  • Are there some newer books to read beside these?

    - by Gandalf StormCrow
I've come accross these websites who recommend certain books but they are pretty much old : http://www.joelonsoftware.com/navLinks/fog0000000262.html http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2004/02/recommended-reading-for-developers.html http://sites.google.com/site/steveyegge2/ten-great-books Are there books in recent years which every developer should read?I'm mostly interested about Java/Spring/Hibernate/Jboss although reading book about programming in general wouldn't be bad.

  • How to dispatch a new property value in an object to the same property of two other objects

    - by WPFadvocate
In WPF, I've three objects exposing the same DependencyProperty (let's say it's an integer). I want all three property values to remain synchronized, i.e. that whenever the int value changes in an object, this value is propagated to the two other objects. I think of multibinding to do the job, but I don't know how to detect which object changed, thus which value should be used and propagated to the other objects. Edited: here is my tentative code for multibinding, with the false hope that it would work without additional code: // create the multibinding MultiBinding mb = new MultiBinding() { Mode = BindingMode.TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger = UpdateSourceTrigger.PropertyChanged }; // create individual bindings to associate object_2 and object_3 to object_1 Binding b2 = new Binding() { Source = object_2, Path = new PropertyPath("X") }; Binding b3 = new Binding() { Source = object_3, Path = new PropertyPath("X") }; // add individual bindings to multibinding mb.Bindings.Add(b2); mb.Bindings.Add(b3); // bind object_2 and _3 to object_1 BindingOperations.SetBinding(object_1, TypeObject_1.XProperty, mb); But actually, there is a runtime error, saying the binding set by the last instruction is lacking a converter. But again I don't know how to write this converter (there is nothing to convert (as this is the case in the related MS sample of code linking 3 rgb properties to a color property), only to forward the value of the property changed to the two other properties). I understand I could solve the problem by creating an X_Changed event in the 3 types and then have each object registering to the two other objects event. I don't like this "manual" way and would prefer to bind the 3 properties together.

  • Rendering PDF on WebPage

    - by Priyank
Hi. We are trying to load a pdf file in web browser using pdfobject javascript api. Currently the size of the pdf's that we are trying to display is close to 10MBs. This creates a long delay in displaying a PDF on web page; while the complete PDF gets downloaded. We need to remove this lag by achieving either of the alternatives: Show a progress bar until the PDF is actually displayed. We couldn't find an event which is triggered and can be used to find out if pdf is visible now. This lacking doesn't let us decide when to stop showing progress bar/spinner OR lazy load the PDF such that it gets displayed as soon as first page gets loaded. With that ateast user will have a visual indication as to something is happening. We couldn'find anything in pdf object that lets us do a lazy load. User alternative pdf rendering api; this is a low priority as we already have complete code in place; but in an event of first 2 alternatives not being met; we'd have to consider this option. So please feel free to suggest. Any other ideas as to how user interaction can be made more intuitive or pleasant; would be welcome. Cheers

  • Google and Mirror Websites

    - by Roberto Aloi
Which is the best way to manage a website with one or more mirrors so that: Google don't consider it as "dupicated content" The website is correctly indexed No inconsistencies or duplicated information are present in Google Analytics The Google webmaster guidelines in general are respected NOTE: I'm not sure if I should ask this question here or in ServerFault. It looks a bit in the middle between programming and server administration. Let me know if you think ServerFault represent a more appropriate place for this and I'll move it. Thanks.

  • How do I access variable values from one view controller in another?

    - by Thomas
Hello all, I have an integer variable (time) in one view controller whose value I need in another view controller. Here's the code: MediaMeterViewController // TRP - On Touch Down event, start the timer -(IBAction) startTimer { time = 0; // TRP - Start a timer timer = [NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:1 target:self selector:@selector(updateTimer) userInfo:nil repeats:YES]; [timer retain]; // TRP - Retain timer so it is not accidentally deallocated } // TRP - Method to update the timer display -(void)updateTimer { time++; // NSLog(@"Seconds: %i ", time); if (NUM_SECONDS == time) [timer invalidate]; } // TRP - On Touch Up Inside event, stop the timer, decide stress level, display results -(IBAction) btn_MediaMeterResults { [timer invalidate]; NSLog(@"Seconds: %i ", time); ResultsViewController *resultsView = [[ResultsViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ResultsViewController" bundle:nil]; [self.view addSubview:resultsView.view]; } And in ResultsViewController, I want to process time based on its value ResultsViewController - (void)viewDidLoad { if(time < 3) {// Do something} else if ((time > 3) && (time < 6)) {// Do something else} //etc... [super viewDidLoad]; } I'm kind of unclear on when @property and @synthesize is necessary. Is that the case in this situation? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Thomas

