• Private cloud solution [Eucalyptus,OpenStack, Nimbus] for Java deployments [Glassfish, Tomcat]

  I am interested in a way to have private cloud which would host Glassfish (or Tomcat) server. Which option from Eucalyptus, Openstack or Nimbus would be best to deploy java applications on it? Or maybe there is something other and I am looking wrong at the problem? The way I imagine this, that I should have some shared storage that I could expand by introducing new nodes to this cluster and have easy management for glassfish instances: something like virtual machines images that I can start and stop on demand and that image is shared among nodes. I don't need concrete step-by-step solution here but guidelines how this should be done are very welcome.

• Is there any way to make Mac OS X Spotlight only index the file names and not the contents?

  I do understand that the point of Spotlight is to look inside files, but it also returns file name matches, and that's what I need most of the time. Besides, Spotlight is running so absurdly slow on my system (Snow Leopard on the iMac '08), it's just unusable. I downloaded Canary and Spotlight wasn't able to find the app file for 15 minutes. It was already in the download stack, but as far as Spotlight goes, the file doesn't exist. Hence, I would like to know of a way to make Spotlight only index the file names, which would perhaps make it a bit faster. I'm looking at mimicking the behaviour of Windows applications such as AvaFind or Search Everything Edit: Let me highlight the fact that I am looking for an AvaFind or Search Everything replacement for Mac OS X. Go try one of these on a Windows machine and you'll understand my disappointment with Spotlight or any other popular search tools in OS X.

• Is Flash typically slow on Linux?

  Specifically, I'm running Mint 8 (Helena). I'm extremely new to Linux, and was searching for a solution that was user-friendly and GUI oriented. The box won't be used for much other than web browsing and word processing. Anyway, it runs relatively smoothly, except for Youtube videos... especially full-screen, which runs at like 1 FPS, and even after closing, slows Firefox to a crawl until I restart it. I'd seen an xkcd comic on the matter, but regarded it as a joke until now. Is this actually a problem? Are there any remedies I can try to smooth the applications?

• Database Connectivity Test with UDL File

  I bounced around between projects a lot last week.  What each project had in common was the need to validate at least one SQL connection.  Whether you have SQL tools like SSMS installed or not, this is a very easy task if you are aware of the UDL (Universal Data Link) files.  Create a new file and name it anything as long as it has the .udl extension. Open the file, choose a provider: Click Next >> or navigate to the Connection Tab to provide connection information.  Once you provide server and login credentials, the database list will populate.  At this point, you know the connection is valid. but go ahead and click the Test Connection button anyway. On the final tab, you can provide extra connection information like Application Name which can come in handy.  The All tab is beneficial if you want to build a valid connection string to include in your own applications.  If you save the file and then open in Notepad, you’ll find that said connection string: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=master;Data Source=(local);Application Name=TestApp I hope this tip helps save you some time.  How do you test if you don’t have SSMS installed?

  Running "powercfg -energy" under Windows 7 command line, I received a report with following three errors: System Availability Requests:Away Mode Request The program has made a request to enable Away Mode. Requesting Process \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe CPU Utilization:Processor utilization is high The average processor utilization during the trace was high. The system will consume less power when the average processor utilization is very low. Review processor utilization for individual processes to determine which applications and services contribute the most to total processor utilization. Average Utilization (%) 49.25 Platform Power Management Capabilities:PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer. I was wondering for the first error, what does "enable away mode" mean? for the second, what utilization percentage of CPU is reasonable? for the third, what is "PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM)"? • Progress 4GL and DB to Oracle and cloud

  Getting from client/server based 4GLs and databases where the 4GL is tightly linked to the database to Oracle and the cloud is not easy. The least risky and expensive option (in the short term) is to use the Progress OpenEdge DataServer for Oracle: Progress OpenEdge DataServer This eliminates the need to have to migrate the Progress 4GL to Java/J2EE. The database can be migrated using SQLWays Ispirer: Ispirer SQLWays ProgressDB migrations tool The Progress 4GL can remain as is. In order to get the application on the cloud there are a few approaches: 1. VDI - Virtual Desktop is a way to put all of the users desktop in a centralized environment off the desktop. This is great in cases where it is just not one client/server application that the user needs access too. In many cases, users will utilize MS Access, MS Excel, Crystal Reports and other tools to get at the Progress DB and other centralized databases. Vmware's acquistion of Wanova shows how VDI is growing in usage. Citrix is the 800 pound gorilla in the VDI space with Citrix WinFrame (now called XenDesktop). Oracle offers a VDI solution that Oracle picked up when it acquired Sun. 2. Hypervisor Server Virtualization - Of course you can place applications written in client/server languages like Progress 4GL buy using server virtualization from Oracle, VMWare, Microsoft, Citrix and others. 3. Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (aka: Terminal Services Client) The entire idea is to eliminate all the client/server desktop devices and connections which require desktop software and database drivers. • Recommended Approach to Secure your ADFdi Spreadsheets

