• Is ZeroMQ a good choice to make a Python app and a C# managed assembly work together?

  I have a task that involves talking to a .NET-based API (namely AutoCAD) to retrieve data, send commands, and react to events. I want to separate the API operations and the proper program logic (largely already implemented in Python) by using natural tools for both: a C# DLL for the former and a Python app for the latter. To connect these two pieces, I began exchanging JSON in ZeroMQ messages. I'm at early development stages but having recently discovered that ZeroMQ does not guarantee message delivery/order, I have reservations about whether this is a feasible way to go. Right now my app is a very basic REQ/REP pair and I plan to handle reacting to events and executing different commands by adding some sort of 'recipient-function' field to my message format. The reason that I want to use ZMQ is that I might be able to scale the software into a larger, multi-user, distributed solution sometime. I am a lay programmer so I would ask for your advice about this architecture. Should I just go ahead with it and plan to deal with message reliability/ordering when problems appear? Should I consider developing some kind of a REST wrapper around ZMQ?

• About C# objects and the possibilties it has

  As a novice programmer and I always wonder about c# capabilities. I know it is still early to judge that but all i want to know is can c# do complex stuffs or something outside windows OS. I think C# is a proprietary language (I don't know if I said that right) meaning you can't do it outside Visual Studio or Windows. Also you can't create your own controller (called object right?) like you are forced to use these available in toolbox and their properties and methods. Can C# be used with OpenGL API or DirectX API Finally it always bothers me when I think I start doing things in Visual Studio, I know it sounds arrogant to say but sometimes I feel that I don't like to be forced to use something even if its helpful, like I feel (do I have the right to feel?) that I want to do all things by myself? Don't laugh I just feel that this will give me a better understanding. Is Visual C# like using MaxScript inside 3ds max in that C# is exclusive to do Windows and Forms and Components that are Windows related and maxscript is only for 3d editing and manipulation for various things in the software. If it is too difficult for a beginner I hope you don't answer the fourth question as I don't have enough motivation and I want to keep the little I have. Note: Sorry for my English, I am self taught and never used the language with native speakers so expect so errors. I have a lot of questions regarding many things, what is the daily ratio you think for asking (number of questions) that would not bother the admins of the site and the members here.   I'm trying to get an object from object space, into projected space using these intermediate matrices: The first matrix (I) is the one that transforms from object space into inertial space, but since my object is not rotated or translated in any way inside the object space, this matrix is the 4x4 identity matrix. The second matrix (W) is the one that transforms from inertial space into world space, which is just a scale transform matrix of factor a = 14.1 on all coordinates, since the inertial space origin coincides with the world space origin. /a 0 0 0\ W = |0 a 0 0| |0 0 a 0| \0 0 0 1/ The third matrix (C) is the one that transforms from world space, into camera space. This matrix is a translation matrix with a translation of (0, 0, 10), because I want the camera to be located behind the object, so the object must be positioned 10 units into the z axis. /1 0 0 0\ C = |0 1 0 0| |0 0 1 10| \0 0 0 1/ And finally, the fourth matrix is the projection matrix (P). Apparenly, I'm doing something wrong or missing something completely here, because it's not rendering properly. • How do I prevent internet access to a group of computers on my network?

  Well I have the following setup... Computer A , B and C are networked.... Computer A is connected to the internet, computer B and C are not setup for internet access currently but I guess its possible with some kind of setting they would eventually be able to access the internet and this is what I would like to prevent. In summary only A should have internet access while A and B and C should still be on intranet. Is this kind of config possible?, what kind of software or setup or tools would I need to achive this?

• I would like to have a publicly accessable linux box hosted elsewhere. Who provides this service?

  I would like to have a general purpose linux server available and publicly accessible. I understand that there are no lack of web-hosting companies, but I might want more control over the machine than is typical. I would want the ability to install software, such as an SVN server, and I would like to be able to expose various port numbers, as I may have a variety of extremely low traffic sites that I would want to have available. Obviously, one option is to host such a machine in my home. Is that my only option? Or is what I describe out there, possible as a virtual machine on a larger server?

