• Computer hanged in the middle of bios flashing process

  I have a laptop: Toshiba Satellite c660-17j, today I decided to update BIOS. I've downloaded bios updater from manufacturer's web site, and in the middle of flashing process computer hanged. I was waiting more than 30 minutes, but nothing was changed on the screen, i've tryed to PRESS MORE BUTTONS, but there were no reactions, so i've turned it off by removing battery (all other methods failed, even pressing power button for ~10 secs). After that computer can't start. I understand, that there's MESS in BIOS chip, and it's possible to re-flash it with hardware programmer, but I don't have it. I remember, that on some PCs (even on my eeepc) there was possibility to re-flash bios by inserting usb flash-disk (with .dat file on it, which contained BIOS), and power on PC, while holding some keys combination, then PC was switching to BIOS programming mode and re-flashed BIOS, after that it was possible to boot up normaly. Is there a way to recover computer without hardware programming BIOS chip? p.s. sorry for my english.

• Software to create a virtual parallel port in Windows XP?

  I am writing a program that will eventually be used on a computer with a physical parallel port and will need to set certain pins high or low in order to signal to an external device. However, the development laptop I am using does not have any physical parallel ports and is too low powered to run a virtual machine. Is there any option available that will create a virtual parallel port within Windows XP? Ideally it would include a debug mode that would allow me to see what values have been pushed out on the parallel port.

• Linux cannot alter partition table of main hard disk of my laptop

  I run openSUSE 12.2 on my ASUS N76VZ laptop. My problem is that I cannot alter the partition table of first hard disk /dev/sda1. YaST partitioner says it's unreadable, but actually it can read it but not alter it. It doesn't tell me anything else, except that I can wipe the partition table (having to reinstall Windows for the third time). Since I want to create new partitions on that disk, how do I fix the partition table layout? I could create new partition from Windows Computer Management and format them in Linux. I could do this, but it doesn't explain the problem

• Ubuntu 6.06 Boot problem

  I tried to boot my pc using ubuntu 6.06 in the live cd mode but it refuses to boot. It throws the error Uncompressing Linux.. ok, booting from kernel [ 54.168828] ACPI Unable to load the System Descriptor Tables The live cd works perfectly okay in other computers. Out of curiosity, I also tried to boot using Slax live cd, It too threw some errors incomplete literal tree invalid compressed format (err=1) UDF-fs: No partition found (1) XFS: bade magic number XFS: SB validate failed Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0) The slax errors are a bit worrying to me. • WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

  My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice.   I am looking for where the default Amazon AMI linux image sets up the privileges for the default ec2-user account. After logging in with this account I can use sudo successfully. Checking via the sudoers file, which I open by running visudo (with no other options) I see a few default settings and permissions for root ALL ALL So ... Where is the permissions for ec2-user assigned? I have not yet tried to add a new permission but ultimately I want to resign ec2-user for systems management tasks and use a non-full root user for administering the applications (stop and start mysql, httpd, edit apache's vhost files, and upload / edit web content under the web root)

• I can see markup characters in vim `:help`

  I just created a .txt file inside .vim/doc for documenting one little function of my .vimrc, ran :helptags ~/.vim/doc and apparently the whole vim help system went wild. Now, if I open for example :help help, I see things like: This also works together with other characters, for example to find help for CTRL-V in Insert mode: > :help i^V < (notice the < and characters). I can also see the ~ at the end of headlines and the modeline at the end of the help page (thinks like vim:tw=78:ts=8:ft=help:norl:). I have no idea about what happens or how to fix it. Any clue?   I have a few access points on one floor of a high-rise building. They support both 2.4 ghz and 5ghz. When I used 2.4 ghz, the channel management features did not seem to work and we experienced frequent problems. When I switched to 5 ghz the problems went away. However, the 5ghz standard is much less accepted. And when clients come in, they want 2.4ghz. What can I do? How can I offer 2.4ghz wi-fi in an area with a lot of interference?