  ADF desktop integration leverages ADF security to provide access to published spreadsheets within your application. In this article I discussed a good security practice for your existing as well as any new spreadsheets that you create. ADF Desktop integration uses the adfdiRemoteServlet to process and send request back and fort from and to the ADFmodel which is allocated in the Java EE container where our application is deployed. In other words this is one of the entry points to the application server. Having said that, we need to make sure that container-based security is provided to avoid vulnerabilities. So what is needed? For existing an new ADFdi applications you need to create a Security Constraint for the ADFdi servlet on the Web.xml file of our application. Fortunately JDeveloper 11g provides a nice visual editor to do this. Open the web.xml file and go to the security category Add a new Web Resource Collection give it a meaningful name and on the URL Pattern add /adfdiRemoteServlet click on the Authorization tab and make sure the valid-users  role is selected for authorization and Voila! your application now is more secured.

• Google Chrome Enterprise - Any Gotchas?

  Has anyone rolled out Google Chrome to a medium / large organisation? I would like to suggest it to our management (because I think it would work very nicely with some of our intranet applications), and I would like to find out what problems (if any) the rest of the world has been experiencing with it. Have you found any problems? I'm thinking of enterprise-level problems. I'm thinking that we can solve anything that requires a specific configuration / proxy setting / etc. I don't really know what I think might be a problem, but I wonder if there are any usability problems that occur when non-geeks use it? Or problems which only rear their ugly heads when you've got 50 users all doing something unexpected. Any helpful information or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. • Alternate Client for Cisco Unified Personal Communicator protocol

  At work we have an in-house chat system using CUPC. Does anyone else out there use this? There are a few things I do not like about this client: Where's the chat log? If I close the window out, I have no way of getting my conversation back. Tabbed interface? That would be nice. I hate having multiple chat windows up, having to arrange them around my desktop as more people start talking to me. I don't like that I have to use this one-off application for this protocol when other chat clients will handle 99% of the other protocols I use. Tell me: Is the protcol an open standard for which other applications have support? (pidgin, adium, digsby, etc.) If not, can I overcome these issues from within CUPC? Perhaps there are newer versions of the client that overcome these issues.

  for a project there will be me and one more programmer to develop a web service. i wonder how the development environment should be like. cause we need central storage (documents, pictures, business materials etc), file version handling, lamp (testing the web service) etc. i have never set up an environment for this before and want to have suggestions from experienced people which tools to use for effective collaboration. what crossed my mind: seperate applications: - google wave (for communication forth and back, setting up guide lines, other information) - team viewer (desktop sharing) - skype (calling) vps (ubuntu server): - svn (version tracking) - ftp (central storage) - lamp (testing the web service) - ssh (managing the vps) is this an appropriate programming environment? and regarding the vps, is it best practice to use ONE vps for all tasks listed up there? all suggestions and feedbacks are welcome!

  Thank you everyone who attended my ASP.NET Connections talks last week in Las Vegas. I’ve attached the slides and code for the three talks that I delivered:   Using jQuery to interact with the Server through Ajax – In this talk, I discuss the different ways to communicate information between browser and server using Ajax. I explain the difference between the different types of Ajax calls that you can make with jQuery. I also discuss the differences between the JavaScriptSerializer, the DataContractJsonSerializer, and the JSON.NET serializer.   ASP.NET Validation In-Depth – In this talk, I distinguish between View Model Validation and Domain Model Validation. I demonstrate how you can use the validation attributes (including the new .NET 4.5 validation attributes), the jQuery Validation library, and the HTML5 input validation attributes to perform View Model Validation. I then demonstrate how you can use the IValidatableObject interface with the Entity Framework to perform Domain Model Validation.   Using the MVVM Pattern with JavaScript Views – In this talk, I discuss how you can create single page applications (SPA) by taking advantage of the open-source KnockoutJS library and the ASP.NET Web API.   Be warned that the sample code is contained in Visual Studio 11 Beta projects. If you don’t have this version of Visual Studio, then you will need to open the code samples in Notepad. Also, I apologize for getting the code for these talks posted so slowly. I’ve been down with a nasty case of the flu for the past week and haven’t been able to get to a computer.

• Reset Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) File Permissions -- All Files

  Is their a script or process completely reset all file system file permissions to factory default? (Less restoring from a image backup or reinstalling the OS). This would include I've affected all files from / to Applications and home folder and all contents. (Everything) I've tried to use the Disk Utility's First Aid 'Repair Disk Permissions' but it didn't seem to touch or affect everything - some but not all. I've ran it twice so far... I've seen this but it's not quite the something. Fixing mac user file permissions, not the system The reason for all of this is I accidentally ran a chmod on all files (as sudo). Working too fast, now I'm in a hole.

