• How to handle a player's level and its consequent privileges?

  I'm building a game similar to Mafia Wars where a player can do tasks for his gang and gain experience and thus advancing his level. The game is built using PHP and a Mysql database. In the game I want to limit the resources allowed to player based on his level. For example: ________| (Max gold) | (Max army size) | (Max moves) | ... Level 1 | 1000 | 100 | 10 | ... Level 2 | 1500 | 200 | 20 | ... Level 3 | 3000 | 300 | 25 | ... . . . In addition certain features of the game won't be allowed until a certain level is reached such as players under Level 10 can't trade in the game market, players under Level 20 can't create alliances,...etc. The way I have modeled it is by implementing a very loooong ACL (Access Control List) with about 100 entries (an entry for each level). However, I think there may be a simpler approach to this seeing that this feature have been implemented in many games before.

• Most efficient Way to setup a game server

  I'm running a PHP based game which has over 45 Million members predicted for end of this year (2011) Currently we are on 7.5 Million, this game is being ran on facebook and I am in desperate need to help get this game server as efficient and as powerful as possible. it is a dedicated server with Processor Manufacturer Intel Model i7 920 Frequency 4x 2x 2.66 GHz NIC GigaEthernet RAM 12 GB Hard disk 4 x 1 TB specs. It has apache installed, cPanel, phpMyAdmin, several apache mods and MySQL. The game also runs 47 mysql calls per second per user. Is there any alternatives to the above which could be faster, more efficient etc? I dont mind having to recode the game to fit to it, as long as it maximises our upper limit of members on the game. Thanks Also, is there a way to tell what our maximum limit to players, database calls etc is? Thank you again, hope you guys can help :)

• Getting .deb package dependencies for an offline Ubuntu computer through Windows

  Basically I want to "batch" download a .deb file and all its dependencies at once on a Windows 7 machine (of which I do not have admin access, it is a public computer.) I've seen plenty of Ubuntu based fixes that require terminal and apt, I'm asking how to do this on Windows. (I am not sure if this question fits here but I haven't found anywhere else that it could go.) I've tried Keryx and Sushi-huh to try to get packages and their dependencies but these both require Python, Python can't be normally installed without admin permission. (Side note, I think I've seen programs bundle python so they can work without installing it to c:, is this possible as a workaround? Google isn't helping) If anyone wants to know I'm trying to download Krita and Blender for Ubuntu 12.10/AMD64 I have been able to manually download single .deb files and dependencies upwards to 38 dependent packages, but then those 38 packages depend on other packages, It's maddening to not have some way to automatically do this on Windows. *Edit Sorry I forgot to make it clear that my personal home computer is running Ubuntu 12.10 and the public computer I'm using to download is Windows 7

• Building a plug-in for Windows Live Writer

  This tutorial will show you how to build a plug-in for Windows Live Writer. Windows Live Writer is a blogging tool that Microsoft provides for free. It includes an open API for .NET developers to create custom plug-ins. In this tutorial, I will show you how easy it is to build one. Open VS2008 or VS2010 and create a new project. Set the target framework to 2.0, Application Type to Class Library and give it a name. In this tutorial, we are going to create a plug-in that generates a twitter message with your blog post name and a TinyUrl link to the blog post.  It will do all of this automatically after you publish your post. Once, we have a new projected created. We need to setup the references. Add a reference to the WindowsLive.Writer.Api.dll located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\ folder, if you are using X64 version of Windows. You will also need to add a reference to System.Windows.Forms System.Web from the .NET tab as well. Once that is complete, add your “using” statements so that it looks like whats shown below: Live Writer Plug-In "Using" using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; using WindowsLive.Writer.Api; using System.Web; Now, we are going to setup some build events to make it easier to test our custom class. Go into the Properties of your project and select Build Events, click edit the Post-build and copy/paste the following line: XCOPY /D /Y /R "$(TargetPath)" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Writer\Plugins\" Your screen should look like the one pictured below: Next, we are going to launch an external program on debug. You should get a pop-up with the following: Hit OK and It should open a Twitter and either ask for a login or fill in your status as shown below:   That should do it, you can do so many other things with the API. I suggest that if you want to build something really useful consult the MSDN pages. This plug-in that I created was perfect for what I needed and I hope someone finds it useful.

