  • how to raise warning if return value is disregarded - gcc or static code check?

    - by Drakosha
    I'd like to see all the places in my code (C++) which disregard return value of a function. How can I do it - with gcc or static code analysis tool? Bad code example: int f(int z) { return z + (z*2) + z/3 + z*z + 23; } int main() { int i = 7; f(i); ///// <<----- here I disregard the return value return 1; } Update: it should work even if the function and its use are in different files free static check tool

  • [c++] Resolving namespace conflicts

    - by Kyle
    I've got a namespace with a ton of symbols I use, but I want to overwrite one of them: external_library.h namespace lottaStuff { class LotsOfClasses {}; class OneMoreClass {}; }; my_file.h using namespace lottaStuff; namespace myCustomizations { class OneMoreClass {}; }; my_file.cpp using myCustomizations::OneMoreClass; int main() { OneMoreClass foo; // error: reference to 'OneMoreClass' is ambiguous return 0; } How do I get resolve the 'ambiguous' error without resorting to replacing 'using namespace lottaStuff' with a thousand individual "using xxx;" statements?

  • Parallelism on two duo-core processor system

    - by Qin
    I wrote a Java program that draw the Mandelbrot image. To make it interesting, I divided the for loop that calculates the color of each pixel into 2 halves; each half will be executed as a thread thus parallelizing the task. On a two core one cpu system, the performance of using two thread approach vs just one main thread is nearly two fold. My question is on a two dual-core processor system, will the parallelized task be split among different processor instead of just utilize the two core on one processor? I suppose the former scenario will be slower than the latter one simply because the latency of communicating between 2 CPU over the motherboard wires. Any ideas? Thanks

  • Partially parse C++ for a domain-specific language

    - by PierreBdR
    I would like to create a domain specific language as an augmented-C++ language. I will need mostly two types of contructs: Top-level constructs for specialized types or declarations In-code constructs, i.e. to add primitives to make functions calls or idiom easier The language will be used for scientific computing purposes, and will ultimately be translated into plain C++. C++ has been chosen as it seems to offer a good compromise between: ease of use, efficiency and availability of a wide range of libraries. A previous attempt using flex and bison failed due to the complexity of the C++ syntax. The existing parser can still fail on some constructs. So we want to start over, but on better bases. Do you know about similar projects? And if you attempted to do so, what tools would you use? What would be the main pitfalls? Would you have recommendations in term of syntax?

  • Dynamic Column lookup with different pages in excel

    - by CinCity
    I have a multi page spread sheet in excel that needs to read information dynamically from columns on other pages and have these values show up on a main page. This is the formula I'm using: =IF(VLOOKUP($B:$B,'CP01'!$B:$BN,3,FALSE)="r","r", IF(VLOOKUP($B:$B,'CP01'!$B:$BN,3,FALSE)="a","a","")) CP01 is a sheet in the excel file and instead of look at the specific sheet I want it to look at all of the sheets in the file. Is there a way to do this as an excel formula or with excel-VBA? Edit: I also tried CP* (* being a wildcard character) and it didn't work. Edit2: Is there a way to match the value where the 'CP' is placed with its a other columns value?

  • ImageView Force closes my application

    - by BlueFireLady
    Hi there I am really a beginner, and I have been fighting with this problem for 3 days. :( I am able to get an image to show using a grid view and an adapter as in the grid view tutorial, but I wanted to be able to just use ImageView in the xml. public class HelloImage extends Activity { public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); ImageView gridview = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.gridview); gridview.setLayoutParams(new GridView.LayoutParams(85, 85)); gridview.setScaleType(ImageView.ScaleType.CENTER_CROP); gridview.setPadding(8, 8, 8, 8); gridview.setImageResource(R.drawable.hand_tool); } } When I run this it causes the app to force close when loading.

  • embedded dev. question - how to break free from a faulty serial port opening?

    - by user347266
    Under WindowsCE, C++ project, I'm trying to work with devices connected via both "real" serial ports and/or serial-to-usb wrappers ("virtual" serial ports); my problem is - when I try to open the port, if something goes wrong, the function never returns and the system goes into some non-responsive state and has to be eventually rebooted. I need to open the ports from the main thread. The question is - how can I make it happen in a controlled way?? this is the opening code snippet: std::ostringstream device_name; device_name << "\\.\COM" << port; m_port = ::CreateFile(device_name.str().c_str(), GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, 0, // exclusive access NULL, // no security OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED, // overlapped I/O NULL); // null template any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks!