• XP Laptop Restarting

  I have a Dell 1525 which I reinstalled xp on recently due to a hard disk problem. Apparently I've missed something, it's taken to restarting for no apparent reason (I believe it's too frequent for windows updates which was my first thought). Last night it was particularly bad, it stopped 5 times in 2 hours while playing an online game. I can't actually think of a time it's happened when it's not running something in full screen mode. I can't see anything in the event log apart from usual start up details. How can I find and fix this issue?

• It takes a long time until windows xp recognize I connected USB diks

  Hello IT guys, I have a problem with my new USB disk. When I connect it to my laptop with Windows XP SP2 it takes about 4-5min until Windows recognized it and show it as a new disk. I can also see (disk's LED is blinking) that something is scaning the disk when I connect it, when this is done Windows imediately recognize it. Also when I'm copying data to this disk the speed is about 3.5MB/sec. It's connected using USB2.0. I tried to check for spyware (using spybot), also run windows in safe mode. But still have the same problems. Do you have any idea what could help to solve this problem? On Windows Vista (another laptop) everything is ok, disk loads in about 15sec and speed is about 20-30MB/sec. Thanks a lot for every advice!

• AD Local Admins without password sharing

  My team is building out an Active Directory environment in a small grad school with support for general computer labs, and staff/faculty machine and account management. We have a team of student consultants that are hired to do general help desk work. As of now we have a local admin account on every machine. It has the same password and all of us know it. I know it's not best practice and I want to avoid this with the new setup. We want to have local admin accounts in case there are network issues that prevent AD authentication, but we do not want this account to be generic with a shared password. Is there a way we can get each machine to cache the necessary information to authenticate a group of local admins so that if AD is somehow inaccessible, student consultants can still login with their AD admin accounts?

• Any Windows based OpenID servers out there? [closed]

  I've been looking to setup an OpenID server for a special project, but haven't found any workable OpenID server software packages. Originally was looking for a *nix solution, and found several, but they all had some kind of issue. So far I've tried JOIDS, community-id, and a couple others I unfortunately can't remember the names of. I've also come to the conclusion that even if I had managed to get one of those going that the management/upgrade cycles would have placed undue burden on the company (only a couple part time sysadmins with *nix knowledge, the day to day people are primarily Windows). So, I'm hoping that there's a Windows one out that will be functional that someone knows about and will be easy for a minimal support environment...

• Windows Reformatting

  I recently began formatting a hard drive via USB extenal drive when the power went off. When i powered it up again and connected the drive the drives dont show up under my computer. When i go to disk management, i see the drive but now it says unallocated space. The drive was initialy partitioned into 2 drives. I cant see both drives now. Tried running GetDataBack NTFS recovery tool and it only comes up with errors. There seem to be no information on the drive from the data recovery utility. I know the information is there but how do i find it. HELP!!!!

• How do I trap the mouse pointer within a VirtualBox Guest OS?

  I'm on a Mac Mini 2011 with VirtualBox installed. I have Windows 7 running as a Guest OS. My question: How do I "trap" my mouse pointer within Windows? In other words, I don't want my mouse to move outside to the Host OS. Ideally, I would be able to press the Host key to "untrap" my mouse. The purpose: I'm playing Warcraft 3 in the Guest OS and I can't scroll the screen since the mouse keeps jumping to the Host OS instead of scrolling the screen. This happens even in full-screen mode.

• Type 1 Hypervisor on the desktop

  I have a powerful home PC, and I've used VirtualBox to run Linux distros in Windows (and vice versa). I'm interested in trying out a lightweight type 1 hypervisor to run all my operating systems (Windows 7, Debian, Arch) and was looking for suggestions of which to pick and how to implement this. From what I gather, a type 1 hypervisor is a lightweight OS which simply provides VM management functionality. Will I get reasonable performance under each guest OS? Can all the guest OSs have access to a shared data drive, or is is best to have a storage server in another guest OS and mount it over the virtual network? What about gaming, is this feasible, or will I realistically need to run Win7 on bare metal? I'd appreciate any input.