  JAX-RS 2.0 has released Early Draft 3 and Jersey 2 (the implementation of JAX-RS 2.0) released Milestone 5. Jakub reported that this milestone is now integrated in GlassFish 4 builds. The first integration has basic functionality working and leaves EJB, CDI, and Validation for the coming months. TOTD #182 explains how to get started with creating a simple Maven-based application, deploying on GlassFish 4, and using the newly introduced Client API to test the REST endpoint. GlassFish 4 contains Jersey 2 as the JAX-RS implementation. If you want to use Jersey 1.1 functionality, then Martin's blog provide more details on that. All JAX-RS 1.x functionality will be supported using standard APIs anyway. This workaround is only required if Jersey 1.x functionality needs to be accessed. • How to setup certificate authentication for MS SQL server 2008 R2 ?

  Hello, I have to connect an (ADO) application running on a standalone Windows 2003 R2 server to a SQL 2008 R2 database that is a member of the domain. I have setup an SQL authentication account for this and hard-coded the password into the connection string but I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to use certificate-based authentication for this instead. I haven't been able to find any documentation regarding this apparently new functionality of SQL 2008 R2 anywhere. Could someone kindly point me at some good documentation ? Or at least a description of the functionality and whether it could be used in my case or not ? Thank you in advance

• make my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop visible on the network

  I'm ecstatically happy with my 12.04 on my laptop after loading it over my MS Vista... but there's just one thing, one little fly in the ointment.... While I can view our 2 Terabyte, shared hard-drive in the lounge (and copy files back and forth) I can't see my PC (when I boot up in Ubuntu 12.04) nor the Lubuntu computer connected to the TV (for movies, Youtube etc). Printing to the HP office jet on the PC doesnt work over the network either. Have had one dubious flirtation with Samba, which seems to be the only thing I've found that will 'work', however halfway through that "installation" everything just ground to a halt, the directions began to stop making sense... I was working from this page. Our Network consists of the following: Our Internet service is wirelessly sent to us from our provider to our dish on a pole. It comes into the house via an ethernet cable. We split it there to a phone, and to 6 other destinations (bedrooms, computers, and to another splitter in the lounge which has a wifi antennae and 4 ethernet ports). one port goes to the Lubuntu OS PC which is connected to the TV the second port goes to the 2 Terabyte harddrive (MS powered 'Mybooklive') (the other two are empty) My Ubuntu 12.04 laptop connects wirelessly to this splitter in the lounge. I know just enough about computers to get myself into an awful mess without too much trouble We usually can view friends' laptops when they get on our network (as they are invariably MS OS's) Our flatmate, who introduced us to Linux's computer is also invisible How can we make our Linux OS based computers visible on the network and share files and printing?

  Firstly: I know could do this the easy way with SSH but I want to learn how to route. I want to route packets back through the same tun0 interface from which they came into my system. I can do it for single routes. This works: sudo ip route add 74.52.23.120 metric 2 via 10.8.0.1 But i'd have to add them manually for each request that came down the pipe I've taken the blue pill and followed the http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.netfilter.html: Netfilter & iproute - marking packets tutorial But it's oriented towards redirecting OUTGOING packets based upon markers What I want is for a packet that comes in via tun0 not to be dropped which is what's happening right now, running scappy or suchlike to receive packets it doesn't seem to be receiving anything. Watching in wireshark I see the initial SYN packets coming in on the tun0 interface but that's as far as it gets without a static route as shown above. Am I nuts?