  • OOP vs PP for algorithms

    - by Ilian
Which paradigm is better for design and analysis of algorithms? Which is faster? Because I have a subject called Design and Analysis of Algorithms in university and have a time limit for programs. Is OOP slower than Procedure programming? Or the time difference is not big?

  • Gathering Staff anyone interested?

    - by kasene
Thread Title - Gathering Staff Rush-Soft Game Design is currently looking for staff of a moderate skill level. Team Name - RushSoft Game Design Project Name - N/A We are gathering staff so that we can begin working on a new game. Target Aim - Freeware / Free Version - Paid Version With our first project our aim is to simply get our name out there. Generally we will be targeting a freeware distribution platform or a Free and Paid version. Compensation - Prehaps in the future but don't rely on it If in the future we start developing a game we intend to make any sort of sizable profit from then yes, there will be compensation however currently our low, low funding comes from generous donations. Any money that we make for now will go to the teams funding for things like engine licenses and company registration. Technology - C/C++ RSETech Our primary functional language will be C/C++ as most games are. We will be using a custom built library built on Direct3D called RSETech or RushSoft Engine Technology. Currently its is fully capable of being used for developing a game. The final version is made up of almost entirely C (No C++ or OOP). There is a C++ version currently in the works. Programming: - Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 / 2010 2D Art - Photoshop CS2 - GIMP Talent Needed - We currently are in need of x2 Programmers - With understanding of the following C/C ++ and game programming aspects: -If/Else Conditions -Functions/Methods -Arrays -Pointers (You don't need to fully understand these. Just know when they need to be used.) -Enums -Loops (For and While) -Structs (and How to use . and - syntax) -Classes (and how to call methods and access variables from a class) -State Machines -Switches -Include Guards -Understanding of how game loops work in general. (Init, Update, Render, Deinit) x2 Artists - As long as you have the means to and are able to draw 2D sprites and collab with a game designer to get a good result. 1 or more Game Designers - You can design levels (for platformers) as well as write game scripts and you can come up with good ideas and game mechanics. As long as you can do these things and are able to work well with artists and programmers you're golden. Business Consultant - Someone who knows the industry and how it works. Will inquire about possible distribution platforms as well as contact other developers, websites, and publishers on RushSofts behalf. • Async file uploads in Firefox reset on any DOM change

    - by Vibhu
I'm pretty sure this is a Firefox or flash-related bug, but I just want to check if anyone has ran into this problem or knows how to fix it. Basically, we have a multi-file upload widget for our highly dynamic web app (think Gmail). We've tried both uploadify for jQuery, and YUI uploader. We've also tried taking those out of our app interface and putting them in an iFrame. What happens is that in the event of any DOM manipulation, even if the uploader is in an iFrame, be it a tab change (in our web app) that covers the iframe temporarily, or a block, etc., the uploader will stop its current upload. In the case of YUI uploader, it fires the "contentReady" event again. This ONLY happens in Firefox. IE and Chrome are fine. In case you are wondering, we really don't have any custom needs here. Just need to have multi-upload file support, and we need to give people free reign to tab around in our interface while an upload is in progress. It seems like Yahoo! and Gmail have both solved this problem. How? What are we doing wrong?

  • Am I "wasting" my time learning C and other low level stuff ?

