• Office 365 - unable to deactivate

  We are using Office 365 ProPlus 2013. A new user tried to activate their install and received the error that they had reached their install limit of 5 machines. Upon clicking the link the deactivate previous installs that appears in that error dialog, the user is taken to their Office software management tab. Usually, if the user has previous installs, they are listed here and the user is able to deactivate. However, in this case, previous installs do not appear and it seems something else may be the problem. I am looking for any suggestions as to what may be the problem, thanks.

  Is it possible to create a script/live distro that replaces some system32 files? To explain it a bit more in details: There is a company that has multiple computers (think in 100/1000's) and they all are missing the same system32 files since the company's software removed it. The systems are distributed all over the world and are managed by "normal" people who don't have any knowledge about computers. I want to create a usb stick that i can mail to all those people which contains a script that executes when you boot the usb. this script should replace the missing system32 files without any user input is this possible, and if so how could i manage this?

• Getting file system free space

  This isn't a problem as such, more a request for information based on ignorance of the Linux filesystem. The very short question is: How do I find out how much free and used space there is on the volume from which Ubuntu is running? More detail: I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 from a 64Gb USB3 stick, created from booting up a year-old Ubuntu 12.04 DVD and running Startup Disk Creator. The reason for this is that the Master Boot Record on my hard disk, holding Windoze 7, has gone belly-up, and whilst awaiting a recovery disk I'm running Ubunto off USB or DVD as a 'trial'. (And will continue to run Ubuntu after restoring Windoze, as I've rediscovered my love of the penguin :o)) After installing Ubuntu on the stick I ran the software update app, which downloaded some 450Mb of updates and took a couple of hours to install to the stick. A couple of times I got a message saying that disk space was short. So I looked in the file manager (or whatever it's called these days) and couldn't see the stick listed, just: SYSTEM hard disk (listed as 479Gb Filesystem) two other partitions that had been created by Windoze "4.3GB Filesystem" which when I try to open gives the error "Could not find /cow", and when I try to unmount it tells me I can't because it's not mounted - D'OH!! This is tangentially related to a previous question of mine about system tools, in that I'm trying to get control and knowledge of the system in the newest incarnation of Ubuntu.

• Unable to create a Windows 7 system image of a failing hard drive

  The hard disk of my one year old T400 Thinkpad has started failing periodic hardware tests. I get a "Targeted Read Test Failed" error. The "SMART short self test" times out. I am now trying to create a Windows 7 System image of the hard disk but it fails without giving any specific error messages. I tried using Comodo Backup but got an error (code 101117) there as well. I have copied the important files in Dropbox but would like to take a full System backup as I have plenty of software installed on the machine. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can take a backup of the system image ?

• Job queueing in Toast Titanium 10?

  I have a bunch of .MP4 video files I'm burning to DVD-Video using Toast Titanium 10 on my MacBook Pro. Right now, I'm doing them one at a time. Because my computer is several years old, encoding video for a single DVD takes approximately six hours. I've discovered that it appears I can encode the video directly to a .toast format — however, I have yet to figure out if I can burn these directly to DVD. Also, I have quite a bit of video left to burn, and even that method would require me intervening manually to start a new encoding or burn job every six hours. Would it be possible to somehow queue up multiple DVD-Video encoding jobs at once, and have the computer work through them automatically? The actual writing to DVD disc doesn't take nearly as long, and if I had all my video encoded for me to begin with my job would be a lot quicker. Maybe this can be accomplished with a different piece of software?

• Shrinking physical volumes in LVM on a Linux Guest in ESXi 5.0

  The problem: Linux guest (OpenSuse 12.1), with multiple virtual disks attached. 3 disks are in a logical volume, two of which are exactly 2TB. None of the disks are independent, and due to the backup software we use, cannot be independent. When the two 2TB virtual disks are "dependent", the snapshot fails stating that the file is too large for the datastore. When I put those two disks in independent mode, snapshots work fine (the other disk is 1.8TB). I have therefore concluded that even shrinking the two physical disks by 100GB should solve the problem, however I am having trouble conceptualizing how to go about getting those disks smaller without breaking the LVM entirely. The actual LV has 1.3TB free, so there is plenty of space to shrink with. What I need to accomplish: Deallocate 100GB from the two, 2TB virtual disks within the linux guest. Shrink the two virtual disks by 100GB within vsphere (not as complicated). Are there any vsphere/LVM gurus that can give me a clue?

