• Silverlight Vs. WPF Vs. Winforms What is good for specifically my purpose?

  I am about to start a new Windows applications and the contenders for the platform are: Windows Forms WPF Silverlight Now my experience with WPF at least in my last application was not very encouraging (the app failed to run on the deployment machines and I had to re-do it in Winforms). So my confidence is shaken here. My app is for mass-distribution (the last version had some 100,000+ installations). So I want to make absolutely sure that my users will be able to use it and enjoy it without any problems. I would love to create a nice interface, going the next step like a Flex or Silverlight, iPhone app, with animations and effects. So I would really like to go with WPF or Silverlight if I can. My needs are Good support for visuals and animation effects. Support for database connectivity. Support for printing (Is there an equivalent of PrintDocument in Silverlight) Must not suffer from deployment troubles. Silverlight is universal, but does it have printing support and good controls toolset? WPF has printing support and a nice toolset, but can I depend on it? Winforms is dated already and is not so impressive, but should I go with it anyway? Your advice would be appreciated

• Storing high precision latitude/longitude numbers in iOS Core Data

  I'm trying to store Latitude/Longitudes in core data. These end up being anywhere from 6-20 digit precision. And for whatever reason, i had them as floats in Core Data, its rounding them and not giving me the exact values back. I tried "decimal" type, with no luck either. Are NSStrings my only other option?   I'm using PMEase QuickBuild to perform automated builds of our Maven2 projects and a nightly sanity test to ensure nothing is broken. The test needs to untar packages which are created by the automated Maven2 projects. The problem is that the package names change frequently due to project versions being incremented all the time. Does anyone know how I can configure QuickBuild to pick up the version (ideally from the POM file of the individual components), if this is possible at all?

  I've set up a basic html/php submission form where people can register for our event, but need a way to replace the submission form webpage with one that reads something like "We have reached our registration limit" when we reach a certain number of submitted forms. Our database is MySQL (if that makes a difference) I've looked around on the web but people either say to count the entries by hand, or the ones that do have an automated system use CMS like drupal or joomla. Is it possible to setup an automated script that will do this?

Everything works fine on my Windows 7 machine, but on my Fedora 16 laptop, if I use Nautilus to try to access the share using smb://192.168.0.8/nathan in the location bar, it just has the loading cursor and does nothing. It never shows any errors, nothing. Using smbclient works just fine, but I'd like to get it working in Nautilus. I know that there can be problems with SELinux and Samba, so I created a file called booleans.local that contains samba_enable_home_dirs=1. • Windows 2008 Print Server issue

  I have a dedicated windows 2008 server I use as a file server and print server at my home office. Whenever I print documents from one of my clients, I see the document hit the queue on the server immediately (says its in "printing" status), but it takes FOREVER to print out (like over 5 minutes). But, printing the same document locally from the server takes 4 seconds. It's an HP 1006P laser printer. I am running 32-bit 2008 Server. Installed the Vista drivers ( updated to latest version ). Tried updating the drivers on the clients too and no dice. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?

• Printer monitor software across multiple workstations (AD integrated)

  I was asked to see if there is any kind of (free) software that allows multiple people in an office that use the same printer to see what jobs have finished recently, which are queued and which is printing. Main reason is that sometimes multiple people have the same task where they need to print some kind of form, and they are unsure whether or not their colleague has already printed the file. Because the printer is AD integrated, they only see a short message when printing, but they do not see a proper printer queue. A simple tray icon/tool would be perfect, no real graphical user interface is required. If this turns out to be too hard to find, I will attempt to write a simple application or script for the job, but since this is a low priority job I decided to ask here first before I start messing around with scripting which isn't my forte. • Best suited multi-function printer for Linux usage from a few choices

  I want a cheap multi-function printer for Linux usage. I'm looking for rock solid scanning and printing that works with big images. I'd prefer drivers that are available in Debian, or other drivers that are open source, but will settle for proprietary drivers if they are well contained and clean. Some choices I have are: Samsung SCX-4300 HP LaserJet M1120 MFP Samsung SCX-4500 Canon i-SENSYS MF4010 Brother DCP-7040 I am also interested in opinions what printer communication language is best for Linux usage for cheap printers. PostScript is nice, of course, but low-end PostScript printers often have problems when printing complex (large) PostScript files. It seems Samsung printers use SPL for communication, HP uses XQX and ZJS, then there's ofcourse PCL.

  Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller and Windows XP workstations: Active Directory Users and Computers/Users/User/Properties/Environment/Client devices Connect client drives at logon Connect client printers at logon Shouldn't the above Terminal Services settings in Active Directory override the end user Remote Desktop client settings? In our environment the end user Remote Desktop Client settings take precedence. If printing is disabled on the client but enabled in the user's AD profile then printing is not available. Is this working by design or can I change something to allow the user environment settings in AD to override the end user settings RDC settings?

  When booting Debian, you'll see it printing a lot of information about the system variables and such. I don't really need to see all that, so I'd like to modify some scripts to make sure that on boot, it just does what it has to do, without printing it on the screen. Just something I fancy. Offcourse, still seeing errors would be nice. But that long slur of text, I could do without. I've tried looking it up, but I can't find documentation on this specific thing anywhere.

  I am currently locking down a companies remote desktop access via a VPN. What I need to do is disable remote printing, file transfer and clipboard via active directory for the workstations that will be accessed. I am having trouble figuring out which GPO's are used to restrict this. My basic approach is to restrict VPN users to port 3389 so the will be able to access their work computers remotely but nothing else (I will look into layer 7 scanning later). With this I want to ensure they are unable to transfer and data via files, printing or the clipboard. The environment is Windows Server 2003

  I know that zeroconf does automatic service location on the local network. But what does it mean? For example there is a printer (printing is the service that it does). This printer choose randomly an IP for itself. It asks other devices if this IP is already occupied. If not, the printer occupies this IP. Then printer says to "everybody" that "printing" service is associated with this IP. Is it "automatic service location"? Or I got something wrong?

• Recommendations: Good Network MFP Printer/Scanner

  Hi, We have a small office that is expanding. At the moment we have 1x HP J6424 MFP, shared using it's built in network port. It is now becoming a headache, we have daily problems with people not being able to print or scan, and jobs just sitting in the queue. Or the scanner not being detected. Sometimes people can print but not scan, sometimes scan but not print, sometimes a bit of both. We are also pretty much constantly printing or scanning, or trying to! I would like to get a laser MFP (mono is fine) which works well for scanning a printing over the network with multiple users. Althernativly any recommendations for network scanners (sheet feed and or duplex a bonus). Clients are Windows 7 and Mac. Thanks very much!

• MS-DOS application sending screen output to LPT printer

  We have a MS-DOS application(coded in FoxPro), and recently had this glitch: the screen menu of the application without reason starts printing in an LPT Panasonic KX-1150 printer. It's a never ending print of all the screens of the application, as if the main output instead of sending it to the monitor, sends it to the printer! It creates a unnamed document with N/D pages and keeps printing forever. We have to turn the printer off and then kill the document in the spool to stop it... The printer is installed with a Generic/Text driver, and has happened to us both in WindowsXP and Win7. What can this be? Thanks in advance

  I have installed an HP DeskJet 4620 driver on a win 7 machine. All works perfectly for several days, and than printing is not longer possible. Instead I get the message: "Unable to communicate with printer". This happened on every Win 7 PC I tried, and none of the HP/MS sites contain any relevant info... (Posting this so that the answer appears online, as I did solve it after much work) Solution: It appears that HP installation puts a unique "port" called "HP Network re-discovery". It stops working after some time (possibly after the first time the printer/pc enter sleep mode). BUT, the standard MS TCP port works just fine. So: Go to "Printers" Right click Printer Click "Printer properties" and then "Printer" or "Fax" (for both - do all this twice) Click "Add Port..." Select "Standard TCP Port" Fill in details Move printer to use the new port by un-checking the old one and checking the new one Happy printing.

• How to script printer creation on a Windows Server 2008 R2 clustered print server?

  As per subject. I've found some ways of scripting printer creation on Windows print servers using WMI, but it looks like WMI doesn't support clustered print servers (or clustered servers at all). The scripts in C:\Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts are useless because, they are not cluster-aware and end up creating the printers on the active cluster node (just like using WMI). The only tool I found that was able to work on a clustered print server is printui.exe (shortcut for rundll32 printui.dll, PrintUIEntry), but it can't create TCP printing ports: it can only add printers if the port already exists. How can I completely script printer creation (including TCP printing ports!) on a clustered Windows Server 2008 R2 print server?
