• I lost /dev/md2 on my server

  Hi, My 2 hard drives fried at the same moment apparently. My host company rebooted my server in rescue mode and I am trying to recover my data. They told me to mount /dev/sda2 to recover the data I need but, looking at a similar server that I have in pool, the data I'm looking for should be instead in /dev/md2. I can find /dev/md0 but not /dev/md2 (nor /dev/md1). I've looked on several places on the web and I could only find messages explaining how to create new partition. I just need to recover some data, not all of it and I'll be glad if anyone could help me to mount the /dev/md2 folder (or any other trick that would allow me to recover the data that was stored there). • Access denied for user 'root@localhost' (using password:NO)

  I am attempting to install a network management package called cacti onto Ubuntu running under Windows Virtual PC. I attempted to install MySQL as it is one of cacti's dependencies. I can install and start the MySQL server, but whenever I try to access it in any other way, such as to change the password, I get the error message Access denied for user 'root@localhost' (using password:NO). I would like to know what is causing this and how to fix it. Edit: (just in case my comments are not visible) The answers from HD and Devin Ceartas did not work for me.

• Replacing explorer.exe under Windows 7

  A bit of an odd request I gather, but for reasons too deep to go into detail here I need to replace my explorer.exe in the C:\Windows directory. I have tried doing it myself, through the GUI and command prompt (ran as administrator) but I get access denied. It seems that being an admin on your machine is not the highest permission level after all, and only Trusted Installer can modify the file. Does anybody know a way that works? I was about to boot into safe mode and try it but wanted to get some feedback before I do anything in-depth. Thanks.

• Access denied to EFS encrypted files after PC joins domain

  I'm experiencing strange behavior with Windows Encrypted File System: I have a machine that is in workgroup mode (not joined to a domain) I encrypt an entire directory structure on the machine (basically a folder and subfolders with data files for my application). My application writes and reads files from the encrypted file hierarchy as a local Windows user (let's call the account 'SecureUser'). This works fine I then join the PC to a domain (Let's call it 'TEST') Afterwards, processes running as the local 'SecureUser' account can't read the files it wrote originally when it was off the domain (What is also strange is that the files are listed as "read only" now and I cannot unset this flag via Windows Explorer or the command line, even though it looks like it succeeds) I then 'un-join' the PC from the domain and everything works again Is there something about changing domain membership on a PC that changes the behavior of EFS so that previously encrypted files cannot be read, even by the originating user? • Multi-monitor resolution and position settings lost after reboot

  I've had two 1280x1024 monitors running for years on an nVidia 8800GT card with no problems. I've now replaced one monitor with a new 2560x1440 one. The card seems to support both fine, however every time I reboot the resolutions and monitor positions revert to the old settings. I've tried upgrading, downgrading, stripping out and reinstalling many versions of the nvidia drivers to no avail. Logging in as another user doesn't help - same problem. Booting into another another OS (Win7 64) works OK, so it is just this OS installation. During boot up everything looks fine (ie native 2450x1440 res) until the nVidia control panel or something is loaded which flips it back into the old mode. I have no old saved nvidia profiles. I can't find anything in the registry relating to these old settings. Its driving me crazy having to set resolutions and realign monitors on every reboot! Can anybody help?

  I'm looking for an application that can manage (save/open) multiple Internet Explorer instances (to be precise nomerge sessions), host them in single window and arrange these instances e.g. in tabs, so in result you have double tab bar. In functionality it's similar to Remote Desktop Manager, where you can create Web session, but in embedded mode you cannot set the nomerge option. I've been searching the web, but with no results. So I put this question whether anyone know of such application or workaround. Or I have to write my own app.

• BSOD / Reboot Cycling (possibly after windows update?)

  Windows XP SP3 Hi Guys, My desktop PC rebooted during the night (presumably due to an automated Windows update) and was stuck on a file system check. I forced a reboot as it had been stuck for hours and now the system won't finish booting. It shows the Windows XP splash screen, briefly flickers what looks to be a BSOD, and then reboots. So far, I've tried: Booting into all variations of safe mode (just hangs) Setting BIOS settings to fail-safe defaults (still reboots) Choosing the start-up option to load last known good configuration (still reboots) Any suggestions on how to proceed here? I haven't installed any recent software or hardware so I don't think this is a result of any explicit change I've made. -M

• Finding documentation for /etc/**/*.dpkg-*

  During upgrades, files with these extensions appear in /etc and its subdirectories. I gather that *.dpkg-dist contains the file that was distributed with the currently-installed version of a package, and *.dpkg-new contains the version from the version being installed, however I'd like to see the docs to be sure that I'm getting it right. Also there are occasionally other similarly named files, eg *.dpkg-original, and I'd like to be able to read up on these. I've checked /usr/share/doc/dpkg for documentation on this, and come up empty; there's no dpkg-doc package; Google doesn't have anything except unanswered questions. Can someone point me to the documentation for this aspect of debian package management?

