• Need a non-X terminal for the nvidia driver installation

  When I try to install the nvidia driver for my video card, I receive an error message. ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com. I wasn't able to find the README on the website but how do I create a terminal that is non-X? I am on 12.04.

• Using .add() on the same widget more than once

  I asked this question on Reddit and was directed here. http://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/vhadl/quickly_dynamic_ui/ Unfortunately I am having the same issue and the problems seems that you can only use .add() on a widget once. So here is my code, self.ui.labels = [] for titles in entries: label = Gtk.Label() self.ui.labels.append(label) self.ui.viewport1.add(self.ui.labels[-1]) self.ui.paned1.show_all() Now, for fun I decided "What would happen if I just manually did..." self.ui.viewport1.add(Gtk.Label()) self.ui.viewport1.add(Gtk.Button()) self.ui.viewport1.add(Gtk.Entry()) For my first code snippet I get this error, Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_viewport_add: assertion gtk_bin_get_child (bin) == NULL' failed The error happens an unknown amount of times because the list entries can vary in length, but for my second code snippet it happens exactly twice. This means that when I viewport1.add() it works the first time, but all adds after that receive the error above. So my question, is there a way in python to use .add() on the same widget more than once?

  We are running more than 600 Ubuntu systems in our company. It is a data centre so we have certain policies. We have disabled the usage of storage devices in all the Ubuntu systems. However we would like to configure email alerts. If someone inserts storage devices, we should get an email Alert with subject as below, Email Alert: STORAGE DEVICE FOUND on IP: 172.29.35.18 Note: Where as for Windows system, we have certain policies applied in our DC. So there is no problem with Windows system. We need to receive alerts for Ubuntu system also. Any way to accomplish the above task would be great.

• How can I generate signed distance fields in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-).   I'm trying to write a Home Proxy Server in C# and I almost succeeded but I have problem to handle HTTPS requests (CONNECT). I don't know really how to handle this type of requests. In my studies I realized that for this requests we must to connect client to target host directly. Steps for these requests (that I realized): Receive first request from client (CONNECT https://www.example.ltd:443 HTTP/1.1) and send that to target host Send HTTP/1.1 200 Connection Established\r\n\r\n to client Listen to both sockets (client and target host) and send receives from each other to each other Listen until one of sockets disconnected Is this correct? If it is, how?

• DDD / Layers and legacy systems

  I have to refactor a complex C# app (many dialogs, mixed logic and so on). There is a part managing the communication with special hardware equipments (sending commands and receive data via asynchronous c# callbacks). The code is "spaghetti" with mixed UI/Logic/Communication/etc and my task is to split the layers in a DDD sense. So, to which layer belongs a callback driver routine? The callbacks are creating "bubbles" in the system, up to the UI layer and because of this I cannot enforce the essential principle that any element of a layer depends only on other elements in the same layer or on elements of the layers "beneath" it. • DesktopCouch does not sync

  I have here two computers, both installed with Ubuntu 10.10. The Laptop uses the Netbook Edition. Both are connected, file sync and Tomboy Notes are working. My Desktop syncs databases with Ubuntu One, my Laptop does not. If I delete for example the contacts Database on my Desktop, the database is back a view seconds later. If I delete the same database on my laptop, nothing happens. (I'm using Futon) If I kill beam, delete the config and try to restart with the dbus-send I got an error Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. • Is porting a Windows application to Mac worth it? [closed]

  I have a C# Windows application that sells for $35, and fairly regularly receive requests for a version for OS X too. I don't have any experience with Mac so far though, and so am not sure exactly how much work that would involve and if it would be worth it. If anyone's been in a similar position, it'd be very helpful to know: Roughly how many more (%) sales can you expect by porting to Mac ? Would you say it's worth the investment of a new Macbook Pro and the time of learning and porting to Objective-C ? Thanks in advance.

