• Surround in Windows 7 with Soundmax

  Hey guys, I have a asus m2n motherboard with a Soundmax 1988 chip on it. I want to have surround sound in windows 7, but i cant get it to work. I tried a lot of different drivers, including the latest beta for Win 7. The problem is that when I configure the speakers and i do a "Test" all speakers work. But whenever I want to play some video or mp3, only the front speakers work. In vista there was this option called "Surround Fill" that would fix this problem, however, I cant seem to find that in windows 7. (The enhancements tab is completely gone for the speakers, other output devices do have that tab). Anybody knows the fix? Edit: I got it now kind of working by using a trial version of SRS AudioSandbox. However, the quality is quite bad since the program tries to create a real 5.1 of stereo sound. I just want to have stereo over 4 speakers instead of fake 5.1 over 4 speakers.

• 100% uptime for a web application

  We received an interesting "requirement" from a client today. They want 100% uptime with off-site failover on a web application. From our web application's viewpoint, this isn't an issue. It was designed to be able to scale out across multiple database servers, etc. However, from a networking issue I just can't seem to figure out how to make it work. In a nutshell, the application will live on servers within the client's network. It is accessed by both internal and external people. They want us to maintain an off-site copy of the system that in the event of a serious failure at their premises would immediately pick up and take over. Now we know there is absolutely no way to resolve it for internal people (carrier pigeon?), but they want the external users to not even notice. Quite frankly, I haven't the foggiest idea of how this might be possible. It seems that if they lose Internet connectivity then we would have to do a DNS change to forward traffic to the external machines... Which, of course, takes time. Ideas? UPDATE I had a discussion with the client today and they clarified on the issue. They stuck by the 100% number, saying the application should stay active even in the event of a flood. However, that requirement only kicks in if we host it for them. They said they would handle the uptime requirement if the application lives entirely on their servers. You can guess my response.

• Serious 64-bit laptop

  For the past couple of years, I have been using an IBM Thinkpad T60p for daily work (software development, desktop & embedded). I am extremely satisfied with this machine, due to its robustness. It also has a few features I depend on: a high resolution display: 15.0" TFT FlexView display with 1600x1200 (UXGA); excellent keyboard; decent graphics and CPU performance. Some of the software I develop benefits from larger amounts of RAM, and 3GB (Windows 7 32-bit) or 4GB (Windows 7 64-bit on T60p) are no longer sufficient. My customers run desktop computers with 20GB and more, and I need to have at least 8GB to at least be able to run reasonable test cases. So I'm shopping around for a new laptop, but I'm struggling to find anything that matches my requirements: must run Windows 7 64-bit Pro or higher; must support at least 8GB of RAM (more is better) high screen resolution! While I prefer 4:3 I can live with wide screen. But I really hope to find something with a vertical screen resolution similar to what I have now... portable, so < 16" but = 14" I realize that FlexView isn't available anymore, but I'd like to avoid a glossy screen if possible. decent (not more) graphics performance, ideally hybrid (I'm doing a lot of CAD, never games). good keyboard reasonable CPU -- but I'm still fine with my current Core 2 Duo, so that shouldn't be too complicated. The T60p fits all those requirements, except the 8GB of RAM. Can you help me find a current notebook that would match most of them? I don't mind changing brand. Thanks!

• Boot records messed on dual boot (win7 and ubuntu) machine with SSD and HDD

  i have a lenovo ideapad y570 with two hard drives: SSD and normal HDD both managed by RapidDrive and windows 7 pre-installed. First, i have shrunk my 500 GB HDD a little bit to make some place for a linux installation. Then i installed linux mint 12 to it, also installed grub onto the drive (dev/sdb). Installation programm has not allowed me to install grub on sda. Then i replaced linux mint with ubuntu 12.04 but installed grub onto the SSD (which is dev/sda and was the default-option). After that i could boot into my windows, only ubuntu worked. So i did a research, and tried: rewriting mbr of windows into sda1, reinstalling grub, replacing grub2 with grub-legacy, and now i think my partitions table are totally messed. If i boot from the SSD, it throws some mbr error and wont boot, if i boot from the HDD, i only get the grub bash. How do i restore the partition tables? I can boot only from a live-cd at the machine. • Dosbox USB print Windows 8.1 64Bit

