  • external display in Ubuntu 13.04

    I have had a look on series of similar topics but I could not find a right answer. Currently, I bought laptop Dell latitude E6530 and installed Ubuntu 13.04 (64 bit) alongside with Windows 7 (I could not get rid of it because of some special programs for work). Ubuntu worked well, however, it did not detect the external displays (Dell 23" and Dell 19") no matter I plugged them before or after booting. Edited: I connected my laptop to those external displays through a laptop dock. I went to Settings- Display, the displays were there, but when I enabled them, Ubuntu logged off automatically. No external display was detected. In addition, the laptop screen sometimes was detected as Dell 23" I got an advice from similar topic that nvidia driver should be updated to version 313 or 319. I upgraded driver and the unity launcher disappeared, main display resolution turned to 640*480 and none of external displays was detected. I tried to use additional drivers, but when I turned it on, it told me that there was no driver to be used. Could some one tell me what should I do ? Edited : options vmwgfx enable_fbdev=1

  • USB Ports In Wrong Mode, How To Use usbmodeswitch?

    I haven't had access to my USB ports as media devices for a couple days now. I've been reading and researching everything I can find but I can't find a good guide for usbmodeswtich or usbms that I can decipher. The USB's are fine for power, but won't support my android phone as a media device, which is killing me because I use adb everyday, and won't support my plug and play mouse any longer. Not sure what caused the switch, though I think it may be related to the suspend issue I've read about, but the solutions in those threads I read also didn't work. Below is my system information and details.   • How to restore one contact from Address Book with Time Machine

    I want to restore one contact from my Address Book with Time Machine. To do so, I select the contact in Address Book. Then, I press the Time Machine icon in the dock. Then my address book is "taken into space". However, when I browse back in time (either pressing the arrow back, or selecting a time on the right), the contact details do not change. And I am sure the data has been changed between dates. Also, when I do press restore, it's still the new data, not the backup. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? I'm using OS X 10.6.3 in combination with a external USB drive on an iMac.

    I've already clicked on "Emulate Mobile Features" and everything has been compiled. I've also set the mobile previewer settings to iPhone 4's dimensions and features. However, when i click on the mobile previewer, a new window pops up but it goes into a "Not Responding" mode after a while. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? To be honest, I'm afraid of the difficulty curve required in learning UDK, but I am interested in developing a game for it.

    I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 (dual-boot) docked in a docking station with 2 DVI outputs. It took me a week of tinkering to get the dual external monitors to work in Ubuntu, and I had to disabled the "Optimus" feature in the BIOS. But now neither external monitor is detected in Windows, and the resolution is also very low. Do you know how I can successfully dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on this machine using my 2 external DVI monitors?   • Is there an application that can automatically set Graphics Properties when docking?

    I have a dual display setup with my laptop (Dell, with integrated graphics, WinXP). The problem is that whenever I hook up the laptop to the monitor I have to go to Graphics Properties (Intel Graphics Media Driver for Mobile) and set the display resolution, window position, etc. Note that this screen is different than the built-in one you usually see in WinXP. 1) Is there an app that can save display settings properly so they will come back when I dock again? 2) Barring this, run a script or a macro to automatically set up the display the way I want it. 3) Or, can I write a .Net program that does this for me? Extra points if there is an Open source app that can do this.

    I have an HDTV that I'm hooking up via DVI to HDMI from my Mac mini. In my struggle to eliminate overscan I managed to set the screen resolution to something not supported by the tv. How do I change the resolution without that screen attached? Specifically my tv says it's "720p and 1366 x 768 Resolution". The 720p resolution option in OS X made for a ton of overscan (couldn't see menubar or dock at all). So I tried something x 768 and managed to shoot myself in the foot with an unsupported resolution. I thought it was okay to experiment since a resolution change times out if you don't accept it. Apparently that didn't happen for some reason. I've already deleted the com.apple.windowserver.plist in /Library/Preferences as I saw suggested in other places, with no effect.

