  Scenario Multiple application servers host web services written in Java, running in SpringSource dm Server. To implement a new requirement, they will need to query a read-only PostgreSQL database. Issue To support redundancy, at least two PostgreSQL instances will be running. Access to PostgreSQL must be load balanced and must auto-fail over to currently running instances if an instance should go down. Auto-discovery of newly running instances is desirable but not required. Research I have reviewed the official PostgreSQL documentation on this issue. However, that focuses on the more general case of read/write access to the database. • MDX: How To Aggregate Hierarchy Level Members With Same Name

  Greetings, I am new to MDX, and am having trouble understanding how to perform an aggregation on a hierarchy level with members that have the same names. This query is particular to Microsoft Analysis Services 2000 cubes. I have a given hierarchy dimension with levels defined as follows: [Segment].[Flow].[Segment Week] Within the [Segment Week] level, I have the following members: [Week- 1] [Week- 2] [Week- 3] ... [Week- 1] [Week- 2] [Week- 3] The members have the same names, but are aligned with a different [Flow] in the parent level. So, the first occurrence of the [Week- 1] member aligns with [Flow].[A] while the second occurrence of [Week- 1] aligns with [Flow].[B]. What I am trying to do is aggregate all the members within the [Segment Week] level that have the same name. In SQL terms, I want to GROUP BY the member names within the [Segment Week] level. • 405: Method Not Allowed WCF

  I can perfectly call a WCF web method from localhost. I published to this server: http://luiscarlosch.com/WebFormClean.aspx (only firefox or chrome) with the Visual Studio publishing tool and it works fine. The problem is when a try to access it from another computer. I get the 405: Method Not Allowed. But It doest make sense because It works fine when i access it remotely from the publisher computer as I said. Any idea? • ria entity remove bug

  hello, I am trying out the ria services and I am experiencing this problem that seems very strange to me. I am creating a new entity of type "House" and add it to context without saving the context so the id of the new entity is 0, after i remove this entity and add another new entity of type "House" again and again without saving the context, here comes the weird part, now I have an entity of type "City" which holds entityset of all "Houses" in that city, so to put the newly created entity "House" into the city i do something like this - house.City = city, where house is type "House" and city is type "City", afte this step a check the context and suddenly there are 2 entities of type "House" with id 0, one of them is the one I have deleted at the beginning. Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it?? thank you Greg

• Program seems to get stuck ?

  I have a Java program, I did some change and the strange thing is no matter what I do now, it will output the same result before my change, I looked into my system (Windows Vista), and clicked on "Generate a system health report", the result says : Symptom : A service is reported as having an unexpected error code Cause : One or more services has failed. The service did not stop gracefully, suggesting the service may have crashed or one of its components stopped in an unsupported way. Details : Service exited with code not equal to 0 or 1077 Resolution : Restart the service It doesn't say which service, and I defragmented my drives a few times, it still gave me the same report. I also checked my memory, it says no problem with ram. Everything else is ok, I re-started the windows a few times, got more free space on my C: drive, yet the Java program is still not responding to my new changes, unless I intentionally make a mistake, it gives me compile error, but if it can compile successfully, it still gives me the results before the change. What can I do to fix this ? Frank

• Silverlight data-driven application with NHibernate

  Hi Guys, this is more of a subjective Question, but I'll ask it anyway. I'm about to develop a very data-centric application that has to run inside the browser. The frontend will be Silverlight, backed by a Fluent NHibernate service that runs server side. The problem here is: Wherever I look for data-driven silverlight app I wind up finding Silverlight RIA services examples, but nothing on how to build this without some ADO.NET stuff involved. I have little to no knowledge in WCF so far, but from the limited research I did it seems like WCF is pretty much the only way to let the client talk to the server. Are there any tutorials/best practices on how to write a Silverlight MVVM app that provides CRUD for a non-EF database? Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks PS: I can't use .NET remoting. The backend has to run on IIS6 :(

• How would you implement database updates via email?

