• How do I get movies to work in my dual CD/DVD computer?

  I have an older Dell Optiplex GX620. It has an IDE CD drive and an IDE DVD drive. I cannot seem to get Ubuntu 14.04 to allow movies to play. I've tried installing libdvdcss2 as well as the libdvdread4. VLC was installed last, but each time I attempt to play a movie, the player flashed briefly, then goes back to the initial screen like I didn't even have a DVD in the drive. I'm fairly new to the linux world, so any/all suggestions would be helpful.

• How to solve dual monitor issue, which happens only during X start?

  When is loading and two monitors are connected, instead of a login screen I see this: ...after clicking OK, selection appears: Then I'm following to console login, disconnecting by hand the secondary monitor cable, restart lightdm with a command sudo service lightdm restart ...and voila! System loads fine. If I disconnect the cable before boot X will be loaded fine too. It's not a nice 'feature' when I have to disconnect the cable each boot or X restart. I was trying to delete monitors.xml but it didn't help. The situation relates to my notebook with Intel integrated GPU. The same happens on two different pairs of monitors: at the office and at home. How can I fix this? Ubuntu 12.04 x64 Desktop with default Unity GUI.

• How do you dual boot Windows 7/8 seperatly with GRUB?

  I installed the beta version of Windows 8 and re-installed GRUB. When I boot my computer and select Windows 7, I get the new Windows 8 booting screen asking to boot between either Windows 7 or 8. If I choose Windows 7, my computer then restarts and I have to select Windows 7 again in order to boot into 7. But if I choose Windows 8 it boots right up. I understand I can choose which OS to boot by default, but I want my GRUB options to be the only way to choose between OS's. So my question is, how can I set this up so that when I click on Windows 7, I go there, and when I select Windows 8, I boot 8?

I guess what I need to know is do I need the ATI proprietary driver or will the open source driver from Ubuntu (additional drivers) work? I want to expand the desktop between the two monitors. Still finishing install and running updates now, I just wanted to gather all documentation and downloads prior to doing what is necessary. Thanks Geeve

  Im new to Ubuntu and liked it a lot! however after testing it on my old crappy laptop i now want to remove it. Ive looked at tutorials on how to uninstall and it says to start by deleting the linux partition of the hard drive.however after opening Computer management, I cannot locate my linux partition. same as when I go to System Configuration, and click on the "boot" tab, my computer does not list any operating system other than Windows 7. Any Way around this or perhaps a different way to uninstall?

  I have bought two ATI Radeon 4350 HD graphics cards and they both work well seperately. But only the first one will output most of the time. If I go to System - Appearance - Monitors it will only detect the monitor on the first graphics card. I have check using hardinfo and the system has definitely detecting both of the graphics cards so I don't know why it isn't detecting the monitor. I am running Maverick 64 bit

Can I connect to a router A using wireless and a separate router B using wired ethernet at the same time without having to switch back and forth? Thanks for replying so quickly. I wish to connect to two separate networks. The wireless connection is to router A which is connected to broadband internet. The wired connection is to router B which I wish to share files and a printer on 1 or 2 other desktops also using wired connections on B and maybe using synergy to have only one keyboard and mouse for 2 desktops. The wireless laptop is the only one required to have internet access.

• What exactly is a chroot? Is it similar to a simultaneous dual boot?

  It has been suggested to me that the use of a chroot might solve my problem of building an application that must run on an embedded device. I have inferred from this description that it is somehow similar to creating the embedded environment locally on my machine which I can then use to develop on from my desktop development machine. Is this the right way to look at the functionality or have I totally misunderstood? In order to get some idea of how it works I read this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebootstrapChroot which I will attempt to make a chroot for an old Ubuntu version on my machine. However, as I am a total linux novice, I am a bit concerned that as I do not entirely know what I am doing is there anyway that I could end up with an unusable system?? • Nitrogen [Apply] seems to be sent to background. Dual monitors, two wallpapers.

  I'm trying to get two separate wallpapers for my two monitor set up. I've installed nitrogen which I heard is able to do this. However when I press apply in the nitrogen GUI nothing happens on my screens and the old wallpaper is left up. When I log out I can briefly see the wallpaper set up I designed with nitrogen but then it goes back to the old wallpaper. I feel like something is overriding the nitrogen settings. Any help with how to change this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• Any reason to prefer video adapter with two DVI ports versus one DVI/one VGA for DVI/VGA optional dual monitors?

  I am looking to buy a new video card to power two identical monitors. The monitors came with both DVI and VGA cables, so I am able to use either. My current video card has two DVI ports on the back, so I have both monitors connected via DVI at present. I have noticed that many modern video cards have a DVI/VGA/HDMI port trio and that cards with two DVI ports seem somewhat more scarce. Essentially, I have more options available to me for purchasing cards with a DVI/VGA/HDMI trio than with a DVI/DVI duo. My question is, are there any sound reasons to go to the extra effort of finding a card with two DVI ports versus simply running one of my monitors through a DVI and one through a VGA on a DVI/VGA/HDMI card? Quality differences? Any variety of image asymmetry? Configuration difficulties (I dual boot Windows and Ubuntu)? Anything else?

  I've seen some people suggesting to get a motherboard that supports two processors and stick two Xeon Nehalem processors in it. Could you use this system as a desktop PC or is this useless or even impossible? It's more hypothetical question if Windows 7 would support such a set-up. I know you could just take an i7, but wouldn't two of those processors be a whole lot more awesome? Like the previous generation Skulltrails? The idea would be to have a motherboard like this ASUS Z8NA-D6C Dual LGA 1366 Intel 5500 ATX and two Xeons (since I don't think i7's could be used) Intel Xeon E5405 Harpertown to run something like Windows 7 Ultimate.

