• What's New & Cool in NetBeans IDE 7.x

  Loads of new features have been added to NetBeans IDE during the NetBeans IDE 7.x release cycle, i.e., 7.0 together with all the minor releases that have come after that, up to 7.4, which was released during the last few days. Hard to keep track of everything added over all those releases, so instead of making a "What's New in NetBeans IDE 7.4" slide deck (which would only cover the highlights of the NetBeans IDE 7.4 Release Notes), as we would normally do, we've instead produced "What's New in NetBeans IDE 7.x", which is around 50 slides presenting all the key features of the IDE, together with all the key newest features. • Folding at home refusing connection?

  I am having a slight problem. I love contributing to folding at home, if some of you dont know what it is, it's a program that downloads work from the stanford university servers, has your computer process it (takes about 12 hours for 1 assignment depending on the processor, and then uploads it back. The problem with mine is that when I run FAHControl in terminal, it says Error 111 connection refused. This doesnt happen when i run folding at home on windows. Can someone tell me how to fix this? Thanks.

  In several of my programming courses in the University, my teachers always told me the following: A function and a procedure are basically the same thing: the only difference is that a function returns a value, and the procedure doesn't. That means that this: function sum($a, $b) { return $a + $b; } ... is a function, and this: function sum($a, $b) { echo $a + $b; } ... is a procedure. In the same train of thought, I've seen that a method is the equivalent of a function in the OOP world. That means that this: class Example { function sum($a, $b) { return $a + $b; } } Is a method — but how do you call this? class Example { function sum($a, $b) { echo $a + $b; } } What's the equivalent name, or how do you call a method that doesn't returns anything?

• manage 2 wireless device

  I erased Windows 7 and installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell Latitude E4200. I an very happy with my choice but with little pity. I cannot use the wireless service in my university as the build-in device works unstable. I bought a USB wireless device, which solve the problem. However, the build-in device keep to sent me message about unable to connect, which waste laptop's cup & battery. The phsical bottom to turn off wireless affect both devices. So the question is: "How can I manually shut down wireless device?" There is another interest comes to my mind: "Does 2 wireless improve the overall internet usage if I run a high-internet-consuming program like BT ?" Thank for your time and energy.

  Considering the PCWorld review that came out in March: Free Android Apps Packed with Ads are Major Battery Drains ...Researchers from Purdue University in collaboration with Microsoft claim that third-party advertising in free smartphone apps can be responsible for as much as 65 percent to 75 percent of an app's energy consumption... Is there a best practice for integrating advert support into mobile applications, so as to not drain user battery too much? ...When you fire up Angry Birds on your Android phone, the researchers found that the core gaming component only consumes about 18 percent of total app energy. The biggest battery suck comes from the software powering third-party ads and analytics accounting for 45 percent of total app energy, according to the study... Has anyone invoked better ways of keeping away from the "3G Tail", as the report puts it? Is it better/possible to download a large set of adverts that are cached for a few hours, and using them to populate your ad space, to avoid constant use of the Wi-Fi/3G radios? Are there any best practices for the inclusion of adverts in mobile apps?

• advice for a new software engineer/developer right out of college

  I just graduated recently from a 4-year university with a degree in Computer Science and thankfully got a job in Software Engineering. I'm working with C++ with a .NET framework if that's correct to say because that also confuses me. What I'm asking for is what tutorials/books are out there to learn C++ for Windows Programming I guess? I know how to program somewhat and I understand the concepts but when I look at the code it doesn't make sense to me. I know I just started so it's kind of expected but it's certainly quite different from college. Thanks!

• How do I install xulrunner in 12.04?

  I am trying to migrate a virtual machine I use for my classes at the university from 10.04 to 12.04 and in that I am using xulrunner so that first, I can have SQLiteManager as a stand alone app next, KNIME can provide help for its nodes I tried adding the the mozilla ppa as described in some posts, e.g. here or here, but when I search for xulrunner in Synaptic I get no match. I read in this link, that xulrunner was left out intentionally, which, frankly, I think is a bad decision! Anyway, does anyone know a way out of this, i.e. how to get xulrunner for 12.04? Any help appreciated!

• How do I start working as a programmer - what do I need?

  i am currently learning Java and PHP as I have some projects from university, which require me to apply both languages. Specifically, a Java GUI application, connecting to a MySQL database and a web application that will be implemented in PHP/MySQL. I have started learning the MVC pattern, Struts, Spring and I am also learning PHP with zend. My first question is: How can I find employment as a programmer/software engineer? The reason I ask is because I have sent my CV into many companys, but all of them stated that I required work experience. I really need some guidance on how to improve my career opportunites. At present, I work on my own and haven't worked in collaboration with anyone on a particular project. I'm assuming most people create projects and submit them along with their CVs. My second question is: Everyone has to make a start from somewhere, but what if this somewhere doesn't come? What do I need to do to create the circumstances where I can easily progress forward? As teachers we are always looking to improve the knowledge transfer to our students – and the Program Director found an interesting study that I thought I might share here. • Roanoke Code Camp 2014

I attended sessions on Apache Cassandra by Dr. Dave King (@tildedave), Angular JS by Kevin Israel (@kevadev), and JavaScript for Object-Oriented Programmers by Joel Cochran (@joelcochran).  I regret I was unable to attend all the sessions.   I'm a java/android programmer, but I don't have any experience in game programming, I'm already reading proper books, like "Pro Android Games", but my concerns are more about the ideas behind game programming than the techniques themselves. I'm working on a 2D game, something like Cluedo to let you understand the genre. I would like to know how should I act with the "scenes", for example, a room with a desk, TV, windows and a lamp. I need to make some items tappable and others not. Is it common to use one image (invisible to the user) with every different item a different color, then call the getColor() method on the image? Or use one image as background, and separate images for all the items? If the latter, how can I set the positioning? and should I use imageView or imageButton? I'm sorry if those are really low quality questions, but as "outsider" ( I'm 23 and still finishing my university ) it's pretty hard learn alone.

• How do I set a system wide proxy?

  I'm trying to set a system wide proxy, and I'm specifically having difficulties with apt-get for installing applications on my Ubuntu. I'm in a university using a proxy server with username/password. I'm aware of setting a proxy with username and password in the following manner: http://username:[email protected]:8080/ But it fails, as a critical example with apt-get. Username contains backslash( \ ) in it and I'm wondering whether that could be a problem for failing. I'd be grateful with any input on this. P.S I'm on Ubuntu 11.04

• Is the increase in earning potential for a software developer enough to justify the cost of pursuing a masters degree? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is a Master's worth it? I am considering possibly enrolling in distance education at Kaplan University in order to pursue my masters. On one hand, I would prefer to have more free time so that I can continue to study for certifications and play with the technologies that interest me, work on my little side projects, etc. On the other hand, I am wondering how much difference it can make for my career if I go ahead and get a masters. I have been a .NET programmer since about 2004/2005. I'm currently working in a stable position but possibly considering a move to phoenix when my company's contract runs its course. There is not enough time between now and then for me to be complete with my masters, but I'm just trying to consider whether I should start. The main thing I am trying to determine is really whether or not the increase in earning potential is going to make the cost of pursuing my masters degree a good investment. Any thoughts?
