• Inactive JSRs looking for Spec Leads

  You may have noticed that some JSRs have a classification of "Inactive" on their JSR page.  The introduction of this term in 2009 was part of an effort to enable and encourage more transparency into the development of JSRs.  You can read more about Inactive JSRs here and also in the JCP FAQ.The following JSR proposals have been Inactive since at least 2009.   How does one properly approach having Ubuntu servers on a Xen hypervisor? I don't have any experience with RAID or Xen other than from a theoretical level. Additional requirements: Use with mdadm Software RAID 5 (can be on separate disks) that multiple instances with access Paravirtualized Ubuntu Server guests instances Possible ideas for now: Ubuntu host (dom0) with ubuntu-xen-server package (this purportedly isn't supported) dom0 host will "own" RAID 5 partition More Ubuntu servers as guests Citrix XenServer bare-metal host XenServer will own RAID Citrix XenServer bare-metal host Ubuntu guest instance creates and owns RAID Questions and concerns: Can Ubuntu be used as a dom0 Xen host? • Is there really anything to gain with complex design? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: What is enterprise software, exactly? 8 answers I've been working for a consulting firm for some time, with clients of various sizes, and I've seen web applications ranging in complexity from really simple: MVC Service Layer EF DB To really complex: MVC UoW DI / IoC Repository Service UI Tests Unit Tests Integration Tests But on both ends of the spectrum, the quality requirements are about the same. In simple projects, new devs / consultants can hop on, make changes, and contribute immediately, without having to wade through 6 layers of abstraction to understand what's going on, or risking misunderstanding some complex abstraction and costing down the line. In all cases, there was never a need to actually make code swappable or reusable - and the tests were never actually maintained past the first iteration because requirements changed, it was too time-consuming, deadlines, business pressure, etc etc. So if - in the end - testing and interfaces aren't used rapid development (read: cost-savings) is a priority the project's requirements will be changing a lot while in development ...would it be wrong to recommend a super-simple architecture, even to solve a complex problem, for an enterprise client? Is it complexity that defines enterprise solutions, or is it the reliability, # concurrent users, ease-of-maintenance, or all of the above? I know this is a very vague question, and any answer wouldn't apply to all cases, but I'm interested in hearing from devs / consultants that have been in the business for a while and that have worked with these varying degrees of complexity, to hear if the cool-but-expensive abstractions are worth the overall cost, at least while the project is in development.

• mod_rewrite issue | Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects

  ok what Im doing normally works but since my rule "includes" itself is giving me issues and can't find a solution after hours working on different options. I have a .htaccess with: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/3.15.0/(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /3.15.0/$1 [L] this is for my software versions, I have a program that can request sometimes versions that are updated and in the server may be behind a couple version so I want to be able to say that whatever is comming in forward to the latest version that in this example is 3.15.0 /var/www/nameblabla/3.15.0 my .htaccess is on /var/www/nameblabla/.htaccess so the first Condition is to ignore request that already has the right path and version.. the second should be to grab all request and forward to 3.15.0... and of course not loose the path to the files I want from inside that should be the same. so far I can only get it to redirect to such directory but will loose the path and others I get the "Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects" I guess this is because Im including the 3.15.0 path Any help or another way to do this with out mod_rewrite?

• Can't reinstall Office 2010

  I had Office 2010 Professional Plus installed on my Windows 7 (32 bit machine), then I decided to remove it and install the 2013 version. I went to Programs and Features and removed the software as always, everything went successfully and it asked me to reboot the machine in order to complete the un-installation process, and when I clicked reboot a message suddenly appears telling me that an error occurred during un-installation and the system restarts instantly before I get a chance to see the error message. After that I tried to re-install Office 2010 but after the installer seems to have finished, it tells me that the installation failed without an explanations ? I have taken a look at the event viewer and there is some error saying the office protection platform service failed to start, could this have anything to do with the problem? What could be the cause, how can I fix this ?

• Is there a way to disable specific Spybot Immunization rules?

  I've been having problems using a desktop sharing application, which I've traced to the Immunization protections applied via Spybot S&D. Specifically, the problem has been narrowed down to the rules in the \SOFTWARE (Plugins) categories under the Internet Explorer groups. Once I disable these Immunization categories, everything in the application works fine. Each of these categories appears to include ~900 protections on the system. I suspect that the root cause of my problems could be narrowed down to just one, or perhaps a handful, of the settings that get applied in these categories. However, I can't find any options in Spybot S&D which would allow me to drill down to the individual protection rules and choose which to enable or disable. Is there something I'm missing, or is this not a feature available via the GUI? If it's not strictly supported in the application, is there a way to work around it by manually editing some of its files or registry settings? • remastering knoppix: which version and what method should i use

  I'd like to remaster knoppix (mainly add and configure some software). I downloaded newest version (KNOPPIX-ADRIANE_V6.2CD-2009-11-18-EN.iso) but later i read that it has some other window manager as default, not kde... and i want to have kde on my remaster. Is kde included on that iso but it's not default or it's not included at all? If it's not there what knoppix version should i get for my remaster? My other question... I've seen some remastering scripts (with menus, etc) on knoppix forums, do any of these works with version i have? Or with version i should have if i need kde?