  I have several ExtraSmall-sized Azure VMs (PaaS / Cloud Service based) that are all experiencing drifting of the Windows clock. Research showed that this is quite common, especially in VMs with shared cores. Unfortunately even after configuring the w32time service to sync with time.windows.com and forcing a resync (w32tm /resync), there seems to be a time difference of 2 seconds to the configured NTP server. Though Microsoft states that w32tm is not meant as a high-precision sync tool, a difference of 2 seconds is (IMO) quite a lot for server-activities/processing. What does one have to do to get more accurate time sync?

• Discount Multilingual Day in the Life of User Experience

  Super article by the WikiMedia Foundation engineering folks about Designing for the Multilingual Web using the Wikipedia Universal Language Selector user interface as an example. Great ideas about tools that are available, as well as covering the basics of wireframing (mockups), prototyping, and user testing. Lots of inspiration there for developers and builders of apps who want to ensure their user experience (UX) really delivers for a global audience. Check out the use of the Firefox-based Pencil, how to translate your mockups, and how to perform remote user testing using Google+ Hangouts. Paul Giner demonstrates how to translate mockups. A little clunky and homespun in parts (I would prefer if tools such as Pencil or Balsamiq MockUps, and so on, could roundtrip directly from SVG to XLIFF for example, and Pencil doesn't work yet with the latest versions for Firefox) and I am not sure how it can really scales to enterprise-level use. However, the UX methodology is basically sound, and reinforces the importance of designing and testing in more that one language. The most powerful message for me is that you do not need special resources, training or expensive tools to deliver great-looking usable apps if you're a developer. Definitely worth considering if you're building apps out there in the community.

• Is "as long as it works" the norm?

  Hi, My last shop did not have a process. Agile essentially meant they did not have a plan at all about how to develop or manage their projects. It meant "hey, here's a ton of work. Go do it in two weeks. We're fast paced and agile." They released stuff that they knew had problems. They didn't care how things were written. There were no code reviews--despite there being several developers. They released software they knew to be buggy. At my previous job, people had the attitude as long as it works, it's fine. When I asked for a rewrite of some code I had written while we were essentially exploring the spec, they denied it. I wanted to rewrite the code because code was repeated in multiple places, there was no encapsulation and it took people a long time to make changes to it. So essentially, my impression is this: programming boils down to the following: Reading some book about the latest tool/technology Throwing code together based on this, avoiding writing any individual code because the company doesn't want to "maintain custom code" Showing it and moving on to the next thing, "as long as it works." I've always told myself that next job I'm going to get a better shop. It never happens. If this is it, then I feel stuck. The technologies always change; if the only professional development here is reading the latest MS Press technology book, then what have you built in 10 years but a superficial knowledge of various technologies? • The best way to structure/design game code

  My question is quite broad and related to the 2D game code design/architecture/structure. Usually the main game consists of the main loop where you update & render your world states. However, it's recommended for many purposes to separate rendering from the game-logic and so on. I am kinda confused about the whole situation. Many game engines/libs/sdks don't follow separation schema. They propagate a way where you define some scenes/stages and they contain some objects and the scene/stage controls the user input and so on. For example, in cocos2d(-x) and libgdx (stage2d) the games are usually done the way that the update logic happens at the same time/place as rendering. Also, the propagated way is to have a structure where an object knows how to draw itself - which is not a separation of updating & rendering. The same with Flash based games, they are usually done the way when an object (class) contains a swf or a texture and some data and holds some update logic itself, or updated from main Scene. And again this object already knows how to draw itself via "addChild". Also, some people recommend to use MVC pattern, which will require to completely obey the structure of those engines/libs/sdks. Maybe I am overthinking everything, but I am totally confused. I would be grateful if somebody could point me to a correct direction with the game code structures. What is your way of doing things in libgdx/cocos2d/flash?