• Lenovo N100 and Samsung SSD 830, shouldn't this go faster than 100MB/s?

  I recently upgrated my Lenovo N100 0768 with a Samsung SSD 830 - specified to support 520 MB/s read and 320MB/s write. However, having only SATA1 with max. of 150MB/s speed, it has to run in a slower mode - of course. But, shouldn't it be more on the edge of this limit than ranging between 90-115MB/s and averaging around 103MB/s? Or is this really as much as I can expect? Tested with HD-Tach. Has anyone comparable results on a SATA1 controller with a SSD drive faster than SATA1? Preferably similar to the Samsung 830?

• Can I enlarge OS C: drive of my Windows 8 PC?

  Last year I got a new Western Digital WD Blue 500GB HDD to replace my old drive. The first thing I did was to install latest Windows 8. While installing Windows 8 I created 3 partitions, C drive for the OS and others for storage. The OS partition is 120GB (which at the time I thought would be plenty big) but I'm now realizing its too small! I wonder if it's possible to re-size HDD partition without reformatting and re-install my Windows 8. So that is my question, Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8 without having to re-format? I've used the Norton Partition Magic and Disk Management to make this happen but there doesn't seem to be any options to make it happen. Thanks for any help you guys can give regarding my question. I've worked hard to optimize my current install of Windows 8 and would hate to start all over again.

• How do I program a hardware button on my laptop?

  So I have a set of touch screen buttons on the top of my laptop's keyboard, (one turns on power save mode, one disables/enables the mouse touch pad, one toggles the wifi adapter, and two turns the volume up/down). However there's another one that opened a file backup utility that came with my laptop. Since I bought my laptop, I've uninstalled that utility, rendering this button useless. Would it be possible to reprogram that button to open another file or program on my computer? And if so, what are the requirements and how would I go about doing it? Thanks in advance!

  Does anyone use latexmk on OS X with either Preview or another PDF, dvi, or PS reader? I've recently switched from Linux and installed MacTex to use Latex. I am used to using Vim to edit the source file and having latex -pvc running so that it will update the preview on xdvi upon save. I am aware that I can run xdvi using XQuartz, but I have it setup to run fullscreen, so it is not very useful when I don't want to go into X11 mode altogether. The problem with using Preview is that it will only update from the PDF file when Preview receives focus. I could not figure out if there is a command to trigger Preview to reload the PDF file.

• How do I copy files in Jolicloud from one drive to another

  I'm running Jolicloud 1.2 from a USB stick. I clicked the "run but don't install option" at the start up menu and then i created an account. It says I am logged in as guest mode. How can I copy files from my original c:\ which is listed in the file manager to my usb stick. There's no button and drag and drop doesn't work is there a way to get into terminal? Is it perhaps restricted because I am a "guest"?

• Exchange stops working after changing System Time

  I am currently in a situation where the system time of my windows machine differs 6 hours from the actual local time. I tried chaning the system time of my windows machine 6 hours back to match the actual local time. The issue is, when the system time is changed, Exchange stops working as it wont start anymore. When i change the time back Exchange works again. Here is the error that it shows when im trying to open the management console after changing the system time. The Follwing error occured while attempting to connect to the specified server "servername". The attempt to connect to http://servername/PowerShell using "Kerberos" authentication failed: Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message: Access is denied. • VPC on Windows 7 very slow network

  I have a Windows 2003 virtual machine which I use for website testing. I've just installed Windows 7 and am using the new version VPC (not xp mode). When I try to copy a file - I need to copy some big databases across - I get a file copy speed of about 20k per sec. Copying from one PC to another on the real network transfers files at 13mb per second. Any ideas what may be causing this? I've turned off differential network compression on win 7. The Virtual HD is on a seperate physical drive to the OS. Running Windows 7 64 bit on a dual xeon with 16gb ram and 10,000 rpm drives. Tried installing VPC 2007 but windows blocks it running saying its not compatable. Many thanks for any ideas.