  Worked fine until I've upgraded to Windows 8.1 as well as made the mail programm working (had to get a windows live ID and have to type in a password now, when starting Windows). I did set the USB printer to lpt1 on the local Windows 8 computer and another XP computer via LAN to lpt2 the same way with the same printer on the Windows 8 computer. But now it doesn't work anymore from the Win8 one (where the printer is plugged via USB). Tried already deleting lpt2: on the XP one, as well as lpt1 on the Windows 8, resetted it. Not working... :-( I tried also net use lpt1: \server\printer password "\user:Ute Berger" /persistent:yes of course with the correct server and shared printer name as well as net use \server\printer "\user:Ute Berger" password /persistent:yes . This is the name displayed as a user now. But in C:\users it is named Benutzer1. Tried this one also. Nothing worked. What could be the problem here? What's strange is that when I type "net use lpt1:" on the XP, I get another error (67 - The networkname wasn't found) than trying something I didn't set up like lpt2 (2 - The system can't find the file). Could this be a possible problem as even if deleted something is left blocking on the Windows 8 computer? Please help me - I tried for hours today but all I've got was frustration... Regards Tim

• External-Harddisk drive couldn't run unless in safe mode

  This is the strangest thing ever happened to me... I have an external harddisk drive (ext-HDD), bought around 2 years ago (don't know whether this is an important issue or not). Here, I have a video file (.avi) in my internal harddisk dive (HDD), it worked very well, then I copy it to my ext-HDD, but I couldn't run the file directly from my ext-HDD! I tried to copy it back to my HDD (from the ext-HDD), and now the copy couldn't be run on my HDD too. Remember that I copy the file, so the original one was still there. I tried to go to safe mode (forget to mention, I use Windows 7 Pro), and this is where the strange thing happened, the copied files (both in ext-HDD and HDD) can be run in this safe mode. So, my question is, what could actually be happened there? PS: My ext-HDD is Axioo, 250 GB, exFAT... Edited: Currently I used MacOSX, and the file in the harddisk still can't be run. I haven't tried safe mode for Mac (is there one?), but will try later (if there is)

• Change A Password

  I have a non-domain machine that I use with our company's domain resources over vpn regularly. I switched to Windows 8 (fresh install), and the "Change a password" option went away from the Ctrl-Alt-Del window. Can't seem to google anything about this subject, or find a way to access that password change dialog. I tried running the .reg file from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/63014-ctrl-alt-del-screen-add-remove-change-password.html with no luck. I also tried to Disable "Remove Change Password" via gpedit.msc. I could do it from my domain laptop, but I like to do it on this machine because it updates all my saved copies of those credentials. My local account is tied to my hotmail account if that matters. Updates: Administrator account. I apologize for stating this was an upgrade, it was a fresh install to a diff't drive. 64-bit Pro install. Bounty's almost up If someone can just confirm that the Change A Password... should or should not be present on a non-domain, Live tied, Win8 install, I'll be satisfied that I can or cannot expect to fix it.

• Windows disk change monitoring for malware analysis

  Not sure if this question belongs to here, because it has some relations with 'serverfault' (system backups) and 'stackoverflow' (software analysis). I'm looking for a solution to monitor disk changes on a Windows system and selectively revert them. It should be able to handle live files like registry parts, so may need to be an offline backup software. It shouldn't silently pass over files which the current admin user doesn't have permissions on (files with no permission entries or owned by the 'system' user) Registry change tracking would be a bonus but is not a requirement I use virtual machines for malware analysis, there is even no solution to list file changes in disk snapshot files (delta VMDK). I currently use Ashampoo for monitoring changes. Though it's the best one between similars, it's not a good software and hasn't really evolved in many 'platinum', 'deluxe' versions released in the last 10 years (it even used non-resizable windows until the latest version). The real problem is it misses some disk / registry changes. Perhaps it only compares modification dates and doesn't catch a change if the dates are preserved. So, I think the solution should compare files using hashes, or file sizes at least. There are numerous backup software out there and I'm sure one can handle this, offline or online.

