x.x port 1194 proto udp dev tun ca /etc/openvpn/keys/ca.crt cert /etc/openvpn/keys/server.crt key /etc/openvpn/keys/server.key dh /etc/openvpn/keys/dh1024.pem server 10.8.0.0 255.255.255.0 push "redirect-gateway def1" push "dhcp-option DNS 8.8.8.8" client-to-client keepalive 10 120 comp-lzo persist-key persist-tun status /etc/openvpn/keys/openvpn-status.log verb 4 I can access Youtube etc using SSH Tunnel + SOCKS Proxy, and the Ubuntu server can access all sites. so nothing is wrong with the Ubuntu server. With little information I can provide, I am not looking for a quck solution. How can I debug?

• MySQL works with straight php, but not in phpMyAdmin or in Drupal

  I just updated from PHP 5.1 to 5.2 and both drupal and phpMyAdmin stopped being able to save information. I've checked the mysql user permissions - they look ok. I wrote some simple php to insert a row into a table, and it works, but if I try to do the same thing in phpMyAdmin, it just says "no change". phpMyAdmin will delete rows, select rows, but not insert or update them. Drupal does the same thing - it will select info from the tables ok, but not insert or update (or delete). Any ideas? I'm really starting to get desperate! Cheers, Marek

  I just migrated a development workstation FROM: Windows XP Pro SP3 with IIS 6 TO: Vista Enterprise 64bit with IIS 7 Since the move, one of my pages that accesses an SQL Server 2000 database is receiving the following error from my ASP.NET 2.0 web page: "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'." I have: enabled Windows Authentication in IIS and web.config disabled Anonymous Authentication in IIS set up Impersonation to run as the authenticated user verified that the logged in user (in this case, me) has access to the appropriate database on the SQL Server verified that my login and impersonation information is correct in the ASP.NET page by checking User.Identity.Name and System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name (both display my username) My connection string using SqlConnection is "Server={SERVER_NAME};Database={DB_NAME};Integrated Security=SSPI;Trusted_Connection=True;" Why is it trying to login with NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGIN? I have to assume it's some setting or web.config entry specific to IIS7 since it worked fine before the migration. NOTE: The SQL Server is Windows authentication only - no mixed mode or SQL only.

On opening the contact on my desktop, I was surprised to see, I need to upgrade my account to view the contact. Doing some research along with my wife, I found this simple security vulnerability from LinkedIn that can let anyone view a contact’s full profile even when you have a “not upgraded” LinkedIn account and that the contact is a “3rd + Everyone Else”. Here’s an example of what I am talking about. I just made a random search on LinkedIn for a contact whose name starts with Sacha. Do note, this is just a walkthrough and I am not publicizing any Sacha. I check the “3rd + Everyone Else” and find a “LinkedIn Member”. On clicking this person’s profile to view, I am presented with the following page, asking me to upgrade. Make a note of this page’s web address and you get the profile id from it. For example, for this contact, the page address is: http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=868XXX35 The Profile Id for this contact is 868XXX35. Now, open following page where the Profile Id is the same as the one we grabbed a moment earlier. https://touch.www.linkedin.com/?#profile/868XXX35 The mobile page exposes this contact information and you even get the possibility to connect to this person without an introduction mail (InMail). I hope someone from LinkedIn sees and issues a fix for this. I am pretty sure, it’s something that they don’t want the user to do without purchasing an upgrade package.

• View another persons calendar details in Outlook 2010

  I know how to view somebody else's calendar - there are 100 walk-throughs like this one on Google. However, this feature has changed in Outlook 2010, and you no longer get prompted for rights to view another person's calendar, and Outlook just displays their "Free/Busy" information, which doesn't help me. I'd like to request permissions to view the details of their appointments, but I can't find any place to request permissions on their calendar - Outlook 2010 just gives me "Free/Busy" rights and then appears to have no option to request additional rights. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

• Exchange can't send emails with attachments

  No one in our organization can send emails with attachments. Emails without attachments go through fine, but if an attachment is included, an error appears in the Server Failures folder under Sync Issues. The error is "The following message had an error and synchronization of it was skipped (0xc0090081)". We are using Symantec Mail Security, which we shut down to try to troubleshoot the problem, and now that fails to load. Any ideas as to what to check? I'm sorry I don't have more complete information, but I'm helping someone try to figure this out. I'm not the admin myself. Thanks.