• Windows Proxy Server advice

  I have a webserver that currently has about 10 IP addresses. I have various clients that require a proxy server to route their internal traffic through. The load is not that great, so I'd like to have this ONE server act as a proxy server for 10 different clients, each client having their own unique IP on the server. The hardware is already setup, but I'm wondering what software solutions you guys recommend? I've looked at WinGate, Squid-Proxy, etc...but am pretty green with this. Maybe there's even a way to have Windows do this natively? I'm running Windows Server 2008, 32 bit.

• why is 64 bits version called AMD64 and 32 bits version called i386?

  I have never understood this. This is what i know: 64 bits OS if you want to handle more than 2GB RAM. Else, 32 bits OS. So on Ubuntu's homepage you can download either 64 bits or 32 bits. But the 64 bits is called amd64 and the 32 bits is called i386. So i have to have a AMD processor to run amd64? And intel to run i386? And if someone codes a software (lets say Apache). Does he have to code one 32 bits and one 64 bits? Do some softwares only exist for 32 and not 64 and vice versa? Thanks in advance!

• Running multipul lines through a server.

  I am looking to buy numbers in bulk on DIDx.net. After I purchase the numbers in a particular area code, I want to forward those numbers to other numbers that are outside of that area code. This way it will be seen as a local call versus long distance. I have the customers but I don't have the system I need. I have read about Asterisk, VOIP, SIP, and BYOH. But I have no clue what will be the best system for me. Does anyone have any idea what my next step should be when it comes to hardware and software? Or what type of operating system I should use? I basically want to set up a system like GoogleVoice & Phonebooth.

• Find keyword values from PDF [closed]

  I have a lot of PDF reports I'd need to index. They're mostly "text-based PDFs", not images. I know they all have account number in certain format, 123456AAAAA and some other keyword info like addresses, customer names etc. needed in indexing these files. Basically if the file is ab.pdf, I need to create ab.txt that contains: ACC=123456AAAA Customer=John Doe Date=20120808 What would be the best software/solution to generate indexing information for these? I know there's pdftotext, but piping it to different grep/awk commands is a hack... It would be nice to specify an area in PDF to search for the account number, and specify the format it is in.

• Leave Windows Session Logged On

  Is a bad idea for any reason to leave accounts logged onto Windows remote desktop sessions? So instead of logging off, just closing the session so it locks. In this case, the limited number of remote desktop connections is not an issue. I am just wondering if anyone has seen sessions leak memory over time or maybe security issues with doing this, etc... I could see if programs were left open they might suck up and or leak memory, but has anyone seen this with Microsoft software such as Control Panels, Management Consoles, and Exchange System Administrator?

• Looking for a router with multiple WAN ports and load balancing

  I'm going to be moving in a few months. The location I'm moving to is great except it's on a road with very few people, so the internet access option is limited to DSL at 1.6Mbps down, 384kbps up. This is much slower than I'm used to. One option is to get at least two of the DSL lines. There's also good possibility that I'll be able to get WiMax or similar. I've been looking around a bit and it seems like what I need is a load balancing router with multiple WAN ports. Can anyone recommend some good ones? I could also go with a small power efficient Linux box with multiple NICs. What would be good software for that? It'd need to be able to handle around 10Mbps. Thanks for any help

• JFFS2 poor mount performance

  I run multiple ARM boards with Debian Linux installed. Board is equipped with 512 MB of NAND memory. I've observed that after ~3 months of continuous run booting time increased significantly - it takes over 3 minutes to mount filesystem (JFFS2). System was using about 35% of available storage so I’ve removed unnecessary files (got to ~18%) but this didn't change anything. Then I realized that my software produces directories that are left empty so I’ve removed ~500 empty and unnecessary dirs. This didn’t help either. After system is started I see JFFS2 garbage collector (jffs2_gcd_mtd4) running and occupying over 90% of CPU. Now my question: is there a way to „optimize” JFFS2 filesystem for better performance - faster booting (my system have limited timid to boot up)? It would be great if this optimization could be done remotely - I have no physical access to boards.

• Windows XP: Slow start menu 'All Programs' response

  When I click start, and then 'All Programs' (or select a sub menu of all programs) I get a grey menu which does not respond for about 5 seconds - after this it is ok. Any idea what is causing the menu to behave sluggishly? What can be done to fix this? • What are the most necessary non-language specific things a programmer needs to know?

