• Lag when recording with xvidcap?

  I used Xvidcap to record my desktop, but the quality of video was too bad (it lagged so much). I also tried with all output formats that xvidcap support, increase the frame-per-second as much as possible and the quality always at 100% but nothing changed. • System freezes while not in use, how do I fix this?

  Bare with me, the following is a bit winded. I have Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop 64-bit installed on my laptop and up until a few weeks ago it has been running great. Then one day, while I was not using the laptop it froze. I was logged in as my user but had locked the screen locked and closed the lid. I didn't notice that it had frozen until I opened the lid and wiggled the mouse to try and log in. The screen remained black and I got no response. I immediately tried Alt + F2, F3, F4, etc. but got no response. The only thing I could do was hold the power button to power off the machine. The freezing has happened as quickly as within 10-20 minutes of the system being logged off and lid closed and as long as 4-6 hours. My machine is NOT configured to go into standby when plugged in and this has happened both on AC power and battery. Troubleshooting I have performed: I uninstalled programs I knew that I had installed between when it was working fine and having problems. Those programs were CrashPlan, Shutter and Conky. After uninstalling ALL of these programs the freezing still occurs. Next, I decided to SSH into the machine from my desktop and leave an htop and tail of the syslog running. Here are screenshots of the last thing shown on both when the system froze: htop, syslog Here is a dump of my syslog after another freeze. The freeze happened at 9:14 and I didn't notice it until about 10 minutes later and rebooted, hence the 10 minute gap from 9:14 to 9:24. In the above syslog dump I noticed a lot of NVRM: os_raise_smp_barrier(), invalid context! and upon investigating that message learned it was from the proprietary Nvidia driver I had installed. Thinking this could be part of the problem I uninstalled the Nvidia driver and reverted to using the Nouveau driver. The computer still froze after a few hours. Lastly, thinking the problem could be caused by overheating I used compressed air to blow out any dust in the CPU vents and all other openings on the laptop. None of the above troubleshooting has helped and the freezing still occurs. What other steps can I take to troubleshoot and/or fix this problem? Note: Yesterday X started to eat up a lot of CPU power and eventually froze my system while I was forwarding an X session over SSH (from another PC to my laptop). I'm unsure if this is related or not as it doesn't match any of the symptoms of the problem above. Aside from this, the system has never frozen while in use, even under heavy load. EDIT: I just ran Memtest86+ and it made it through two passes without any errors. Just eliminating possible causes here.

  My Xubuntu system recognizes my speakers, and I can change the mixer settings to make them the active sound device, but no matter what I do, the hardware dial will only affect the onboard sound device. generic-usb 0003:046D:0A19.0003: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.00 Device [ Logitech Logitech Z205 ] on usb-0000:00:1d.1-1/input2 updated to reflect the fact that this was Xubuntu desktop (from Kubuntu install originally) where I had this problem. I was able to easily do this from Ubuntu Natty installation.

• Using AdSense to show ads to logged-in users

  I know that you can grant authorization permissions to Google AdSense so that it can 'log in' and see what other logged in users can see (e.g. in a private forum), so that the ads it displays are better targetted. Extending this principle further: I am making a site which will show completely different content for each individual user (i.e. not 'common' content like a forum in which everybody sees essentially the same thing). You could think of this content as similar to the way each Facebook user has a different news feed, but it is the 'same' page. Complicating things further, the URLs for this site will be simple, e.g. '/home' and '/somepage', and will not usually include unique identifiers to differentiate between users (e.g. '/home?user=32i42'). My questions are: Is creating an account purely for AdSense to log in to the site with worth it in this case, seeing as it will be seeing it's own 'personalized' version and not any other user's? More importantly: is that against the Google AdSense Terms of Service? (I can't seem to figure that one out) How would you go about this problem?

• WPF DataGrid using a DataGridTemplateColumn rather than a DataGridComboBoxColumn to show selected value at load

  My problem was that using a DataGridComboBoxColumn I couldn’t get it to show the selected value when the DataGrid loaded.  Instead, the user would have to click in the cells and like magic, the current selected values would appear and it looked the way I wanted it to on load. • Nautilus window initial geometry with Gnome 3

  I would like to open one or more Nautilus windows from the command line or a script at certain positions on my screen/desktop while in Gnome3. I could do this in Ubuntu 11.10 by specifying the geometry. For example, to open the window at the bottom right corner from the command line I could use: nautilus --geometry 600x475-0-0 ~/mystuff But using Gnome3 the geometry option is ignored, or overriden. Is there a way to make this work?