• 3 Monitor PCI-e Graphics card on Linux (without tremendous pain)?

  As we are all painfully aware, the only way to get multiple monitors AND compositing (Compiz) on Linux is to use a single graphics card that can drive both (or in my case all three) screens. I bought a Radeon 5750 specifically because it claims to able to drive 3 monitors. I can plug in 3 monitors (2 DVI, 1 HDMI) and the Catalyst Control Center shows all 3, but only 2 can be enabled at a time. The exact message is: The current settings cannot be applied. Possible issues may include: - Display(s) cannot be enabled. - Setting(s) cannot be applied due to insufficient video memory. So I'm going to assume that either the 5750 doesn't support 3 monitors, OR, more likely, ATI couldn't be bothered to add that support to their Linux drivers. So this is a multipart question: First, can anyone suggest a PCI Express Graphics card that can run 3 screens on linux without tremendous pain? I'm looking for something where you install the driver and all three screens "just work". Does such a card exist? Second, if you have a 5750, have you been able to get it to do 3 monitors? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 at the moment.

• Scaling a LAMP website hosted on EC2

  Hello, I'm very new to all this - I've recently managed to launch my website on EC2. As next step, I want to learn how to scale the website. I have a general idea but wanted some input from the experts about how to go about it. My website is based on LAMP but also has Red5 server which allows users to record messages and also used for playing them back. Currently this is the architecture I'm planning to setup for initial scaling. Deploy four small EC2 instances for the following purposes: Instance-1: On this instance I will run the MySql database Instance-2: On this instance I will run the red5 server Instance-3 & Instance-4 These 2 instances will be used to deploy the website and will have Apache running on them. They will communicate with the mysql server on Instance-1 and red5 server on Instance-2 using the internal IP address. As an when required, I will launch another instance of the same EBS - I will have EBS of say 50 GIG where all the mysql data will be stored. Also red5 will use this EBS to store the video messages Load-Balancer - Use the load balancer provided by Amazon to load balance Instance-3 and Instance-4 This is what I have in mind. I could be way off so please bear with me. Also I have not taken into account the case of scaling MySql server as I currently have no idea about how that will be done and whether or not it is necessary initially. I am aware that Amazon provides auto scaling and mysql scaling as well but I dont want to get into that right now. Your feedback is appreciated Thanks

• Windows 7 breaks even in safe mode

  Hi, I have a Dell XPS M1730 with Windows 7 installed. I noticed last night that after a few hours of use, the fans kicked into full and I couldn't do anything without it taking forever. Minimising windows, opening device manager or even opening process explorer took minutes and a game install I had just started took nearly 4 hours to complete. When procexp finally loaded, the refresh was so slow that it was mostly useless. From what I could gather, it was reporting 60% idle processes with procexp using nearly 40%. There were no hardware interrupts listed. When I rebooted, the problem went away for about 10 minutes and then the same thing happened. The issue persists in safe mode and even after I removed the graphics drivers, which have been an issue in the past, it still happens. Icons flash quite quickly on the desktop periodically and screen refresh is painfully slow. When booting now, the fans kick in to full as soon as the windows logon box comes up and it's taking 10 minutes to bring the desktop up. Chkdsk reports nothing and the raid check says that everything is fine. I'm thinking hardware failure, probably HDD but wanted some other opinions. I'm planning to try a linux live cd to see if it works without using the hard disks. If anyone has any input, it would be greatly appreciated. Delenda