• Is it possible to have an external server within a company's firewall?

  Hi guys, I am sure this is server admin 101, but I am unsure of the answer and would love some help. I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server. Is there a way I can recommend that we put our server at SliceHost within their Firewall? Is that an easy thing to do? Their specific requirements are: For my application to authenticate against their Active Directory, and Only allow access to the application from within their network If that is not possible, what should I recommend to my client?

• Help, I need to debug my BrowserHelperObject (BHO) (in C++) after a internet explorer 8 crash in Rel

  Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.

• What kind of hosting do I need?

  I migrated this question from serverfault. Hopefully this is the appropriate place. I have been trying to answer this question but I haven't found an specific answer to my situation. As I want to pay for what I need, I thought I could get a good answer here. I have a custom made forum (rather than a built-in forum like the ones you can find in plugins, e.g. WP-Forum or phpBB type of software) in Django. I don't want to use Apache and modwsgi because it's usually very memory-hungry and I can't afford a big server. I prefer a combination of nginx and gunicorn which I think is very efficient (maybe you can also tell me what you think about that). I'm expecting to receive 10,000 to 20,000 visits each month with 15,000 to 30,000 page impressions. I have reviewed some cloud services like Amazon EC2 or Rackspace and other more traditional services (Linodo). This site won't use videos or big images and I certainly don't need a huge amount of bandwidth (200GB would be definitely too much). I need shell access so shared hosting is out of the question. What do I need to run a website like that without problems? What about RAM? 256MB would be enough (that's the amount of RAM offered by small instances in Amazon and Rackspace)? Do you know of any alternative to those I mentioned? If you need more information to provide a useful answer, please don't hesitate to ask. By the way, I was told that Linodo is not all that different to Amazon EC2 but this website is supposed to work 24/7, so I can't take advantage of Linodo's flexibility regarding creating and deleting instances. • Caching static content from Adobe, Microsoft, etc

  I'm currently running the Apple SUS on a Mac OS X Server in a small office environment. It works well for Apple updates, but I'm still stuck with either manually downloading and installing Adobe/Microsoft updates on each computer or running them through a Squid cache, with the blind faith that Squid will keep the files I actually want to stay cached. What is the best way to cache updates locally for applications like the Adobe Updater or Microsoft AutoUpdate? Ideally cached in such a way that I can tell which files I do or do not have cached. It would also be nice to be able to cache things for other software like Firefox and Sparkle-enabled apps, but these are usually small enough to ignore.

So how long will it be before it's the number 1 NAS system in the market? What are the biggest hurdles still stopping the widespread adoption of the ZFSSA? From what I see, it's three things: 1. Administrator's comfort level with older legacy systems. 2. Politics 3. Past issues with Oracle Support.   I see all of these issues crop up regularly. Number 1 just takes time and education. • How to handle fine grained field-based ACL permissions in a RESTful service?

  I've been trying to design a RESTful API and have had most of my questions answered, but there is one aspect of permissions that I'm struggling with. Different roles may have different permissions and different representations of a resource. For example, an Admin or the user himself may see more fields in his own User representation vs another less-privileged user. This is achieved simply by changing the representation on the backend, ie: deciding whether or not to include those fields. Additionally, some actions may be taken on a resource by some users and not by others. This is achieved by deciding whether or not to include those action items as links, eg: edit and delete links. A user who does not have edit permissions will not have an edit link. That covers nearly all of my permission use cases, but there is one that I've not quite figured out. There are some scenarios whereby for a given representation of an object, all fields are visible for two or more roles, but only a subset of those roles my edit certain fields. An example: { "person": { "id": 1, "name": "Bob", "age": 25, "occupation": "software developer", "phone": "555-555-5555", "description": "Could use some sunlight.." } } Given 3 users: an Admin, a regular User, and Bob himself (also a regular User), I need to be able to convey to the front end that: Admins may edit all fields, Bob himself may edit all fields, but a regular User, while they can view all fields, can only edit the description field. I certainly don't want the client to have to make the determination (or even, for that matter, to have any notion of the roles involved) but I do need a way for the backend to convey to the client which fields are editable. I can't simply use a combination of representation (the fields returned for viewing) and links (whether or not an edit link is availble) in this scenario since it's more finely grained. Has anyone solved this elegantly without adding the logic directly to the client?

• Low Graphics and laggy screen after update to 13.10 from 13.04

  After updating from 13.04 to 13.10 many of 3D unity stuff has stopped working, I am suing Samsung Series 3 (NP350V5X) Laptop which has Switchable Intel and AMD Radeon HD 7670M GFX. xserver-xorg-video-ati does works but NO 3D support and graphics are very low. [I am currently using this] fglrx & fglrx-updates shows blank screen after Login. • What is this video format, and how do I convert It

  Description I have a big (7.4G) .mkv file (1080p) which I want to convert to H.264 (using x264) Problem MediaCoder and GSpot are unable to detect the codec. They don't display anything. Just that the file is a matroska Container Video with a MIMEtype of video/x-matroska. No bitrate, profile etc. But the source tells me that is VC-1 encoded. Question So how do I encode this file. as in, using what encoding software, since MediaCoder has failed.

