• How can I move a load of zone records from a web based system to text based one?

  Hi there, I have a few domains with Dreamhost where I have set a load of records using their web based domain name system, and I've like to move them to another provider that lets me enter info directly as a text file for their name server, bind 9 to use. (If you're interested, I'm moving them to Gandi.net). Previously when I used a cpanel based system to do something similar, there was a tool that let me simply enter a domain name, and any available domains were automagically entered into a system, saving me typing it myself (and bringing down sites with silly typos in the process). What open source tool can I use to query a domain for all the relevant subdomains and records and list them in a format like a zone file, that I can use with other name servers?

• cloning a kvm guest os to a vmdk file

  I have a production environment where I am having 4 Guest OS running on a Ubuntu server which uses kvm. These OS are in an LVM based setup.I want these Virtual Machines to be in a vmdk format also.Where people would do experiments with these Virtual Machines so this in a vmware environment (or it can be Xen too) would be different from the kvm server.I would not have any control on that other environment so I want to give people vmdk images of these virtual machines. The production Virtual Machines will still keep running on kvm server but the VMs on which experiments would be done would be of type vmdk.(vmdk is a constraint) Here is output of lvscan ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm1' [100.00 GiB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm2' [150.00 GiB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm3' [50.00 GiB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm4' [100.00 GiB] inherit I was reading man page of qemu-img and what I understand is I need to first create a qcow image file which I need to populate and then convert that to a vmdk file. Is that understanding correct? Now suppose /dev/abcd/lvm4 is the virtual machine with which I am going to start this experiment.I can shutdown the production VMs for some time to do this. So is the following way correct to go on server 1 (where kvm is running) qemu-img convert -c -f raw -O vmdk /dev/abcd/lvm4 /backup/lvm4.img or it will affect the lvm4 on kvm server 1. I do not want the VM running on original server to at all loose its any of the content but also have a vmdk file for each of the Guest OS on kvm. Before I proceed with any of the above things on the production machine I just want to make sure that I am doing the correct thing so I asking here.

• USB drive dead after stopping copying process on Snow Leopard Server

  Hi there I was copying to a flash drive from our Snow Leopard server when I stopped the copying process half way through. The device then disappeared from the Desktop. So I unplugged it and plugged it right back in. The device just didn't show up. I unplugged it and plugged it into a Windows XP machine as well as a Windows 7 machine. On both machines, I right clicked "My Computer" and selected "Manage…". On both PC's, the device was located under Removable Storage, but had no size and no drive letter. It shows up in "My Computer", but when I choose "Format…" from the right-click menu (context menu), it says the drive could not be formatted. Can someone please advise me? The flash drives is about 5 mins old and should have no reason to be dead. I really can't loose this drive (I don't need the data on it, I just need it to work again), any help would be appreciated. • Virtual PC - Display Issue with Ubuntu Server

  Hi Everyone, I just did a clean install of Ubuntu Server 9.04 in Virtual PC on the Windows 7 RC, and it seems to be having a bit of an issue with the virtual machine's display adapter. I've tried setting a VGA flag in the GRUB configuration to no avail. This is a guess, but I think it has something to do with the color console mode that gets enabled by default at boot time. The system starts booting just fine (i.e. the console looks "normal" when I'm asked to enter an LVM passphrase, etc.), but then the display goes wonky after a few seconds and I end up with this. Typing commands in bash works just fine: it's not like the system is frozen or anything, I just can't see anything that I type. The console looks exactly the way it does in the image below.

• Excel 2007: Using a time to set XY chart axis scaling like in 2003

  In Excel 2003, when you created a XY chart using time as an axis, you could set the scaling of these axes by typing in the date. In Excel 2007, you have to use the decimal version of the time (eg. How many days since some arbitrary earlier date). I was wondering if there was a way to avoid having to make such a calculation? A developer posted on a blog that this issue would be fixed in a future release, but all versions of Excel 2007 I have tried have not resolved this issue. The relevant quote: Those of you familiar with this technique of converting time to a decimal may recall that Excel 2003 allowed you to enter a date and time like “1/1/07 11:00 AM” directly in the axis option min/max fields and Excel would calculate the appropriate decimal representation. This currently does not work in Excel 2007 but will be fixed in a subsequent release.