• MVC: How to Implement Linked Views?

  I'm developing a java application to visualize time series. I need (at least) three linked views, meaning that interaction with one of them updates the others. The views are: A list represents the available and currently selected time series. The selected time series are used as input for subsequent computations. Changing the selection should update the other views. A line chart displays the available and selected time series. Time series should be selectable from here by clicking on them. A bar chart shows aggregated data on time series. When zooming in to a period of time, the line chart should zoom in to the same period (and vice versa). How to implement this nicely, from a software engineering point of view? I.e. I'd like to write reusable and clear, maintainable code. So I thought of the MVC pattern. At first I liked the idea of having the three view components observing my model class and to refresh views upon being notified. But then, it didn't feel right to store view related data in the model. Storing e.g. the time series selection or plot zoom level in the model makes implications about the view which I wouldn't want in a reusable model. On the other hand, having the controllers observe each other results in a lot of dependencies. When adding another view, I'd have to register all other views as observer of the new view and vice versa, passing around many references and introducing dependencies. Maybe another "model" storing only view-related data would be the solution?

• SIMPLEST way to set up password protection for a static site, with basic admin UI?

  I have a static site. I would like the simplest approach to password protecting a directory, with a basic admin UI for adding/removing users. I will have so few users that I don't care about performance. I don't care if it's PHP or Django or whatever, I just want a complete software package. Apache basic auth isn't good, because you can't log out. Nor is there a UI for adding users. I tried throwing everything behind Django auth and serving the files through Django. However, Chrome treats all my text/css headers as text/plain, so I don't get any stylesheets showing. I can't use mod_xsendfile on my server because I can't reconfigure Apache to add new modules. I think this approach is overkill anyway. I can try configuring Nginx's X-Accel-Redirect, however that requires implementing all the Django code for auth myself, and I'd prefer an existing solution. However, this is my backup plan. Is there a code package that implements authentication with basic admin for a static site?

• Excluding certain file types in wget

  I have been using wget for a while now to mirror files from an ftp server to a local folder. My wget command is as follows: wget -mirror -w 1 -p -nH -P /var/www/ ftp://my-ftp-server However, I just noticed that it is copying over a .listing file for every folder that it visits. So, even if nothing has been changed on the ftp server, a .listing file will always be copied. My understanding is that the .listing file is created when wget opens the ftp session. Is there a way to avoid this? I've tried the -R option (e.g. -R .listing) but this didn't help.   Hello, i am currently learning Java and PHP as I have some projects from university, which require me to apply both languages. Specifically, a Java GUI application, connecting to a MySQL database and a web application that will be implemented in PHP/MySQL. I have started learning the MVC pattern, Struts, Spring and I am also learning PHP with zend. My first question is: How can I find employment as a programmer/software engineer? The reason I ask is because I have sent my CV into many companys, but all of them stated that I required work experience. I really need some guidance on how to improve my career opportunites. At present, I work on my own and haven't worked in collaboration with anyone on a particular project. I'm assuming most people create projects and submit them along with their CVs. My second question is: Everyone has to make a start from somewhere, but what if this somewhere doesn't come? What do I need to do to create the circumstances where I can easily progress forward? • Plugged in, not charging&ndash;Windows 7

  Just a quick post on something I ran into lately with my Dell Precision M4500 laptop (monster laptop!).  I noticed the little icon in the system tray for the power options was stating that it was “plugged in, not charging”.  I don’t know why it was stating this, but I quickly found a fix for it on the net. I found the fix in this forum on CNET.  Here’s the fix: In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below. 1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager . 2. Expand the Batteries category. 3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall . WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver. 4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes . Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes . Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.   And it did work.

