• Implementing separation of concerns via MVC

  I'm creating a question to see if my understanding of MVC separation is correct, I haven't been able to find a clear answer anywhere online. So is this the right way to implement it (in Java): I would have 3 .java files, one each for Model, Controller, View. I would put all the classes related to Model in the Model.java like so: //Model.java { public class Model //class fields public Model(); public ModelClassA(); public ModelClassB(); public ModelClassC(); } With the ModelClasses being any class that I consider belonging to the Model. Is it correct to have the classes within the Model Class, as I have read that nested classes should be avoided where possible.

• PHPPgAdmin not working in Ubuntu 14.04

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04, I've installed postgresql and phppgadmin from the Ubuntu repos. I am using the Apache2 webserver. PHP is working fine in the webserver, as is PHPMyAdmin, but PHPPgAdmin is not working. When I try to access it at localhost/phppgadmin, I get a 404 message. I've tried creating a symlink in /var/www to the phppgadmin content, but that doesn't seem to work. How do I fix this? EDIT: note that I am using a local proxy server (squid) through which I funnel all my online traffic. While this may be part of the problem, I would be surprised if it was, because I am still on the same machine as phppgadmin and the requests logged in the apache access log indicate that incoming requests for the page are coming from the local machine (which is allowed in the policies for phppgadmin, if I understand things correctly).

Let it be fps, latency, load time, physics step calc. time, whatever... I also want tools to perform data analysis: per session stats, per hardware stats, avgs, totals, diagrams, etc. So that I could see what are the real world hotspots / bottlenecks. Is there any common out-of-the-box / SaS solution?

  I have no internet on Ubuntu 12.04.1 so i'm on a desktop so I got to install a .exe program to run my wireless card for my desktop so I got internet access, But I can't seem to download wine or its source files. If I do I put on my usb and boot into Ubuntu but then when I try to open it I get the programs source files etc. Anyone who could help me Please do :| ( I can't install wine from software center since I have no connection online). Note : I can download my stuff on windows 8 boot so I can transfer files to my usb to run on Ubuntu.

• Star Trail Photos Taken from the International Space Station

  While most people have seen a star trail photo or two, seeing a set of star trail photos taken from over 300 miles above the Earth’s surface is a treat. Courtesy of Astronaut and Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit, the photos capture star trails from the vantage point of the International Space Station. He explains his technique: My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure. • Diabetic trying to use Ubuntu with Medtronic Carelink insulin pump support USB device

  I am taking a wild shot here: I am a type 1 diabetic who is going on the Insulin pump. Unfortunately, the Medtronic Carelink USB device that uploads data from the pump online only has windows drivers. Has anybody managed to get this working under Ubuntu using Wine or by any other method: lsusb yields: Bus 001 Device 014: ID 0a21:8001 Medtronic Physio Control Corp. MMT-7305WW [Medtronic Minimed CareLink] I really don't want to buy a windows machine just for this, but it's probably one in a million that somebody else has managed to make this work under Linux.

• What options do I have for game hosting.

  DISCLAIMER: I know this question starts to leave development island but it is very game development related and still think this is the best place. I see many free MMOs/online desktop client games out there. I am baffled at the ability to fund such. I don't mind hosting myself but would at least like to have someone host a matchmaking service. If these indie devs really are pouring money down the server drain then I'm screwed but if some one can "learn me" :) some alternatives I would greatly appreciate it.