  • Cross Domain Cookies Problem (ASP.NET)

    - by Laserson
    Hi guys, i have a problem with cross-domain cookies. I read a lot of documentation about sharing cookies between subdomains. The main idea of all articles is set Domain property to something like ".mydomain.com". I've created two domains on local IIS server - test1.local.boo and test2.local.boo. They works great and visible with browser. I have the following code: Site test1 - Writes cookie: HttpCookie myCookie = new HttpCookie("TestCookie"); myCookie.Domain = ".local.boo"; myCookie["msg"] = "Welcome from Cookie"; Response.Cookies.Add(myCookie); Site test2 - Reads cookie: HttpCookie cookie = Request.Cookies["TestCookie"]; if (cookie != null) { Response.Write(cookie["msg"]); } else { Response.Write("FAILED"); } This code always shows FAILED message. So it means that second site can't read cookie from the same subdomain. Where is my mistake??

  • C# Why does this code not show a GUI properly?

    - by Tom
    class Program { static String ChannelName = null; static Form1 f; static void Main() { f = new Form1(); f.Show(); try { MY CODE WHICH CALLS INTO ANOTHER CLASS BUT CANNOT PASS THE GUI INSTANCE AS IT USES REMOTING } } } I know this isnt the best/normal way to do it, but i need to write data to the GUI from a class which has bo instance of the GUI so i was going to call Program.method() and use a function to write to the GUI in program. However when i run the above my GUI displays but with the windows hourglass? Could someone show me a quick fix so that i can still crudely show the GUI, let the application code run and then later write to the GUI?

  • Ruby On Rails CMS Framework

    - by stel
    Hi! I want to create a framework fo rails application. It will be a rails application but packed into gem (like a Radiant CMS). It must work like this: gem install cmsframework and then: cmsframework the_app After that we have a sceleton of rails app without any controllers etc.. - all controllers loaded from cmsframework gem. If I want to rewrite some files (for example public/styles.css) I must simply create it in my app (the_app). If I want new functions in my app I can create a plugin. But the main functionalities must be loaded from cmsframework gem. What is the best way to implement this?

  • this == null; surely not, but yes

    - by pm100
    I would have said that this will segfault but apparently not #include <stdio.h> class foo { public: bool thingy() {return this == 0;}; }; int main() { foo *f = 0; if(f->thingy()) printf("eating hat\n"); } I just expect that 0-xxx will never work. I assume that if we had to do some vtabling it would fail; obviously cannot access any member variables either edit; sorry - no question there. THe question is "are you surprised like me?" and it seems the answer is yes. even though nobody said yes. I got a) of course this will work b) of course this will never work c) it is undefined behavior; your mileage will vary

  • Linq to Entities (EF): How to get the value of a FK without doing the join

    - by Chu
    I'm using the Linq to Entities. I've got my main table, Employee setup with a field named vendorID. Vendor ID is a foreign key into the Vendors table. As it is right now, the Employee object does not directly expose the vendorID. Instead, I can only access it this way: var employee = (from e in context.Employees.Include("tbl_vendors") where e.employeeID = 1 select e).FirstOrDefault(); //this gets the vendor ID int vendorID = employee.tbl_vendors.vendorID; That is just fine and dandy, but it is extra work on the database because it is forcing a join where none is needed. Is there a way to get that key value without being forced to do a join to the tbl_vendors table?

  • How can unit testing make parameter validation redundant?

    - by Johann Gerell
    We have a convention to validate all parameters of constructors and public functions/methods. For mandatory parameters of reference type, we mainly check for non-null and that's the chief validation in constructors, where we set up mandatory dependencies of the type. The number one reason why we do this is to catch that error early and not get a null reference exception a few hours down the line without knowing where or when the faulty parameter was introduced. As we start transitioning to more and more TDD, some team members feel the validation is redundant. Uncle Bob, who is a vocal advocate of TDD, strongly advices against doing parameter validation. His main argument seems to be "I have a suite of unit tests that makes sure everything works". But I can for the life of it just not see in what way unit tests can prevent our developers from calling these methods with bad parameters in production code. Please, unit testers out there, if you could explain this to me in a rational way with concrete examples, I'd be more than happy to seize this parameter validation!