• Home Network Stopped Working

  I have a home network where a machine running Windows 7 Ultimate N acts as a central hub for other devices to access media. This has been running for around 2 years now and there has been no recent configuration changes. The machine has a static IP address (192.168.0.3), which also has not been changed. A few laptops, Sonos music system and mobiles are using the machine for music/video mostly. Additionally, post 3389 was also open for RDP. I used a no-ip agent to map a hostname so I could RDP to the machine from the internet. As of yesterday when I try to ping the machine, I get PING:Transmit Failed, General Error I noticed however, the IP it is pinging is 0.0.2.233. All shares etc are no longer functioning including RDP. On the machine itself, an IP config shows like nothing has changed. It still shows the expected IP. If I ping itself from its hostname, I get the same error as above. machine has been rebooted, the router has been also. Any ideas where to even start on this?

• Rescue system running TFS that BSODs, into vmware esxi

  Hi, After moving to new facilities, one of our old Dell servers running Windows Server 2003 R2 on PowerEdge 2650 HW BSODs with 0x8e. The server runs Team Foundation Server, so we have a few guys dependent on it. No one here knows TFS, so we have no idea how difficult it would be to setup from scratch. We have the MSSQL database(s) backed up, recent and fresh copy. Tried removing/refitting memory modules, but with no success. The system boots into safe mode but hangs occasionally. I booted a linux livecd and did a dd of both c: and d:, so I have all the data in compressed images on a vmware machine. For the guest, I created a 38G (actually it became 40GB) partition to act as C:, and booted a live cd. I then uncompressed the compressed disk image of c: and dd'd it to the new c: using 'gunzip -dc c.img.gz | dd of=/dev/sda1 bs=1M'. The operation ran for about 1000 seconds, and completed successfully. I assumed it would at least try to boot windows (but most likely BSOD due to not having correct drivers), but the Vmware ESXi guest does not seem to recognize it as a bootable disk. We don't have the vmware enterprise license, so the vmware converter cold cloning is not an option. Did I do something wrong in my dd's etc with the ISOs, or why would it not (try to) boot? Am I wasting my time? What other approach is there? Will continue to try to remove services and drivers to make the physical machine at least work reasonably well in safe mode. What do you suggest? 1. Continue to get the dd'd images to the virtual disk and get it to boot. 2. Install a new windows server, get team foundation server and restore from backup. 3. Focus on the old problematic hardware Any help appreciated

• How do I send e-mails with attachments to a Microsoft WebTV user?

  my friend uses Microsoft WebTV (e-mail address ends with @webtv.net) and I'd like to send him an e-mail with a picture attached to it. We went through a series of attempts one of which ended up a success, all others a failure. He just can't see my e-mail in his mailbox, when it contains an attachment. E-mails without attachments always go through all right. What seemed to help in the first successful case, was that he added my e-mail address to his address book and my e-mail suddenly showed up. Seemed to have been delivered before but hidden. He kept my address in his address book however, it didn't help with the following trials. He did look into his junk folder, nothing there. I made sure the file name contains no spaces. It's a regular jpeg, named something-like-this.jpg I downsized it to have only about 50k, as I've read somewhere that that's a limit. I actually doubt this piece of information, because I think the successful attempt was larger. webtv.net contains zero information. I watched their video demo for the e-mail client, so I at least know how the user interface looks like. I've never laid my hands on the real thing. I'm an advanced user myself (a programmer) but I can't wrap my mind around this. He on the other hand, is a very technically inexperienced user and because he's half way across the globe, I can't come and look over his shoulder. He doesn't have a computer, afaik there's no way I could see what he sees. Any ideas on how to debug this? Thanks for your time, guys. P.S. • Ubuntu 10.04 on virtualbox gives error: Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init \ No init found. Try passing init= bootarg