• Personal Technology – Laptop Screen Blank – No Post – No BIOS – No Boot

  If your laptop Screen is Blank and there is no POST, BIOS or boot, you can follow the steps mentioned here and there are chances that it will work if there is no hardware failure inside. Step 1: Remove the power cord from the laptop Step 2: Remove the battery from the laptop Step 3: Hold power button (keep it pressed) for almost 60 seconds Step 4: Plug power back in laptop Step 5: Start computer and it should just start normally. Step 6: Now shut down Step 7: Insert the battery back in the laptop Step 8: Start laptop again and it should work Note 1: If your laptop does not work after inserting back the memory. Remove the memory and repeat above process. Do not insert the battery back as it is malfunctioning. Note 2: If your screen is faulty or have issues with your hardware (motherboard, screen or anything else) this method will not fix your computer. Those, who care about how I come up with this not SQL related blog post, here is the very funny true story. If you are a married man, you will know what I am going to describe next. May be you have faced the same situation or at least you feel and understand my situation. My wife’s computer suddenly stops working when she was searching for my daughter’s mathematics worksheets online. While the fatal accident happened with my wife’s computer (which was my loyal computer for over 4 years before she got it), I was working in my home office, fixing a high priority issue (live order’s database was corrupted) with one of the largest eCommerce websites.  While I was working on production server where I was fixing database corruption, my wife ran to my home office. Here is how the conversation went: Wife: This computer does not work. I: Restart it. Wife: It does not start. I: What did you do with it? Wife: Nothing, it just stopped working. I: Okey, I will look into it later, working on the very urgent issue. Wife: I was printing my daughter’s worksheet. I: Hm.. Okey. Wife: It was the mathematics worksheet, which you promised you will teach but you never get around to do it, so I am doing it myself. I: Thanks. I appreciate it. I am very busy with this issue as million dollar transaction are not happening as the database got corrupted and … Wife: So what … umm… You mean to say that you care about this customer more than your daughter. You know she got A+ in every other class but in mathematics she got only A. She missed that extra credit question. I: She is only 4, it is okay. Wife: She is 4.5 years old not 4. So you are not going to fix this computer which does not start at all. I think our daughter next time will even get lower grades as her dad is busy fixing something. I: Alright, I give up bring me that computer. Our daughter who was listening everything so far she finally decided to speak up. Daughter: Dad, it is a laptop not computer. I: Yes, sweety get that laptop here and your dad is going to fix the this small issue of million dollar issue later on. I decided to pay attention to my wife’s computer. She was right. No matter what I do, it will not boot up, it will not start, no BIOS, no POST screen. The computer starts for a second but nothing comes up on the screen. The light indicating hard drive comes up for a second and goes off. Nothing happens. I removed every single USB drive from the laptop but it still would not start. It was indeed no fun for me. Finally I remember my days when I was not married and used to study in University of Southern California, Los Angeles. I remembered that I used to have very old second (or maybe third or fourth) hand computer with me. In polite words, I had pre-owned computer and it used to face very similar issues again and again. I had small routine I used to follow to fix my old computer and I had decided to follow the same steps again with this computer. Step 1: Remove the power cord from the laptop Step 2: Remove the battery from the laptop Step 3: Hold power button (keep it pressed) for almost 60 seconds Step 4: Plug power back in laptop Step 5: Start computer and it should just start normally. Step 6: Now shut down Step 7: Insert the battery back in the laptop Step 8: Start laptop again and it should work Note 1: If your laptop does not work after inserting back the memory. Note 2: If your screen is faulty or have issues with your hardware (motherboard, screen or anything else) this method will not fix your computer. Once I followed above process, her computer worked. I was very delighted, that now I can go back to solving the problem where millions of transactions were waiting as I was fixing corrupted database and it the current state of the database was in emergency mode. Once I fixed the computer, I looked at my wife and asked. I: Well, now this laptop is back online, can I get guaranteed that she will get A+ in mathematics in this week’s quiz? Wife: Sure, I promise. I: Fantastic. After saying that I started to look at my database corruption and my wife interrupted me again. Wife: Btw, I forgot to tell you. Our daughter had got A in mathematics last week but she had another quiz today and she already have received A+ there. I kept my promise. I looked at her and she started to walk outside room, before I say anything my phone rang. DBA from eCommerce company had called me, as he was wondering why there is no activity from my side in last 10 minutes. DBA: Hey bud, are you still connected. I see um… no activity in last 10 minutes. I: Oh, well, I was just saving the world. I am back now. After two hours I had fixed the database corruption and everything was normal. I was outsmarted by my wife but honestly I still respect and love her the same as she is the one who spends countless hours with our daughter so she does not miss me and I can continue writing blogs and keep on doing technology evangelism. • Obtaining In game Warcraft III data to program standalone AI

