  I have very little idea about mobile platform, though I am interested to program for mobile platform. Would you please compare between J2ME VS Android VS iPhone VS Symbian VS Windows CE. I would like to know which one is better, and if there is any VM technology to test the programs. Which one should I choose and why? Is there any IDE, debugging facilities? Personally I would like to code for open source, but any suggestion are welcome. I have preliminary knowledge on java. I would also like to know, if there is anything else that you can recommended. • How to do this GQL query in JDO

  I have about 50k entities stored in appengine. I am able to look up an individual record via the GQL admin interface with a query like: SELECT * FROM Pet where __key__ = KEY( 'Pet','Fido') But I'm having trouble figuring out how to do a batch version of this via JDO. Right now I have this: PersistenceManager pm = ...; for(Pet pet : pets) { for(String k : getAllAliases(pet)) { keys.add(KeyFactory.createKeyString(Pet.class.getSimpleName(), k)); } } Query q = pm.newQuery("select from " + Pet.class.getName() + " where id == :keys"); List<Pet> petlist = (List<Pet>) q.execute(keys); But though 'Fido' works in the GQL case, it returns nothing when I use that Java + JDO code. What am I doing wrong?

  I'm attempting to implement a Patricia Trie with the methods addWord(), isWord(), and isPrefix() as a means to store a large dictionary of words for quick retrieval (including prefix search). I've read up on the concepts but they just aren't clarifying into an implementation. I want to know (in Java or Python code) how to implement the Trie, particularly the nodes (or should I implement it recursively). I saw one person who implemented it with an array of 26 child nodes set to null/None. Is there a better strategy (such as treating the letters as bits) and how would you implement it?

  I am using java port of fpdf. I am encountering fowwlowing errors. 1).When i call multicell 2 times every time the text is printed on a new line. MultiCell(0, 1, "abcd", currentBorders, Alignment.LEFT, false); //prints on one line MultiCell(0, 1, "efg", currentBorders, Alignment.LEFT, false); //prints on next line I want that there is no line break after the call to multicell. How can i do it? 2)If i do the following thing then some part of my string gets printed on one line and some on next. MultiCell(getStringWidth(myString), 1, myStringcurrentBorders, Alignment.LEFT, false); 3)If i do the following thing then there are many blank lines after the line on which myString is printed. • Android compatibility with Restlet/JSON/Jackson

  Hi there, I'm currently working on a webservice-client for Android. I'm using a Java client library which provides an abstraction for interaction with the service. The client library works on normal machines. However, when I use the classes in my Android project, some calls don't return a result on Android, the background-service stops working at the first of those commands. Wireshark shows a tcp exchange, the server gets the requests. There is no exceptions or anything. Something in the serialization/deserialization semms not to work. I'm using the newest version of Jackson libraries (1.5.3) and the restlet jar in the android edition. Is there any known problems with Jackson and Android? Which code and libraries are compatible with Android? Thanks in advance.

• Where is the displaytag of scheduled reporting?

  So I have been making some reports and using displaytag to output these reports in html, csv, excel, pdf, etc. They are paginated, and take a simple object graph... and output excellent results everytime, with very little code. However, I need to use displaytag or its equivalent outside of a jsp. So that a user can schedule a report to run, and that report is stored in a db, or emailed for later viewing. I have looked at jasper-based reporting solutions, but making a jasper jrxml file is just a nightmare. I know there are gui tools to help, but I'm content with the simple output of displaytable, so I'm happy to give up that control for ease of implementation. Really, if I could take the display:table config out of the jsp I would, so please keep that in mind when proposing a solution. btw, java solutions would be my cup of tea.

• Throwing a new exception while throwing an old exception

  If a destructor throws in C++ during stack unwinding caused by an exception, the program terminates. (That's why destructors should never throw in C++.) If a finally block is entered in Java because of an exception in the corresponding try block and that finally block throws another exception, the first exception is silently swallowed. This question crossed my mind: Could a programming language handle multiple exceptions being thrown at the same time? Would that be useful? Have you ever missed that ability? Is there a language that already supports this? Is there any experience with such an approach? Any thoughts?

In short, the application needs to do the following: On click, fetch a RSS feed online Parse it for data Show the data I've been browsing for guides, tutorials and documentation but the parsers I've found so far only deal with local strings or files or are way too complicated for me to go through at this point. Can you provide me a link to a good XML parser class (that is included in the Android SDK) Provide me with an example of its use. • Why are listener lists Lists?

  Why are listener lists (e.g. in Java those that use addXxxListener() and removeXxxListener() to register and unregister listeners) called lists, and usually implemented as Lists? Wouldn't a Set be a better fit, since in the case of listeners there's No matter in which order they get called (although there may well be such needs, but they're special cases; ordinary listener mechanisms make no such guarantees), and No need to register the same listener more than once (whether doing that should result in calling the same listener 1 times or N times, or be an error, is another question) Is it just a matter of tradition? Sets are some kind of lists under the hood anyway. Are there performance differences? Is iterating through a List faster or slower than iterating through a Set? Does either take more or less memory? The differences are certainly almost negligible.

  Lets say we have a website that uses a web service for all of its functionality (i.e. retrieving and updating data from/to db), how does the web service authenticate requests? As I understand it, in a traditional java "website" a user provides a username & password, and upon validation a jsessionid is assigned to the user (client browser). Every time the client browser asks the website for something, the site checks for the jsessionid ensuring that the user is registered and authenticated. Is there a web services equivalent of this? If yes, what?