  I'm building a public website which has its own domain name with pop/smtp mail services. I'm considering giving users the option to update their data via email - something similar to the functionality found in Flickr or Blogger where you email posts to a special email address. The email data is then processed and stored in the underlying database for the website. I'm using ASP.NET and SQL Server and using a shared hosting service. Any ideas how one would implement this, or if it's even possible using shared hosting? Thanks

• Record locking problem between linux and Windows

  I need to run a bunch of old DOS FoxPro / Clipper applications in linux under DOSEMU. The programs access their "databases" located on a network server (could be a Windows or Linux server) Actually, the programs ran fine, but I cannot manage to make the record locking work as supposed: I can run a program in two terminals (or the server and any terminal for instance) and lock the same record in both. Now, I'm using Tiny Core Linux as terminal and Windows XP as server, accesing the shared files via CIFS and the latest DOSEMU (1.4.0), but I tried with various combinations of server (Ubuntu 7 to 9, Damn Small Linux, XP) <- protocol (CIFS, samba, various versions of smbclient) <- client (same as server) with no luck I tried to configure the server part to work without oplocks in samba (after reading the entire O'Reilly Samba book locking chapter in http://oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch05_05.html ) and in XP (\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\UseOpportunisticLocking = 0) but the problem persist. • ACTION_MY_PACKAGE_REPLACED not received

  I am using ACTION_MY_PACKAGE_REPLACED to receive when my app is updated or resinstalled. My problem is that the event is never triggered (I tried Eclipse and real device). • Configuring IoC container from modules/plug-ins ?

  Hi guys, i am in big dilema.. I am working on highly modular web app in ASP.NET MVC 2 (in fact, core will be super lightweight, all work on modules/plugins). I found MEF pretty useful for modules discovery, but i dont want to us it as IoC container. There is pretty good chance that I will need advanced features of "true" IoC container, so I would like to use Unity. And here is the problem : how to allow modules to configure container (programatically) = register their own types (mvc controllers, custom implementations of services...) at application start without making hard dependency on Unity in all modules ? I know about Common Service Locator project, and it seems pretty good, but this interface co container only allows resolving types, not registering them (afaik). I really hope you can understand my point, I know my english is terrible (I am from non english speaking country :) Thanks a lot !

• Unable to connect to sql database only from asp

I tried checking the event log for errors, but found nothing. Or more precisely, I did find local an activation permission error, but this was fixed once I added local launch/activation permission for Network Service to the Machine Debug Manager via the component services tool. • Deploying Multiple Environments in Spring-MVC

  Currently all web apps are deployed using seperate config files: <!-- <import bean.... production/> --> <import bean... development/> This has disadvantages, even if you only need to swap out one config file, that I'm sure everyone is familiar with (wondering what just deployed without searching through XML is one of them) I want to add Logging to my application that basically says 'RUNNING IN PRODUCTION MODE', with a description of the services deployed and what mode they are working in. RUNNING IN PRODUCTION MODE Client Service - Production Messaging Service - Local and so on... Is this possible in Spring using a conventional deployment (putting a war on a server)? What other things do people do to manage deployments and software configurations? If not, what other ways could you achieve something similar?

• Can someone describe some DI terms to me?

  I'm in the process of writing a DI framework for PHP 5, and I've been trying to find the 'official' definitions of some words in relation to dependency injection. Some of these words are 'context' and 'lifecycle'. And also, what would I call the object that gets created/injected? Finally, what is the difference between components and services, and which term (if either) should I call the objects that can be injected? I've read Martin Fowler's article and looked through other DI frameworks (Phemto, Spring, Google Guice, Xyster, etc.), but I want to know what you think. Thanks!