  I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Right now I work at a little web company, am almost done with school, and have written an iPhone app, but I'm not sure what else I need to focus my learning energies on. I've decided I want to do software programming, so I've been actively reading everything I can get my hands on that deals with Objective-C / C++ (Cocoa, OpenGL, etc). But those are not the things I'm talking about. I know I need to "master" a language or two. What I'm talking about are the other "things". Things such as learning and using source control, design patterns, etc. What thing (or things, just one per response), would you say I should concurrently be focusing on? You can consider in your answer that I'm wanting to do the aforementioned career path, but you don't have to. I just want a nice list of things to research, and actually use in my career. Also, can someone help me with tagging this? I'm not sure what exactly would be a good tag for such a question.

• Let task explorer always run with realtime priority

  I have replaced task manager by process explorer from sysinternals. I would like this to always run at realtime, so that I can easily get it open when my system is really slow. I have noticed that it can take a while to start this program at those moments. I have gone over the different options mentioned on SU. I can't change the shortcut, it immediately opens the .exe. I also can't use the task manager plugins/extensions, as I'm not using task manager. Any idea what I could do? Preferably without installing any other software. That is, if the priority would have any effect on starting the program.

• Connecting via ShrewSoft VPN client means no LAN internet access (Windows 7 64 bit) - any advice please?

  I have a Windows 7 64 bit desktop machine which is connected to a LAN. I recently installed ShrewSoft VPN client v 2.1.7 on my machine so that I can connect to a license server hosted by my customer. They are running a Cisco VPN server and I originally tried (unsuccessfully!) to use the Cisco VPN client for Windows 64 bit but the default gateway wasn't being configured correctly after loading in my pcf file. Using ShrewSoft I am able to import the same pcf file, and successfully connect to the machine I need to using the VPN client software. The client machine I need to connect to has IP address 1.52.90.33. The problem is that when I am connected to the customer network using the VPN client application (and after a few minutes) I lose my LAN internet connection. I can only presume that this is because, by default the ShrewSoft VPN client application automatically tunnels all traffic through the VPN connection. I know there is an option to switch off the "Tunnel All" option on the Policy tab of the application and enter a Remote Network Resource (to "Include" or "Exclude") as "Address" and "Netmask" IP addresses however I am not sure what I need to enter here. • PDAnet on Android IP on PC is not public IP. Where does the NAT take place, PDAnet or Verizon?

  When using PDAnet on a PC (Win7 ultimate) to USB tether a Motorola Droid on Verizon 3G the IP address of the PC appears to be public - 64.245.171.115 (64-245-171-115.pools.spcsdns.net) - but connections show as coming from another public IP - 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com). Someone is performing Network Address Translation - either PDAnet or within the Verizon 3G network. Can someone tell me who is doing the NAT? Is it PDAnet or is it at Verizon? Is there any possibility of setting up port forwarding, such that connections to the public IP 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com) are forward to the PC? We are testing a network protocol that requires either a true public IP or forwarding a range of ports from the public Internet to the system on which the software runs (actually Linux hosted by VMware Player or Workstation on a PC running Windows).

• Xnest from Mac OSX to HP UX

  Hi, I'm trying to connect to my HP/UX machine from Mac OS X using Xnest. The problem is that I can not get the keyboard to work. I can see the login-prompt, but unable to type in my username. The connection is done by: Xnest :1 -query 192.168.0.193 -geometry 1280x1024 and it gives me some errors: (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/X11/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so failed (dlopen(/usr/X11/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so, 5): image not found) (EE) GLX: could not load software renderer (EE) XKB: Couldn't open rules file /usr/X11/share/X11/xkb/rules/base (EE) XKB: No components provided for device Virtual core keyboard Couldn't get keyboard. • Using unsigned drivers in Windows 8

  I just migrated from Windows 7 x64 to 8, but I can't get my VPN software to run anymore : the SafeNet IKE service (installed by SafeNet SoftRemoteLT GA, used by my VPN provider) cannot start anymore. I found that by default unsigned drivers are disabled on Win8, and that is what is blocking the driver. The System event log tells me that the driver (apparently, C:\WINDOWS\SysWow64\Drivers\IPSECDRV.sys ) was blocked when I try to manually start the service (SafeNet IKE Service). I get the same messages for another driver, crypto.sys found in the same folder. I tried using bcdedit to enable unsigned drivers : bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit /set testsigning ON After reboot, same error. I tried by booting into Win 8's test mode, same issue. Applying the code signing policy (Enabled, Ignore) does not help either. Running gpresult does show that the policy is applied. Any help welcome.

