• Practical guide to programming paradigms ?

  I think I might be misunderstanding the whole thing and I am looking for some programming wisdom. When faced with a programming challenge, I feel the most important question is "which programming paradigm(s) are better suited to handle it, and how to apply them". A distant second is "which language to use". Yet it seems that most of the programming related content I stumble upon on the Internet has it exactly backwards and focuses mostly on the language choice. An object-oriented solution is fundamentaly the same, whether it's implemented in c++, Java or PHP... So where is the paradigm centered content? Where is the "practical guide to programming paradigms and implementations" and other literature helping bringing real-world and programming concepts together? Note: I already know about "Programming Paradigms for Dummies: What Every Programmer Should Know" from Peter Van Roy.

  Hi Everyone, here's a problem that i've run into lately: I have a listview with a custom adapter class, the adapter takes in a listview and populates the listview with elements from it. Now, i'd like to have a button on each row of a listview to remove the item from it. How should i approach this problem?   At the moment I'm working through "Practical Common Lisp" from Peter Seibel. In the chapter "Practical: A Simple Database" (http://www.gigamonkeys.com/book/practical-a-simple-database.html) Seibel explains keyword parameters and the usage of a supplied-parameter with the following example: (defun foo (&key a (b 20) (c 30 c-p)) (list a b c c-p)) Results: (foo :a 1 :b 2 :c 3) ==> (1 2 3 T) (foo :c 3 :b 2 :a 1) ==> (1 2 3 T) (foo :a 1 :c 3) ==> (1 20 3 T) (foo) ==> (NIL 20 30 NIL) So if I use &key at the beginning of my parameter list, I have the possibility to use a list of 3 parameters name, default value and the third if the parameter as been supplied or not. Ok. But looking at the code in the above example: (list a b c c-p) How does the lisp interpreter know that c-p is my "supplied parameter"?

• Subclipse plugin doesn't work in Eclipse?

  Hi, even though there was no error when installing Subclipse in Eclipse. I won't see the SVN perspective at all? I have tried with "Eclipse Classic 3.5.1" and with "Eclipse for PHP Developers". After downloading and unzipping the packages I used Eclipse's "Install Software" mechanism to install Subclipse 1.6.x. I followed the steps described here: http://www3.math.tu-berlin.de/jreality/mediawiki/index.php/Subclipse_installation_in_eclipse_galileo. But after Eclipse re-starts I don't get any SVN Repository perspective? I have tried to un-install/re-install all the software components many times now. Finally after 3 hours of trying I am giving up. Does anyone have any hint what I am missing? Thanks! Peter

• Parameterized SQL statements vs. very simple method

  When I started to write the first SQL-Statements in my programs I felt quite comfortable with protecting myself against SQL-Injection with a very simple method that a colleague showed me. It replaced all single quotes with two single quotes. So for example there is a searchfield in which you can enter a customername to search in the customertable. If you would enter Peter's Barbershop The SELECT Statement would look like SELECT * FROM Customers WHERE Customername = 'Peter''s Barbershop' If now an attacker would insert this: ';DROP TABLE FOO; -- The statement would look like: SELECT * FROM Customers WHERE Customername = ''';DROP TABLE FOO;--' It would not drop any table, but search the customertable for the customername ';DROP TABLE FOO;-- which, I suppose, won't be found ;-) Now after a while of writing statements and protecting myself against SQL-Injection with this method, I read that many developers use parameterized statements, but I never read an article where "our" method was used. So definitely there is a good reason for it. What scenarios would parameterized statements cover but our method doesn't? What are the advantages of parameterized statements compared to our method?   I have a list that I need sorted by two fields. I've tried using OrderBy in LINQ but that only allows me to specify one field. I'm looking for the list to be sorted by the first field and then if there are any duplicates in the first field to sort by the second field. For example I want the results to look like this (sorted by last name then first name). Adams, John Smith, James Smith, Peter Thompson, Fred I've seen that you can use the SQL like syntax to accomplish this but I am looking for a way to do it with the OrderBy method. • Another answer to the CAPTCHA problem?

  Most sites at least employ server access log checking and banning along with some kind of bot prevention measure like a CAPTCHA (those messed-up text images). The problem with CAPTCHAs is that they poss a threat to the user experience. Luckily they now come with user friendly features like refresh and audio versions. Anyway, like linux vs windows, it isn't worth the time of a spammer to customize and/or build a script to handle a custom CAPTCHA example that only pertains to one site. Therefore, I was wondering if there might be better ways to handle the whole CAPTCHA thing. In A Better CAPTCHA Peter Bromberg mentions that one way would be to convert the image to HTML and display it embedded in the page. On http://shiflett.org/ Chris simply asks users to type his name into an input. Examples like this are ways to simplifying the CAPTCHA experience while decreasing the value for spammers. Does anyone know of more good examples I could use or see any problem with the embedded image idea?

• Auto-generate WebControls

  I want to generate .net code from a template so that it more rapid, so lazy developers (and I mean that in the nicest possible way!) don't have to write them in the IDE, compile them, etc... I know I can roll my own tool which generates the code using reflection (by reading in some text file, etc), but I just wondered if there was an easier than starting from scratch since this is what ASP.NET basically does already; so is there anyway to leverage this? E.g. to quote Peter A. Bromberg: Even an ASPX page with no code on it gets turned into an instance of the System.Web.UI.Page class. The page is parsed by the ASP.NET engine when it is first requested, and then its JIT compiled version is cached in the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder as long as the application is running and the .aspx page hasn't been changed. Ideally I want to auto-generate WebControls, but examples of anything closely related will do. C# Examples preferred also, but anything considered :)

• Where would you document standardized complex data that is passed between many objects and methods?