• Mouse settings/properties dialog box won't open in Windows 7

  Hi, I have a problem trying to open my computer's mouse settings by either going to the command prompt and typing, 'control mouse', 'main.cpl' (as researched online) or simply by trying to go to the Control Panel and clicking on 'Mouse' under Hardware and Sound section. I have also tried running cmd as Administrator and trying the above commands but that is of no help. Lastly, if I search for 'mouse' and click 'Mouse' from the Windows search bar, that doesn't work either. In the past I had bought and installed Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000 software and have just now bought and installed HP's Wireless Comfort Mobile mouse. Any help in this regard is highly recommended. I won't be able to restore or reinstall my laptop since it's a heavy use machine. Thanks! Yasser

• Mac Backup Plan

  I'm reviewing my backup plan and would appreciate any thoughts about what more I should do (if anything) to make sure I'm properly covered in case of all hell breaking loose. :-) I have one machine. 1) I run a nightly clone with SuperDuper. I alternate the clone drive weekly so I have two clones, one never more than a week old. 2) I use BackBlaze as a sort of Time Machine in the cloud. It runs all the time and keeps everything on my machine backed up online. 3) I sync all my 1Password logins, etc. to my iPhone once a week. ...And that's it. I feel pretty covered. But I'm always reading stuff like this: http://www.43folders.com/2010/03/15/yes-another-backup-lecture And that doesn't even mention online backup, and seems like a huge pain in the behind. But maybe I'm being naive? Should I have more backups? Thanks for any feedback. I really appreciate it.

  How do you manage the giant jungle of cables behind your PC? When you have 2 or more PCs next to each other, you wind up with this giant mess cables that's a pain in the neck to clean especially when both computers are running 24/7 and any fidgeting with the cables is likely to cause data loss and/or angry users. So far I've tried masking tape, cable ties and plain old string but none have been very effective. The masking tape kept the cables in place, but over time they ended up leaving this awful sticky residue on the sides of the cables that just won't come off gets all over your fingers and is horrible horrible horrible. I have nightmares about that stuff. We used cable ties and 'folded' up some of the longer cables so that they weren't any longer than they needed to be, but this meant that the position of some of our devices like the keyboard and the mouse were essentially 'fixed' until we removed the ties. The string didn't work much differently and required that we tie them properly or risk it coming loose. I would switch to a wireless keyboard and mouse, but I don't want to have to deal with the added expense of batteries, even the rechargable ones. Plus I don't want them to die on me at a crucial moment (happened to me once while playing Firearms _<). • Autocorrect for "fat fingers" - MS Word

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a plug-in for MS Word which can handle key-presses of surrounding keys when typing at speed (rather like iPhone or Android autocorrect)? My use case is in transcribing interviews where I need to type quickly (even with the playback at half speed) - but I don't do this often enough to become a proficient touch typist. I will also be paying close attention to the text produced in subsequent analysis so I have a reasonable expectation that I'll catch any "hilarious" autocorrect errors. Any pointers to plug-ins which work at either a system level or within MS Word would be great. Even in an open source word processor at a pinch, though I'd miss the MS Word environment and my macros. • Melting plastic around DC-in jack in laptop

  I recently noticed that the plastic around the DC-in jack of my laptop was warped (melted) a little bit. Since I noticed, I have done some experiments, and saw that the metal tip of the charger heats up very much when I am gaming, or performing CPU-intensive work (it's so hot that i can't hold it between my fingers). When I am using Windows normally (web browsing, music, video), the tip is not hot. I tried using another charger from a compatible laptop, but its metal tip overheated as well, so the problem is not caused by the charger. I have been using this laptop for gaming for 1.5 years and I never had this problem. When gaming I always use a laptop cooler. Dust is not the problem (i cleaned out the dust), and the CPU and GPU temperatures are not higher than when I got the laptop. The only thing that is excessively hot is the charger tip. Because I bought my laptop from the USA, sending it to warranty and back would cost more than the laptop's value, so I need to fix it myself. I have googled around, and I saw that the problem might be the DC-in jack that is located on the motherboard of the laptop. I plan to take the laptop apart and see if it has become loose, and soldering it in place if it has. My questions for you are: Did anyone deal with this problem in the past? Did anyone manage to fix it? Is the DC-in jack the culprit in this case? Or is it possible for the problem to be caused by another part on the motherboard? Is there any way I can check the DC-in jack with a multimeter? What should I measure (resistance, etc)? EDIT: My laptop is a Sager NP5135 (aka Clevo B5130M). • Permission problem - users can't access main index.php anymore