  I'm a linux newbie and the only reason I have it installed is so I can stop having Windows incompatibility issues with Ruby on Rails. Having said that, it sure has been nice, and much faster, and I don't think I'll be doing any Winrails stuff anytime soon. So I created a virtualmachine using virtualbox and have had ubuntu on it for the last 3 weeks. Recently ubuntu asked if it could update a few things, I clicked 'ok'. Now it won't boot and I get this error: *mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory ... Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg BusyBox v1.13.3... (initramfs) _ * So I cruised the forums and there are a variety of solutions, but they all have to do with booting from the live cd. (which I assume is the ISO image I used to install ubuntu in the first place). But when I boot from that CD, it just hangs on the ubuntu screen, and the little dots keep cycling white to red, but it hung there for an hour so I think it was stuck. Not sure what I can do; can I do anything from the busybox shell (or whatever that is) to fix things? The thing is, it took about 10 hours to get everything the way I needed with all the gems and whatnot. And I didn't really write down what I tweaked, and I'm middle aged, so all that information has leaked out by now and I don't want to do it again. I'd really like to repair my existing install. One question you might have is, is there something wrong with the ISO? I don't think so, because I made a new virtual machine and used that same iso file to install a fresh ubuntu. • Data loss by randomly unplugging the computer during runtime

  I'm from Austria and we and the Germans have some sort of bad science-show which runs every day. What I call it would rougly translate to "half-knowledge" if you want so. By the way: It is called "Galileo". So they thought they'd make a computer myth busters video right now, and I couldn't believe what I saw and heard... The strangest thing to me was that they asked: "Does unplugging the computer damage your data?" Then they started up some machine with Vista on it, started copying some files and randomly unplugged the PC cable, the whole thing around 50 times. After their computer continued to start up normally, they just said "nothing can happen, your data or computer can't be damaged". They of course excluded unsaved data in running programs like text editors from this. I asked myself: What the hell are their "computer experts" saying? You can't tell by unplugging the cable 50 times if that can damage your computer. Can unplugging the cable during runtime cause data loss (as said by the moderator of the show)? (I destroyed my windows registry once during a reset)

• Half of installed RAM is hardware reserved

  After a rather arduous and convoluted series of problems that left me without a desktop for ~80 days, I've finally got the thing up and running, having replaced the power supply, motherboard, graphics card and CPU. Now, however, I'm experiencing the 'hardware reserved RAM' issue. Perhaps this is the exhaustion talking, but looking at the question that tends to get pointed to when this kind of topic gets locked as a duplicate hasn't helped. I have 16 GB of RAM installed in an MSi 970A-G46, which is spec'd for up to 32 GB of RAM. The BIOS recognizes that I have 16 GB installed, and the resource monitor also shows the whole 16 GB, only it shows 8 GB as hardware reserved. I've seen suggestions that it's an OS issue, but the particular installation of Windows 7 (64-bit) which I'm running on my boot drive is the same as the one that could actually access the 16 GB in my previous motherboard (MSi 870A-G54). I've updated my BIOS using the MSi Live Update tool and restarted the machine with no effect, and I cannot seem to locate any 'Memory Remapping' option as I've seen mentioned. I've physically swapped the RAM between the slots to no effect. I've unchecked the Maximum Memory box in the msconfig Boot tab's advanced options, also to no effect. • Persistent PuTTY sessions for multiple windows

  I'm working in various Linux environments through PuTTY connections which break from time to time. I'm looking for a solution to make the PuTTY windows persist (e.g. if I was editing a file, then after reconnecting I should be in the same editor with the same file open at the same place), with the following requirements: it shouldn't require any manual setup at the beginning of the session or after reconnection (I don't want to type in screen or anything like that) I have several windows open to the same machine with the same user, which tend to disconnect at the same time the number/role of windows is not constant (it's not like I have an mc window, a mysql window and a "script runner" window; sometimes I use one window for search or for SVN commands, other times I need several at the same time) sometimes I need to change the properties of the windows for a task (large window for grepping/editing, small windows because I need to see two of them at the same time, red background because I am modifying the live database in MySQL etc), so I need to get the same console back in the same window after a reconnect Is there a way to achieve this? I suppose I should use screen or something equivalent, but how does it know which window I am reconnecting from? Is there some way to pass a unique window identifier to the shell from PuTTY?

