• DD-WRT VPN error 800?

  I have set up a router with DD-WRT Mega on my Asus WL-500gP V2, and I can't connect to the VPN service. I have set it up according to the configuration on the DD-WRT wiki, so the server IP is set to 192.168.1.1, which is the address of the router, and I set up the client addresses to be 192.168.1.20-29. My chap secrets are set up correctly, and still, I get an error 800 on windows XP. As far as I can tell, it means my network is unreachable. The server responds to ping.

• Cost justification for buying a 32GB superfast Alienware M18x with a price tag of around £5K ($10K)

  When considering buying a laptop that’s going to cost me around £5,000 I really need to justify the purchase from a business perspective; my Lenovo W700 has served me very well for the last 2 years, it’s an extremely good machine and as solid as a rock (and as heavy), alas though it is limited to the 8GB. As SQL Server 2012 approaches and with my interest in working in the Business Intelligence space over the next year or two it is clear I need a powerful machine that I can run a full infrastructure though virtualised. My requirements For High Availability / Disaster Recovery research and demonstration Machine for a domain controller Four machines in a shared disk cluster (SQL Server Clustering active – active etc.) Five  machines in a file share cluster (SQL Server Availability Groups) For Business Intelligence research and demonstration Not entirely sure how many machine I want to run here, but it would be to cover the entire BI stack in an enterprise setting, sharepoint, sql server etc. For Big Data Research I have a fondness for the NoSQL approach to scalability and dealing with large volumes so I need a number of machines to research VoltDB, Hadoop etc. As you can see the requirements for a SQL Server consultant to service their clients well is considerable; will 8GB suffice, alas no, it will no longer do. I’m a very strong believer that in order to do your job well you must expense it, short cuts only cost you time, waiting 5 minutes instead of an hour for something to run not only saves me time but my clients time, I can do things quicker and more importantly I can demonstrate concepts. My W700 with the 8GB of RAM and SSD’s cost me around £3.5K two years ago, to be honest I’ve not got the full use I wanted out of it but the machine has had the power when I’ve needed it, it’s served me and my clients well. Alienware now do a model (the M18x) with 32GB of RAM; yes 32GB in a laptop! Dual drives so I can whack a couple of really good SSD’s in there, a quad core with hyper threading i7 and a decent speed. I can reduce the cost of the memory by getting it from Crucial, so instead of £1.5K for 32GB it will be around £900, I can also cost save on the SSD as well. The beauty about the M18x is that it is USB3.0, SATA 3 and also really importantly has eSATA, running VM’s will never be easier, I can have a removeable SSD with my VM’s on it and can plug it into my home machine or laptop – an ideal world! The initial outlay of £5K is peanuts compared to the benefits I’ll give my clients, I will be able to present real enterprise concepts, I’ll also be able to give training on those real enterprise concepts and with real, albeit virtualised machines.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what would cause this. I just did a clean install of win7 ultimate 32 bit. I don't do a lot with this pc. Mostly surf the web and that's when it happens. My only guess is that the power supply is failing and I need a new one. I wanted to check here and see if anyone else had some other idea before I bought a new one.   I got "IOError: [Errno 32] Broken pipe" while writing files in linux. I am using python to read each line a of csv file and then write into a database table. My code is f = open(path,'r') command = command to connect to database p = Popen(command, shell=True, stdin=PIPE, stdout=PIPE, stderr=PIPE, env=env) query = " COPY myTable( id, name, address) FROM STDIN WITH DELIMITER ';' CSV QUOTE '"'; " p.stdin.write(query.encode('ascii')) *-->(Here exactly I got the error, p.stdin.write(query.encode('ascii')) IOError: [Errno 32] Broken pipe )* So when I run this program in linux, I got error "IOError: [Errno 32] Broken pipe" . However this works fine when I run in windows7. Do I need to do some configuration in Linux sever? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.

• Can't access network share with name defined in hosts file

  I have a network share on a machine that I can only reach by IP address. I then defined an alias for the IP in my hosts file so I could use that instead of the IP but then I can't log on to the share, I just get the logon prompt again and again. So basically this: \\172.17.0.48\SomeShare works but this \\myalias\SomeShare doesn't. myalias is defined in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts as 172.17.0.48 myalias And I can use the alias for remote desktop without problems. Can anyone tell me why this doesn't work for fileshares?

  As the memory become really cheap now, a couple days ago I have updated my laptop memory to 12g. Plus I got my old desktop ,now I decide to build my own SharePoint farm at home. I decide to document the steps to build a simple SharePoint farm. I will use windows server 2008 r2 and VMware. In the first part of this series of building my own SharePoint farm. I will create my domain controller. Here are the steps to install it: Open the command line by going to run and type CMD and then type dcpromo in the command line. The AD Installation wizard will prompt and click next. 2. Click next as shown in the screenshot.   3. Select creates a new domain in a new forest and click next.      4. Type a domain name (e.g. ybbest.com) and click next. 5.In my case , I select Windows Server 2008 R2 forest Functional level and click next 6. Leave the default and click next.(If you have not make a static IP address , you need to do so now)      7.You might get scary prompt like the screenshot below , just ignore the message and click Yes.     8.Leave the default settings and click Next  9.Type a password when you need to restore your Domain        10.Click Next and restart your computer ,this will install your Domain Controller.