• Writing to a D3DFMT_R32F render target clamps to 1

  I'm currently implementing a picking system. I render some objects in a frame buffer, which has a render target, which has the D3DFMT_R32F format. For each mesh, I set an integer constant evaluator, which is its material index. • Brother MFC-J470DW scan function "Check Connection"

  I have a Brother MFC-J470DW printer that I have connected to a Linux desktop (running Ubuntu 14.04) using a wireless router network. The printer works fine for printing and copying, but now I want to add the scan function. To set up the scan function, I went to the Brother web page for this printer: http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=eu_ot&lang=en&prod=mfcj470dw_us_eu_as&os=128 and under Scanner Drivers selected "Scanner driver 64bit (deb package)", "Scan-key-tool 64bit (deb package)", and "Scanner Setting file (deb package)". For each package, I clicked the EULA, and selected "open with Ubuntu Software Center". Then after the USC window pops up, I click on Install and the red line goes from left to right. In each case, the USC window then had a green checkmark and the Install box changes to Reinstall (that's how you know it worked). So now I try it out. Hitting the Scan button on the printer, selecting "Scan to file", and hitting ok produces the message "Check Connection". I checked the Brother Linux Information FAQ (scanner) page and the 14th question seems the same as mine: When I try to use the scan key on my network connected machine, I receive the error "Check connection" or I can not select anything except "scan to FTP". I explored the solution given for this FAQ, but found from ifconfig that I am already using eth0, the default setting, so presumably that is not the problem. I also found brscan-skey installed in /usr/bin and did drrm@drrmlinux2:~$ brscan-skey -t drrm@drrmlinux2:~$ brscan-skey but that didn't help - I still get the "Check connection" message. What can you suggest to fix this problem?

• Why is my wireless significantly slower on Ubuntu 12.04, as compared to windows 7?

  I'm dual booting 12.04, and Win7. Just a tiny bit of background, I'm starting to get more and more interested in programming and 3d modelling, so I'd like to learn more about ubuntu as a result of those interests. Still a complete newb though! Anyway, When downloading on windows, I get 1.5mb/s easy. Now I swap over to Ubuntu, and it hasn't topped 150 kb/s since I installed it some 6 months ago. I'd downloaded most of my programs on windows, so I never really noticed it, but as I'm committing to ubuntu more, it's starting to hinder me. I'm with Shaw, on their Highspeed 20, which gives me 20 mbps down, and 6mbps up. Speedtest.com shows me varying figures somewhat close to what shaw says they give on both windows and ubuntu, which is to be expected, given that it is shaw afterall... So, I don't know what you guys need to know, and I know even less about how to get it to you. Whatever information you guys need, tell me how to get it, how to get it up here, and i'll get it on here! I thought it might be that I'm using a proprietary driver, when an open sourced one would work better? But I really have no clue. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks guys!

• Better way to generate enemies of different sub-classes

  So lets pretend I have an enemy class that has some generic implementation and inheriting from it I have all the specific enemies of my game. How would I declare enemyTypes to hold the classes if so? Everything I have tried so far as generated compile errors and general frustration, but I figured I might ask here before I completely give up to the huge mass that is the createEveryEnemy() method. All the enemies do inherit from the Enemy class (which is what the enemy variable is declared as). Also is there a better way to check which type a particular enemy that is shorter than enemy.class.isAssignableFrom(Ninja.class)? I'd like to ditch the enums entirely if possible, since they seem repetitive when the class name itself holds that information.

• SQL2008 Won't Work After SP1 Install?

