  • How can I create the XML::Simple data structure using a Perl XML SAX parser?

    Summary: I am looking a fast XML parser (most likely a wrapper around some standard SAX parser) which will produce per-record data structure 100% identical to those produced by XML::Simple. Details: We have a large code infrastructure which depends on processing records one-by-one and expects the record to be a data structure in a format produced by XML::Simple since it always used XML::Simple since early Jurassic era. An example simple XML is: <root> <rec><f1>v1</f1><f2>v2</f2></rec> <rec><f1>v1b</f1><f2>v2b</f2></rec> <rec><f1>v1c</f1><f2>v2c</f2></rec> </root> And example rough code is: sub process_record { my ($obj, $record_hash) = @_; # do_stuff } my $records = XML::Simple->XMLin(@args)->{root}; foreach my $record (@$records) { $obj->process_record($record) }; As everyone knows XML::Simple is, well, simple. And more importantly, it is very slow and a memory hog—due to being a DOM parser and needing to build/store 100% of data in memory. So, it's not the best tool for parsing an XML file consisting of large amount of small records record-by-record. However, re-writing the entire code (which consist of large amount of "process_record"-like methods) to work with standard SAX parser seems like an big task not worth the resources, even at the cost of living with XML::Simple. I'm looking for an existing module which will probably be based on a SAX parser (or anything fast with small memory footprint) which can be used to produce $record hashrefs one by one based on the XML pictured above that can be passed to $obj->process_record($record) and be 100% identical to what XML::Simple's hashrefs would have been. I don't care much what the interface of the new module is; e.g whether I need to call next_record() or give it a callback coderef accepting a record.

  • What would you suggest as a high school first language?

    Edit by OA: After reading some answers I'll just update the question a little. At first I put it a little bluntly, but some of those gave me some good arguments which have to be taken into consideration while making a stand on this one. (these are mostly picked up from comments and answers below). A few things to take into account: to many pupils this is a first programming language - at this stage most of them have trouble grasping a difference between data types, variable passing, ... and whatnot, less alone pointers and similar 'low level stuff' :) they will all have to pass this to get into next grade (well, big majority of them anyway) not all of them have computers at home, not all of them are willing to learn this, less alone interested in - so the concepts have to be taught on a finite time scale in school hours (as well as practice on computers) free literature is a bonus - the teacher will make some scripts and handaways, but still ... I wouldn't like to bear the parents with the burden of buying expensive literature (also, english is not a native language here ... and although they are all learning it, their ability to read it fluently is somewhat questionable) somebody gave an argument - "a language which does not get in the way of ideas" - good one accessibility on different platforms in not expecially important at this point - although most of the suggested ones are available on win as well as linux - not many macs in this part of europe (their prices are sky high for anything but specialised usage) I will check what are the licencing issues on ms express editions about using it massively in high schools for purposes like this - if someone has any info about this, please, do not be shy with it :) A friend of mine, informatics teacher - in EU it comes as something as junior cs teacher, in a local high school asked me what I thought about what should be the first language pupils should be taught? It is a technical school (a little more oriented towards mathematics than the gymnasium, but not computer oriented totally). So I'm asking you - what do you think should be the first language pupils are exposed to in highschool? They have been teaching Pascal so far, but she's not sure that's a good course. She thought about switching to C (which I resented; considering not all pupils have interests in programming, to start with, and should be taught something higher level since they are just gripping the idea of a loop and such ... for a start), I suggested python or ruby (preferably py since it handles all paradigms). What is your opinion on this one? I looked, but didn't find a similar question on SO, so if there is one, please just point me towards it.   • DRUPAL, Views: exposed filter.. how can I unselect all tags ?

    hi, I'm using Drupal, Views, tag exposed filter and I would like to allow my customer to select the default tags from back-end. However when he selects some tags is not possible anymore to unselect all of them. See initial picture: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/72686/Picture%201.png Now all the tags are unselected, but if I select just one of them, then I cannot anymore come back to the initial configuration. (at least one tag remains selected). How can I fix this ? thanks

  • HMVC or PAC - how to handle shared abstractions/models?

    In HMVC/PAC, what's the recommended way to code if two or more triads/agents share a common model/abstraction? Do you instantiate a new instance of that model wherever needed, and propogate a change in one to all the other instances via the controllers? Or do instantiate one model at some common upper level, and inject that instance wherever needed? (Or neither if I'm missing something fundamental about these patterns?)

