  • Series On Embedded Development (Part 1)

    This is the first in a series of entries on developing applications for the embedded environment. Most of this information is relevant to any type of embedded development (and even for desktop and server too), not just Java. This information is based on a talk Hinkmond Wong and I gave at JavaOne 2012 entitled Reducing Dynamic Memory in Java Embedded Applications. One thing to remember when developing embeddded applications is that memory matters. Yes, memory matters in desktop and server environments as well, but there's just plain less of it in embedded devices. So I'm going to be talking about saving this precious resource as well as another precious resource, CPU cycles...and a bit about power too. CPU matters too, and again, in embedded devices, there's just plain less of it. What you'll find, no surprise, is that there's a trade-off between performance and memory. To get better performance, you need to use more memory, and to save more memory, you need to need to use more CPU cycles. I'll be discussing three Memory Reduction Categories: - Optionality, both build-time and runtime. Optionality is about providing options so you can get rid of the stuff you don't need and include the stuff you do need. - Tunability, which is about providing options so you can tune your application by trading performance for size, and vice-versa. - Efficiency, which is about balancing size savings with performance.

  • HTML character decoding in Objective-C / Cocoa Touch

    First of all, I found this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/659602/objective-c-html-escape-unescape, but it doesn't work for me. My encoded characters (come from a RSS feed, btw) look like this: &#038; I searched all over the net and found related discussions, but no fix for my particular encoding, I think they are called hexadecimal characters.     I am using a jQuery ticker which is pretty cool. It works well with predefined content, but I want to build my tags dynamically by getting the data from a feed via the $.ajax method. http://progadv.uuuq.com/jStockTicker/ The problem is when I do this the ticker wont work, as it looks like the function might be loading before my page content has loaded.   • How do I suppress script errors when using the WPF WebBrowser control?

    I have a WPF application that uses the WPF WebBrowser control to display interesting web pages to our developers on a flatscreen display (like a news feed). The trouble is that I occasionally get a HTML script error that pops up a nasty IE error message asking if I would like to "stop running scripts on this page". Is there a way to suppress this error checking? NOTE: I have disabled script debugging in IE settings already.

  • Using Android SAXParser, one my my XML Elements is mysteriously breaking in half.

    And its not '&' Im using the SAXParser object do parse the actual XML. This is normally done by passing a URL to the XMLReader.Parse method. Because my XML is coming from a POST request to a webservice, I am saving that result as a String and then employing StringReader / InputSource to feed this string back to the XMLReader.Parse method. However, something strange is happening at the 2001st character of the XMLstring. The 'characters' method of the document handler is being called TWICE in between the startElement and endElement methods, effectively breaking my string (in this case a project title) into two pieces. Because I am instantiating objects in my characters method, I am getting two objects instead of one. This line, about 2000 chars into the string fires 'characters' two times, breaking between "Lower" and "Level" <title>SUMC-BOOKSTORE, LOWER LEVEL RENOVATIONS</title> When I bypass the StringReader / InputSource workaround and feed a flat XML file to XMLReader.Parse, it works absolutely fine. Something about StringReader and or InputSource is somehow screwing this up. Here is my method that takes and XML string and parses is through the SAXParser. public void parseXML(String XMLstring) { try { SAXParserFactory spf = SAXParserFactory.newInstance(); SAXParser sp = spf.newSAXParser(); XMLReader xr = sp.getXMLReader(); xr.setContentHandler(this); // Something is happening in the StringReader or InputSource // That cuts the XML element in half at the 2001 character mark. StringReader sr = new StringReader(XMLstring); InputSource is = new InputSource(sr); xr.parse(is); } catch (IOException e) { Log.e("CMS1", e.toString()); } catch (SAXException e) { Log.e("CMS2", e.toString()); } catch (ParserConfigurationException e) { Log.e("CMS3", e.toString()); } } I would greatly appreciate any ideas on how to not have 'characters' firing off twice when I get to this point in the XML String. Or, show me how to use a POST request and still pass off the URL to the Parse function. THANK YOU.

  • run a function every x seconds in c++

    I'm trying to build a feed reader in C++, so I need the program to check for new feeds intermittently. However, the user needs still to be able to interact with the program, so the suggestion that I seem to keep finding, to have the system wait, doesn't work for me.     Is there any way to upload an image (UIImage) directly from an iPhone app to a user's wall/feed? All the samples I see are either using a json-embedded link or they use the photos.upload call with album ID (aid) which results in the user getting the image in his photo album(s). What I want to do is to upload an (UI)Image created (by the user) inside an iPhone app and upload to his/her wall. Is this possible? Sample code would be highly appreciated.

The data returned is ATOM FEED which is kind a hard to read / interpret with its format, too much information is returned people from various departments would execute different queries ( HTTP Request) and i wanted them to display simple XML or atleast something more user friendly like HTML I have tried ACCEPT attribute of the request to be plain XML and it still returns ATOM Thanks -- Khalil
