• How to connect to DSL modem using PPPoE?

  Hello, I am connecting to the internet through a pppoe connection, but for some reason I can not connect to my modem (it's address is 192.168.1.1). Before I set my pppoe connection, I could connect. So, is there a way? • network manager says "device not managed"

  I used to be able to share my network connection by editing the Auto Eth0 to share with other computers in the Ipv4 section and now I upgraded my laptop to 11.10 . Now are there no wired connections in the network manager. • Cannot establish Wired connection on Acer Aspire 5930G

  I use an Acer Aspire 5930G, dual booted with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10. My problem is that i cannot establish wired connection on my ubuntu. Wireless connection works in both of my OSs but the Wired connection does not, only on the Ubuntu. I have already tried the common fix: echo on | sudo tee /sys/class/net/eth0/device/power/control but without any results. • Fake links cause crawl error in Google Webmaster Tools

  Google reported Crawl Errors last week on my largest site though Webmaster Tools. Here is the message: Google detected a significant increase in the number of URLs that return a 404 (Page Not Found) error. Investigating these errors and fixing them where appropriate ensures that Google can successfully crawl your site's pages. The Crawl Errors list is now full of hundreds of fake links like these causing 16,519 errors so far: Note that my site does not even have a search.html and is not related to any of the terms shown in the above image. Inspecting sources for one of those links, I can see this is not simply an isolated source but a concerted effort: Each of the links has a few to a dozen sources all from different, seemingly unrelated sites. It is completely baffling as to why would someone to spending effort doing this. What are they hoping to achieve? Is this an attack? Most importantly: Does this have a negative effect on my side? Could it negatively impact my ranking? If so, what to do about it? The few linking pages I looked at are full of thousands of links to tons of sites and have no contact information and do not seem like the kind of people who would simply stop if asked nicely! According to Google Webmaster Tools, these errors have appeared in a span of 11 days. No crawl errors were being reported previously.

• How to test the tests?

  We test our code to make it more correct (actually, less likely to be incorrect). However, the tests are also code -- they can also contain errors. And if your tests are buggy, they hardly make your code better. I can think of three possible types of errors in tests: Logical errors, when the programmer misunderstood the task at hand, and the tests do what he thought they should do, which is wrong; Errors in the underlying testing framework (eg. a leaky mocking abstraction); Bugs in the tests: the test is doing slightly different than what the programmer thinks it is. Type (1) errors seem to be impossible to prevent (unless the programmer just... gets smarter). However, (2) and (3) may be tractable. How do you deal with these types of errors? Do you have any special strategies to avoid them? For example, do you write some special "empty" tests, that only check the test author's presuppositions? Also, how do you approach debugging a broken test case?

• Wireless will not connect on an Asus U56? [closed]

  I have an ASUS U56. I could connect to internet without delay or problems in Ubuntu 11.04. Now, running Ubuntu 11.10, I have not been able to connect. I can see the network and the computer tries to connect, but never makes the connection. I have been trying to fix this problem since the release date of 11.10. I had to install the older kernel 2.6 to get the wifi to work.   I am trying to install NIC r8168 and it shows everything installed ok. It is a brand new NIC and the lights wont come on when I plug in a ethernet. The NIC is that is not working is eth0. • HP DV6 connects but no internet

  I have a Hewlett Packard DV6. I connected to the access point. I receive an IP address/default gateway/DNS,etc(DHCP). I cannot ping my gateway. DNS lookups fails. There is just no connectivity. My driver is listed as being IWLWIFI. An lspci shows my card to be a Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E. • Wired card not connecting after trying to connect

  I have an Ubuntu 12.10 PC. When I plug in my internet cable it starts connecting and after a minute it says it can't connect. I tried different cables but nothing works. Wlan works. I think it's the network driver but I don't know how to install/update it. • Why do I get "Invalid Column Name" errors in EF4?