  • Top down space game control problem

    As the title suggests I'm developing a top down space game. I'm not looking to use newtonian physics with the player controlled ship. I'm trying to achieve a control scheme somewhat similar to that of FlatSpace 2 (awesome game). I can't figure out how to achieve this feeling with keyboard controls as opposed to mouse controls though. Any suggestions? I'm using Unity3d and C# or javaScript (unityScript or whatever is the correct term) works fine if you want to drop some code examples. Edit: Of course I should describe FlatSpace 2's control scheme, sorry. You hold the mouse button down and move the mouse in the direction you want the ship to move in. But it's not the controls I don't know how to do but rather the feeling of a mix of driving a car and flying an aircraft. It's really well made.   • Thunderbird 3.0 refuses to start on Mac OS X?

    I just downloaded Thunderbird 3.0 on my Macbook Pro running Leopard, and installed it in /Applications. When I attempt to start it, the icon opens on the Dock as normal, but I get the following dialog. I don't have a ~/Library/Application Support/Thunderbird directory at all, let alone a .parentlock file. While I didn't expect it to help, I did reboot my system. And sign out and back in. And close all programs besides Thunderbird. Earlier versions of Thunderbird have worked just fine.

  • Cannot view, use, or open CDs or DVDs in Ubuntu 12.04

    I am fairly new to Ubuntu 12.04 and I have encountered a rather irritating problem. Whenever I insert a CD or DVD (whether it have data, music, movies, or nothing at all), nothing pops up saying "you have inserted a CD", "play with Rhythmbox?" etc. It doesn't show the CD in the launcher/dock or anything of the sort. This is especially peculiar because not only do I have a standard IDE built-in optical drive, but I have an external USB optical drive. Neither work. In addition, whenever I go to "Computer///" and I click (double click, right click, or even left click) on "CD/DVD Drive" nothing happens, when I right click and select "Open" nothing happens either [for either of the two drives (both are listed in Computer///)] And if I insert a blank disk and go to a disk burning program such as Brasero, and try to burn to the drive it detects no CDs or DVDs of any kind.   • Ubuntu 11.10 w/ Cinnamon - Icons are gone and pictures do not display

    I'm new on this site and new to using Ubuntu and all. I currently have Ubuntu 11.10 and Cinnamon along with it. I've recently downloaded only a few applications, like the Adobe shockwave as well as a few games. After the downloads, the icons for the windows (the close, minimize, and maximize) are nothing but streaks of colours, and now just plain black, picture previews in my picture folder is gone, some icons on the panels are missing, and icons in the control center are gone. I'm sure more are gone, but that's the ones that I see often. I'm not sure what caused this to happen?? Please get back to me soon! I'm worried about what has happened. ): This is my only laptop to get online. I have no other way besides the library but that takes too long.. EDIT: Okay, I had asked my sister for some help and she helped me restore my minimize, maximize, and close button but I still haven't figured out how to show the icons in the cinnamon dock (which I have set at the top of the window) and how to have my pictures show up again. All of my pictures are just blank and I can't even preview them. They still have their file names but that is it. I'm not sure what has happened. I haven't downloaded any new apps as of the new edit.

  • Ubuntu Unity (64-bit) Bugs on Nvidia dual screen [closed]

    On my work computer I have upgraded 10.04 to 10.10 and now to 11.04. Upgrades have mostly worked well and the dual screen setup is almost working. There are however a couple of annoying bugs which I tried to report but the bug reporting tool told me to ask about the bugs here. Here's what I have found: Auto-hide stops working. It doesn't seem to matter which application is maximised/covering the dock, it just stays on top. I have tested changing the autohide settings with no result. Scenario: One maximised window on each screen. If I now try to drag the window that doesn't have focus by dragging the top of the window nothing happens. I can also not give the window focus by clicking the top bar, I have to click inside the window and then I can drag the window. If I unmaximise the window with focus it does work and I can both change focus and drag the window directly by clicking the top of the maximised window. Any bug fixes coming for these issues? Any work-arounds?
