• Automation of testing using JUnit

  Hi, i am trying to automate manual testing of modules in my project. We are dealing with IBM Websphere Message queue software. We have a trigger component written in core java which when executed polls for availability of message in the configured queue. Its an indefinite while loop that keeps the trigger component running. I have written test cases in JUnit to put message in the queue and now will i be able to start/stop the trigger component on demand? Invoking the trigger component keeps it running and i am not getting the control back to check the expected output. If i start it in thread then the log files to which the trigger component is supposed to update when processing the message is not getting updated. How can i resolve this situation. Your suggestion and directions is highly appreciated. Thanks, -Vijay

  Hi, I understand that this question could be answered with a simple sentence and that it may be viewed as subjective, however, I am a young student who is interested in pursuing a career in programming and wondered how long it took some of you to get to the level of experience you are now?. I ask this because I am currently working on building an application in Java on the Android platform and it bothers me that I am constantly having to look up how to write a certain section of code in my application such as writing to a database, or how the if loop should be structured. My question really is, how long did it take for you to become experienced enough to actually know exactly how your next line of code was going to look, before you even wrote it?

• Looking for an HQL builder (Hibernate Query Language)

  I'm looking for a builder for HQL in Java. I want to get rid of things like: StringBuilder builder = new StringBuilder() .append("select stock from ") .append( Stock.class.getName() ) .append( " as stock where stock.id = ") .append( id ); I'd rather have something like: HqlBuilder builder = new HqlBuilder() .select( "stock" ) .from( Stock.class.getName() ).as( "stock" ) .where( "stock.id" ).equals( id ); I googled a bit, and I couldn't find one. I wrote a quick & dumb HqlBuilder that suits my needs for now, but I'd love to find one that has more users and tests than me alone. Note: I'd like to be able to do things like this and more, which I failed to do with the Criteria API: select stock from com.something.Stock as stock, com.something.Bonus as bonus where stock.someValue = bonus.id ie. select all stocks whose property someValue points to any bonus from the Bonus table. • Building big, immutable objects without using constructors having long parameter lists

  Hi StackOverflow! I have some big (more than 3 fields) Objects which can and should be immutable. Every time I run into that case i tend to create constructor abominations with long parameter lists. It doesn't feel right, is hard to use and readability suffers. It is even worse if the fields are some sort of collection type like lists. A simple addSibling(S s) would ease the object creation so much but renders the object mutable. What do you guys use in such cases? I'm on Scala and Java, but i think the problem is language agnostic as long as the language is object oriented. Solutions I can think of: "Constructor abominations with long parameter lists" The Builder Pattern Thanks for your input!

• Can I pass data into a HashMap<String,Object> from JSP to a JavaBean?

  Hi Everyone, I am just starting out with JSP, Java, etc web development... I would love to use some sort of framework, but for this project I can't do that. In any case I want to potentially pass essentially limitless data (for flexibility) to my javabeans. My idea was if I can have key value pairs that would really easy. The values will always be strings or integers. HashMap seems ideal in this case. Is this possible? Any ideas? Can I do this with JSP Bean tags or should I write scriptlets? Thanks!!!

• Hibernate vs JPA vs JDO - pros and cons of each?

  I'm familiar with ORM as a concept, and I've even used nHibernate several years ago for a .NET project; however, I haven't kept up with the topic of ORM in Java and haven't had a chance to use any of these tools. But, now I may have the chance to begin to use some ORM tools for one of our applications, in an attempt to move away from a series of legacy web services. I'm having a hard time telling the difference betweeen the JPA spec, what you get with the Hibernate library itself, and what JDO has to offer. So, I understand that this question is a bit open-ended, but I was hoping to get some opinions on: What are the pros and cons of each? Which would you suggest for a new project? Are there certain conditions when it would make sense to use one framework vs the other?

  How can I get the current local wall clock time (in number of millis since 1 Jan 1970) in London? Since my application can run on a server in any location, I think I need to use a TimeZone of "Europe/London". I also need to take Daylight Savings into account i.e. the application should add an hour during the "summer". I would prefer to use the standard java.util libraries. Is this correct? • Strange HtmlUnit behavior (bug?)

