• Do I own copyright of program I made in own time?

  I created a software package that aids electrical engineers with common calculations used on site (substations to be specific). I created the package in my own time, without being asked and without guidance. The package is now widely used within my company and I intend to distribute it nationally. Do I own the copyright? My contract does state that all work produced is theirs, but this was outside of work and outside of my 'scope of work'. My company is mainly a civil and construction company and had no influence in the creation of the program. From comments: This is the paragraph "During the course of your service, you will disclose to the company all information, formulae, processes, inventions or improvements which you have learned, discovered or evolved during the course of your service or in connection with the business of the company and will sign any necessary documents to enable the company to obtain patent protection whether still in the company service or not. " They are taking it seriously and have got their lawyers.

  I am trying to follow a very important standard that I must admit I have ignored up until recently. I want to make sure that my pages are accessible to a large portion of people that have disabilities. I focus mainly on tutorials that are text and image intensive, but no video / flash or any kind of animations. What is a checklist that I can follow to ensure that many people with disabilities can have a good experience when using my web site, and what disabilities should I be most conscious of? I know that I can't possibly please everyone. I have gone through the W3C guidelines, however I'm not entirely sure what standards apply to me. I'm not building web applications, I'm building mostly wiki like information exchanges, blogs and the occasional forum.

  This is the obligatory first posting in which I describe to you my plans for this blog and why you should read it. My plan is very simple – to share with you (and possibly myself along the way) relevant information about tools and techniques that you can use (or perhaps shouldn’t use) to solve problems with code. Most of my employers have paid me to develop solutions using Microsoft tools and technologies, so you will see them heavily represented here. I also plan to avoid having this blog function simply as a link aggregator, so I promise that it will be rare for you to find entries in my blog consisting solely of a link to someone else’s blog or a webcast – if I do have such links they will at least be accompanied by commentary. This is my first venture into the world of blogging, so please let me know how I'm doing (be nice) and feel free to suggest/request topics for future entries.

• Returning status code where one of many errors could have occured

  I'm developing a PHP login component which includes functions to manipulate the User object, such as $User->changePassword(string $old, string $new) What I need some advice with is how to return a status, as the function can either succeed (no further information needs to be given) or fail (and the calling code needs to know why, for example incorrect password, database problem etc.) I've come up with the following ideas: Unix-style: return 0 on success, another code on failure. This doesn't seem particularly common in PHP and the language's type-coercion messes with this (a function returning FALSE on success?) This seems to be the best I can think of. Throw an exception on error. PHP's exception support is limited, and this will make life harder for anybody trying to use the functions. Return an array, containing a boolean for "success" or not, and a string or an int for "failure status" if applicable. None of these seem particularly appealing, does anyone have any advice or better ideas?

• W520 External monitor setup with Ubuntu 12.10

  I just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 64-Bit Desktop on my Lenovo W520. It looks like there are a lot of challenges around making it work with out of the box Nouveau drivers or propriety Nvidia drivers or Intel GPU. I looked at couple of notes on how to make it work with Bumblebee with Optimus Nvidia. None of them seems to work for 12.10. Anybody has a solid answer on this? It seems like a lot of people are suffering from this. Here is my xrandr output. Let me know if you need any additional information.   Hey all I'm just trying to add another quad to my frustum and when doing so I get this weird little error. What happens is the bottom left side of my quad seems to stick to the center point for no apparent reason that I can think of and or figure out from. has anyone else experienced this issue and knows a solution or would you like more information please do ask. here is my main.cpp file http://pastebin.com/g9q8uAsd I think its because of 2 different quad vertex array data is in the same array.

  Edit: I am not asking how to program embedded systems. I am asking how it is done in a practical business setting. I have searched for hours for information on what software developers actually do. More specifically, what coding challenges would one experience daily (e.g. code examples (although obviously not too large), specifics)? I am interested in Linux based embedded systems mainly, but any software development would be helpful (in the C/C++/Assembly areas). Also, regarding this, a distinction between junior, intermediate and senior developers would be helpful. Also, what is the best place to prepare for such things before getting a job for the first time?

• Problems with Ranking when Using Sourcing Rules And ASLs From Blanket Agreements?