  Another issue I need help with. I use VMware for work on Ubuntu 12.04. However for some reasons my VMware Workstation software generates the following error: Unable to change virtual machine power state: Failed to power on '/home/pst007x/vmware/Windows 7 x64/Windows 7 x64.vmx'. Transport (VMDB) error -14: Pipe connection has been broken. Product: VMware® Workstation Version: 9.0.0 build-812388 Host OS Version: 3.5.0-18-generic Ubuntu 12.10 64bit Kernel Linux 3.5.0-18-generic I have seen patches, but nothing works, and the patches are not maintained, broken links. PLEASE NOTE: I know that this has been asked, but there was no answer given that resolves this issue. Unfortunately I have changed all my office and personal PC's to Ubuntu, and use Win7 in a vm, however since 12.10, vm now fails to launch. For me this is a catastrophe, and makes Ubuntu useless for me to use! I am in a desperate situation here, is there is anyone that can offer any help I would be truly appreciative. I have looked on the VMware forums and the only solution is offered for Fedora, but the people posting there are not clear about what the solution is! thanks PLEASE DO NOT CLOSE THIS QUESTION! I have tried everywhere to find a solution, but I have come up blank... Patches referenced to in other posts do not work in this version of VMware...

• Static pages for large photo album

  I'm looking for advice on software for managing a largish photo album for a website. 2000+ pictures, one-time drop (probably). I normally use MarginalHack's album, which does what I want: pre-generate thumbnails and HTML for the pictures, so I can serve without needing a dynamic run-time, so there's less attack surface to worry about. However, it doesn't handle pagination or the like, so it's unwieldy for this case. This is a one-time drop for pictures from a wedding, with a shared usercode/password for distribution to the guests; I don't wish to put the pictures in a third-party hosting environment. I don't wish to use PHP, simply because that's another run-time to worry about, I might relent and use something dynamic if it's Python or Perl based (as I can maintain things written in those). I currently have: Apache serving static files, Album-generated, some sub-directories to divide up the content to be a little more manageable. Something like Album but with pagination already handled would be great, but I'm willing to have something a little more dynamic, if it lets people comment or caption and store the extra data in something like an sqlite DB. I'd want something light-weight, not a full-blown CMS with security updates every three months. I don't want to upload pictures of other peoples' children into a third-party free service where I don't know what the revenue model is. (For my site: revenue is none, costs out of pocket). Existing server hosting is *nix, Apache, some WSGI. Client-side I have MacOS. Any advice?

• Unity on Ubuntu 11.10 - The Dash Home button brings up the panel, but is empty

  The dash home button brings up a panel that is greyed out, but it is totally empty. Unity seems to reset, but I get the following warning over and over: cs space validation failed unity What should I do next to try and fix this? Edit: Attempted fixes: I've refomatted, did not work. I've done apt-get remove unity then apt-get update then apt-get install unity, did not work. I've switched to Unity 2d and this seems to work. How can I get regualar Unity working or atleast find the error?

• Windows 7 blocks network access to network-installed apps

  Windows 2008 R2 domain. Users, running Windows 7 Enterprise, are trying to run some software from a network share. Specifically, I've tested this with MATLAB and PuTTY. When starting, MATLAB has to contact a licensing server to get its license. This action fails for regular users when they start MATLAB from the network share. However, if they copy the installation directory to a local disk everything works fine. Running MATLAB as an admin user from the network share also works. Same story with PuTTY. If the executable is launched from the share, regular users cannot connect to any servers. Something is blocking network communications for programs that are launched from a network drive. Does anyone have any clue as to what this is?

• How to have internet connection over VPN while "Microsoft Firewall Client for ISA server" is running

  I have the software mentioned in the title running on my machine. When I connect over VPN to my company's network, my internet connection gets borked, because somehow the ISA firewall blocks it. This is completely idiotic, because my work involves extensive use of the internet, so having to disconnect and reconnect continuously seriously cripples my productivity. (Meaning: I'm tearing my hair out here.) Can I have my VPN connection and somehow still have my internet connection too? I'm open to any solution.