Here’s a screenshot tour of the most interesting new stuff, as well as answers to your questions. The most important question is should you install this version? And the answer is absolutely yes. Even if you don’t use IE, it’s better to have a newer, more secure version on your PC. What’s New Under the Hood in Release Candidate vs Beta? If you want to see the full list of changes with all the original marketing detail, you can read Microsoft’s Beauty of the Web page, but here’s the highlights that you might be interested in. Improved Performance – they’ve made a lot of changes, and it really feels faster, especially when using more intensive web apps like Gmail. Power Consumption Settings – since the JavaScript engine in any browser uses a lot of CPU power, they’ve now integrated it into the power settings, so if you’re on battery it will use less CPU, and save battery life. This is really a great change. UI Changes – The tab bar can now be moved below the address bar (see below for more), they’ve shaved some pixels off the design to save space, and now you can toggle the Menu bar to be always on. Pinned Sites – now you can pin multiple pages to a single taskbar button. Very useful if you always use a couple web apps together. You can also pin a site in InPrivate mode. FlashBlock and AdBlock are Integrated (sorta) – there’s a new ActiveX filtering that lets you enable plug-ins only for sites you trust. There’s also a tracking protection list that can block certain content (which can obviously be used to block ads).   The advantages of using the Oracle Metadata Services Repository as a central storage for the metadata. SCA has been available since the release of the Oracle SOA Suite 11g. This technology combines and orchestrates several SOA components inside an SCA composite, making design, development, deployment, and maintenance easier. SCA development is metadata-driven, meaning that metadata artifacts, such as Web Services Description Language (WSDL), XML Schema Definition (XSD), XML, others, define the composite's behavior. With the increased number of composites and the dependencies among them, it became necessary to manage all the metadata in an adequate way. This article will address the advantages of using the Oracle Metadata Services (MDS) repository as a central storage for the metadata. The MDS repository is a central part of the Oracle Fusion Middleware landscape, managing the metadata for several technologies, such as Oracle Application Development Framework (Oracle ADF), Oracle WebCenter, and the Oracle SOA Suite. This article is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of SCA and MDS. The second part describes some MDS tasks that help in the management of the SCA metadata files inside the repository.   My config is a DNS Server on Windows Server 2008 R2. My domain is on dyndns.org dynamic IP service. This server is a DNS server and a WebServer with IIS. When someone from outside network enter the site "http://domain.dyndns.org" within a webbrowser it is ok, but when someone try to enter "http://www.domain.dyndns.org" it doesn't find any website. So I would like to add a "www." record to my DNS. I did this: Added a A-Type record pointing to my server's local IP. Added a CNAME-Type record named "www" pointing to "domain.dyndns.org." Now I can enter the "www.domain.dyndns.org" from internal network, and it works, but when I enter this address from outside it doesn't work.

  I needed to add context menus to some tables of my intranet application. After trying some components I found one that does everything I need and has no overhead. In this posting I will show you how to use jQuery context menu plug-in and how to attach it to tables. I found context menu plug-in by Chris Domigan and it was very easy to integrate to my application (when comparing some other plug-ins that work only on demo pages and in simple scenarios). The following screenshot fragment shows simple context menu that we want to attach to our table. And when we click some menu option then something should happen too. :) Installing context menu plug-in Download plug-in (if download link is broken then open demo page and I think you know how to get plug-in from there). Copy jquery.contextmenu.js to your scripts folder. Include it in your masterpage or in the page where you plan to use context menus. Make sure plug-in is included correctly (use Firebug or some other tool you like). Save the page. Defining context menu Now let’s define context menu. Conclusion We saw than using jQuery with context menu component allows us easily create powerful context menus for our user interfaces. Context menu was very easy to define. We were also able to attach context menu to table and use ID of current row entity also in events of context menu. To achieve this we needed only some minor modifications in view and couple of lines of JavaScript.

  I'm located in Shanghai China and am trying to set up an SSH tunnel (or a reverse ssh tunnel?) to my brother's server located in the States. I'm using windows xp and he has a mac. We are both using wireless routers (not sure if this is relevant). He's given me the address and password (for his server, I think), and I've downloaded myentunnel (which he recommended), but am not sure what to do now. • Option 82 and dhcpd. "No free leases" for second computer

  There is DHCP server in network (isc-dhcpd-server-3.0 on FreeBSD 7.2) than gives one IP per switch port to every user via Option 82 The problem appears when user disconnects one of his computers and connects another(i.e notebook with different MAC address) then DHCPD puts to log "...network net1: no free leases", because there is record in leases file that this IP is already owned by another MAC. That second computer will have his IP only after default-lease-time (that is IIRC minimum 10min, and after 3min he usually calling support) or after deletion of dhcpd.leases file and restart of dhcpd. Is there a way to turn leases off at all, because we have strict binding between switch-port-ip?