• Windows-7 Ultimate 64 bit wont connect to my wired/wireless networks.

  Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Everything was working fine & then just stopped working. The nic card Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is enabled but does not connect to my router (cables & router ports are good). Wireless Atheros AR5007EG is enabled but the connection is limited (encryption type / key have been verified). A laptop running XP can connect both wired / wireless. SSID is not being broadcast, connect to network if it is not broadcasting is checked. Have checked services.msc for Bonjour & did not see it listed. Network & sharing center does not list any active networks. Device manager lists both devices as functioning properly. Router configuration has not been changed. Virus scan has not found anything. I would like to fix this rather than using Acronis to do a system restore. Thanks in advance for any advice offered in solving this. 26 Jan, the nic card & wireless are working using PCLinux OS Live CD. It appears that the problem is Windows 7 related.

• Windows 8 Windows Store (Metro/ModernUI) applications not working (just show 'busy' animation or white screen)

  I have a Dell XPS 15 which shipped with Windows 7 x64, which I recently upgraded to Windows 8. The process went surprisingly smoothly (given that this was an upgrade, not a complete re-install), and the system generally seems very stable. However, today I noticed that several of the Windows Store apps don't work: they all behave in the same way, launching but then showing a spinning 'wait' animation indefinitely. This is affecting the standard Microsoft Mail, Store, Weather, News, Travel, Finance, Sport, Games and Music apps. The Bing app just shows a Bing logo on a coloured background (but no wait animation). The Calendar, Photos and SkyDrive apps open but then show a white screen. The Maps and Camera apps work without problems. The live tiles on the Start screen are updating correctly, for example the Mail app's tile shows a summary of new mail despite the Mail app's problems. All of these applications were working correctly a few days ago. I'm sure I've used several without problems since the last Windows update occurred on 7th November. Any suggestions on what might have happened and/or how to fix it would be very welcome. I don't need these Windows Store applications, but the fact that they're not working is irritating me.

Relevant specs: Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO Utilizing Intel RST technology (application that uses unused SSD as cache) Processor: Intel core i7-2600k (not overclocked) HDDs: RAID1 of 2x Seagate Barracuda 1TB (ST31000524AS) (RAID performed via z68 chipset) Machine has run fine for ~1 year with no issues, and has been well-maintained (dust, etc.) What Happened Random Freezing issues -- intermittent Looked at the RST application screen to see that the acceleration cache was listed as "unavailable" -- recommended that I power down and reconnect the drive. Reconnected the drive to no avail. Attempted to move the drive to another SATA port. Acceleration option disappeared from RST software. Now, the freeze happens whenever loading something particularly data-driven (a video, a game, etc.) Steps Attempted Reconnected the drive to no avail. Updated Intel RST software to v. 11.6.0.1030 to see if that made a difference. Attempted to move the drive to another SATA port. Acceleration option disappeared from RST software. Connected the drive as its own volume. Formatted it, ran disk check errors -- all seems fine. Reconnected the drive and selected it again as the cache drive. Now, what happens when there is a freeze: Machine freezes I am unable to perform any command Screen then goes black I hit the reset button During boot, all drives show as "Disabled" and I am told no volume can be found I then hit the reset button (or power off/on) again. Either the next time (or sometimes after repeating this once more), the metadata cache is reconstructed and the system boots fine, showing the SSD as a cache. Question I believe this is an issue with the SSD itself, but how can I be sure since connecting it separately appeared to show no problems? I want to make sure it's not an issue with the motherboard, SATA ports, etc.

• How can I take browser screenshots at a higher resolution than my browser supports?