• cmd.exe version comparison?

  When using batch files or console applications on Windows servers the window in question can allow text to be hightlighted (marked) for copying and pasting. Doing this pauses the batch/application and it will only resume after the copy operation. Or this is what I thought to be true. Recently on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 server I noted that whilst the scrolling was paused the operations were not. Does anyone know if my description in the 1st para is true for older windows is not true for Windows 2003 R2 SP2 when it changed a full version comparison table for cmd.exe across different OS' ? Thanks for reading (Windows 2000 tag as that was the OS I used most before 2003 R2)

• Webserver: chrooted PHP gives mysql.sock error when attempting to reach mysql

  Hey guys, I've configured an Ubuntu webserver with Nginx + PHP5-FPM. I've created a chrooted environment (using jailkit) that I'm tossing my developers into, from where they can develop their test applications. Chroot jail: /home/jail Nginx and PHP5-FPM run outside the chroot, but are configured to function with websites within the chrooted environment. So far, Nginx and PHP5-FPM are serving up files without issue, except for the following: When attempting to connect to MySQL, we receive this error: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' Now, I believe the issue is due to the non-chrooted php.ini referencing mysqld.sock outside of the chroot environment (it's actually using the MySQL default setting currently). My question is, how can I configure PHP to access MySQL via loopback or similar? (Found that as a suggestion in a google result, but without any instructions) Or if I'm missing some other obvious setting, let me know. If there's an option of creating a hardlink (that would remain available even if mysql is restarted), that would be handy as well.

• How to improve battery life on Samsung 13.3” Series 7 Ultra (NP730U3E-S01AU)?

  Recently I've bought a Series 7 Ultra Samsung ultrabook and decided to change the OS from originally installed Windows 8 to Ubuntu 14.04LTS. However, it's difficult not to notice great decrease in battery life: on pre-installed Windows 8 battery would last for about 6 hours while on Ubuntu it's almost empty after 2 hours of same kind of work (wi-fi, web, vlc, spotify, intellij idea). I'm not here to say that Ubuntu's battery performance is worse than Windows, but to ask for suggestions how to improve the situation (2 hours of work is pretty poor battery life). Can you recommend some sources, applications or tips/tricks that would improve battery life on my ultrabook? I really like the Ubuntu experience, but this makes my machine much less reliable. I suspect that graphic video card might be one of the issues here. • How to skip words in OS X terminal?

  Say I wrote a long command in the Mac OSX terminal, i.e say "Hello, how are you? I am good thank you. How is it going with you? Fine, thanks" and now I decided I want to change the word Hello to Hi. To do that, right now I have to keep pressing (or hold down) the left keyboard key until the "cursor" gets to the end of the word Hello, and then delete it. The usual 'holding down option' technique doesn't work as it does in most other OS X applications. Is there a way to skip a word at a time instead (or any other shorter way of getting the cursor there)? Thanks!

  Hello, I am migrating some applications from Apache 1.3 to 2.2. We used to run some tests where attacker opens some HTTP connection to our server, and do nothing. Apache 1.3 would log the following 408 code, for example: 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 But with Apache 2.2, nothing is logged to the log file. I run the same test by using netcat to open the connection: $ nc IP_victim PORT_victim $ nc 10.42.37.3 80 I would like to have Apache 2.2 log the same 408 code to the log file, so that we would know of attempted DoS attack from the outside. Do I need any more configuration in Apache 2 to enable this? I have tried some different configurations such as LogLevel = Debug, Timeout 30, RequestReadTimeout header=10 body=30. Thanks.

• Running IE on OSX with WineBottler: Can't find wine?

  So I want to run IE7 on OSX 10.6 with WineBottler. I saw it was possible to run IE on Mac with WineBottler, following these instructions. I installed WineBottler and IE7. All was looking good. However, when I tried to open IE7 from the Applications menu, I got an error message: "Can't find Wine. Wine is required to run this program." I then installed wine-devel from macports (which was a bit fiddly as I hit this problem and had to update a lot of dependencies, but it did eventually build). However, even after doing that, I'm still seeing the 'Can't find wine' error message whenever I try to open IE7 or WineBottler. Could anyone advise? Do I need to start wine running somehow?

• How to reset MacOsX while keeping BootCamp?

  I have MacOsX 10.8.2 installed on my MacBook Pro and Windows 8 licenced on a BootCamp partition. I have messed up my MacOsx partition (problems while programming, .h files not found, old applications removed that still appears) and I wanna start back from a clean OS. Is there a Way to reset my partition (or reinstall, obviously) keeping my BootCamp partition safe ? I know I could use my recovery partition but I do not know if it won't delete my Windows and it no longer appears in disk utility. As I found no answers in the Internet, does someone how how to do that ? Thanks in advance.