  I am trying to learn Entity Framework 4.0. Disclaimer 1: I am brand new to Entity Framework. I have successfully used LinqToSQL. Disclaimer 2: I am really a VB.Net programmer, so the problem could be in the C# code. Given this code snippet: public int Login(string UserName, string Password) { return _dbContext.Memberships .Where(membership => membership.UserName.ToLower() == UserName.ToLower() && membership.Password == Password) .SingleOrDefault().PrimaryKey; } Why do you suppose I get "Invalid column name" errors? {"Invalid column name 'UserName'.\r\nInvalid column name 'Password'.\r\nInvalid column name 'UserName'.\r\nInvalid column name 'Password'."} Those column names are spelled and cased correctly. I also checked the generated code for the entity in question, and those columns are properties in the entity. The intellisense and code completion also puts the column names into the expression just as they are here. I am stumped by this. • How do I properly host a WCF Data Service in IIS? Why am I getting errors?

  I'm playing around with WCF Data Services (ADO.NET Data Services). I have an entity framework model pointed at the AdventureWorks database. When I debug my svc file from within Visual Studio, it works great. I can say /awservice.svc/Customers and get back the ATOM feed I expect. If I publish the service (hosted in an ASP.NET web application) to IIS7, the same query string returns a 500 fault. The root svc page itself works as expected and successfully returns ATOM. The /Customers path fails. • What is best strategy to handle exceptions & errors in Rails?

  Hello. I was wondering if people would share their best practices / strategies on handling exceptions & errors. Now I'm not asking when to throw an exception ( it has been throroughly answered here: SO: When to throw and Exception) . And I'm not using this for my application flow - but there are legitimate exceptions that happen all the time. For example the most popular one would be ActiveRecordNotFound. What would be the best way to handle it? The DRY way? Right now I'm doing a lot of checking within my controller so if Post.find(5) returns Nil - I check for that and throw a flash message. However while this is very granular - it's a bit cumbersome in a sense that I need to check for exceptions like that in every controller, while most of them are essentially the same and have to do with record not found or related records not found - such as either Post.find(5) not found or if you are trying to display comments related to post that doesn't exist, that would throw an exception (something like Post.find(5).comments[0].created_at) I know you can do something like this in ApplicationController and overwrite it later in a particular controller/method to get more granular support, however would that be a proper way to do it? class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base rescue_from ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid do |exception| render :action => (exception.record.new_record? ? :new : :edit) end end

• PHP site keeps opening to blank page, no errors.

  First, the premises: PHP loaded on IIS6 on Win2003 STD R2 SP2, PHP_5213 using FastCGI, MySQL_5145. Customer sent me the site files, which I unzipped to C:\InetPub\wwwroot\<site root>, then I created a new site in IIS, pointed to <site root>, added test.php to the site files for testing and it works, but visiting index.php produces a blank page with no errors. The readme.txt file present makes reference to application.php and explains root folder var and sets it to a non-existent file. I don't know PHP syntax, but I tried several logical changes with zero results. At this point I'm not even sure if that is the problem anymore. With PHP, MySQL & site debugging have put in over 20 hours. Still confused, I have resorted to heavy drug use and purchased a small firearm, loaded with a single round (even this seemed to take an inordinate amount of time). I've given up all hope. Someone please help save a new server and/or old administrator.

• How do I recover from pushing a gitosis.conf file with parsing errors due to line breaks?

While adding a new .git path following writable= in gitosis.conf I managed to insert a few line breaks. • Android Hero denies XMLSocket or Socket connection? ....errors #2031, #2048

  Hi, I am trying to adapt an existing flash web chat application for the Android mobile phone and I am having this really annoying issue. The server is a custom based solution and can send back both binary messages or XML. So I can use either XMLSocket class or the Socket class to get data from the server. Everything works fine when deployed and I connect from the desktop but when I try it from the android mobile I get the infamous errors #2031, followed by #2048. Now the crossdomain.xml file is rock solid and works well for desktop. When the connect socket method runs I see that the server replies with the crossdomain file but I get the error when running on the mobile. Has anyone bumped into this? Is there some limitation from the mobile phone part. I wasn't able to find anything relevant for this issue, in terms of the phone not allowing Socket or XMLSocket connections. The phone(s) Motorola and HTC run Android 2.1 and indicates the flash FL10,1,123,358 version of flash lite. The issue can be reproduced also on the HTC Desire.