Take a look at this: WebClient client = new WebClient(); WebRequestSettings wrs = new WebRequestSettings(new URL("http://stackoverflow.com/ping/?what-the-duck?"), HttpMethod.HEAD); client.getPage(wrs); Running this code results in throwing FileNotFoundException, because HTTP Status code on the page is 404 and getting the same page again with the GET method, with User-Agent set to Java-.... Why does it GET the page (it doesn't happen with "normal" status codes)? Is this a bug? • Should we seal Singletons? Should we try to inherit from Singletons in the first place?

  Should a Singleton class be allowed to have children? Should we seal it? What are the pro's and con's? For being able to inherit from a Singleton class, we would have to make the constructor protected instead of private. Now, that will be fine in c#, but the protected word in java gives both child-classes and package-classes access to the constructor. Which means not only classes that inherit from our Singleton can access the constructor but other classes in the same package can do it. I'm a bit confused about all this facts. Maybe I am making a big fuss about nothing to worry about too much? Until now, I never had any necessity of trying to inherit from a Singleton, so maybe this is just an academic question! Thanks

The pay is pretty good, and I would assume the position has good job security and stability.   I am facing problems in using xalan in eclipse plugin. When I try to create factory instance by: TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance("org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl", null); I get error: javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactoryConfigurationError: Provider org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl not found ... I have following lib jars in plugin classpath: xml-apis.jar, xercesImpl.jar, serializer.jar, xalan.jar I even can't create class instance by: c = Class.forName("org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl"); Object o = c.newInstance(); It returns error: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl But if I run same code outside eclipse plugin with same libs on classpath, it works fine. Could Somebody give an idea if I am doing some mistake or how to reolve this issue?

  Good evening, I'm trying to splitting the parts of a german address string into its parts via Java. Does anyone know a regex or a library to do this? To split it like the following: Name der Straße 25a 88489 Teststadt to Name der Straße|25a|88489|Teststadt or Teststr. 3 88489 Beispielort (Großer Kreis) to Teststr.|3|88489|Beispielort (Großer Kreis) It would be perfect if the system / regex would still work if parts like the zip code or the city are missing. Is there any regex or library out there with which I could archive this? EDIT: Rule for german addresses: Street: Characters, numbers and spaces House no: Number and any characters (or space) until a series of numbers (zip) (at least in these examples) Zip: 5 digits Place or City: The rest maybe also with spaces, commas or braces

• good documentation about "avoid catching throwable", in context of weblogic server

  hi all, i am currently refactoring an existing codebase (EJBs...) to rip out all blocks where a Throwable is catched inside of the EJB. try { ... do some business logic } catch(Throwable t){ ... log and swallow ... :-( } i want/need to convince the people around me with proper documentation that "catching throwable" is a no-go for an EJB (we have lots of discussions around this :-(( ). weblogic will handle all the "Error" conditions and maybe invalidate EJBs and put fresh(working) EJBs into the pool. catching Throwable would undermine all these security nets provided by weblogic. and catching throwable is bad practice anyway (but people here are reluctant and use the "throwable" hammer everywhere). is anyone able to point me to some online docs where this behaviour is explained (for weblogic or jboss or...). i searched via google and had a look at the weblogic docs but wasn't able to find anything, just generic java doc. any help highly appreciated cheers marcel

• Improve mysql JDBC insert call

  i have a legacy Java system that every time it gets an order it makes a JDBC call to a stored procedure for each field in the order. Generally the stored procedure will get called 20 to 30 times for each order. The store procedure is just doing an insert into a table for each field. i need to improve the performance of this operation. one thought i had was to create an insert query string that does multiple inserts in one JDBC call. MySql supports a multiple insert string. INSERT INTO PersonAge (name, age) VALUES ('Helen', 24), ('Katrina', 21), ('Samia', 22), ('Hui Ling', 25), ('Yumie', 29) This has the advantage of only requiring one JDBC call per order. Any other ideas on how to improve performance?