  Are you using Sourcing Rules and Approved Supplier List with Blanket Purchase Agreements (BPA) and it seems like Ranking is not working correctly? For example:  The Sourcing Rule being used, has effective dates from 01-APR to 31-MAR for 2013, 2014 and 2015. One BPA is defined for Supplier A, which was originally set to Rank 1 with 100% allocation. A new BPA was created for the same item and with same effective dates as the current BPA. The BPA is for a different Supplier. When Generate Sourcing Rules is run it adds the new BPA/Supplier to the Sourcing rule, but its added as Rank 1, with the old rule changed to Rank 2. • Java and Eclipse setup properly, how do I install JOGL or LWJGL?

  I have my Java environment installed alongside Eclipse, and I was successfully able to create and run a new project (simple System.out.println("Yay I work!"); I have the OpenGL SuperBible, and I primarily want to code 3D things (I'll take my time using the book to learn how to draw shapes in 3D space, etc..) Can you help me get setup with OpenGL in Java? I dont really need LWJGL, although I WILL make games eventually. I just can't even figure out with all of these terrible (and old) tutorials floating around on the net how to install either JOGL or LWJGL. If you can give me a hand with that, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to feel I contributed by having this page show the answer to the question, so that other poor souls googling for this same information can benefit.

• Given a used laptop with Ubuntu installed, how do I get past the password demands?

  Recently given a laptop with Ubuntu 12.1 installed alongside Windows 7. Can only access Ubuntu, which is fine for everyday use (LibreOffice, Firefox, etc.) but there's an authentication password required to install the 500+ updates, and when trying to run anything in terminal, it asks for "quiz's" password. It won't allow me to go into root mode to bypass the password (if that's even a real thing?). I'm completely new to Linux, but am fascinated at the capabilities and would like to mess around some more, but keep getting stopped by these passwords. What do I have to do? Uninstall and re-install? How does one do that if I don't even have access to the Windows 7 OS because it is password protected as well? Thanks in advance for any information and help.

I m 37 ill be 39 when finished. I enjoy coding HTML so far and networking and windows admin. Are people my age finding jobs right away after school or should i just keeping going to the state university in the CS degree? I kinda want to work. Problem Description: When I reboot, there's an information: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: -- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) -- Check rootdisplay = (did the system wait long enough?) -- Check root = (did the system wait for the right device?) -- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/9cf6f563-86d1-47be-bc26-92dd7df35cb3 does not exist.   The task is to configure a piece of hardware within the device, according to some input specification. This should be achieved as follows: 1) Collect the configuration information. This can happen at different times and places. For example, module A and module B can both request (at different times) some resources from my module. Those 'resources' are actually what the configuration is. 2) After it is clear that no more requests are going to be realized, a startup command, giving a summary of the requested resources, needs to be sent to the hardware. 3) Only after that, can (and must) detailed configuration of said resources be done. 4) Also, only after 2), can (and must) routing of selected resources to the declared callers be done. A common cause for bugs, even for me, who wrote the thing, is mistaking this order. What naming conventions, designs or mechanisms can I employ to make the interface usable by someone who sees the code for the first time?

• Wifi connection problems

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a HP Pavilion DV2750ea. The wifi card is an Intel 4965AGN. When I first started using Ubuntu on this laptop it connected wirelessly to the network. Then it suddenly stopped. The Wifi card power light is off and all information says the card is disabled. When the laptop is powered on the wifi power light turns on and stays on until Ubuntu finishes loading. I have replaced the wifi card and the wifi switch module with no change. Please can you help.

  When I am writing up stored procedures in SSMS sometimes I need to know what column types are used in a table. For instance I will know the table name but I might not remember exactly the length of a varchar column or if a column stored the data as an integer or varchar. And I may not want to scroll through all the tables in Object Explorer to find the one I want. A lot of times it is easier if I can just write a quick query to pull up the information I need. The syntax to do something like this is pretty easy. SELECT COLUMN_NAME, DATA_TYPE, CHARACTER_MAXIMUM_LENGTH FROM yourdbname.information_schema.columns WHERE TABLE_NAME = ‘yourtablename’ After running that you will get a listing in the Results pane just like any other query with the column name, data type and length (if any).