  I have a website, and the users recommend via email to another persons, so the mail come from my site, but I need to appear the user as sender, but "via" mydomain. The logically and what lists management software and companies do is differ the "MAIL FROM" SMTP command and the "From" header (like mailchimp, for example). So I want to DKIM sign a mail with mydomain.com, even if the From header says another domain. is possibly this? I am using postfix with Debian GNU/Linux, and in this case using dkim-filter and dk-filter.

• How to Completely delete my USB thumbstick?

  I own a Kingston thumb-stick. I have installed a Google Chrome OS image to it so I could try it out. When it did so, it created 3 partitions (I backed everything and the software that installed Chrome OS delete my thumb-stick completely and created 3 partitions). Now I want to get it back to 1 partition but when I go to Disk Management, it will not let me "extend" the partition. I have tried different partitioning tools but they didn't recognize my thumb-stick anyway. I have also tried DiskPart to no avail. Is there any software that will completely format my thumb-stick so I would only have 1 partition?

• Hardware recommendations for building an Ubuntu encrypted file server

  I would like to build a file server for my home network using Ubuntu. It will serve files from RAID1 configured disks, either in the OS or in hardware. It will be connected to a Gigabit ethernet LAN. The disks will use an encrypted file system. It will serve samba shares. I would like a recommendation on what kind of processing power/memory I would need to build a box that would be able to sustain the full capacity of the Gigabit ethernet connection in a file transfer for a single connection with the overhead of serving from an encrypted disk. I'm not looking to build a dream server, I just want enough processing capacity for high performance (and reliable) file sharing and spend as little as possible for it. This may be tangential, but what kind of hardware would I need to have a server be able to reliably go into a low power mode when no requests are being made of it?

• Need to scale quickly. Which cloud service should I use?

  Traffic to my facebook app is growing at an insane rate and I need some suggestions on how to scale. I'm probably not going to even be able to keep it running by the day's end, as it's hosted from my already overloaded dedicated server. I need to either move it to its own box or a cloud service like e2c. Something like e2c seems like the way to go, but my server admin skills are terrible. Is there a good front end management UI for e2c or another hosting service that is comparable in cost that is fully managed?   I have two windows XP machines in my home networks, connected with ASUS WL-500gp V2 which also used as internet router. Problem is: while I have both computers normally goes to internet (used DHCP, static routes is ON, routing table is empty, operation mode is Home Gateway). I see both computers listed on the Network Neighborhood on 1st computer (wired to router), can enter to my own computer, but can not enter to other. I see only one computer (2nd) on the Network Neighborhood on 2nd computer (connected thru Wi-Fi), can enter to itself, getting error when trying to enter 1st computer address in address line (like \My1stComp). What is the problem? I totally crazy founding problem about 3 months.

• OOMK kills mysql and apache when there is still a lot[?] of mem

  let me first say that I'm pretty new ti *nix systems and even more to server management. Anyway, I've got a little problem. I got VPS with 1gb mem, system is debian 6. I have few sites running on it, though some load can only be caused by one of them. Recently, OOMK started to kill mysql, causing wp and phpbb giving error that it can't connect to mysql server. Error itself is not good, especially if it happens at night and site becomes unavailable until I wake up and restart mysql. I have probably bad line in my cron which can be cause of it all (again, I'm new to it) */20 * * * * sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches Well, if you need any information, let me know, since I don't really know which information can be useful here. Also, I'd like to know if it's not too bad to have above cron task.

• Windows program to remove titlebar, frame, etc from a window?

  I like playing computer games in windowed mode, as opposed to full screen. I don't like staring at the title bar, frame, and other UI junk. I also don't like seeing other stuff on my desktop around the window. Is there a simple Windows program that will strip the UI chrome off of an arbitrary window from some other application? Extra points for an easy way to put a black screen underneath the window, hiding the desktop. Note: I'm looking specifically to handle windows that are smaller than my desktop size. There's a variety of 'windowed maximized' options that make a window exactly the desktop size, and positioned so all the UI decorations are off screen. (E.g.: ShiftWindow). I'm trying to strip all the decorations away from a window that's smaller than desktop size.