• How can I create a JTable where the first column is always in the JScrollPane viewport?

  What's the best way to set up a table in a JScrollPane such that the first column is always on the screen in the same position regardless of horizontal scrolling and overlaps columns that pass underneath? When the scrollbar is at the farthest left, the columns look normal, but as the user scrolls to the right, the secondary columns (2 and on) move underneath the first until the last column appears on the far right of the viewport? I found a sample taken from Eckstein's "Java Swing" book that sort of does this, but it doesn't allow resizing of the first column. I was thinking of some scheme where one JPanel held a horizontal struct and a table holding the secondary columns and another JPanel which floated over them (fixed regardless of scrolling). The struct would be to keep the viewport range constant as the first column floated around. Ideally I could do it with two tables using the same model, but I'm not sure if the whole idea is a naive solution.

  Hello; I am an Emacs lover probably because I love the key binding and I am able to do things very quickly. I also use Eclipse IDE for my Java/Android/Python/ development because it is free, most of my peers use it, and it works. I find myself switching between emacs and Eclipse and the workflow just isn't great. What I would like to do is setup the key bindings in Eclipse so that they are like Emacs. • What does the status code of the Perl interpreter mean?

  Hi, This might sound slightly confusing, but please bear with me. I'm trying to execute a copy of the Perl interpreter using Java's Runtime.exec(). However, it returned error code 9. After running the file a few times, the perl interpreter mysteriously started to return code 253 with no changes in my command at all. What does code 253 / code 9 mean? A google search for perl interpreter's exit codes turned up nothing. Where can I find a list of exit codes for the Perl interpreter? Thanks!

• How can I put my own text hover into default Eclipse editor?

  I need to put some extra information into to the standard "javadoc" hover, that shows up when you go with mouse over some token. Or I need to create a new hover showing that information while pressing some key (like alt) and then hovering (I can see that this is done e.g. with the shift key, which enables us to see the hover with sourcecode, instead of javadoc). So far I found documentation on how to create hover in your own editors, but I need to extend the default java editor. Basically I am interested in showing some e-mail information related to the classname (token) over which user is hovering. Is there any extension point that could be used for this? For running a JAR file I am using a command-line window and executing the following command: java -jar helloworld.jar By using this command I can execute the JAR file. But instead of doing it in a command-line window, I want to execute the JAR file if I double click on the JAR file. I did some Google search for this. But I cannot do this. • Is writing a reference atomic on 64bit VMs

  Hi The java memory model mandates that writing a int is atomic: That is, if you write a value to it (consisting of 4 bytes) in one thread and read it in another, you will get all bytes or none, but never 2 new bytes and 2 old bytes or such. This is not guaranteed for long. Here, writing 0x1122334455667788 to a variable holding 0 before could result in another thread reading 0x112233440000000 or 0x0000000055667788. Now the specification does not mandate object references to be either int or long-sized. For type safety reasons I suspect they are guaranteed to be written atomiacally, but on a 64bit VM these references could be very well 64bit values (merely memory addresses). No here are my question: Are there any memory model specs covering this (that I haven't found)? Are long-writes suspect to be atomic on 64bit VMs? Are VMs forced to map references to 32bit?   I'm drawing images to pdf using Java framework iText. I need to draw lines of specified width. There is a method setLineWidth(float width) in class PdfContentByte that should change it. However no matter what value I pass as its parameter the lines drawn are always extra thin. There is following line in javadoc of setLineWidth: The line width specifies the thickness of the line used to stroke a path and is measured in user space units. I don't know what is "space unit". Everything else in iText seems to be measured in point(around 1/72 inch). I cant find any reference to what are those "space units" and how to change them. code: to.setLineWidth(thickness); to.moveTo(x, y); to.lineTo(x + 100, y + 100); Variable to contains instance of PdfContentByte.

• Eclipse -vm option trouble

  I'm having trouble setting up a new eclipse installation with the -vm option. I'm using the eclipse.ini file below (which has worked in the past). I need this for the m2eclipse plugin. Currently, if I include the -vm option eclipse fails to start.