  • 100% CPU load on Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS 64bit

    I have 2 days since I am trying to fix this issue, with no success. The server is a mysql database server. Hardware: DELL Poweredge 1950, 2x Intel Xeon Quad Core E5345 @ 2.33GHz, 16 Gb mem, 2x 146Gb SAS (software RAID1) Software: Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS, MySQL 5.1.41 Issue: while mysql is not used and runs with no database, everything seems alright. As soon as I install a database, it has the reason to bring all 8 cores in 100% with low memory consumption. So, you can imagine the load average goes high (I saw 212 load average for the first time). The server doesn't become unresponsive, but you can see it's slow while browsing the project installed. Additional info: the database used is not more than 24MB and it was moved from a server with less resources and a lot more larger databases. So it's not the database/project. my.cnf is not a reason also, as I used both default one and the one I use on the same distribution on another server.What is interesting is that mysql doesn't close any process and runs to the limit of the max_connections. Logs are quiet. Nothing there. I switched to this Ubuntu version after I suspected some problems in the newly Ubuntu 11.10 server. This one worked alright for an hour after I made a kernel upgrade to 3.0.1 (it was using the memory also) I tested disk speed and seems alright. Some more output on the running server: dstat -cndymlp -N total -D total 3: htop command: Idea? Did anyone meet the same problem? Any fix you can think of?

  • How to embed/hardcode SRT subtitles into mp4 videos with VLC?

    I'm looking for a way to "burn in" or render/rembed/hardcode subtitles (from an SRT file) into an MP4 video with VLC. But no matter what options I use, it never works properly. I get a file that plays video way too fast (audio is normal), or one that plays normally, but actually does not have embedded subtitles. Also, with some options (like the one below) it does not play in QuickTime, only in VLC. So the main question is: how can I make this work in VLC? Secondary questions are: How do I decide which options I should set? Which settings are best if I want to leave the file bitrate etc. the same as much as possible, only embed subtitles? It seems I cannot leave the field empty or Video/Audio unchecked, so I guess I would first need to figure out the original audio and video bitrate. What do the "Scale" and "Channels" options mean? ... none of which are answered within the VLC documentation.   • How do you get log4j to roll files based on date and size?

    So log4j comes with two existing log rollers: RollingFileAppender, and DailyRollingFileAppender. Has anyone heard of an appender that does both of what the former do? I need an appender that will roll log files based on filesize, but also append the current date to it. I've been thinking about creating my own appender, but if there is already one that has been created, why not save the time and use that one?

  • Windows Server - share files without access for administrator

    We have a MS Windows Server 2008 R8 based server that is administrated by our IT department. We would like to achieve two things simultaneously: A folder on the server, containing several thousand files (new files added frequently) that is accessible to some ActiveDirectory users (e.g. board of directors) but is not accessible by IT department employees IT department employees still maintain rights to administrate the server, including installing new software and services We already checked some solutions: Using NTFS access rights. Unfortunately IT (members of "Administrators" group) can set themselves as new owners of the files and change the permissions so that they gain access to the files. Enabling EFS. Unfortunately even if you do not allow IT to access files, they still can disable EFS completely because they have administrative rights. Moreover as far as I know you have to manually add permissions for all users but the owner for each new file - very inconvenient. Creating a new role for the IT department that has all the privileges apart from taking ownership of files. Unfortunately if you're not a member of the Administrators group, you cannot install new software, no matter what privileges you add to the role. TrueCrypt - nice free encryption software, but with poor sharing capabilities. You can either mount an encryption container on the server (and then IT has access to its contents) or you mount them locally but only one user can mount it for writing. AxCrypt - free encryption software that enables file-by-file encryption on the server. There are some disadvantages though - you have to manually encrypt each new file added. The files have their extensions changes. You can only set one password for all files (so all users have to know this one password). Any other ideas? Our budget is limited so enterprise-class software from Symantec or PGP would probably be not an option.

  • ESXi 5 VM Putty session hangs, vSphere client timing out

    First of all I believe this is a ESXi issue but let me know if you have seen this. It started about a year ago when I noticed occasionally when I putty via SSH to my VM guests, if I do anything that makes it to display a lot of things at once, the session will hang and I have to start a new one quite often only to find the same behaviour. What I meant by display a lot of things can be any of the following: 1) tail -f filename 2) Paste a long command 3) less filename If I type in one character at a time this won't happen. I tried searching online and it always point me to flow control settings and the various suggestions I've tried have never been able to resolve the issue. Since last week, I've noticed I'm not able to connect to my POP3 server from Outlook (it's timing out from Outlook's perspective). Today I tried to connect to the ESXi via vSphere client and it gives me a time out also. Exact behavior and error I saw is similar to the one posted at the following URL but the suggested technique also failed to resolve the issue. http://davidcocke.blogspot.hk/2012/02/unable-to-login-with-vsphere-client.html Has anyone experienced this before? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

  • Java: thread-safe RandomAccessFile

    Hi, After some serious googleing I found out that the RandomAccessFile-class is not thread-safe. Now I could use one semaphore to lock all reads and writes but I don't think that performs very well. In theory it should be possible to do multiple reads and one write at a time. How can I do this in Java? Is it possible at all? Thanks!