• Http Hanlder must be reset with each deployment. How can I add this functionality to the web.config

  My application is a dotnet 4 hybrid - MVC in some areas, web forms in others. This application was recently upgraded to dotnet 4 and includes a lot of older code and some mismatched parts. Unfortunately it includes a telerik component that requires me to run the Application pool in classic mode. In order to fix this (in IIS7) I have to add a handler mapping to the IIS configuration. This mapping is basically a wildcard mapping that points the wildcard path "*" to the %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_isapi.dll. The problem I am running into is this: For some reason this mapping gets dropped when deploying the site. So, can I add the functionality of this mapping to the web config? If so, How? Or is there another solution to make this manually added mapping "sticky" so that it remains in place during and after a deployment? (I am also asking this on StackOverflow, as I'm not sure if this should be a coding question or a Server question)

• Problem starting X in unbuntu 10.10

  Hi, I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my old toshiba a100 (where I've been running XP with no problems for ages). The installation went fine, I can log in with my user account, but after that the screen has only the wallpaper (and the mouse is enabled). Any hints on how to troubleshoot it ? These are the Xorg and the messages log files. Thanks When booted in safe graphics mode it worked just fine. Is there a way to set that configuration as the default so I don't have to go through those menus every time I boot ?

• Microsoft mouse screws up my power settings

  Running a new computer with Windows 7 and 64-bit OS. Had a wireless Logitech mouse that worked perfectly with this set up. The mouse was old, and the buttons were sticking and causing double clicks, so I bought a new Microsoft Mobile Wireless 3000 mouse to replace it. The new mouse works perfectly, but now my screen saver is disabled and my computer won't go into sleep mode after 15 minutes as per my power setting. If I hook the Logitech mouse back up, screen saver works fine and computer goes to sleep as it should. Am I missing something, or is Microsoft's mouse just junk. Got no software with the new mouse, so no drivers seem available.

  I run a win 2k8 a/d server and an win 2k8 exchange 07 server I have a group called 'No Internet Mail', i made it a distribution group. I tried to setup a transport rule on the exchange server that is configured as follows for outgoing: from a member of no internet mail and sent to users outside the organization redirect the message to administrator and send message refused, forwarded to administrator. Please talk to management for external email use. however , when i enable this it forwards everyones emails to me regardless if they are a member of the no internet mail group or not. not sure what im doing wrong, thanks in advanced.

• Why my browsers display XML files as blank pages?

  Every time I open an XML file, all I get is blank page instead of tag tree. The file itself is correct and loads okay, I can see it via View Source or in the Firebug. I've tried turning off all my addons and tried running Firefox in safe mode, but the problem was not solved. I'm guessing that I've messed up my configuration somehow and Firefox now tries to render XML files as HTML ones. I've tried googling, but with no success. Help, please? • unable to transfer files from handy cam to PC

  I am using a Windows 7 PC,I am using sony dcr -sr88 handy cam . I need to transfer all my videos from handycam to my PC. when i try to connect to the PC through USB. it detects the usb drive in the Handycam on my PC and shows the used memory. But when i open the folder it shows "folder is empty". How i can copy the files? I have tried following: Changed the USB cable CHanged the USB port I can play the videos through handicam, but those files not visible in PC when connected in USB mode. Please help ..bit urgent!

• How to access both partitions on a bootable USB flash drive in Windows

  I have a 16GB USB Flash Drive that is partitioned into two different sizes. The first partition contains a bootable version of Ubuntu, the second partition is for general saving of files. Windows will only recognise the first partition. I have tried using Bootice but this breaks the bootable partition. Disk Management recognises the second partition but does not allow me to do anything with it. Is there a way to make both partitions accessible by Windows and keep the USB disk bootable?

• How to "eject" non-existing USB drive from Windows 7 host?

  I use a USB key which is encrypted with BitLocker to store various data. I keep that key with me all the time. What happens all the time is that I send my home computer to hibernate without ejecting the USB key first. Then I unplug the key and take it with me to work. When I get home, I resume my Windows session and even though the key is not plugged in, the drive still appears as mounted on the system. I can also unmount the non-existing device with mountvol, but that only removes the drive letter. Windows will still think the device is plugged in. When I plug the key in, nothing happens. The device's class ID is listed in mountvol output, but the device is not listed in the Disk Management panel.