  I have SQL2008 installed on my Win2008 server, and its been working fine - I have sites running using SQL databases etc.. I thought I would install SQL2008 SP1, but after install I cannot connect to SQL via Management Studio, and in configuration manager I cannot start SQL? TITLE: Connect to Server Cannot connect to #MYINSTANCENAME#. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. • Visual Studio 2010 editor painfully slow

  I'm running out of patience with MS VisualStudio 2010: I'm working on a solution containing ~50 C++ projects. When using the editor, I experience a lag of 1 - 2 seconds whenever I move the cursor to a different line, or when I move to a different window, or generally when the editor losses and gains focus. I went through a whole series of optimizations, to no avail: installed all hotfixes for VS2010 disabled all add-ins and extensions disabled Intellisense deleted all temporary files created by VS2010 disabled hardware acceleration unloaded all but 15 projects disabled tracking changes closed all but one window and so on. This is on a Dual Core machine with SSD harddrive (verified throughput 100MB/s), enough free space on HD, Windows 7 Pro 32-bit with 3GB of RAM and most of it still free. Whenever I type a letter, CPU usage of devenv.exe goes to 50 - 90% in process monitor for 1 - 2 seconds before returning to 5%. I used Process Explorer to analyze registry and file system access, and I only notice frequent accesses to the .sln file (which is quiet small), and a few registry reads, but nothing that would raise a red flag. I don't have this problem with solutions containing less projects, so I'm inclined to think that it's related to the number of projects. For your information, the entire solution has been migrated over the years from VS2005 to VS2008 to now VS2010. Does anyone have any ideas what else I could do to resume work on this project, other than returning to VS2008?

• Understanding Service Compensation part of Industrial SOA series

  Some of the most important SOA design patterns that we have successfully applied in projects will be described in this article. These include the Compensation pattern and the UI mediator pattern, the Common Data Format pattern and the Data Access pattern. All of these patterns are included in Thomas Erl's book, "SOA Design Patterns", and are presented here in detail, together with our practical experiences. We begin our "best of" SOA pattern collection with the Compensation pattern. Compensation is required in error situations in an SOA, as multiple atomic service operations cannot generally be linked with classic transactions this would violate the principle of loose coupling. An error situation of this sort will occur, particularly if service operations are combined into processes or new services during orchestration or by applying the Composite pattern, and the transaction bracket has to be expanded as a result. We need mechanisms to undo the effects of individual services (the status changes in the overall system) and to ensure that a consistent system state is maintained at all times, so as to preserve system integrity. • More Tables or More Databases?

  I got an e-mail from someone that has an interesting situation. He has 15,000 customers, and he asks if he should have a database for their data per customer. Without a LOT more data it’s impossible to say, of course, but there are some general concepts to keep in mind. Whenever you’re segmenting data, it’s all about boundary choices. You have not only boundaries around how big the data will get, but things like how many objects (tables, stored procedures and so on) that will be involved, if there are any cross-sections of data (do they share location or product information) and – very important – what are the security requirements? From the answer to these types of questions, you now have the choice of making multiple tables in a single database, or using multiple databases. A database carries some overhead – it needs a certain amount of memory for locking and so on. But it has a very clean boundary – everything from objects to security can be kept apart. Having multiple users in the same database is possible as well, using things like a Schema. But keeping 15,000 schemas can be challenging as well. My recommendation in complex situations like this is similar to a post on decisions that I did earlier – I lay out the choices on a spreadsheet in rows, and then my requirements at the top in the columns. I  give each choice a number based on how well it meets each requirement. At the end, the highest number wins. And many times it’s a mix – perhaps this person could segment customers into larger regions or districts or products, in a database. Within that database might be multiple schemas for the customers. • Heartbeat won't start up from a cold boot when a failed node is present

  I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. Let's say one node is down... The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps cross over cable on eth1 and have access to a IP camera LAN on eth0 The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource. I have to manually restart heartbeat by "sudo service heartbeat restart" to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start?