• Default Keyboard for new users in Windows 7

  I just installed Windows 7 and I want all users signing in to the computer to see the Language Bar customized with the following three languages: "English (American)" "French (Standard)" "Chinese (Simplified PRC)" I am running the following four lines of code at log on in order to change the registry such that each user will see the language bar, and then have access to the three keyboard layouts mentioned above. reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\CTF\LangBar" /v ShowStatus /t REG_DWORD /d 4 /f reg add "HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload" /v 2 /d 0000040c reg add "HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload" /v 3 /d 00000c0a reg add "HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload" /v 4 /d 00000804 The above works fine, but with one small/major inconvenience: the user has to log off and then log back on in order for these changes to take effect and see the language bar, as described above. The question becomes: How can I force these changes to take effect so that users don't have to log off and then log back in to see the language bar. This has to be done automatically when users log in.

• V4L2 and ALSA: Kernel SPI or User API?

  I'm trying to understand what Video for linux and ALSA are (exactly), and I can't discern whether they're APIs for Linux application to use (the userspace) or if they are backend services that are only available to the Linux kernel (sort of a kernalspace SPI). Or, if they are something entirely different. On one hand, those articles make it sound like its an API for applications to use. However, on the V4L2 page it has a section title Software supporting Video4Linux... So is V4L2 a library that applications use, or is it a module that "snaps into" the kernel? I'm so coonfused, thanks in advance.

• Multicasting Windows 7 Image

  I am trying to deploy some new machines with windows 7 for the first time in our computer labs. We used to use third party imaging software and then run sysprep after the image was copied(XP), but it seems you can't go that route with windows 7. We set up a new imaging server with the windows system image manager, but when we try to multicast the image it pretty much takes down our whole staff and faculty network. I heard you can turn on a multicast feature on our cisco switches to help with the issue, but that it also slows the switches to a crawl. Another idea we have tried was pulling the the computer lab switch off the main network and plugging the imaging server directly into the computer lab switch so the multicast doesn't take down our network, but it doesn't seem to work without being able to hit a domain controller. Is there a way to multicast without taking out the network? I feel like I am missing something... Thanks in advance

• Enabling the Power State Change Beep

  I have a Thinkpad T430s. I found on other Thinkpads there's a beep when you plug or unplug the AC cord. While I hear a lot of people say it's annoying it seems like a very useful security feature. However, when I go into the Power Manager the option to beep on plugging/unplugging ("Power State Change Beep") isn't there, even though it's in the help file already. I know it would be easy to rig a software solution to this event, but it would kind of defeat the purpose if it doesn't beep when it's in sleep. Is there a way to get this beep on my laptop?

• OSX - Update "Java for OS X 2012-002" is not mentioned on support.apple.com, is this ok?

  Straight after installing "Java for OS X 2012-001" Software Update asks me to install "Java for OS X 2012-002", which has the exact same size (66.6 MB) and description (including the same two links: HT5055 and HT1222) as the former, which strikes me as odd. The "Java for OS X 2012-001" is described on the apple support pages, but the "Java for OS X 2012-002" is not mentioned anywhere. Also searching on google does not yield any usable results. What is your opinon? Am i paranoid? Did you also see this update?

• How do I catalog files on several external hard drives that I want to store off-line? OSX

  My partner, an artist, has more than 10 external hardisks both USB and firewire and every 2-3 months a new one has to be added (She's working with videos and pictures) currently its 10TB and growing so too much for a affordable NAS. Right now the files are not indexed and I think can not be searched with spotlight because not all drives can be connected at the same time. So if she wants to search for a file, she has to guess which disk/disks (based mostly on the date) and then search several drives. Now I'm looking for a solution to index/catalog the drives, something like GentibusCD Cathy Disclib (all these solutions are unfortunately Windows only) Is there any software for OSX that will catalog all the hard drives, so she can search the catalog, find the files, and get the ID of the disk / disk name that has the content? Preferably something with a GUI so my partner can also use it easily Preferably with Thumbnails for pictures/videos (But even an equivalent to "tree /F /A" would be better than nothing)

• How can I anonymize my browser useragent, yet still be counted as a FF/Ubuntu user?

  I read about EFF's Panopticlick project to see how unique your webbrowser's headers are. I would like to anonymize that a bit. My current User Agent is Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100106 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.7 I would like to make that more anonymous, however I still wanted to be counted as a Firefox and Ubuntu user. How can I change my User Agent in Firefox? What should I change it to so that it's less unique, but will be counted as a Firefox user and a Ubuntu user on web analytics software? I know that there is no guarantee that I will be counted a Firefox/Ubuntu user, just something that 'works most of the time' would be sufficent.