• How to prevent Ubuntu from combining networks on 2 NIC server?

  I've got a Ubuntu Server 10.10 with 2 network interfaces with a cable plugged into both going to switches on completely different networks with different routers. One network is the 10.1.10.X network with a separate gateway/router - the server has an IP of 10.1.10.50 with the gateway IP of 10.1.10.1. The other interface is 10.2.10.X, IP 10.2.10.50, gateway 10.2.10.1. All my Mac machines are on the 10.2.10.X network, and all servers on the 10.1.10.X. The ONLY connection between the two is this machine. From a Mac in my office, I CANNOT ping any computer on the 10.1.10.X network except the Ubuntu machine I'm talking about. However, under the Shared column in Finder, I can see every server on the other network listed. That makes me believe that somehow this Ubuntu machine is letting certain requests span both networks, which is a security problem. Hope this is enough info.

• Multiple IP addresses to one NIC, but advanced IP settings window only shows one?

  The ipconfig of my Windows Server 2003 server shows that the IP addresses 10.0.0.3, 10.0.0.11, and 10.0.0.12 are assigned to it. However, when I look in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window for that connection, I only see the IP address of 10.0.0.3 listed there. In the Support tab for the connection, it shows that it's connected through 10.0.0.12, and in the Support Details window, it shows all the previously mentioned IP addresses. Where are these phantom IP addresses being stored and how can I free them up so I don't have any IP conflicts?

• Can Xen be configured to dedicate only one port of a dual-port NIC to a domU?

  I'm using CentOS 5.4 on my dom0 with a stock Xen kernel. I'm attempting to use the pciback module to hide some of the Ethernet ports from the host and reserve them for a domU I intend to use for a firewall (process described here). However, when I launch the domU, I get the following error message: Using config file "/etc/xen/firewall". • OpenSolaris livecd, NForce NIC driver, and NTFS USB mounting. Oh My!

  I'm attempting to install OpenSolaris 2009.06 on my server. Before I do I would like to test that everything works and am running in to problems. It has an Abit AN-M2 motherboard with an NForce chipset. The driver config utility says that I need a third-party driver and links me to http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/. Scrolling to the bottom, I have downloaded both tgzs just in case. Now the fun part: The only way to get this on to the computer is via a USB drive since I can't access the network. Also, install CD in the drive otherwise I'd just burn them to DVD. Since my USB key is NTFS formatted I cannot mount it since the install CD seems to be lacking NTFS drivers which require more downloaded packages. What should I do? The server will simply be a dumb NAS and I know that there exists other OpenSolaris-based flavors such as Nexenta but from what I read the stock install is likely the best. If this is not the case and pursuing a different flavor is required or better I will also accept that as an answer (but please don't jump straight to it).

• How do I properly dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 on an UEFI system?

  I have an HP Z210 with Windows 7, which is UEFI based. I'd like to dual boot it to Ubuntu 11.10 with GRUB2, but am having problems due to the UEFI. The install CD goes to the end, but then the machine always boots right into Windows. These problems are apparently documented (here and here), but there's no consensus as to what the simplest solution is. Any recommendations? I want Ubuntu and Windows to both be bootable. (Perhaps if I knew more about UEFI and its system partition, and how it differs from BIOS and MBR, I'd be in a better position. So background answers explaining how UEFI loads up are very appreciated.)

  I am currently writing a bash script (for Nagios), and I would like to be able to detect if specific network cards are up or not. My best guess is to do something like this: ifconfig eth0 | grep UP | wc -l or: ethtool eth0 | grep "Link detected: yes" | wc -l Are either/both of those reliable ways of testing if the network card is up, or is there a better option? Perhaps there is a flag on ethtool which will do precisely what I want? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/pointers! Rich

  I am building a new computer and have already installed XP Pro on drive 1 partition 1. Drive 1 is a 500 gig SATA with 4 partitions (1 = 50 gig, 2 = 50 gig, 3 =200 gig, 4 = 200 gig). Drive 2 is a 160 gig SATA with 2 patitions (1 = 60 Gig, 2 = 100 gig). I would like to install win 7 on drive 2, partition 1 to dual boot with xp on drive 1, partition 1. • Windows 7 Remote Desktop with dual monitors wont wake up.

  I run Windows 7 64bit with dual monitors at work. If i connect from home using remote desktop, the next morning i cannot wake up the monitors. The computer seems to be fine (i can connect again from another pc using remote desktop) but monitor will stay blank. I've tried unplugging the monitors and reconnecting them but still frustrating. • Using iptables to block ALL outgoing traffic from one NIC?

  Hi, I must pretty bad at Googling as this seems like a very basic question but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere... and man iptables is a very long read! I have two NICs - eth0 and eth1 - on a linux box and I want to block ALL outbound traffic (TCP and UDP across all ports) from one of the NICs, so that no traffic makes its way back up to the router.   I have a dual-boot machine with Windows and Linux on it. It doesn't reside at my hand, instead , it's placed in the datacenter which I have to access remotely. For most of time, I work on Linux. But there is some occasion that I have to use the Windows OS on it. Here is the problem. I hope to do all those following things remotely. Do some magic to Grub. Reboot the machine from Linux. Grub boots Windows. Access Windows remotely. Work done. Reboot the machine from Windows. Grub boots Linux. So I wonder whether I can set the booting target at the next time, for only once? Thanks.