    - by Andreas Grech
I have just recently started learning C and the reason I did that was because frankly, I consider myself to be of a "less-developer" than the people who know and work with C. Thus I planned to start learning ASM, C, C++ and bought the K&R book and started pushing myself to learn the C Programming Language and up till now I'm doing great...learning about arrays the low level way (ie the pointer + offset thing), pointers and all that and obviously asking questions on stackoverflow for guidance. My problem is that sometimes I get thinking if instead of learning this low level stuff, maybe I should maybe spend more time learning newer, more widely used technologies...basically, more web stuff. Now I am well versed with both C# and ASP.Net and currently that's what I do for a living, but still there exists Microsoft technologies that I haven't quite touched upon...such as ASP.Net MVC, The Entity Framework etc... And those are only Microsoft Technologies...obviously there are other stuff that I would like to touch upon...stuff like Ruby, which would lead me to Ruby on Rails, or Python for Django or even Java and J2EE, or maybe even PHP; ie, basically mainly Web Stuff. Mind you, I did touch upon some of the stuff I mentioned earlier on, such as PHP and Java but I am still not quite versed in them as I am in C# and ASP.Net...but still, I think that by learning other languages that are used in the web environment will broaden my horizons...both as a developer who loves learning, and also Career wise. My point is, am I really using up my time correctly by learning older, lower level stuff? Stuff that for my current line of work, will most probably never use, but still is interesting to know ? To be frankly honest, I am also learning C so that I could, maybe someday, get into Electronics and Micro-controller programming but that is a whole new world for me and, if I choose to go there, will take some time to get adjusted to. And even then, I don't know if I can get a career in working in that line of work. ...but I still wonder about this question over and over...Am I doing the right thing by learning C instead of something (Web-stuff) that will most probably be more useful for me career-wise? I'm sorry for such asking such a long and most probably a boring question, but I feel as if this is the only place where I can ask such a question and get an honest answer from experts in the field. Thank you for your time.

  • Connecting repeatable and non-repeatble backgrounds without a seam

    - by Stiggler
I have a 700x300 background repeating seamlessly inside of the main content-div. Now I'd like to attach a div at the bottom of the content-div, containing a different background image that isn't repeatable, connecting seamlessly with the repeatable background above it. Essentially, the non-repeatable image will look like the end piece of the repeatable image. Due to the nature of the pattern, unless the full 300px height of the background image is visible in the last repeat of the content-div's backround, the background in the div below won't seamlessly connect. Basically, I need the content div's height to be a multiple of 300px under all circumstances. What's a good approach to this sort of problem? I've tried resizing the content-div on loading the page, but this only works as long as the content div doesn't contain any resizing, dynamic content, which is not my case: function adjustContentHeight() { // Setting content div's height to nearest upper multiple of column backgrounds height, // forcing it not to be cut-off when repeated. var contentBgHeight = 300; var contentHeight = $("#content").height(); var adjustedHeight = Math.ceil(contentHeight / contentBgHeight); $("#content").height(adjustedHeight * contentBgHeight); } $(document).ready(adjustContentHeight); What I'm looking for there is a way to respond to a div resizing event, but there doesn't seem to be such a thing. Also, please assume I have no access to the JS controlling the resizing of content in the content-div, though this is potentially a way of solving the problem. Another potential solution I was thinking off was to offset the background image in the bottom div by a certain amount depending on the height of the content-div. Again, the missing piece seems to be the ability to respond to a resize event.

  • Conditional or in C#

    - by vikitor
Hello, I've been programming in JAVA and C all my years at Uni, but now I'm learning C# and building a small application, and I've found troubles with this: if (taxonType.Equals(null) ¦¦ taxonID == -1) I get a red underline for this conditional, and I don't really know why, because according to what I've seen that should be ok, but it is not. Is there something I'm missing? thank you all in advance, Victor

  • How can I control the action of onbeforeunload in IE?

    - by SpawnCxy
Hi all I've got a problem about onbeforeunload recently that I need to pop up a voting page if the user try closes their IE browser. And I did it by using <body onbeforeunload="makevote()"> And the main structure of makevote() in javascript as follows: function makevote() { comet.distruct(); if(csid != null && isvote == null) { window.event.returnValue = false window.event.returnValue='press “cancel” to vote please!' showComDiv(popvote,"popiframe",400,120,'your vote here','dovote()'); } } For last three months this voting function performed so ugly that I got only less than 8,000 votes from more than 4,50,000 vistors.I think the problem is, when the users try to close their browsers, the onbeforeunload property pops up a comfirm box which covered my voting box while most users click the OK button, which means close comfirming is done,as a habit. So my question is how can I control the comfirming box made by onbeforeunload myself? So far I can only define the message it shows. For example if I click the "OK" ,I'll go to the voting box instead of closing my IE.And if there's any other better way to do this?Help would be greatly appreciated! Regards