  Hi there. I've setup a Windows 2008 Server in a Cloud Environment. I am able to RDP to this Windows Server ("aka CloudServer") in the Cloud Environment. When I establish PPTP VPN connection from the CloudServer back to our Windows Server ("aka OfficeServer"), my RDP session is dropped and it won't let me RDP back in. The only way how I can RDP to the CloudServer is using the DHCP ip address issued from the OfficeServer. What do I need to change on the CloudServer? Thanks in advance for your help! Jennifer

• Assistance in setting up new APC Smart-UPS RT on a new VMware enviroment

  I'm new to the realm of setting up a APC Smart-UPS RT 8000VA UPS with a management network card (AP9618). The project calls for the upgrade of the firmware for the network card to the newest and greatest. It also calls for the Powerchute Business Software to be installed with notifications setup per email for temperature, shutdown, and battery low. I know I'll have to use the serial cable to flash the firmware and install the software on one server 2003 box. Also on that server I'll have to install the software and setup the GUI (IP address) interface. Whats confusing the most is the whole process, and steps to use without taking down the network, which would be very bad. In flashing the firmware does it take down the UPS? Do i have to run BOOTP commands to setup the network card? Also no agents will be used on any of the VWware OS's and no SNMP trap will be used.

  Hi This isn't so much of a problem, but would like to know why this happens. we have a dedicated server running WHM. If I access the server via its IP address directly I am automatically redirected to http://xx.xxx.xx.xxx/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi I know how to edit this page (this isnt the problem) I'm just curious why I get redirected to this .cgi page, rather than simply remain @ xx.xxx.xx.xxx/ and view my default "landing page", if you like. What setting could I change so that if anyone visits my server IP, they do not get redirected to xx.xxx.xx.xxx/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi For instance if you visit 173.194.37.104 (google), you view the google home page, but URL remains the same. • Kickstart PXE Boot Installation not working

  I tried installing PXE Boot Installation Server on RHEL 6.0. I seem to have done everything according to the page: http://www.linux-sxs.org/internet_serving/pxeboot.html. In my case, the client boots, gets DHCP IP address from our server, connects to the Kickstart server too, but then nothing happens. It shows: Loading 192.168.1.101: pxe.linux.0 ..... 192.168.1.101 in my kickstart server. Did any one face such a situation? I'm using a test env on Oracle Virtualbox with DNS Server on RHEL 6.0, DHCP Server on CentOS 6.0 and Kickstart server on RHEL 6.0. The image I'm trying to install is that of REHL 6.0! In this post, I’d like to show you how to call the same web service in the cloud, aka Office365.In office365, it uses claims authentication as opposed to windows authentication for normal in-house SharePoint Deployment. • Get IIS 7.5 to listen on IPv6

  I'm using IIS on Windows 7, and I can't get it to bind to the IPv6 equivalent of 0.0.0.0 and 127.0.0.1 ([::] and [::1]) The first one gives me an error when trying to start the service that says The World Wide Web Publishing Service (WWW Service) did not register the URL prefix http://[::]:80/ for site 1. The site has been disabled. The data field contains the error number. The second one doesn't give any errors but doesn't listen on anything apart from 0.0.0.0 The bindings dropdown only has my teredo address (2001::) listed, and not my link local (fe80::) one.

  I'm migrating my current half-size rack to a full-size rack and want to take the opportunity to reorganize and sort our spaghetti-hell of ethernet cables. What system do you use for organising your cables? Do you use any tracking software? Do you physically label the cables? What are you identifying when you label each end? Mac address? Port number? Asset number? What do you use to label them? I was looking at a hand held labeler, but the wrap around laser printer sheets might work. The Brady ID PAL seems good, but it's pricey. Ideas?

At the moment we have a regular ADSL-router-firewall to provide local network access and a fixed IP address. I know there are enterprise-level VPN solutions, but these obviously won't be available to us because of the cost and complexity. What small-scale solutions are around that you could recommend, what would we need to deploy on the client side, and what would the clients need to do to access the VPN?   With upgrade of VMWare Player I suddenly found my Debian Lenny VM not getting IP address. Some DHCP issue maybe, I don't know. So I have to set it manually every boot in Player window, via: ifconfig eth0 down ifconfig eth0 192.168.175.128 netmask 255.255.255.0 up I usually start up VM and then connect to it via SSH, so this procedure bothers me. Sure I can add it to startup script, but is there some special place to enter these values? Like, some config file or so?

  I have a sonicwall site to site vpn. At one of the sites there is another Cisco vpn to another site. I need to route the traffic for the cisco vpn through the site to site from the other sonicwall site. Site A - 10.10.0.0 /16 network Site B - 192.168.1.0 /24 Sonicwall, A cisco vpn is on 192.168.1.226 address and has routes the 10.10.0.0 network to Site A. Site C - 192.168.2.0 /24 Sonicwall Site A-B VPN is working Site B-C VPN is working I need to get Site C to transmit the 10.10.0.0 traffic over the VPN to site B and then out the Cisco device.