  Hi All, I often find myself with fairly complex data that represents something that my objects will be working on. For example, in a task-list app, several objects might work with an array of tasks, each of which has attributes, temporal expressions, sub tasks and sub sub tasks, etc. One object will collect data from web forms, standardize it into a format consumable by the class that will save them to the database, another object will pull them from the database, put them in the standard format and pass them to the display object, or the update object, etc. The data itself can become a fairly complex series of arrays and sub arrays, representing a 'task' or list of tasks. For example, the below might be one entry in a task list, in the format that is consumable by the various objects that will work on it. Normally, I just document this in a file somewhere with an example. However, I am thinking about the best way to add it to something like PHPDoc, or another standard doc system. • Setting up a non-emacs Common Lisp Dev Env for web application development?

  I am trying to set up a Common Lisp Dev Env for web application development on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64-bit box and I can't find a single decent guide that is targeted at noobs. The closest I came is with Peter Seibel's Lisp in a box but I detest Emacs with a passion and it seems to have older versions of SBCL and CLISP (which are my preferred CL implementations). I do not want to use any of the commercial implementations. I am looking for a simple setup to write some very basic CRUD apps involving possibly hunchentoot, some framework like weblocks,CL-WHO, CL-SQl, sqlite or some datastores from the nosql family like mongo and couch.. Assuming, I go with either SBCL or CLISP on Linux, what is the best tool to manage packages and libraries? ASDF? I am looking for simplicity and consistency and I don't expect to use a ton of libs...

• Adding subview, gets delayed?

  Hi, i didn't really know how to title this question, but here's a thing that really kills me: In my app i have a UITableView, UISegmentedControl and UINavigationBar. Once UISegmentedControl gets one of its segments selected i want to show a UIActivityIndicatorView on the UINavigationBar and then parse an xml file and present the results in a table. Everything works almost as i want it to, except one thing, the activity indicator view gets added to the uinavigationbar after the parser finishes, even though the method showLoading that adds UIIndicatorView to UINavigationBar gets before parser is initialised. Can anyone explain it? is there something i might be missing? maybe the ui needs to get redrawn? thanks peter

• A Question About the Expressive Power of Higher-Order Logical Reasoning Formalisms.

I do not really know if this is scientifically proven, but I've read in a book (It was a relatively modern AI book by Peter Norvig) that secon-order logical programming could be more expressive than existing first-order languages. The question is: Is it statistically/symbolically proven that higher-order predicate logics exceed first-order predicates in their expressive power? Or they just bring the modularity/convenience/maintainability to your knowledge bases? Additionally: If there is some kind of firm direction in which I could go seeking more expressive power than I have (I mean exactly the descriptive potential of the symbols I write in given semantics/syntax) - then I would be glad to hear just almost everything :) Thank you.

• List of fundamental data structures - what am I missing?

  I've been studying my fundamental data structures a bunch recently, trying to make sure I've got them down cold. By "fundamental", I mean the real basic ones. Fancy ones like Red-Black Trees and Bloom Filters are clearly worth knowing, but they're usually either enhancements of fundamental ones (Red-Black Trees are binary search trees with special properties to keep them balanced) or they're only useful in very specific situations (Bloom Filters). So far, I'm "fluent" in the following data structures: Arrays Linked Lists Stacks/Queues Binary Search Trees Heaps/Priority Queues Hash Tables However, I feel like I'm missing something. Are there any fundamental ones that I'm forgetting about? EDIT: Added these after posting the question Strings (suggested by catchmeifyoutry) Sets (suggested by Peter) Graphs (suggested by Nick D and aJ) B-Trees (Suggested by tloach) I'm a little on-the-fence about whether these are too fancy or not, but I think they're different enough from the fundamental structures (and important enough) to be worth studying as fundamental.

Shows some common design idioms expressed in C, like encapsulation, modularity and that kind of thing. Is example-driven with a lot of good-quality code. I already know the language itself so books like otherwise wonderful "Expert C Programming" by Peter van der Linden is not really what i am looking for.   I have data related as follows: A table of Houses A table of Boxes (with an FK back into Houses) A table of Things_in_boxes (with an FK back to Boxes) A table of Owners (with an FK back into Houses) In a nutshell, a House has many Boxes, and each Box has many Things in it. In addition, each House has many Owners. If I know two Owners (say Peter and Paul), how can I list all the Things that are in the Boxes that are in the Houses owned by these guys? • CakePhp: model recursive associations and find

  Hello to everybody! I've some trouble with a find() on a model on CakePhp. I have three model relationed in this way: Project(some_fields, item_id) ------belongsTo----- Item(some_fields, item_id) ------belongsTo----- User(some_fields campi, nickname) I need to do a find() and retrieve all fields from project, a field from Item and the nickname field from User. This is my code: $this->set('projects', $this->Project->find('all', array('recursive' => 2))); but my output doesn't contains the user object. I've tried with Containable behaviour but the output is the same. What is broken? Many many Thanks Peter