• Converting MS Word Documents to PDF in ASP.NET

  Similar questions have been asked, but nothing exactly like mine, so here goes. We have a collection of Microsoft Word documents on an ASP.NET web server with merge fields whose values are filled in as a result of user form submissions. After the field merge, the server must convert the document to PDF and stream it down to the browser. Our first inclination was to use the Visual Studio Tools for Office API; however, we ran into this warning from Microsoft: Microsoft does not currently recommend, and does not support, Automation of Microsoft Office applications from any unattended, non-interactive client application or component (including ASP, ASP.NET, DCOM, and NT Services), because Office may exhibit unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run in this environment. It looks like the field manipulation can be done using the Open XML SDK, but what's the best way to convert Word 2007 documents to PDF without opening Word? The optimal solution would be low-cost, scalable, have a low memory footprint, be easy to deploy, and have a .NET API.

• Can default Symfony form-save actions be used to post data via AJAX?

  I was playing around with Symfony, jQuery, jqGrid & AJAX. For each new post submission, I am doing the foll: adding a routing entry in routing.yml defining a new action in the Actions file for the module. THis reads params, assigns values & saves the object As in the case of jqGrid, the 'Add Row' form is not a Symfony form. Is there a way to fool Symfony and post data to the executeCreate action to store a new entry. If not, does Symfony provide a way to quickly generate web services for AJAX requests for each of the modules? Is this a sensible feature? What I am going to have to do other-wise, is to create routing create a new Action get all parameters instantiate object assign values & save Any help in doing this faster will be appreciated. • Can I update an iOS Enterprise App in the background like an App Store app can?

  I have an iOS enterprise app that we are wirelessly distributing to our devices. Currently the app polls our server once a day to see if there is an app update. If there is, we try to install it by having the app call the following code: NSURL *installUrl = [NSURL URLWithString:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"itms-services://?action=download-manifest&url=%@", plistUrl]]; [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:installUrl]; This causes the app to prompt the user with an alert dialog to install the update. If they click install, the app closes and the update is downloaded and installed. I am wondering if there is anything for enterprise apps for iOS 7 similar to the AppStore's automatic updates? I would like to be able to update our app without the user having to press an update button and be able to update at a time when the user won't have to wait for it to install.

• Ad hoc network between iPhone and non iPhone devices???

  Is it possible to set up a ad hoc network between an iPhone and a totally different device like camera,scanner or printer and build a data tunnel between them to exchange data or services. I believe iPhone does not have the provision of creating an ad hoc network. So i am assuming that the other device are the initiator of the ad hoc network. I tried doing the same with a mac book and iPhone and i could surf on the phone after enabling internet sharing. But i wanted to make sure that its possible with other devices as well I believe the upcoming WiFi Direct is a way to do it.

• Avoid hourglass mouse cursor when calling a web-service?

  I don't know if this is a general web-services issue or just my specific scenario, which is a WPF application with a DispatcherTimer calling a web-service method. Whenever the timer is called, the mouse cursor automatically changes to an hourglass cursor. The processing of the call is very short and happens every 3 seconds, so the user experience is that every 3 seconds the mouse filckers as an hourglass for a split-second and then goes back to the normal cursor representation. How can I avoid this inconvenience? Thanks.

• How do I prove to a client/advertiser that my site's analytics numbers are what I say they are?

  I have been asked to provide recommendations on "Verified Analytics" for the next iteration of my company's site. Verified to mean that when we sell ad space, it's based on a number of page-views, and the people who buy that space want a way to verify that the numbers we give them are the actual numbers we're delivering. I have turned to The Google and the only services I can find for this sort of thing revolve around Google Analytics and the sale of a domain name. I export my analytics numbers to a PDF, have Google email the PDF to my auctioneer, and they look for signs of tampering. If no signs of tampering are found they put a little "Verified" badge on the domain auction. (Here) Other than this, and something similar on another domain sales site, I haven't found anything like what I've been asked to find. Currently we are using Google Analytics, however I've been also asked to recommend a replacement for that based on the ability to be verified. I'd rather just stick with Google Analytics since we also use Google for advertising.