  • Worth it to use jQuery UI hosted by Google?

    - by chobo2
    Hi So I heard good reasons why to use the jquery hosted on google because of caching. But I am not sure about jQuery UI though. I am guessing that the jQuery UI file hosted on google has every single extension and plugin (such as Draggable, etc). So is that not kind of a waste if say your only using only jQuery UI tabs? to get all that other stuff with it. Also I see they have some of the templates up for the css files. I am guessing the caching would be the main advantage of using the hosted file.

  • Clearcase and java process : changing view does not apply

    - by user1432310
    i have a simple application, which receives input from a user for a CC stream name, and is suppose to return the content of a specific file from this stream repository. I have tried doing this using a simple shell script: user enters stream name, java receives stream name, runs a process which runs a script "myccscript.sh" which contains "myinput=$1; cleartool setview $myinput" (or something like that). then i try reading the file and printing it's content in the java side. BUT, after the process is finished - the view is not the view from the user input - that environment was probably only valid for the process Ive created. how do i change the clearcase view to the main java process? Thanks!

  • Javascript: why I cannot load my external js page in Drupal ?

    - by Patrick
    hi, when I add the tag script to load an external javascript file, my page is not longer displayed. There are not error in Firebug, there are not errors such as "File not found" or "Not enough permissions", the browser just displays a blank page for some reason. <?php print $head; ?> <?php print $styles; ?> <?php print $scripts; ?> <script type="text/JavaScript" src="main.js" /> If I remove the last line everything works perfectly. The previous php lines are the standard Drupal head lines. This is the content of my js file: $(document).ready( function() { alert("hello"); }); thanks

  • SQLite: 2 Problems by working with table

    - by TianDong
    Hallo all, I have a SQliteDatabase object db, i want to create a table in db with the following code db.execSQL("CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS "+ TABLE2_NAME + " (exer_nr INTEGER PRIMARY KEY ,exerText varchar(250),answerA varchar(250),answerB varchar(250),answerC varchar(250),answerD varchar(250))"); An Error occur. Why? Is this too large? How can i fix it? Another problem: I want to insert a row into the table, whose "exerText" column contains the following code as part of it's content. main( ) { int m=12, n=34; printf("%d%d", m+ +,+ +n); printf("%d%d\n",n+ +,+ +m); } An Error occur because of the "" and '' symbols in the code. • Complete state of a process

    - by sravan
    hi all, I wrote a small program which is as follows: #include<stdio.h> int c=0; int main() { int a=10,b=20; printf("Hello World\n"); c = a+b; printf("%d\n",c); return 0; } I can create a.out file using the command gcc -save-temps helloworld.c. The save-temps flag allows us to save the intermediate files, helloworld.i, helloworld.s, helloworld.o Now i want to know exactly how the stack of this program changes during the execution. Can some one please tell me how to go about it. My aim of this question is to know exactly what all happens during the execution of any program.

  • How does C free() work?

    - by slee
    #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> int * alloc() { int *p = (int *)calloc(5,4); printf("%d\n",p); return p; } int main() { int *p = alloc(); free(p); printf("%d\n",p); p[0] = 1; p[1] = 2; printf("%d %d\n",p[0],p[1]); } As to the code segment, I allocate 5 ints,first. And then I free the memory. When I printf p, why does p sill have a value same to the memory address allocated first? And I also can assign value to p[0] and p[1]. Does this mean free() do nothing? Once I allocate memory, I can use later though I have freed it.

  • gprof and execl() - is it possible?

    - by Chris
    Background: I have a game (an old-school-esque MUD) which I've been attempting to profile with gprof. The documentation of gprof (on Linux 2.6) states that The profiled program must call "exit"(2) or return normally for the profiling information to be saved in the gmon.out file. Now, if I kill the server with the shutdown command, the application "returns normally" (i.e., main() returns) and I get a gmon.out to analyze. However, it's far more common to reboot the server. The reboot command does the following: Writes usernames and socket FD numbers to disc. Makes a call to execl(). The new process looks for the stored data, picks up the FDs, and moves on. I see the following error on the command line, as the whole process fails: Profiling timer expired ./program Question: Is it possible to get a gmon.out file from the execl()-calling process? Perhaps some environmental parameter to execl(), or else perhaps a different, gprof-friendly, system call to achieve the same effect (beginning a new process while preserving file descriptors)?