• Making the domain-model of tic tac toe

  I am trying to make the domain model of a Tic Tac Toe game. I'll try then to go on through the various steps of the Unified Process and later implement it in some language (C# or Java). I'd like to have some feedback if I'm going on the right path: I've defined the game with two actors, Player O and Player X. I'm not sure about defining both a Tile and a Tile State. Maybe I should only define a Tile and have the 3 possible states specialize from it? I'm not sure what is best: to have both Player O and Player X be associations with Tic Tac Toe or have them inherit from Player that is associated with Tic Tac Toe. Following the design shown on the pic, in theory we could have a Tic Tac Toe concept with 2 Player O's, which wouldn't be correct. What is your opinion on this? Also, am I missing something in the diagram? Although I can't see any other actors for Tic Tac Toe, should I have any other? Thanks

• How to render Asian characters in a PDF using xhtmlrenderer

  I was wondering what steps were needed to render Asian characters using the java based xhtmlrenderer (flying saucer) library? I am wanting to render the following: <html> <body>????????</body> </html> Without any font settings being added to the HTML this renders fine in normal browsers, but I can't find anyway to render this to PDF using the iTextRenderer portion of xhtmlrenderer. After following various threads on the mailing list, I see lots of posts talking about adding .TTF files from the c:\windows\fonts directory, and I have modified the examples to run on linux ( https://gist.github.com/643173745182c9becc57 ), which shows me various fonts being displayed, but I don't see any Asian glyffs. Does anyone have any decent pointers, or clean solutions to this problem? Or am I looking at the wrong problem with a really simple solution elsewhere?

• RequestDispatcher forward between Tomcat instances

  I have a scenario where I have single entry point Servlet and further Servlets that requests are forwarded to that undertake heavy processing. I am looking at options to distribute this load and I would like to know if it is possible using Tomcat or another platform to forward requests between Servlets sitting on different servers using a cluster type configuration or similar. • If I package a web application with the maven goal war:exploded, why won't pom.xml and pom.propertie

  Hi, I'm pretty new to Maven and I've noticed an interesting thing in the Maven WAR Plugin. When I package my Java web application with war:war, a zipped war is created. This war contains also the files pom.xml and pom.properties in the META-INF directory. But if I package my application with war:exploded and create an exploded war directory, those two files won't be included. Now I'm curious, why the pom.xml and the pom.properties aren't packaged into the exploded war. Besides those two files the contents of the exploded and the zipped war are equal. Is there a reason why the plugin omits pom.xml and pom.properties from the exploded war?

• Is there something like bsdiff/Courgette for jar files?

  Google uses bsdiff and Courgette for patching binary files like the Chrome distribution. Do any similar tools exist for patching jar files? I am updating jar files remotely over a bandwidth-limited connection and would like to minimize the amount of data sent. I do have some control over the client machine to some extent (i.e. I can run scripts locally) and I am guaranteed that the target application will not be running at the time. I know that I can patch java applications by putting updated class files in the classpath, but I would prefer a cleaner method for doing updates. It would be good if I could start with the target jar file, apply a binary patch, and then wind up with an updated jar file that is identical (bitwise) to the new jar (from which the patch was created).

  Hi! I'm implementing a new machine learning algorithm in Java that extracts a prototype datastructure from a set of structured datasets (tree-structure). As im developing a generic library for that purpose, i kept my design independent from concrete data-representations like XML. My problem now is that I need a way to define a data model, which is basically a ruleset describing valid trees, against which a set of trees is being matched. I thought of using BNF or a similar dialect. Basically I need a way to iterate through the space of all valid TreeNodes defined by the ModelTree (Like a search through the search space for algorithms like A*) so that i can compare my set of concrete trees with the model. I know that I'll have to deal with infinite spaces there but first things first. I know, it's rather tricky (and my sentences are pretty bumpy) but I would appreciate any clues. Here what i'd like to be able to do : Have an enum Species made of CAT and DOG wich would grant me access to sub enums of the available CAT and DOG breeds. • Are there any B-tree programs or sites that show visually how a B-tree works

  I found this website that lets you insert and delete items from a B-tree and shows you visually what the B-tree looks like: java b-tree I'm looking for another website or program similar to this. This site does not allow you to specify a B-tree of order 4 (4 pointers and 3 elements), it only lets you specify B-trees with an even number of elements. Also, if possible, I'd like to be able to insert letters instead of numbers. I think I actually found a different site but that was a while ago and can't find it anymore.

• javamail vs sendmail performance during bulk email

  Hi all, I'm writing a Java mass emailer application to send out emails to send between 50,000 to 100,000 a day to users. The current plan is to delegate the sending to delegate to sendmail (on the local unix server). From our testing sendmail is sending a maximum of 5 emails per second. Would JavaMail be a faster option? Does anyone know what a faster way to send emails. We want to get this process out as quick as possible. Edit: BTW, a pdf will be attached too

• Game/Application menu as a central part of the game/application

  I am developing a Java application, well, it's actually a small game. I want to build up the application as follows: when it starts, a window should appear which has a menu with four choices: 'Start game', 'Options', 'Highscores' and 'Quit'. If you then click game, the game starts, preferrably in the same window, if you click options, well you know the drill. How should I program this? At the moment, I'm considering using a CardLayout, but I'm not sure this is the right way to do this. Do you guys maybe have another proposition?