  This article will explain how to connect to any of the RSSBus OData Connectors with Tableau's business intelligence tool. While the example uses the Salesforce Connector, the same process can be followed for any of the OData Connectors. Step 1: Download and install both the Salesforce Connector from RSSBus and Tableau Desktop from Tableau. Step 2: Next you will want to configure the Salesforce Connector to connect with your Salesforce.com account. If you browse to the Help tab in the Salesforce Connector application, there is a link to the Getting Started Guide which will walk you through setting up the Salesforce Connector. Step 3: Once you have successfully configured the Salesforce Connector application, you will want to open Tableau and select the Connect to data option at the top left of the window. Step 4: Here you will click on the option labeled OData under the section labeled On a server. Step 5: A new pop up will appear. The box under Step 1 of the pop-up must contain the OData URL of the Salesforce Connector table. You can find this by clicking on the Settings tab of the Salesforce Connector. Once you have found the OData entry URL, you will need to append the table name that you want Tableau to connect with to the OData entry URL. In this example, we will connect to the Account table. Thus, the URL we enter will be: http://localhost:8181/sfconnector/data/conn/odata.rsc/Account. You will also need to add authentication options in this step. To do this, select the Use a Username and Password option in Step 2 of the pop-up and enter the Username and Password of the user who has access to the Salesforce Connector. When you are done, click the Connect button in Step 3 of the pop-up. Step 6: When the connection to the Salesforce Connector is successful, give the connection a name and click the OK button. Step 7: The table columns will be listed on the left side under the Dimensions section of the workspace. Step 8: To view your Salesforce.com data, you can right click under the table name in the Data section at the top left of the dashboard and select the View Data option. Your Saleforce.com data will appear in Tableau.

• Can't get utouch to show available wifi networks

  I have ubuntu touch installed on a 2014 Nexus 7. Swiping down from the wireless symbol reveals a "Network" menu with the choices Flight Mode, Wifi Settings, and Cellular Settings. Wifi Settings leads to another menu: Previous Networks, and Other Networks. Previous Networks shows a list of networks used in the past; Other Networks opens an empty box for typing in the name of a network. I don't see any way to show a list of available networks detected by the device. On rare occasions, swiping down the wireless symbol actually does bring up a list of detected networks. But most of the time ubuntu touch exhibits the behavior described above, with no apparent way to bring up the list of available wireless networks. I would like to see a list of the availble networks, if there is a way to do so. Edit: The wifi menu works properly now. Just needed a couple of reboots, it seems. I have other problems, though. If these other problems persist I will make a post specific to them. This device is a 2013 Nexus 7 4G. Not sure how to find the ubuntu version. Can't navigate the settings menu right now because it got stuck and there's no way to go back, except to reboot(!) I'll open multirom manager or boot into recovery and look for the information there.

• How do I connect to SDF on a Mobile device from desktop application?

  C# WinForms .Net 3.5 to SQL CE 3.5 on Mobile 6.1 Device I'd like to make a connection from a desktop application to a SDF database on my Windows Mobile device while it's connected via ActiveSync. Visual Studio lets me create a Data Connection to my device. The connections tests OK and I can view the data in the database using Visual Studio. I then create a form and try to fill a DataGridView. When I run the program I get an error that the path to the data base is not valid. How am I supposed to specify the Mobile device path in the connection string?   I have a freshly setup 12.04 LTS pc system (120 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, 16 GiB RAM); since a few days, I can't login to the graphical desktop anymore: there is very short flashing shell window which disappears very quickly, and I'm confronted with the login screen again. I believe there is something about modprobe and vbox, but I can't read it fast enough ... I can login to a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1). It did not help to chown all contents of my home directory to me:my-group, like suggested here. Can I somehow read the error output, e.g. by delaying it, redirecting it to a file, or having the system prompt me for pressing a key? Has possibly any recent update caused my problem? Should I install the pending updates? How, btw, without access to the graphical UI? I have some working knowledge about the Linux shell, but I'm new to Ubuntu. Any help would be appreciated.