  I am implementing common purpose behavioral algorithm and would like to test it under my lovely Warcraft III game and watch how it will fight against real players. The problem is how to obtain information about in game state (units, structures, environment, etc. ). Algorithm needs access to hard drive and possibly distributed computing, that's why JASS (WC3 Editor language) usage doesn't solve the issue. Direct 3D hooking is an approach, but it wasn't done for WC3 yet and significant drawback is inability to watch online at how AI performs since it uses the viewport to issue commands. How in game data can be obtained to a different process in a fastest and easiest way? Thank you.

• Worthwhile to upgrade my Ruby Pickaxe book?

  I have Programming Ruby, The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide, Second Edition which covers Ruby 1.8. It has been several years since I have programmed in Ruby, but I'd like to refresh my memory and bring my knowledge current. With most programming languages, I've found that I can skip books that only concern a single version bump. Yet, Ruby is a young language and I understand there may have been significant changes in 1.9. Although I already have the second edition, is it worthwhile to buy the third edition for Ruby 1.9? Are the differences that vast, or will it be simple enough to catch up to 1.9 with the online docs?

• RAM Cache always full

  I have 6GB RAM, i5 2.4GHZ Processor running Ubuntu 11.10. When streaming online or opening several tabs in Chromium I soon have 4GB Memory in the cache. And this makes my Notebook slow. When streaming a video, after a few minutes it really slows down and stumbles/jerks. I partitioned my HD so that I have 8GB swap. What could the problem be? How can I solve this? P.s: initially I had 4gb and recently upgraded to 6GB, but I did not experience a significant change. P.P.S: if I enter "free -g" in the terminal this is the result: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 5 2 3 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 1 4 Swap: 8 0 8

• Books and stories on programming culture, specifically in the 80's / early 90's

  I've enjoyed a number of (fiction/non-fiction books) about hacker culture and running a software business in the 80's, 90's. For some reason things seemed so much more exciting back then. Examples are: Microserfs (Douglas Coupland) Accidental Empires (Robert X. Cringely Almost Pefect (W.E. Peterson, online!) Coders at Work (Peter Seibel) Today I'm an entrepeneur and programmer. Back in the 80's a I was a young geek hacking DOS TSR's and coding GWBasic / QBasic. In the 90's I was a C.S. university student, experiencing the rise of the Internet world wide. When reading these books running a software business seemed so much more fun than it is nowadays. Things used to be so much simpler, opportunities seemed to be everywhere and the startups seemed to work with much more real problems (inventing spreadsheets, writing word processors in assembly on 6 different platforms) than all our current web 2.0 social networking toys. Does anyone share these feelings? Does anyone have any good (personal) stories from back then or know of other good books to read?

• Copy machine security issues.

  I am involved on a project to talk to communities about the risks of posting online content is social networks. But this time I was really impressed how far security concerns can go. This video from CBS news talks about security risks related to corporate fax/printers and scanners. It was very clear that when they got the machines they selected the machines by previous owner and they were not random machines, but still, I will never scan from my company machine again. • Java 7 Adoption at 79%

  According to a recent blog post from the cloud hosting company Jelastic, Java 7 adoption on their platform is now at 79%. While this is a single data point and should not be read too broadly, it does match other indicators we have that Java 7 is picking up, such as uptake among Oracle middleware customers, download statistics and online activity. The spike in adoption in April coincided with the release of JDK 7 Update 4. This is in line with our expectations since that release added Mac OS X support as well as java.com moving to Java 7 as the default download for end-users; two events that marked the maturity of Java 7 to the community. Since the original release of Java 7, Oracle has shipped 7 update releases, added ports to Mac OSX and Linux/ARM and expanded JavaFX to all common desktop platforms.