  From /var/www, I executed "chmod -R 774 ." and now none of my .php scripts are accessible. From my browser, when I type in mydomain.com or mydomain.com/test2.php or mydomain.com/test.php, I get the 403 Forbidden error msg. So, I changed the permissions of 3 of the .php scripts to 775, but this didn't help either.   On one of my servers (2008 R2) powershell refuses to run executables without extension, so typing cmd (or &cmd) in command prompt results in folowing error message: The term 'cmd' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet Invoking executable one of the following ways pops out separate window (which executes asynchronously in respect to parent). I've tried that in x86 version of powershell and in x64 one. I've tried -Noprofile argument. PATH seems to be OK. It includes System32 and all. The only way I've managed to execute cmd inline form powershell is opening standard cmd.exe shell, executing powershell.exe from it and executing cmd /c echo test from it. Inception, huh? What should I try next?

• Can't install Parallels Tools on Debian 7.2.0

People online are saying that you need to drag the install script to the terminal after typing sudo. So I do that, and this command is what's formed: $ sudo '/media/cdrom0/install' sudo: unable to execute /media/cdrom0/install: Permission denied What's the solution here?

• Internet Explorer 8 Loses Cookies

  I'm running Windows 7 for some time now and use Internet Explorer 8 as my main browser. What I've noticed is that it "loses" cookies A LOT! I mean it! Typical situation: I log in into a side checking the remember me checkbox. I reboot the computer/restart the browser, go to the site, get logged in automatically - I'm happy. From time to time however, I'm asked for the credentials. Normal situation you would say. So would I if it didn't happen few times a week. Come on! On Internet Explorer 7 I didn't notice this as much. Cookies were lost once a quarter or so. Note that i was using IE7Pro with my IE - dunno however if it has anything to do with my current problem. Anyway I wonder if this behavior is "normal" or is it only me? more info for people that suggest it may be normal - cookie expiring and stuff. When it happens I loose all auth cookies - gmail, bloglines and whatnot!

• Perl program not getting executed in xampp

  I am very new to CGI programming in Perl. In order to learn it i installed xampp 2 days back. But I am unable to execute my perl code . The code goes as folows: #!/usr/bin/perl use CGI; $co = new CGI; print $co->header, $co->start_html(title=>'CGI Example'), $co->center($co->hi('Subhayan welcome to CGI')), $co->end_html; Have saved the code in a text file named : Subhayan1.cgi and kept it in the folder cgi-bin under xampp folder in C drive. When i try to execute this through my web browser typing : "http://localhost/cgi-bin/Subhayan1.cgi" it comes up with a "Object not found page". I checked the apache configuration file under : xampp/apache/conf/httpd.conf. I checked the entry : ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "C:/xampp/cgi-bin/" It looks like pointing to the correct directory. What is the issue here can anyone help please???

• Couldn't dual boot Vista and Centos 5.4

  Hi all, Today I have installed Centos 5.4 with dual boot with Vista. Everything was fine, but after testing Centos 5.4, when I tried to load Vista, it did not load. After selecting vista from grub menu, it shows the following message: rootnoverify (hd0, 1) chainloader +1 No bootmgr found I googled and try to fix the boot but failed, Then I restart my machine, boot with vista cd and in rescue option, restore my bootmgr by typing bootrec /fixmbr What happened after that, I can load at vista now, but no grub menu shows :P It seems the Centos went totally invisible. I am using dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 and vista in my laptop and its working fine and with no error from the beginning. But installed Centos for one of my project needs and I need it running asap. So I am feeling very helpless. Please help me anyone out there. I know there are many people knows how to fix it. Please help me.. Thanks in advance.

• Routing to various node.js servers on same machine

  I'd like to set up multiple node.js servers on the same machine (but listening on different ports) for different projects (so I can pull any down to edit code without affecting the others). However I want to be able to access these web apps from a browser without typing in the port number, and instead map different urls to different ports: e.g. 45.23.12.01/app - 45.23.12.01:8001. I've considered using node-http-proxy for this, but it doesn't yet support SSL. My hunch is that nginx might be the most suitable. I've never set up nginx before - what configuration do I need to do? The examples of config files I've seen only deal with subdomains, which I don't have. Alternatively, is there a better (stable, hassle-free) way of hosting multiple apps under the same IP address?