  I write web-based software and simple website ("Home", "Who we are", "Contact"). For a simple website I'm using a covered GPL v3 framework. The user surf the website, send an email, take info, etc. I repeat: simple website, not a Joomla or Wordpress. 1) Will the website be covered with the GPL? I don't modify the framework. I'm using his classes in other classes... (OOP). 2) For the point 1, if yes, do I need to add (e.g. in the footer) name of framework and his link? 3) I must permit download of entire website to study code (nothing that a programmer has interest in)? E.g. placing it in Github? 4) If 2 is NO, how you can "understand" that we use that framework? In effect no php lines are exposed to the browser... You cannot understand that when you push "Send email" the site is calling $this->send($email). If you write me an email "Are you using XXX framework"? I can answer NO.

• SEO questions about PR, Page Structure, and Other

  A couple of basic questions related to SEO. 1) If I have a site that has several different niches that I am trying to promote from. Example Web Developer broke down into section of Web Design, Graphic Design, Programming, Software for SEO purposes, would it be better to use subdomains for these main sections or use the main domain with a folder like structure? 2) Is PR different for each page of a domain or ever page has a PR of the same on that domain? Also do sub-domains have a different PR? 3) When entering a hugely over saturated niche such as web-design, is it even possible to compete with the big sites that have been ranked on google #1 page for years? 4) Lastly, I have read about how important titles, link anchors, and headings are for SEO and how content is the most important. So left's say we are building a standard header, body, sidebar, footer page. In the the actual markup, would it be better to make sure the main content comes before the sidebar on the page or does this probably not make a difference? 5) I seen mentioned in another answer here that microformats can help with SEO, is there any fact behind this?   I have several remote devices that use GSM modem and gather data. I need to communicate with those devices from a PC station located in a office using the dial up connection. Is there a way to do this WITHOUT an additional GSM modem connected to that PC? Is there some way to accomplish PC to remote GSM device communication using e.g. VoIP or similar technology? I want to avoid installing an additional GSM modem in the office and use some software solution instead.

• Powershell Foreach-Object with if statement not working - help!

  I have a batch file that takes a computer name as its argument and will install Java JRE on it remotely. Now, Im trying to run this Powershell script to repeatedly call the batch file and install Java on any system that it finds without the latest version. It seems to run error-free, but the statements inside the if code block never seem to run - even when the if conditional test evaluates to true. Can anyone look at this script and point out what I'm possibly missing? I'm using the Quest AD cmdlets, and BSOnPosh module. • What SATA drive should I install FreeBSD onto? i.e. ar0 vs da0 vs ad4/5

  I'm installing FreeBSD 8.0 on a server that has hardware SATA Raid. I'm just wondering. What is the difference between these devices. i.e. ar0, da0, ad4, ad5 I take it that ad4 & 5 are my two disks. Somehow the OS can see them individually even though it's one logical mirrored drive. Should I be installing it onto ar0 or one of the adX disks. What is da0? it's smaller than the others. ar0 is not some kind of software raid device is it? Just want to make sure I don't mess this up right from the get go.

• Hard Drive upgrade advice for a Dell PowerEdge 1950

  My setup is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with 2x 140Gb Hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. The OS is Windows 2003 Web Edition and disk is partitioned into to two, a 12Gb C: partition and the remainder is the D: drive. Both are very close to full capacity. Ideally I want to replace those drives with 2x 1Tb drives while retaining all data. First of all is this possible without rebuilding the server? If so, will I need any 3rd party software, Symantec Ghost, Partition Master for e.g., to do this? Any general advice as to how to go about doing this?

• You've been working on a platform for as long as you remember. Not anymore. How does it feel?

  How does it feel to work on a platform for as long as you remember, you've been encouraged to innovate, to improve and give all in day and night for that platform, be it either an operating system, a hardware architecture or a software framework/library and then be forced to switch bases because that platform has been abandoned over the night? It has happened before, many times, for eg. to SGI/IRIX and more recently to SUN/Open Solaris and now Nokia/Symbian. Have you been part of such a shift? If so then please share the story and describe your feelings at that time and if it is the case, how did you manage the situation? Reorientation? Giving up on the field and turned to other things you've been constantly putting aside like family? Many did so(for eg. people at Netscape). You may not think of it being such a big deal, but it is, after you've been working 10 to 20+ years on a platform/technology and then be faced to switch your expertise and mindset, the feeling tends to become really strong and some people really give up this crazy field and start enojoying a normal life. Would love to hear your stories.