  I am trying to install PrestaShop 1.4.0.17, and reach Step 3. I enter database information, which tests okay, and I choose the second option: Full mode: includes 100+ additional modules and demo products (FREE too!). Why is this happening? This also happens if I drop all database tables, and try again in simple mode. Is there a manual installation method?

• Redisigning an old site, structure change etc

  I have an old site built in 2006, it has around 200 pages and 500 pictures. Every single page is of course indexed as well as images. It is very well ranked for targeted keywords and I receive good amount of SEO traffic (I guess that's due the various campaigns, branding, ppc, etc..) Problem: Site has outdated design, pages and images have not so proper names, there are no heading and alt tags, it was built in tables, inline CSS etc.. Goal: Complete redisign site, use divs, change file names, add proper meta data, alt tags etc.. Question: How this can affect current SEO positions? I will redirect (301) every single page to the new one, build site map, but what to do with images? Do I need to redirect them also? Any other suggestion?

• How can I neatly embed Flash in a page in a way that is cross-browser compatible?

  When I receive Flash objects from my designer, it comes with an example HTML page which includes both <object> tags and <embed> tags as well as a whole heap of JavaScript. If I copy and paste this code in to my webpage, it works, but the code looks a mess (and there is so much of it!). If I remove the extra code and try either just <embed> or <object> on their own, it works in some browsers, but not others. Is there a neat, minimal method that works in all the major browsers?

H - Host, my Windows Vista The dots were just added since after saving the spaces disappear. So if I ping H from VM2, H would receive a different IP address from VM2. Could you give me a step by step on this? All machines are of course 32 bit. Thanks. Would appreciate the help so much.

• Does Hauppauge WinTVR 900H work with Digital TV in the UK

  I have been trying to sort out my Hauppauge WinTV 900H USB Tuner. Here in the UK, we do not have Analogue TV any more as we are fully converted to digital. I have had this working in Windows a while ago, but am having no joy in Ubuntu 13.04 all I get is a blue screen and no settings for the UK. Can anyone advise me how to set this up on my laptop. I have tried: Does Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 (r2) [USB ID 2040:6502] work with ubuntu 12.04 LTS? I am using TVTime I have also read this page, which makes me think that this unit can only receive Analogue signals, which are no longer transmitted in the UK (which could be my problem!) Laptop Specifications: Intel® Core™ i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz × 4 Intel® Sandybridge Mobile 6MB RAM Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Search engine bots accessing strange URLs

  We have ELMAH enabled on our site and get errors whenever a Page Not Found error is triggered on the website. We have recently redesigned a new website and so we understand that search engine robots might have previously indexed pages which they try to access and result in a Page Not Found errors. For this reason, we have set up permanent redirects for such previously indexed pages to the respective new pages. The website in mention is www.chambercollege.com and for example, a previously indexed URL was www.chambercollege.com/special-offers.aspx. This page is no longer accessible so we have created the necessary permanent redirect to redirect to the respective page on www.chambercollege.com/en/content/special-offers-161/. Now we are starting to receive Page Not Found errors of search engine bots (e.g. MSN bot) trying to access the URL www.chambercollege.com/special-offers.aspx/images/shadow_right.jpg/. Any idea how could a search engine make up that strange URL and whether you have any suggestions of what to do best?

• SmS Gateways - How do other sites do it? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Send and Receive SMS from my Website I would love to have a feature on my site that sends Email reminders and SmS(text messages) to people mobile phones. I been searching around and all I am finding is api's that charge money per SmS message(as low as 1cent per message). However even at 1cent per message that is still too much. The amount of money I am charging per year could be servilely eroded by just the Sms messages along. I could of course charge more money for my service or have an add on for SmS messages but I don't think either would work as most people expect it to be free feature and if they have to pay anything that is because of their carrier charging them not the website. How do other sites do it? I guessing companies like google have their own gateway providers or something like that. But how about smaller sites what do they do? I can't see them paying per sms text message.