• Current alternative to the old CHECKSUM program

  I'm looking for an application that does md5/sha hash check on specific files/folders periodically and store an index file per folder for future verification. I remember such application exist in DOS days, to detect files infected by virus. The main purpose for this is to detect corrupted copy of backup, as I understand that consumer grade hardware are not 100% error free when doing backup or file transfer from device to device. The hash can also be used to generate a list of changed files for backup. Most of the software I can find is hash manually. EDIT: Windows based application, preferably a shell extension which I can right click on a folder and do a checksum/verify all files in that folder. Even better if that can integrate with a backup/sync program like BeyondCopy

• Security Alert for CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887 Released

Oracle just released a Security Alert to announce the availability of fixes for two vulnerabilities (CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887) affecting Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. Both vulnerabilities only affect Java when running in a 32-bit web browser. These vulnerabilities are not present in Java running on servers or standalone Java desktop applications and do not impact any Oracle server based software. The first vulnerability (CVE-2010-0886) affects the Java Deployment Toolkit (version 6 update 10 through 19) on Windows only. The second vulnerability (CVE-2010-0887) affects the Java Plug-in (version 6 update 18 and 19) on Windows, Solaris and Linux. Both vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to run commands on the user's system with the privileges of the user, whose system may have become compromised by visiting a malicious web site. Oracle rated the severity of both vulnerabilities with a CVSS Base Score of 10.0 because many Windows users grant themselves administrative privileges. However, on other platforms, or for Windows users with limited privileges, the CVSS Base Score is only 7.5, because a successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities cannot result in a full compromise of the affected system. Users can quickly determine if they are running vulnerable versions of Java by pointing their browser to http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml.   I received this request in many courses, messages and also forum discussions: having an Analysis Services Tabular model, it would be nice being able to extract a correspondent PowerPivot data model. In order of priority, here are the specific feature people (including me) would like to see: Create an empty PowerPivot workbook with the same data model of a Tabular model Change the connections of the tables in the PowerPivot workbook extracting data from the Tabular data model Every table should have an EVALUATE ‘TableName’ query in DAX Apply a filter to data extracted from every table For example, you might want to extract all data for a single country or year or customer group Using the same technique of applying filter used for role based security would be nice Expose an API to automate the process of creating a PowerPivot workbook Use case: prepare one workbook for every employee containing only its data, that he can use offline Common request for salespeople who want a mini-BI tool to use in front of the customer/lead/supplier, regardless of a connection available This feature would increase the adoption of PowerPivot and Tabular (and, therefore, Business Intelligence licenses instead of Standard), and would probably raise the sales of Office 2013 / Office 365 driven by ISV, who are the companies who requests this feature more. • Can a Windows 2003 Active Directory server act as a NTP server?

  Within our LAN, there are two Windows 2003 servers with the Active Directory role. Both these servers have the time service configured to query NTP servers on the internet for the accurate time. That works fine. I've just installed XenServer v5.6 and it's asked me for the IP address of an NTP server. Without tweaking the firewall, I cannot configure this server to reference an internet based NTP server. But can I configure it to use the IP address of the internal AD servers, i.e. do AD servers also act as NTP servers to other computers? Thanks, Rob.

• SQL SERVER – SELECT INTO with FileGroup or Partitionis Not Possible

  The other day, I received an email from user and after a long time before I answer the question, I had to check the answer online. Here is the question - I want to create a new table based from old table, but when I execute following script it gives me an error. Is there anything I am missing in my syntax? SELECT *  INTO NewTableName ON MyFileGroup FROM MyOldTableName I faintly remember that this was not possible in earlier version of SQL Server but I was not sure if this feature was added in the recent versions or not. I quickly tried few syntaxes and referred online documentation and learned that it is still not possible in the latest version of SQL Server. The alternative is to just go ahead and change the default filegroup of any new table with following script. Though, I do not like change the default filegroup for new tables. It is possible that when I have changed the default filegroup some other code executes behind the scene by automated system or my colleague, it will be also created on new filegroup. ALTER DATABASE DatabaseName MODIFY FILEGROUP NameofFileGroup DEFAULT The reason this feature is not supported is that SELCT INTO is minimally logged operation. I seriously hope that some day in the future this feature get added in.