• Can certain system-hungry modules be disabled in Ubuntu?

  Hi, Let me add some context: I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit (Desktop) on a relatively powerful stationary PC (Intel Core i7 920, 12GB ram). My purpose is highspeed imaging with a pointgrey Grashopper machine-vision camera (for research, PhD project). This camera is capable of 200 fps at full VGA (640x480) resolution. The camera is connected using Firewire (1394b) and the drivers and software from Pointgrey works great. I have developed a console C++ application that can grap a certain number of frames to preallocated memory and after this also save the grapped frames to harddrive. Currently it works fine but sometimes I am observing a few framedrops (1-3). When this happens I reset the experiment and repeat the recording and usually i am lucky the second time with no framedrops (the camera-driver has a internal framecounter that I am using). Question: I usually go to tty1 and use "sudo service gdm stop" to disable the graphical frontend. It seems to release some memory though that is not my main concern. My concern is CPU resources. Are there other system hungry modules that can be disabled temporarily such that the CPU gets less busy on Ubuntu 9.10? At some point in the future I will update to 10.10. Should I perhaps option for the server edition instead? Thanks.

  I have a problem where any program is started under Windows Vista, the following error message is generated Bad Image C;\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~3\GOEC62~1.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. This happens for every program started, including those that start automatically at boot time. My Google-fu is failing to solve this for me. I have already tried an "sfc /scannow" which did find some problems, but it said that it could not correct them. What might cause this problem? How might it be resolved?

• How can I ensure my Samsung Series 7 is actually using the Radeon switchable graphics?

  I have a Samsung Series 7 with the Radeon 6750M switchable graphics. The ATI software lets you force programs to use the dedicated card. However, I'm not convinced it is actually ever using it, as the frame rates on some non-taxing games (Portal, TF2) are merely OK. To make matters worse, it looks like the ATI Catalyst Control has vanished from my laptop. To make it even worse, you can't download the driver and ATI CCC from ATI's site, you need to download it from Samsung, and the ZIP they provide is corrupted. How can I ensure my Samsung Series 7 is actually using the Radeon switchable graphics?

• unable remove/reinstall libxss1:amd

  Whenever I try to install anything (software-center or apt-get) I get an error report stating that libxss1:amd is in a "very bad inconsistent state" (translated from german) and that I should reinstall it. That would not bother me much but I am never sure if the stuff I'm trying will be working in the end. It really resists from being repaired apt-get install, apt-get remove, apt-get -f install, and all the usual suspects - nothing works. It always comes to: dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von libxss1:amd64 (--configure): Paket ist in einem sehr schlechten inkonsistenten Zustand - Sie sollten es nochmal installieren, bevor Sie die Konfiguration versuchen. Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von: libxss1:amd64 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I posted the error as is, since my translation might not be exact. But I guess you can figure from my text. I found out that this file is the X screen saver. Maybe I should kill it before handling that file. If thats so, than please tell me how. • Logging off does not kill process in Windows Server 2003

  I have a Windows Server 2003(Enterprise, SP2). My understanding was that any process created by a user will be terminated when the user loggs off the account. But its not happening. I login via Administrator account. Start a simple java process and logoff. But the process is not killed. Is there any configuration for this or something? I am mostly a software programmer and not much in to servers and so I am stuck. I found out that while logging off, 1) Win32 is supposed to send a CTRL_LOGOFF_EVENT to all processes started by that user. 2) JVM is supposed to handle this event and terminate the VM. But I can't understand why my java process is not killed when i logoff. Any idea!!!

• Streaming audio to headless linux box

  I have a dual boot (Win 7 + Ubuntu) PC connected via wifi with my music collection on a local HDD. I usually use Rhythmbox on Ubuntu or Winamp on Windows to listen to my music but I'll change if I have to. I also have a Raspberry Pi (low power PC running Debian) in the living room that is usually headless and connected via ethernet. The Raspberry Pi is also connected to my living room speakers via an amp. I would like to be able to stream music from my PC over the network to the linux raspberry pi. What software can I use to do this? Some sort of audio client\server?