• NRF Big Show 2011 -- Part 2

  One of the things I love about attending NRF is visiting the smaller booths to see what new innovative ideas have sprung up. After all, by watching emerging technologies we can get a sense of how the retail experience might change. After NRF I'm hoping to write a post on what I found, if anything, so be sure to check back. At the Oracle Retail booth we'll be demonstrating some of the aspects of the changing retail experience. These demos use a mix of GA and experimental components. Here are some highlights: 1. Checkin We wrote a consumer iPhone app we call Store Gateway that lets consumers access information from the store. They'll start by doing a checkin when they arrive that will alert the store manager via another iPhone app we wrote called Mobile Manager. Additionally, we display a welcome messaging using Starmount's digital sign. 2. Receive Offers There are three interaction points where a store can easily make an offer to a consumer: checkin, product scans, and checkout. For this demo we're calling our Universal Offer Engine at checkin to determine the best offer for this particular consumer. This offer is then displayed on the consumer's phone as well as on the digital sign. 3. Scan Products To thwart consumers from scanning product barcodes, we used Store Inventory Management to print QRCodes on shelf label then provided access to a scanner in the Store Gateway iphone app. When the consumer scans the shelf label they are shown product information provided by the retailer. 4. Checkout While we don't have a NFC-enabled mobile phone, we have a NFC chip that can attach to a phone. We're using this to checkout using a reader provided by ViVOTech. Tap the phone on the reader, and the POS accesses the customer#, coupons, and payment information. This really speeds the checkout process. 5. Digital Receipt After the transaction is complete, a digital copy of the receipt is sent to Intuit's QuickReceipts where consumers to store all their digital receipts. There's even an iPhone app that provides easy access to the receipts. This covers about half of what what we'll be showing, so be sure to stop by.   On Windows 7, dir or tree can't show unicode characters, even starting cmd with cmd /U So I would press Window Key + R to run something, and type in cmd /U so that the content might handle Unicode. And then using dir or tree /F, the content in Unicode won't show as Unicode. (in Window Explorer (file manager), the Unicode will show) Is there a way to handle it? To get Unicode characters to test your filenames, you can go to http://news.google.com/news?edchanged=1&ned=tw and you will be able to get many Unicode characters there (UTF-8)

• Launch script on login to RDS - server side

  I have a logon script that I want to be run when users login to remote desktop on my WinServer2008r2 box. I know I can do this client-side (in the RemoteDesktopClient "Run Program" options) but would rather it be enforced server-side. If I assign the logon script to a GPO, the script will be run whenever the user logs into their local PC. I would like to assign the logon script to the Remote Desktop Users group, but only when they're logging into remote desktop, not when they're logging into their own system. Thoughts?

  The description for "Use mandatory profiles on the RD Session Host server" is a little ambiguous: This policy setting allows you to specify whether Remote Desktop Services uses a mandatory profile for all users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server. If you enable this policy setting, Remote Desktop Services uses the path specified in the Set path for Remote Desktop Services Roaming User Profile policy setting as the root folder for the mandatory user profile. All users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server use the same user profile. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, mandatory user profiles are not used by users connecting remotely to the RD Session Host server. I have a situation where only some users need to use mandatory profiles for logging in to a Remote Desktop Session Host. If I have some users with ntuser.dat and some users ntuser.man in their roaming profile what will RD Session Host do To a user who has ntuser.man in their roaming profile and has the setting set to Disabled? To a user who has ntuser.dat in their roaming profile and has the setting set to Enabled?

  So the release of Windows Server 2012 has removed a lot of the old Remote Desktop related configuration utilities. In particular, there is no more Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration utility that gave you access to the RDP-Tcp properties dialog that let you configure a custom certificate for the RDSH to use. In its place is a nice new consolidated GUI that is part of the overall "edit deployment properties" workflow in the new Server Manager. The catch is that you only get access to that workflow if you have the Remote Desktop Services role installed (as far as I can tell). This seems like a bit of an oversight on Microsoft's part. How can we configure a custom SSL certificate for RDP on Windows Server 2012 when it's running in the default Remote Administration mode without needlessly installing the Remote Desktop Services role?

  I'm attempting to troubleshoot problems with a laptop computer(HP 8510w) while it's connected to a server of mine via Remote Desktop. I double checked all the settings on the win2k3 server for remote desktop to verify that remote desktop isn't what's causing the disconnect issues, and other people using different computers/laptops can all connect to remote desktop correctly with no issues. These problems happen specifically when the laptop is connected via wifi(several different wifi sources, so it's not an ISP issue) as well as connected via a Verizon data card. However there's no network downtime when the laptop is resting in the docking station and plugged into the network with the remote desktop server. These problems have also only recently occurred since a recent hard drive failure in which a new hard drive was purchased and the laptop had a fresh install of windows xp professional. There's no special software used on this machine, just office 2003. So my question is, what could cause two types of internet access to fail while other types do not? If it is infact related to the win2k3 server, why is this particular laptop getting disconnected when others are not and are all on at the same time?

  Does remote desktop permit the guest user to log in? If so, how do I add the guest user the remote desktop ACL? I've added a password for guest using net user guest *, I just want to permit remote desktop logins.
