  • Uninstall Java on Mac OS X?

    I'm working on a trouble shooting document for some desktop software that runs in Java. One of the last resort steps is to completely uninstall and reinstall the Java runtime. In Windows XP this can be done via Add/Remove Programs. Is there something equivalent on OSX? Or does reinstalling the runtime overwrite the current version?

I don't know where the problem is and I hope to know how to solve it.

  • My facebook blocking ACL has stopped working

    This probably very simple. This was setup before I arrived, and has been working to block facebook. I recently eliminated some static port forwarding on this 2691 (as in, I don't think anything else has changed), and now facebook is once again accessible. Why is this list not doing what it seems like it should be doing (and was doing)? Would an extended outbound ACL be more appropriate (I think that would have been my thought if I had been tasked with creating this in the first place)? Something different?     In my VPS (Hypervm/CENTOS 5.8 i686 virtuozzo) I need to add IP bans with comments ( http://spamcleaner.org/en/misc/iptables-comment.html ) When I type: iptables -A INPUT -s 222.111.111.111 -j DROP -m comment --comment "spammer123" I receive: iptables: Unknown error 4294967295 I research almost 2 hours but i find nothing, someone says "its a bug and you have to rebuild kernel!?" Does anyone know a solution or a different method for adding a comment or note ?

  • Referencing a specific figure in Microsoft Word 2003

    Referring to the screenshot below: I want to be able to reference the figure in the body of the text properly without having to change them manually every time I add a figure label before that body of text. However, I don't know how to do it aside from adding caption labels, which won't work for cases where I have more than one reference to the figure (at least I don't know how to do that properly anyway). How would you recommend accomplishing that?

  • Adding Windows XP on a macbook pro running MacOS and Ubuntu

    My Macbook Pro already dual boots MacOSX or Ubuntu with ReFit. I would like to add Windows 7 in the mix. I can make enough space in the Mac partition to accomodate that, but just want to be sure the Windows installation is not going to wipe out anything and I will still be able to access both OS. Anything else to watch out for is welcome. (Sorry for not posting a question about an actual problem, but I figured that when I have a problem, it will just be too late).

    I'm thinking about encrypting my whole harddrive for example using TrueCrypt, which I've used for encrypting file containers for a while. It is possible to encrypt the whole harddisk through the program and then add a password secured bootloader before the actual bootloader. Is it possible to do this on a dualboot system with Windows 7 and Fedora 15 currently using Grub as the main bootloader? If so, is it possible to reinstall a system later or will that ruin the whole setup? Thanks

    How to get reference count for an object Is it possible to determine if a javascript object has multiple references to it? Or if it has references besides the one I'm accessing it with? Or even just to get the reference count itself? Can I find this information from javascript itself, or will I need to keep track of my own reference counters. Obviously, there must be at least one reference to it for my code access the object. But what I want to know is if there are any other references to it, or if my code is the only place it is accessed. I'd like to be able to delete the object if nothing else is referencing it. If you know the answer, there is no need to read the rest of this question. Below is just an example to make things more clear. Use Case In my application, I have a Repository object instance called contacts that contains an array of ALL my contacts. There are also multiple Collection object instances, such as friends collection and a coworkers collection. Each collection contains an array with a different set of items from the contacts Repository. Sample Code To make this concept more concrete, consider the code below. Each instance of the Repository object contains a list of all items of a particular type. You might have a repository of Contacts and a separate repository of Events. Summary The above is what I want to do. I'm sure there are ways I can do this by keeping track of my own reference counters and such. But if there is a way to do it using javascript's built-in reference management, I'd like to hear about how to use it.

  • Converting an EC2 AMI to vmdk image

    I've come quite close to getting Amazon Linux to boot inside VirtualBox, thanks to this answer and these websites. A quick overview of the steps I've taken: Launch EC2 instance with Amazon Linux 2011.09 64-bit AMI dd the contents of the EBS volume over ssh to a local image file. Mount the image file as a loopback device and then to a local mount point. Create a new empty disk image file, partition with an offset for a bootloader, and create an ext4 filesystem. Mount the new image's partition and copy everything from the EC2 image. Install grub (using Ubuntu's grub-legacy-ec2 package, not grub2). Convert the image file to vmdk using qemu-img. Create a new VirtualBox VM with the vmdk. Now the VM boots, grub loads, and the kernel is found. But it fails when it tries to mount the root device: dracut Warning: No root device "block:/dev/xvda1" found dracut Warning: Boot has failed. To debug this issue add "rdshell" to the kernel command line. dracut Warning: Signal caught! dracut Warning: Boot has failed. To debug this issue add "rdshell" to the kernel command line. Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Pid: 1, comm: init Not tainted 2.6.35.14-107.1.39.amzn1.x86_64 #1 I have tried changing /boot/grub/menu.lst to find the root device by label and UUID, but nothing works. I'm guessing the xen kernel is not compatible with VirtualBox. The reasoning behind all this effort is to make a Vagrant box that is as close to possible as the production enviroment, so deploys can be tested locally. I know it's cheap to do test runs on EC2, but poor connectivity often ruins the experience. Plus it would be really nice to have a virtual machine with the production environment so that co-workers don't have to install everything under the sun just to get up and running with app development. If I were to try running a different kernel, what kernel could I get to be as close as possible to Amazon Linux 2011.09?

    I have several external USB drives currently (1x500GB and 2x1TB). If I were to purchase the ReadNAS NV+ 4TB NAS, would I be able to: Possibly add even more USB drives to it with a HUB? Export NFS shares of the data on the USB drives keeping the current ext3 fs and data on the USB drives intact? Does anyone have any caveats with this system they feel I should know?

It's okay if I require more than 1 program. That would still be better than having 50 million terminals open and trying to trace ip assignments etc on whiteboards.     When I add an outlook.com account I get this error: Error Code: 0x80004005 Too many devices synching with your account I definitely do not have multiple devices synching with this account... I searched online and it looks like this error has something to do with number of folders in the email. However, this is a fresh account. I only have the default folders in there. Any idea how to fix this?

The 'Date modified' of the .VHD stays at the starttime of the VM. 1/How can we force an update of het VM while the VM is running? 2/Where aree the temporary changes kept?