  I need to take a screenshot of a website as it would appear on a very high resolution monitor... say 16000x12800 pixels. My laptop's screen has a native resolution of 1280x800. Basically, I need to simulate having a monitor resolution much higher than my monitor and video card actually supports. I want the screenshot of the site to look pretty much how it does when you hit CTRL MINUS (zoom out) in Firefox repeatedly, but without any loss of pixels due to scaling. How can I do this? Is there some way to use virtual machine software to simulate a super-high-res display? If not, is there some way to open a browser window bigger than the screen, and then capture its contents as a PNG somehow? Anything else that might work? • WAN Optimization for Small Office/Home Office

  I have been reading up on WAN optimization for the last while, mostly out of interest of speeding up my own internet connections, but also to speed up the office internet connection. At home, I have 2 cable modems plugged into a RouterBoard RB750, which load balances the connections. In the office, we have a single connection into a NetGear router. Most of the WAN Optimization products I have seen, seem to be prohibitively expensive, but also seem to be based on the idea of having multiple branches around the world. What I am looking for, ideally, is as follows: software install: I am "guessing" I need to install it in 2 places: one in the office or house, and one in "the cloud". any connections going to, say, The US (we are in Europe, but our backup's live in the US currently, which would be something important to speed up) would be "tunnelled" though the Optimizer. If downloading or uploading large files, open multiple connections between both "the cloud" and the optimizer... This is where a lot of speed could be gained. finally, for items not compressed, they would be compressed on the cloud side of things, also items that are already on the optimizer could be not sent again. kind of like RSync or Proxy servers... So, is there something that can be done? Is it available using off the shelf components (some magic script with SSH, Squid, Linux and duct tape) or is it something that needs to be purchased? or even an Open Source Project that does 90% of what i am asking?

• Website hosted on my virtualbox web server not displaying images or applying css when viewed through phone

  I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. Please let me know if you need more info in the comments. My Set Up I have a windows 7 pc. On it I run a virtual box VM with a ubuntu 12 guest os and LAMP setup. I share files between the two machines using samba from linux to windows and using windows file sharing (Workgroup) the other way round. The vm is set up with a bridged network adapter and can happily serve web pages to my host machine. I use DHCP reservations on my home wireless router/modem to reserve an ip for the vm and give it a sitename.dev in my windows host file so I can access it at sitename.dev through the browser. The Problem So far so good but I have a dev project which needs a lot of mobile template development, now obviously I can use a browser plugin to simulate a mobile device but I would like to be able to see the real thing easily on my phone during development. So ideally I would like a similar setup on my iphone to my windows setup Now I'm not great on networking and dont have much experience with web server set up. So when I typed the ip of my virtual box into my iphone i wasnt expecting to see anything. I was pleasantly surprised when my site loaded up. The javascript even seems to be running but the images and css are not happening. My Question 1) What is happening here, is it something to do with the bridged set up on the vm network? 2)How do I make the sites load properly through my phone Notes I've also tried another phone. The same sites viewed on live servers work fine.

• Unable to resize ec2 ebs root volume

  I have followed many of the tutorials that pretty much all say the same thing which is basically: Stop the instance Detach the volume Create a snapshot of the volume Create a bigger volume from the snapshot Attach the new volume to the instance Start the instance back up Run resize2fs /dev/xxx However, step 7 is where the problems start happening. In any case running resize2fs always tells me that it is already xxxxx blocks big and does nothing, even with -f passed. So I start to continue with tutorials which all basically say the same thing and that is: Delete all partitons Recreate them back to what they were except with the bigger sizes Reboot the instance and run resize2fs (I have tried these steps both from the live instance and by attaching the volume to another instance and running the commands there) The main problem is that the instance won't start back up again and the system error log provided in the AWS console doesn't provide any errors. (it does however stop at the grub bootloader which to me indicates that it doesn't like the partitions(yes, the boot flag was toggled on the partition with no affect)) The other thing that happens regardless of what changes I make to the partitions is that the instance that the volume is attached to says that the partition has an invalid magic number and the super-block is corrupt. However, if I make no changes and reattach the volume, the instance runs without a problem. Can anybody shed some light on what I could be doing wrong? Also, sudo resize2fs /dev/xvde1 says: resize2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) The filesystem is already 1536000 blocks long. Nothing to do!
